Fulham stepped up when Gervinho left the pitch, true we were wasting chances before then but the game really became one sided when we went down to 10 men. Fulham knew Rosicky and Benayoun would never get beyond their full backs.
. . . In other words, Fulham were better on the day.

I totally disagree Monsignor, for once I'm laying this at Arsene's feet. If we were squarely beaten I wld say so. If a team loses a game in which it should have been at least 3 nil up in the dying minute then the manager needs to reexamine himself on the day.
Arsene can now be accused of rewarding mediocrity. When he didn't have the players, I could understand but not now. The likes of Rosicky should no longer be playing for Arsenal and guys like Ramsey and Theo should be seeing more bench time while players like Benayoun And OX should play more? Just check out the stats. We basically repeated the Wolves game all over again only this time, we saw it to a final conclusion and lost. Wrong subs and lack of efficiency when on top pure and simple. Fulham were NOT better than us on the day.
Did you watch the 2nd half? undecided undecided Fulham dominated from start to finish with your goalie making some nice saves
Arsenal barely created anything after 45 minutes.

I can't see him playing that many games . . . QPR play with one striker and they already have Helguson, DJ Campbell and Bothroyd.
So unless he plays out wide on the wings, I cant see him playing regularly and that's what he needs.

@chamotex,
Points noted, but playing people out of position (no matter how dire the injury crisis is) is not a better solution. It doesn't make it panicking.Like I said before, the length of our casualty list should make us buy, because the alternative (park and Rafael in the middle e.g.) isn't viable at all.
Of course playing people out of position is not the solution but we shouldn't be surprised, this is not the first time Fergie has done it and I'm pretty sure it wont be the last. To be honest, Fergie under-estimated Blackburn and thought he could beat them with any team. Would he play that same team against Newcastle, Everton or any of the big teams? Hell no! He did it cos it was Blackburn at OT and he got bit in the butt.

StarBoard:
Also, I think Fergie and his scouts aren't  doing their homework.Go to Spain and see midfield talents.Defenders abound in Serbia,Italy and even in Switzerland.Do we need a marquee signing(a la Sneijder) with the attendant wages and expectations that follow?Probably not.I feel we can get decent buys in January.
Louis Saha was an excellent mid-season signing till injuries limited his production.

As for Rooney it turns out he was fined. So I guess I was wrong.
I think we are saying the same thing . . . just from different angles.
We don't need a 'marquee' signing and we don't even have to go outside the premiership to get players.
Getting the 'right' players that would make an instant impact in the January window is another issue and carries a lot of risks.
If we have to get a 'decent' CM in this window . . . I suggest we buy from the premiership - someone who already knows the premiership in and out and wont need settling in.

Clint Dempsey is in a 'decent' category if not better . . . but in the long-term?

Coupla comments on DailyMail website which make me laugh:

AVB is not of managerial class, at least at this level, Seems incapable of working with the squad. It has alienated the players. Please go back and look at Anelka preseason and first 5 matches. Look at Malouda's body of work when utilized appropriately. Also let us sit out a twenty goal scorer, Lampard, who playing parttime has managed to find the back of the net SEVEN times. On your bike you piker.

- Don Davis, High River Canada, 02/1/2012 00:19

The 16 goals they have shipped at home is already more than they conceded during an entire season for 10 years. They have managed only one clean clean sheet at Stamford Bridge in the league.

More importantly, they have lost three times in front of their own fans already, having been beaten on only five occasions at home during the previous seven seasons.

The defense is absolutely a joke ,i seen David Luiz in the 70 min very very tired his no way fit to be on the first 11. ROMAN dont waste your money on buying more players for this manager ,because his not a premier league manager and is not the players fault for this situation is the manager hi has no plan B another Phil Scolari every one going forward and nobody defending ,the way he treated Alex and Anelka is disgrace an insult to our club and i hope that he gets the boot before the end of the transfer window and bring Guus Hiddink please.SAVE OUR YEAR .WE ARE CHELSEA NOT PORTO. Until his gone i will support the reserves, academy and the girls ,

When you sell or loan Lampard that will be what breaks Chelsea your perfomance this season is almost as bearable as Calos ! To young to inexperinced, to gready and a club with all the money in the world and dosent look after its players !

More like cutting off one's nose to spite one's face.
He coulda been fined instead of dropped totally. Now instead of being clear,we're rejoicing that Sunderland threw us a lifeline.
Is your statement insinuating that because its Wayne Rooney, prolly our best player, he should only be fined and not dropped?

Fine? How much exactly can they fine someone that earns that ridiculous amount of money that will hurt him.
With PFA rules, the most you can fine a player is 2 weeks wages unless in exceptional circumstances.
Are you condoning him breaking a curfew?
There are set rules. If you break it . . . you should get punished. It's as simple as that. What kinda example is he showing the younger ones?
Wayne Rooney is not bigger than any other player.
If it was Diouf or Gibson that was punished the same way you guys wont be backing them. grin
It should serve as a warning to the other lads too esp the younger ones.
I back Fergie on that 100% if its true.

