The Nigerian nurse who was convicted after using voodoo threats to traffick vulnerable women from Nigeria to Germany to work as prostitutes has had her 14-year prison sentence increased.

Josephine Iyamu, 52, was originally sentenced for 13 years for the trafficking offences with a further year for perverting the course of justice. But after she appealed the sentence, it has now been increased to 18 years after judges found it to be ‘unduly lenient’.

Originally born in Liberia, Iyamu was made a British citizen in 2009 after being allowed to stay in the UK due to her nursing qualifications. She organised the travel of five women from Nigeria to Germany. Solicitor General Robert Buckland went to the Court of Appeal on Thursday to challenge the jail term.

But as she tearfully watched the proceedings via videolink from prison, Mr Buckland urged the three judges to increase the sentence imposed at Birmingham Crown Court in July.

After a hearing in London, Lord Justice Davis, Mrs Justice Simler and Mr Justice Dove ruled the total sentence imposed on Iyamu was ‘unduly lenient’ and upped it to 18 years.

Announcing the court’s decision, Lord Justice Davis warned that others found guilty of such ‘grave’ offences could expect severe sentences.

Iyamu, formerly from Bermondsey, south London, is the first person to be prosecuted in the UK for arranging or facilitating travel for sexual exploitation of victims with no connection to Britain. She was found guilty at the end of a 10-week trial of five offences under the Modern Slavery Act, and also one count of perverting the course of justice while on remand.

Report has it that about five girls were given letter of suspension for wearing Hijab in Isolo secondary school in Lagos. This was revealed in a press statement issued by Mutiat Orolu-Balogun, the executive director of Hijab Rights Advocacy Initiative. 

This reportedly happened despite that the Court of Appeal ruled that Muslim students can wear hijab to school in Lagos.

No fewer than 5 girls including the Assistant Head girl were given letter of suspension for wearing Hijab in school.

The new principal Mrs JO Sadare made it clear that she would not permit the Hijab to be worn in the school, despite the fact that the students has been doing so for more than two years.

The subsisting Judgment of the Court of Appeal in the case of Asiyat Abdulkareem vs LASG stated unequivocally that to wear Hijab by students whether within or outside the school was a Fundamental Human Right entrenched in the constitution.

Mrs Sadare is asking Muslim girls to choose between their religion and getting an education! And she is infringing on the Fundamental Rights of these students.

We are employing all legal and peaceful means to uphold the rights of our children. We implore all well meaning Lagosians, Nigerians and citizens of conscience to support us.

This is really creepy. A man was dressed properly and made to sit on a 'throne' at his own funeral recently. The unidentified man was dressed in red attire and a crown placed on his head as he was positioned on a 'throne' for the ceremony which saw his family and friends in attendance. 

The pictures which have gone viral online was shared by Nafi Ali who wrote; if I go to your funeral and you're not in a casket I'm leaving.

Earlier today various police units responded to intelligence with regards to a planned robbery.

Police spotted a BMW vehicle with three occupants along the N2 near Mandeni in South Africa.

When police attempted to stop the said vehicle, the occupants allegedly fired shots at the police officers.

Three suspects were killed during the shootout with police. Fortunately no police officers were injured during the shooting.

Troops of 21 Special Armoured Brigade deployed in a joint trans-border operation with troops of the Cameroonian Defence Forces, neutralised five (5) Boko Haram Terrorists in the border villages of Yabiri Kote and Bula Dadobe of Bama Local Government Area Borno State.

The joint operations, nicknamed: "Operation RAINBOW 15" which was conducted from Saturday 15 - Sunday 16 September 2018, came on the heels of the discovery of makeshift bases, established by the terrorists in Yabiri Kote and Bula Dadode from where they launched attacks on villages in Cameroon and Nigeria.

During the joint trans- border operations, the gallant troops recovered some items from the terrorists.

The items include:

a. 3 AK 47 rifles.

b. Two Improvised Explosive Device ( IED) Shells.

c. One primed Improvised Explosive Device (IED) Belt.

d. Two motorcycles.

e. Eight bicycles.

f. Improvised Explosive Device (IED) Vest.

g. One Boko Haram flag.

The trans-border operations have successfully cleared the insurgents from the general area of Kote Kura.

A homeless man identified as Godsave - was shocked by church members after he was made a millionaire within minutes during a service at Word Alive Centre International in Abuja yesterday. 

It was gathered that the pastor of the church heard about the man who "sleeps on the meat sellers table in the market every night and bathes in public toilet".

