A move for DEREGULATION that would have meant enhanced local refinery capacity that would INITIALLY result in increased fuel pump prices but reduction over time accelerated by this type of crude oil price drop. The federal government would have STOPPED paying subsidies and instead be receiving licencing fees & taxes to be SHARED as usual with the 36 states and 774 LGAs!

The question is why are we so clueless by focusing on short term POPULARITY gains and neglecting the SACRIFICE needed to pursue long term POLICY gains

And I guess Sure-P has been a resounding success.

Above are the few I can remember. These are policies implemented and many nigerians are still reaping the benefits. Not chicken and bowl policies we are not seeing but only read in newspapers.

FYI, taking Britain as an example petrol was sold at around 120p (£1.20/ N330 approx) per litre, it now cost around 118p per litre! That's a reduction of 2 effin pence per litre. Coming to the cost of oil production from shale formations, small scale producers based in the shale sweet spots of the usa can even produce a barrel of oil for as low as $35 per barrel ( how cheap can it get) and in other areas it is produced at about $67 - $70 per barrel which us still cheaper than the break-even price of producing crude oil in most places in the usa.

In the summer months it was sold at 131p and its now 118p even though more than 50% of that cost is in duties to the government. Did you consider prices in USA too?

That a barrel of oil is now $65 does not mean the cost of producing it or bringing it to the pump will change. Pump price has not been reduced in the UK, usa and across Europe. His attempt at using a bushmeat seller's logic has failed woefully.

Even if we refine the crude oil here, the cost if producing a barrel of oil would still be more than $65 per barrel. Even the average cost of producing the shale which people consider cheaper, is above $70 per barrel. As long as we don't refine crude here, it would take months for us to see reduction in pump prices.

Our greedy oil marketers too will not allow us feel the positive impact even when they start getting oil at reduced prices, they would want to maximise their profit.

You are the one saying rubbish. US, Britain and Europe are seeing the lowest pump prices in four years. It has been reduced and it's not bushmeat seller's logic. It's common sense logic.

This is the best time to remove the subsidy. Instead, we are told the subsidy would be halved next year to 450 billion (I don't know who they are deceiving). The system itself is messed up. Even if the price of petrol doesn't drop, why is diesel still priced highly? Even though the naira was devalued, there should have been a difference.

This is what happens when you have a mono-economy

The naira never appreciates in time of high oil prices but very quick to depreciate when the oil price falls. Apart from the mono economy which is a problem, the increased earnings is being looted and not reinvested in our future. This for me is sufficient reason to kick pdp out from the centre. When oil prices recover or exceeds previous highs, it is certain that 168 will become the new normal in readiness for the next price crash.

So if the calculated annual subsidy bill at current rate is 156billion naira, why is over 400billion in the budget for 2015? Or is it the less consumed kerosene that accounts for 300billion? Or is it an expectation (contrary to IAEA estimates) that oil prices will rise? Or the naira will trade at 200naira to a dollar?

Fuel subsidy is usually resorted to when the price of crude oil in the international market is higher than the consumers can afford. The government then pays the difference between what it's citizens can conveniently pay and the international price. That difference is usually called subsidy. The higher the international price, the more subsidy the government pays. Whereas if the price is lower, the less subsidy is paid.
Mathematically, if the cost of buying refined petroleum product in the international market is N150, and the government decides to reduce the burden on the masses by fixing the price of, say, petrol at N100, the subsidy on petroleum to the government is N50. Now if the price has falling, as we are currently experiencing, to N120, the government may decide to reduce the price of the product for the public or reduce its subsidy payment.
When government in 2011 increase the pump price of petrol to N97, crude oil was selling at between $102 and $115 per barrel. This the government translates to about N 141 per liter of petrol. The government decided to pay the difference of N44 (N141 - N97) as subsidy. Now if the price of crude at the international market has reduced to between $74 and $80 it therefore means the price per liter has also reduced.
This means either the subsidy paid by the government have been completely wiped out, or a massive reduction has occurred. Since we are passing through economic crunch by the reduction in price of crude oil, our main economic stay, the government may not reduce the pump price of petroleum product. Neither will it increase it.
So all the hues and cries by our arm chair critics about an increase in pump price of petrol because of a reduction in the fuel subsidy payment in 2015 budget estimate is neither here nor there. The government may even reduce the pump price of fuel, as Yaradua government did in 2008, when crude oil price crashed at the international market. The price was reduced from N70 to N65.
2015, being election year, I don't see Jonathan increasing the pump price of fuel. There may likely be a reduction.

If the naira depreciates to 200 naira as is being speculated, there has to be an increase in oil prices if the subsidy bill is to be halved and if oil prices remain at $74. Next year will be a turbulent one. I expect the queues to return if government tries to halve the subsidy bill while maintaining current oil prices - the subsidy thieves are still in business and we are at their mercy.

Bola Tinubu has clearly propounded his own solution in the last paragraph. It is not one of austerity but expanded government spending as was done in the United States. He wants the government to print more naira to stimulate the economy and build infrastructure. I do not know how effectual this policy would be but it is something different and an answer to those that are saying APC has not brought forward any policy based on the write up.

It's simple - cripple the northern voting bloc. It started in 2010 after the MEND bomb blasts when GEJ tried to link the north to the Oct 1st bombings. He did the same thing in 2011 when he kept quiet in 2011 as election violence ravaged the north. He has announced severally that it is our turn to experience terrorism. I guess he is happy now that Nigerians understand what terrorism is all about. He has never displayed an iota of leadership in the face of needless violence.
