PoliticsRe: FG To Sell Discos To New Investors - Zainab Mohammed by chibjohn(m): 11:30am On Oct 13, 2017
You are talking what you don't know. What proof do you have that GE actually bidded for those DISCOS and didn't win? The problem is that most Nigerians don't understand the real problems of the power sector.
During the privatisation, those discos were too risky to be invested on and smart companies like GE stayed away. It is those Nigerians that invested that had the courage to do so. Please get your facts right.
Bolustical:
Just for the sake of electoral patronage, GEJ rejected the likes of GENERAL ELECTRIC and other established and well known electricity corps who had the financial wherewithal to transform the power sector.

He opted for the likes of Tony Elumelu and Abubakar who never had one year experience in power, the FG even had to bail them out. The worse is that these things are legally backed.

Years later, his supporters are expecting miracles from Fasola.

YorubaNigga:
Pls tell us why it ain't possible. We are here to learn
I like you. You are not like other ignorant Nigerians that argue blindly. How I wish every Nigerian will take your approach instead of insults. The answer is very technical and I don't know your background but I will try to be as simple as possible in my explanations.

The power that can be gotten from hydro source can be calculated with this formula:
Power = e × Q × g × h
Where e = density of the flowing water
Q = Volume flow rate of the water
g = acceleration due to gravity
h = elevation or height of fall of the water
The hydro turbines simply convert the potential energy of falling water to kinetic energy in the rotation of the turbine shaft coupled to a generator.

If any of the terms into the equation above for a source is zero then we can't get power from that source since the whole equation will be zero.

We can get power from river Niger because as water its density and volume flow rate can be measured and it flows from a height( elevation). So all the terms in the equation above is completed and none is zero.

In the case of the Atlantic ocean, yes since its water the density is there and volume flow rate may be there or maybe can be artificially created but it doesn't flow from a height. Its flow doesn't have elevation hence the h term in the equation above is zero making the power obtainable as can be seen from the equation zero.
A lot of research is ongoing on how to circumvent this but it hasn't gone past laboratory experiments. One of such researches was done by my friends during my final year in school.

So in simple terms, because Atlantic ocean doesn't flow from a height( no elevation) and its flow rate and direction is complex, then it is difficult to get commercially viable power from it. This doesn't mean that there may not be small generating plants at specific locations of it( even though I don't know of any) but nothing substantial can be gotten from it hence no body has ventured into it.

I hope I was simple as it can be and that you will understand.

Reading all the comments on this thread and as a student of Nigeria power industry and a highly trained professional in the power business, I can only conclude that most Nigeria youths are arrogantly ignorant and have refused to learn due to unnecessary pride. We need to understand how decisions are made especially business decisions and multilateral agreements. The most stable of such agreements are the ones with a win-win situations for the parties involved and this is such hence it has lasted for many years. Its cheaper for Benin and Niger to just buy power from Nigeria and run away from the capital cost of constructing a dam at their end that will negatively affect ours. If we refuse to sell to them, because they can't stay without power they will be forced to construct theirs and this will greatly reduce the water flow to our dams thereby rendering them useless to the extent that we may not be able to generate for our domestic use let alone exporting. Remember we generate and just sell a small fraction to them. No law stops them from damming Niger at their end, so if we refuse to sell power to them and they dam it, then the fraction from our dams that we enjoy domestically after exporting to them may not be there again. So who will lose at the end? Don't forget that selling power to them generates foreign exchange for us too. This is international politics and you have to be careful. I am not a fan of Fashola because even before he took over I knew he can't do much but this is the best we can get from this agreement. The problem with the power sector is enormous and our leaders have been playing to the gallery.

An ignorant man calling informed people correcting him ignorant.
Understand the politics now. We have to sell power to them because if we don't, they will be forced to dam river Niger from there end in order to generate hydroelectricity and since the water flow to our dams is from there end due to the elevation, no water will be getting to our dams that can generate reasonable electricity and so our dams will be starved of water so we won't be able to generate power. So to discourage them from doing that, we have to sell power to them.