StarBoard:
Back to your position on players:
coogar raises points on how important using the right players is.If you're going to keep on playing people out of position (a la Park/Rafael),it means you've run out of players. If that is the case,I do not see it as panic-buying.
Moreover any purchase made should be made with long-term views.I'm pretty sure a club as big as ours knows this.
Right now we need at least one central midfielder and a central defender since Vidic will be out for the season.Playing people out of position all the time is not going to get us anywhere.Carrick is not a central defender. If you're not going to play the Pogbas and Morrisons and Fryers who are readily available,it shows you don't trust them.Swapping players in positions they are largely uncomfortable in is suicidal.A team as physical as Blackburn was never going to let lightweights like park and Rafael off easily.
It is panic buying if you are buying just to make up the numbers and not necessarily on quality to improve the team.
Blame Fergie - Giggs and Gibson could have played but Fergie rested them ( those 2 can and have played in CM for us)
Carrick is another option but he had to drop back into defence cos we didn't have any other CB.
He was looking to the Newcastle game cos he thought we could beat Blackburn with any team.

Everyone knows we need at least a CM or two but getting the right player at this time of the year is the dilemma.
I'm a big fan of Freddy Guarin . . . but will Porto sell in January? and for how much?
Tiote . . . he just signed a new 5 year contract . . . Im sure Newcastle will demand nothing less than 25m.

why would fergie place that above the interest of the team and the title race?
at least, keep him on the bench. . . .when things go awry, unleash rooney in the last 20 mins.
Fergie is strict . . . If he did break the curfew then he should take the punishment.

3 players for me. I will not think twice. It will be 2 wingers and once creative CM.
I will make sure one of the wingers is able to play in the middle when needed.

Wingers for me right now will be Eden Hazard and one of David Hoillet, Lucas Ocampos or Lucas Moura.
CM for me will be Mario Goetze.
Hoilett could be cheaper and more reasonable.

I am sorry but United don't leave transition until too late.
Like you said, "They are always in transition" . .

So if United are always in transition and you have not been in transitioned for 8 years, why in this world do you then expect United-like performances? Why would you expect United-like performances when you hire the 7th manager in 8 years? You think transition in itself exisit in isolation? It's a fusion of all things good.

You have to lay a foundation to expect United-like performances. You cannot buy it off a store-shelf, you've got to earn.

@chamotex,
Happy 2012to you sir.
I don't believe there aren't Players good enough to buy in January.
We've done it before,so I'm not so sure it's that impossible.
If we have a great scouting network led by the number 2(which I highly doubt since Mike Phelan doesn't have a mind of his own),there should be players constantly on our radar whose performance, contract status(and therefore availability) -among other factors-are to be monitored for possible signing.the only reason that will tell me that can excuse the saying that nobody is available in January is if no homework has been done.
Happy New Year to you too. smiley
We are saying the same thing . . . I'm sure they have players on their radar but the availability of these players is the question.
Say we still want Sneijder . . . will Inter sell him now in January? Very unlikely
Whoever we buy now will most usually be unknown and will carry a major risk a la Evra and Vidic.
Settling in time is another issue . . . it took those players 18 months to stamp their authority in the team.
Unless we find the player that will join in now and make their mark . . . we shouldn't do panic buys.

We shouldn't just buy to make up the numbers.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Liverpool Vs Newcastle United (3 - 1) On Friday 30th December 2011 by chamotex(op): 3:13am On Dec 30, 2011
Liverpool take on Newcastle in the Barclays Premier League on Friday evening and the Magpies look to consign the Reds to their first home defeat of the season.

It's no secret that Liverpool have struggled in front of goal at home this campaign on their way to six draws from nine matches and sooner or later they will be punished further if they continue to be so wasteful with chances.

It's all well and good recognising the need to put away more of their opportunities but Liverpool have shown no signs of improvement in the scoring department at home recently.

And with Luis Suarez banned due to the offensive gesture he made to Fulham fans earlier in the month their task is only going to be even more difficult as the controversial Uruguayan is central to everything they do.

Steven Gerrard could start for the first time since the Norwich game in October and that is an obvious positive for the home side

They sit one place and one point behind the Reds in the table after 18 games, thanks in no small part to their excellent away form that has seen them pick up 15 points on the road.

As well as their wins at Bolton, Wolves, Sunderland and Stoke they picked up a point at Old Trafford where, admittedly, fortune was perhaps on their side.

Nevertheless, the attributes that have seen them surprise many this season were there for all to see in that game - especially the excellent form of Tim Krul in goal and Demba Ba up front.

Newcastle have the sixth best defence away from home in the league and in Cheick Tiote and Yohan Cabaye they have a central midfield partnership to match any in the division.

Without Lucas, Liverpool aren't as dominant in midfield and with Gerrard just returning from injury the Reds could be a bit rusty in that department, especially with Charlie Adam struggling for form at present.

Defeats to Arsenal and Liverpool at Stamford Bridge are clear evidence that Chelsea aren't the force they were at home and that fact was underlined when they drew with Fulham on Boxing Day. It's only 21 months since Villa lost 7-1 here but they drew 3-3 back in January and will come into this game confident they are capable of getting a point.

The way Alex McLeish sets up his team they probably are, after all, they have drawn six of nine road games in the league this campaign. McLeish was delighted with the way his team defended in their 0-0 draw at Stoke on Boxing Day when they were bombarded with the high ball from set-pieces.