It was gathered that the man is always early to Church and he dances during all services like he has no worries, hence the pastor decided to change his situation by helping him. So he encouraged members to donate towards getting an accommodation for the man.

The response from members was so overwhelming.

1. Accomodation... paid for him
2. All household equipments settled
3. Money ( N1M )raised raised for him to start a business of his choice.

This was made possible through the members of the church.

A man was allegedly shot dead following a fracas with a soldier in Obigbo area of Rivers state. According to reports, the deceased met his untimely end while trying to intervene in a case after a suspected thief was arrested for stealing a motorcycle.

According to reports, the deceased simply identified as Chibuzor was among those who caught a thief that allegedly stole a motorcycle and was caught in the process. 

It was gathered that in the course of trying to take the suspected thief to the police station, a soldier was called in and an argument ensued.The soldier allegedly shot one of them during the fracas as he died on the spot. 

Report has it that the soldier immediately fled on a motorcycle after seeing what he had done.

A trending video shows the deceased laying in the pool of his blood after being shot.

The cause of the soldier's action is yet to be determined.

Five alleged Boko Haram terrorists were shot dead on Sunday after the insurgents ambushed troops of the Nigerian Army along Bama Road in Maiduguri, Borno State. According to the army, troops were on a clearance patrol in support of military operation, Rainbow, in the area when they were ambushed.

The troops neutralised the situation after a serious exchange of gunfire as several rifles and rounds of ammunition were recovered from the insurgents.

Fresh report has it that a gallant officer identified as David Babalola Egunbiyi, was killed in the ambush in Maidiguri. 

The 32-year-old officer is said to be the first son of the family and happily married with twins (Boys). 

His father, Peter Egunbiyi retired as the Divisional Police Officer(DPO) in Ondo State.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) will carry out aerial display as part of activities to mark Nigeria's 58th Anniversary Celebration.

Consequently, there will be movement of NAF aircraft within the Federal Capital Territory from now till 2 October 2018 as NAF pilots commence rehearsals for the occasion.

Fighter aircraft would be flying at low level during the rehearsals.

The NAF therefore wishes to advise members of the public not to panic but to go about their normal businesses.

A new baby has been rescued after being abandoned by her mother at a market in Delta state. According to reports, the young mother simply identified as Edesiri, gave birth to the baby at the newly commissioned ultra modern market in Sapele area and abandoned her there to die. 

It was gathered that on Saturday night, vigilante men in the area heard the baby's cry and traced her close to a female toilet in the market after following trails of blood. 

The security men notified their boss, Mr Tony Akpeki who arrived the scene and notified the authorities as they rushed the baby to the general hospital in Sapele by 12 midnight (on Saturday). 

It was also revealed that the girl who delivered the baby (Edesiri) later collapsed in another hospital due to the forceful removal of the placenta.

The first lady of Delta state, Mrs Edith Okowa, head of child welfare, commissioner of Women affairs, have been called to help the abandoned child.

A female member of the Ebonyi state house of assembly representing the Afikpo North East Constituency, Maria Ude Nwachi, has shared a story of what happened when she dragged the road with a man while driving her Hummer Jeep in Abuja in 2013. This made her to bash the man's car and was made to pay for it. 

The lawmaker took to her Facebook page on Wednesday (yesterday) to share the story as she gave ladies a secret on how to deal with men while driving instead of feeling "big".

As I entered my car, my head was in a confused mode, I decided to go to the meeting in Maitama but a few minutes later I changed my mind, I decided to go the one in Wuse 2, so I made a sharp turn around not even knowing that it was a one way, (I am only a few months in Abuja, still trying to navigate the terrain) and then tried to barge into a road that had many drivers waiting, as I put head, I completed snubbed the guy who actually had the right of way, I pretended I am not seeing him, I refused to make any eye contact with him, I have no idea what I was feeling like because it was obvious that this dude had the right of road, but in my head at that time I am thinking, he dare not dare hummer because he knows what will happen to his car, I was like, this guy make you no just try am, and in my head I knew he will not dare put head when he knows that I too will put head and that his Honda car will be re-arranged by my hummer if he tries it.

Dear Lord, what on earth AM I thinking and what earth I'm I feeling like, even Bill Gates cannot feel how I was feeling like, like say I over too much and have everything under control. Real Mgbeke feeling aiire. Well, self-made trouble is about to wake peaceful iyanga; THIS DUDE CALLED MY BLUFF AND PUT HEAD, the next thing you hear is GBOOOOOOO. My heart skipped 50 times in 1 minute, I froze. Fear engulfed me, Shakara ended sharp sharp. I no gree move and I no gree come out of car. At this time I am so embarrassed and feeling like (unprintable word).