Now I know you are the pathological liar. Your mention that you work in Egbin has exposed you. It made me to run a background check on you to ascertain your claim since the Egbin employees I know won't be spewing all these trash that you are saying. If you had known me in real life you wouldn't have said that. I understand some people hide under different usernames to claim who they are not but if you have to lie do it sensibly.

Your name is Ab****m E**h. Yes during your NAPTIN rotation you were posted to Egbin to spend around 3 months for your field posting around 2014. That was the only period you were in Egbin. And I know how NAPTIN trainees are treated there. You dont do any major work. You cannot work fully in operations. They just rotate you through the maintenance depts and you spend some days in operations. You never did run shift so I don't know when you spent the night generating the power you claim you did. Right now you are no where near Egbin. Spending 3 months in Egbin or 1 year in NAPTIN wouldn't open your eyes to the real issues of the sector till you get involved with the real players.

Before you ask who is this person that has opened my nyash like this. I have a strong business connection with Egbin and I know almost all the employees. Even if I don't know you facially I can verify whether you are one within seconds.

I have passed through some NAPTIN trainings too so I understand that you may be talking from the few things some biased instructors taught you during your program if you actually completed it.

NAPTIN is a noble body but you are not a good ambassador of it at all. If you had taken your training seriously, you will have been better informed than you are now.

So please stop claiming to work in Egbin because you don't. Learn to get your facts right and study about how business are run.

realpoacher:
My friend shut da Bleep up! You are a bigger goat than the person you are defending. You think that I am a novice in the power sector?... Or you think that because I am not yet throwing statistics and industrial registers into this discuss means that I am a "jew"?.. FYI, that same few hours of power you see in your house is what I work my ass of(most times overnight) with other engineers to generate from Egbin here so show some respect.

The problem with people like you or other players in the power industry is too much complaints, beaurecracy, and bottlenecks when what you should concern yourself with is how to look beyond these problems and provide Nigeria with constant light all problems notwithstanding. I mean look at all what you have been saying since, you have been telling us 101 reasons why the power sector can't work making it an impossible venture. I bet, given your kind of person, you would have given us a thousand and one reason why the telecom industry wouldn't have worked too when Obasanjo wanted to ditch Nitel for MTN and Co. I am a realist but also an optimist. I look beyond problems and seek solutions.

Nigeria power problems will be solved with 100% metering and full privatization devoid of Government interference or unjust regulations. Quote me anywhere!! Allow the existing companies to remain but bring in the world big players to build, generate and distribute from scratch till finish. Let them bill us 30k, 50k per month on a pay-as-you-go meters. Those who can afford it will buy their cards while those who can't should remain with NEPA.... Power will be everywhere.

And as for Security and government agencies not paying their bills. It's a small issue, atleast I am very sure that every force man recharges his phone himself. 100% privatization will settle that.

It's only a foolish and a stupid man who keeps doing the same everytime and expects different results. We can't keep giving these companies credits to put into existing facilities, they are old and moribund

Nonsense

You are truly funny. Let me not go down to your level to insult you like you did to me. You posted a fake link without any content in wikipedia at your pathetic attempt to contribute to a matter you know nothing about. Please post a better link because I truly want to read that article that talks about how Egbin was gifted out. who is a liar between the two of us is evident since your article is without content.

The problem I see in you is that your hatred for Jonathan is beclouding your reasoning from knowing the truth. I am not here to support nor criticise any govt past or present.

The question is: was privatization the best thing to do? My answer is yes if done well.
But was it done well? Not really, it could have been done better.

The mistakes have been made, we only have to talk about how to remedy them.

I agree with you the those assets could have worth more than they were sold but considering the present issues on return on investment, those selling price are not that bad.

You need to read more. Have you read the power sector reform act 2005? Was Jonathan in power then? You need to go to NERCs website and download all the MYTO and read. You also need to read Power purchase agreements between these Gencos and NBET. Also read the gas supply agreement (GSA) and gas transportation service agreement (GTSA) between the Gencos and the gas companies. After you must have read all these, then you can quote me so that we can discuss. Stop arguing blindly.

You also need to read books on how business decisions are taken. The truth is that Obasanjo started the privatisation process, Yaradua halted it and Jonathan completed it.
51% stake in Egbin was paid for during obasanjo's regime. So Egbin was sold then what was remaining was handing over modalities. Jonathan came in and raised the stake to 70% and completed the process.
Yes there are issues at the discos that needs to be sorted out.

So please read!!! before coming into a public forum like this and show your ignorance thereby deceiving others.

serikigoro:
I would have prefered to call you something better but i cant find any . YOU ARE A LIAR!!! PERIOD!!! Here the link on details on how egbin was gifted out! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egbin_Thermal_Power_Station.

Since when did Nigerian politicians start investing in toxic assets or any investment at all. They only invest when it is a bazaar or abroad. You claim foreign investors were not interested yet local politicians were jostling for it as if their lives depended on it. Again Jonathan was nothing but a disaster that has already happened. He sold what could have birthed the industrial revolution to incompetent cronies who like him had no clue, as completely clueless. That is why 4 years after common meter to measure consumption they cannot provide , even when you pay for the meter it takes several months to arrive. Jonathan, I repeat is a disaster that has happened already.
PoliticsRe: Privatized Power Companies In Nigeria And Their Owners by chibjohn(m): 11:47am On May 31, 2017
First let's be civil and respect each other with in our words. I am an authority in this as I work in one of these companies and have attended many seminars and read many books written by professionals on that aspect. Having cleared you on that let me educate you.

In making business investment decisions, risks on return on investment is the major consideration. No business man invests money where he is not sure of getting it back. The way our power industry is structured, no sane business man will just throw in money into it. Do you know that the Gencos gets paid a paltry 20-25% value of the power they generate monthly? How will such a business man borrow money and put into a business that isn't doing well? If you are a business man will you do so? The DISCOS don't get paid by the customers for the power they consume and hence they don't remit the true amount of their power allocation to the market operator which spirals back to the gencos not getting paid. This illiquidity is the bane of the power sector. If we have to grow the sector, the govt have to make sure that it is solved.
So on your talk on inviting new investors to come and build power plants, they were actually invited and they didn't see it to be viable. I know of a lot of licenses that have been granted to foreign companies to build power plants in Nigeria but they are hesitant to do so due to the aforementioned issues. Can you venture into a business when you are seeing that the others in that line of business are not doing well?

I have read due diligence reports of prospective investors in the power industry and the recurring issue is always the liquidity issue.

Yes the investors have not build new plants but I am very sure and have being part of one of them that is in serious negotiations with world bank for financing to do so but world bank is hesitant due to the liquidity issue. They don't want govt intervention funds, they just want to make money like business people.

So how can we fix it?
First we have to fix a growth stimulating tariff for the power industry. That was the only thing that made the telecom industry to grow. You know how much a sim card was sold then compared to now. The current tariff charged coupled with the inefficiencies can never stimulate growth in the sector. The companies need to make gains and produce profitable year end financial statements that financial institutions will see and would not hesitate to lend them money for investment and expansion.
Also the citizen will have to be patriotic enough to pay for such exorbitant prices that will have to be charged with the hope that it will stimulate growth in the sector. Energy theft will have to be collectively frowned at by all and sundry.
The govt on their part will put all regulatory framework that will ensure reasonable return on investment and be ready to always provide letters of credit or guarantees required for investment financing in the sector.

PLEASE NOTE: You are only short changing yourself when you tag another persons idea to be stupid just because it doesn't align with the way you think. The best you can do is to ask for clarifications and evaluate it with yours so that you can stand with the best.

Please don't fail to let me know if you need further education!!

bakynes:
Don't quote me with your stupid ideas if you don't have meaningful ideas to pass.

I am not saying they should buy those assets, they should be invited to build their own facilities not buy the old moribond facilities.

It worked in the case of Telecoms so it will work in the case of Power, if they know no investor will come and invest in the sector then they should have kept running the assets themselves instead of selling them to people that will only make matters worse.