I now had to shamefully ask some of the people gathered what I should do, If I should drive back or drive front to avoid further damage to the car as the front of this tiny car is now balancing inside the DEADLY AND PREDATORY EDGE of my hummer. His front car was in disarray, hummer mean abeg.

BACK TO THE VICTIM OF MY HUBRIS, the guy just sat quietly in his car watching the whole scenario, at this point even looking as his face was a problem for me because I know exactly what I did and that I was at fault. Finally I just looked at him and gave him a sign to drive out and pack that I will be behind him, when we alighted from the car, I just told him that I AM GUILTY AND THAT I WILL PAY FOR THE DAMAGES.

Many that gathered were expecting maybe a shouting match, but when they saw that I was very contrite and that we're sorting everything out coolly the crowd disappeared and I simply told him I know that had I just looked at him for a go ahead, the accident would not have happened, it happened because he called my bluff. Yes he called my bluff but he is not the guilty party, I am. He quickly called his car guy while he was doing that I pleaded with him to allow me attend my meeting that he should simply text me how much it will cost to do the whole thing and I will send it to him, I gave him my details and assured him I will not run away lol. He agreed and let me go. In the end I was only able to attend 1 meeting instead of 2 as planned. This happened about 3 weeks ago but it was just yesterday that I met up with him and gave him the money he spent repairing the care.

MORAL OF THIS INCIDENT: This whole thing was avoidable, had I just looked at this guy and smiled, he would have happily given me a go ahead and the whole drama would have been avoided. LADIES, do not dare men, their heart dey for their back lol, they will likely call your bluff. Abeg when you want to enter their way when driving just look at them and smile and it is done. But if you wan play heavy chic wey no send, your name will be sorry; they will send you.

The gallant troops of 145 Battalion, Operation LAFIYA DOLE located at the northern part of Borno Stated dazed Boko Haram terrorists that made the mistake of attacking the location on12th September 2018. The gallant neutralised countless terrorist and damaged their weapons and equipment. The resilient troops are on hot pursuit of the remaining terrorists that may have escaped.

The incident comes less than a week after Boko Haram fighters struck at a military location in Gudumbali, Guzamala local government area.

Some witnesses said soldiers were killed in the attack but the army denied losing anyone.

In its renewed campaign of violence, the insurgents have been carrying out attacks on military locations in the north-east.

Commenting on this Ahmad Salkida, a journalist known to have access to the leadership of the sect, said Boko Haram had been overrunning military formations and piling up arms for something “big”.

“The insurgents are busy piling up arms, by overrunning one military base, after another, for something “big” and what could that be?” he had tweeted last week.

The young man who was said to be test-driving the "customised" automobile, drove it round the school to the admiration of other students.

Few days ago, Boko Haram insurgents invaded and attacked Gudumbali town in Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno State. Scores of the terrorists who stormed the town with several pick-ups, gun trucks and were shooting at troops’ location with AA (Anti-Aircraft guns), which unsettled troops before the troops regrouped and foiled the terrorists attempt to take over the town. 

The army revealed that the troops also inflicted overwhelming casualty on the terrorists due to superior fire power while some of the terrorists fled to the fringes of Lake Chad.

Normalcy has been restored to the town after the attack. 

Meanwhile, following the new wave of attacks being launched on troop’s bases by Boko Haram in a bid to retake Nigerian territories, Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. General Tukur Buratai has relocated the Operational headquarters of Army Headquarters to Gudumbali in Guzamala local government area of Borno state.

It was reported that in a bid to finally curtail the recent sporadic attacks by the terrorists in the North East, the COAS has relocated his operations HQ to Gudumbali in Borno State.

Report filtering in from Badarawa town in Shinkafi Local Government Area of ​​Zamfara State, has it that at least 11 people have been killed after unknown gunmen stormed their community this morning by 9.30 am.

It was gathered that the attackers immediately opened fire on the villagers and killed at least 11 people, with about 23 persons injured. 

A local resident disclosed that some of the victims have been taken to hospitals in the local government and Gusau, the capital of the state.

Meanwhile, Zamfara State Governor Abdulaziz Yari recently said that more people were killed in his state than in Benue, Taraba and Plateau States.

He called on his colleagues in the three states not to view the situation as ethnic or religious conflicts, but pure criminality.

Speaking at a town hall meeting on the federal government’s measures to curb killings, Yari said: “The number of people killed in Zamfara state outnumbered those killed in the three states combined and those responsible for the killings are somewhat professing the same religion with those being killed.”