The politicians that bought these power facilities, have not built a single facility still operating with the old NEPA/PHCN facilities expecting the govt to still give them intervention funds from time to time. Is that what you call Privatization?
PoliticsRe: Privatized Power Companies In Nigeria And Their Owners by chibjohn(m): 10:57am On May 31, 2017
You are not informed. Most of those assets were sold by obasanjo. Obasanjo sold 51% stake in Egbin power plant before leaving office. GEJ only increased the stake to 70% during the 2013 privatization. You need to stop reading online forums and go for true documents. Nobody else could have bought those companies apart from these people that did because of our economic condition. Foreign investors don't just throw in money into a country, they do due diligence study to know the risks involved in doing business in a country so as to ascertain if they will get back their investments. The risks involved in buying those companies then were so much that its only indigenous firms that were ready to take such risks. Those risks are what's manifesting today in form of regulatory issues, liquidity issues and finance issues.
bakynes:
You are a stupid lady, what did he say that is wrong, is it not GEJ that sold the PHCN asset to all these people?Obasanjo only renamed NEPA to PHCN,he did not Privatize it, GEJ sold all the PHCN asset to all these politicians.

In 2013, when they said they wanted to privatize power,I thought they were inviting international Electricity companies like EDF Suez, Gazprom,General Electric etc to build their own facilities so there could be competition, which will inturn bring about 24 hrs supply, just like it was done in the Telecoms sector which we are all enjoying now, not knowing GEJ was selling all the Assets to politicians and Cronies, who neither have the expertise nor funding to run these assets.

PoliticsWe Are All Human Beings First Before Our Tribes Come Into Play by chibjohn(op): 2:20am On Jan 21, 2017
WE ARE HUMAN BEINGS FIRST!!!

I just came off a thread on this nairaland where discussions are ongoing on the military killings of IPOB members in solidarity match for trump at Port Harcourt today and I couldn't help but weep for my dear country-Nigeria. The height of tribal hatred is just so much even when lives are lost carelessly. What saddens me most is that nairalanders are youths in majority which puts a question mark to our future peaceful coexistence.

For the records, though I am an Igbo(not IBO please) man I am not an IPOB member. I believe in a peaceful and prosperous one Nigeria. Nothing in IPOB's method of fighting for Biafra comes out to me as a serious means of actualizing it. Nations don't secede by carrying placards and disturbing the peace of the cities. Secession can only be achieved by careful thought out plans which includes but not limited to men of international repute coming out to voice their support for the movement and forming of formidable international alliances.

I don't understand the rationale behind the 'trump solidarity match'. For Christ sake trump is in USA taking his oath of office and has always said that its America first signifying that he doesn't care about any other country. You are here matching for him and getting killed over nothing. I can only pray that God forgives you and allow you into his Kingdom.

Now to the reason I decided to write this. I weep for this country when I read the numerous tribal 'text' wars in Nairaland. Most times you see one or more ethnic group members rejoicing on the death of members of another that was killed extra judicially by the military over nothing. We are all humans please!!! Life is life no matter the ethnic group involved and its very bad to rejoice over the mishap of another ethnic group if we truely want Nigeria to move forward. It saddens me to know that the nairalanders that do this are youths in their twenties to thirties. I can't help but imagine how the future of this country is going to be if our youths can overlook our differences and understand that we are in Nigeria together. Any time one ethnic group suffers, it directly or indirectly affects the others.

I currently work in a company with diverse people and have come to appreciate the benefits we can get from our diversity if we subdue the negative effects of our differences. We are one!!! I have learnt from both Hausa and Yoruba Engrs and have come to sometimes like their approach to work more than that of my fellow Igbo Engrs. No ethnic group should solely lay claim to absolute wisdom. We are all humans with limited wisdom of which if we overlook our individual differences and forge ahead together, Nigeria will be a better place. Please stop this hatred my fellow youths. We are one!!!

The recklessness of our military and their blatant disregard to life is what all and sundry should come out to condemn. No body should have the right to take a life he/she cannot create. If they have to, the rules of engagement was made to guide their actions. The incessant military killings from the north to the south is what everybody should condemn no matter the ethnic group involved.

When the unarmed shiites got killed in the north and Elzakszaky is been incarcerated unlawfully please let's unanimously voice it out that IT IS WRONG!

When the military opens fire on unarmed IPOB members just because they are protesting or doing a solidarity match harmlessly. Please let's voice it out that IT IS WRONG. What happened to the rules of engagement, use of rubber bullet or tear gas. Why will the military use live ammunition on 'unarmed' civilians and no one is telling them they erred instead we are laughing at the other party over the lost of precious lives. IT IS WRONG!

When the military out of their carelessness mistakenly bombed an IDP camp killing scores of people, instead of rejoicing at the grief of another we need to come together as one and voice it out that IT IS WRONG.

When the military open fire on unarmed IPOB members in their meeting, even though we disagree on their agenda that shouldn't stop us from voicing it out that IT IS WRONG that precious lives were wasted in such a manner.

When Fulani herdsmen go around different parts of the country killing innocent souls, please let's unanimously voice it out that IT IS WRONG.

When Southern Kaduna Christians are massacred, we owe it to them to voice it out together that IT IS WRONG.

My fellow youths, I urge you from this day onward to stop rejoicing or laughing at the grief of other people even though you don't agree with their ideology. We are human beings first before our ethnic groups came into play. A wrong is a wrong. Always say IT IS WRONG when it is actually wrong

WE ARE HUMANS TOGETHER!!!

I have never been a fan of mobile banking app because of its conditions in Nigeria. The too many hitches like connection error, service time out and too many charges, deductions from accounts. I always frown at mobile banking but I have no choice but to move with time.
First bank is one bank I was not a fan of. Right from unset I had been hearing about the poor services of the bank, their rude customer care agents, massive unorganized queue. I didn’t like it but fortunately (because there is no unfortunate in my dictionary) I was given the bank by NYSC for receiving my monthly allowance. But yet they still have great number, highest customers in Nigeria. I had no choice that to use the bank. Unless maybe I didn’t want to be paid by the FG. Fortunately, my Place of primary assignment (PPA) was far from the main town and there is no bank and ATM in the small town. So we have to move to move to the main Port Harcourt town to withdraw and any form of financial transactions.
In late April, 2016, one of my sisters was planning on sending me a huge sum of money for something important. And that same month my domain was nearing expiration on 30th of same month.
On the 30th I was preparing to go to Port Harcourt to renew my domain when I encountered some challenges. I couldn’t even leave my PPA to Port Harcourt. I was stuck, and there was no bank in the community, no ATM and I couldn’t reach anyone who was able to help do the transaction. And I couldn’t just back-out, I don’t want to lose my domain name. I was left with doing an online transaction. What I was running away from, I had to go for it. It’s not a choice, it’s just the best option at that moment. I downloaded the First bank mobile app which I used to pay for my domain. That marked a new turn, and I began using the Firstmobile, though not frequently.

On 2/06/2016, my sister sent N210,000 into my first bank account. Ofcourse I was happy because it felt like God has buttered my bread and added meat untop of my rice and stew. And no be say she borrow me ooo, na dash she dash me the money. I was hoping to leave the money and use it to start up any small scale business after my passing out. N210,000 plus the money I have in the account and other cash I hoped to be in the account.

On 8/06/2016 at about 10:17am, I was coming back from Port Harcourt. I entered a car in Choba going to Buguma. The journey was so smooth after passing the police check point after Choba park. When we got to Ogbakiri junction to divert to Kalabari kingdom. We met some men thinking it was just the usual police check point. Not knowing that they are kidnappers. Everything looked like a dream. Not until they asked us to get down from the car and began beating us. Two of them had guns. Within 10 minutes, they had pushed the 5 of us inside their jeep. We began hearing gunshots from behind. I guessed the police where fast approaching. The kidnappers had to move us out of the place. I thought the police would keep up chase, but it wasn’t. I was full of fear. I didn’t even though where we were being taken to. I no know road. Na corper I be oo. We were taken to an uncompleted building and made to seat on the ground. We were 5 they kidnapped, a young woman and 3 men. I was the only youth there.

We were taken to one uncompleted building, collected our pulse, phones, handbags and my wallet. I had heard of kidnappers collecting ATM cards and pins from victims and zapping their accounts, but this was it! They collected the money from us and ATM cards. Funny enough we were just 2 that had our ATM cards with us. My other fellow passengers said they don’t use ATM. And the kidnappers said they were not releasing those without ATM. They will have to call their families to pay ransomed. I was so scared within me. “All the money I had in my account will be taken away,” I thought to myself. “How will tell my story? The money I was planning to use to startup small business.” My second account in another bank has only N23,000 in it. “Thank God I left the ATM card at home, if not they will still demand for it and will still collect the remaining money in it,” I thought to myself, because they said they will collect all the monies in our account before they release us. Even if it takes 3 or 5 five days, they will keep us there till they get what they want.

I gave them my ATM card and pins. The other man gave them his own too. It was sad because he had about 4 ATM cards with him. He gave it to them with the pins. I was so scared when two of them went to withdraw the money. I was just praying in my mind for God to perform miracle and my ATM card will just be deactivated or for it not to pay.

20 minutes later, my phone rang. One of them still with us there cut it. And it rang again and again. He asked who owns the phone. I said I was the one. He said if not because of he loved the ringtone, he would have smashed it. “So you dey watch Empire?” he asked me. I said “Yes.” My ringtone was “ready to go” by Jamal from empire. Infact I had almost all the songs used in the series. I tried to see if I could chat with him, if that will make us friendly and will turn his mind around to tell his fellow kidnappers not to withdraw my money. I told him that I have almost all the empire songs used in the movie series. He said it was nice. He asked how I got them. I told him I downloaded them online. He said he only stopped in season 2, episode 10. I told him I had watched it till episode 18 in season 2. I told him I have the whole series till the current one on my phone. I told him I could even send them to him from my phone. He smiled. He said I was not going to get my phone back. That they can only give me my sim back. He asked me the password of my phone and I told him. Na so he open the phone. 5 minutes later, he said he couldn’t find the film. I told him where he will find the series and gave him password to that folder. I believed he had challenges operating the phone. He had to give me my phone to open the folder. I was so scared as my hands shake while operating the phone. As I was swiping to get to the folder, I came across the Firstmobile app. Something in me said, “why don’t you transfer your money in First bank to your GTB account.” At first I was scared, I didn’t know if the ones that had gone to withdraw had already completed the transaction. Or in the process I was caught! I had to summon courage, on my network as fast as possible. I logged in and my N265,540 was still there in my first bank account. I transferred the money to my GT bank account. Infact the network in the area was so fast that I did everything within 45 seconds. The kidnapper that gave me my phone felt I was wasting a lot of time. He thought maybe I was sending a text message to people about the kidnap. He came I asked why I was still wasting time. I told him I was still on it as I had already logged out and opened the empire movie folder for me.

Barely 15 minutes time, they received a call from the ones that went to withdraw that my account has only N540. Nothing dey there. They said they were going to hold me there. I began pleading that I am just a corper.

After 3 hours, I was released but my phone and other stuff in my wallet was taken. My NYSC I.D card was also given to me. They said they just released me because I had nothing to offer. I was able to leave the environment only to discover I was in Bayelsa state. And that was how First bank app saved me from being duped by kidnappers.

How Mobile App Saved Me From Being defrauded of Huge sum by Kidnappers In Rivers by onismate: 9:57am On Jul 11

“Thank God I left the ATM card at home, if not they will still demand for it and will still collect the remaining money in it,” I thought to myself, because they said they will collect all the monies in our account before they release us. ziggymelosky:
Ahmadiyya area is situated just after Abule Egba bustop in Lagos. If you are passing along Abule Egba -Sango expressway,it is the 3rd bus stop after Abule Egba.It is on both sides of the the road. They are connected on 32 kva power line. Not to be exaggerating the area has constant light of about 22 hrs in a day. Some days they dont take light.Even if they take light it doesnt last upto 10 to15 mins before power is restored,Even with the epileptic supply of light in the country light there is vey stable. Most interesting the cost of electricity is normal like any other place.
I don't know what you mean by 32kva line. Well as an engineer I can tell you that there is no power line with such a nomenclature in nigeria power distribution network. Let me assume you mean 33KV. Well I can also tell you that is not the place with best power supply in Lagos. There is an estate in a remote part of lagos that sometimes gets up to 2 months of uninterrupted power supply.
