agwom: As Nigerians await rulings from governorship tribunals in five more states, there could be surprises. Daily Trust on Sunday writes on developments in those states.
Kano
While it was earlier reported that the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Kano would deliver its verdict in October, it has reserved judgement. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its governorship candidate, Abba Kabir Yusuf, had filed a petition challenging the victory of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. The three-man tribunal, led by Justice Halima S. Muhammad, said it would communicate the date to the parties affected once it is fixed.
Final written addresses by all the parties were adopted at Wednesday’s sitting. While elaborating on his written address, counsel to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Ahmed Raji, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), argued that the latitude would enable him present true certified copies of the document to prove his case. He alleged that the bulk of documents presented by the petitioners were pink copies, and urged the court to dismiss the case.
Also in his written address, counsel to Governor Ganduje, Offiong Offiong (SAN), argued that where an election result was challenged, the petitioner must provide two tables, one for the election result declared by the INEC and the other for the scores he considered as correct. Offiong said the petitioners failed to provide those two tables, thereby relying on the INEC result.
He also urged the tribunal to dismiss the petition. On his part, counsel to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alex Izinyon (SAN), argued that the petitioners made a categorical assertion that the cancellation of results in 207 polling units by the INEC was unlawful and unjustifiable, but they failed to prove that. Mr Kanu Agabi (SAN), who spoke on behalf of the petitioners, said, “Our contention is that the first petitioner scored the majority of lawful votes cast in the March 9 election.”
Sokoto
In Sokoto, the opposition APC and its candidate, Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu, filed a petition against Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of the PDP. Tambuwal, who won his second term as governor, was in the APC during his first tenure before joining the PDP. In one of the recent sittings, the INEC reportedly failed to produce any of its 12 witnesses listed before the tribunal.
At the resumed sitting of the tribunal penultimate Tuesday, the first respondent, INEC, was supposed to have presented its witnesses, but its lead counsel, Alhassan Umar, told the tribunal that they would not do so. He said, “We have reviewed the petition and the witnesses called by the petitioners. We will rely on the evidence we have extracted from the cross-examination of the witnesses of the petitioners. We are within the law and the law allows that. So we will not be calling witnesses.”
In his reaction, the lead counsel to the petitioners, the APC and Aliyu Sokoto, Dr Alex Izinyon (SAN), said: “They claimed to have 12 witnesses, but they have failed to produce them. We are ever ready.” The lead counsel to the second respondent, Governor Tambuwal, Emmanuel Ukala (SAN), said: “We were actually taken by surprise for the first respondent to say they are not calling witnesses today.
Plateau
The Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Jos, on August 22, said it reserved judgement in the petition filed by Jeremiah Useni of the PDP against Governor Simon Lalong of the APC, after all the parties involved adopted their final written addresses. The chairman of the tribunal, Justice H.A Suleman, who made the declaration after listening to the parties in the matter, said the day of the judgement would be communicated to parties. When the case came up for adoption of written addresses, Mr Lalong, APC and the INEC asked the tribunal to dismiss the petition, which they said was lacking in merit.
The counsel to the INEC, Clement Onuuenuunor, argued that based on the evidence of the prosecution witness 71, INEC head of operations, the governorship election was free, fair and credible, contrary to the position of the petitioners. “According to the witness, the election was conducted in substantial compliance with the electoral act and INEC laid down guidelines. In view of this, the petitioners have not been able to prove their claims, and so, we urge this tribunal to dismiss the application for lack of merit, “Mr Onuuenuunor prayed.
Also speaking, L.U. Fagbemi (SAN), Mr Lalong’s counsel, asserted, “We submit that the petitioners have failed to prove any entitlement to any of their reliefs sought in their petition, therefore, the petition should be dismissed.”
Bauchi
The immediate past Governor Muhammed Abdullahi Abukakar of the APC petitioned the victory of Governor Mohammed Bala Abdulkadir of the PDP. It was reported that the resumed sitting of the tribunal in the state was disrupted after police fired teargas to disperse an unruly crowd in the court.
The crowd became restive when Governor Bala Mohammed left the tribunal after appearing as the first respondent in the case. His supporters and those of the former governor hauled verbal assaults, leading to fisticuffs, which attracted the attention of the police and other security agents present at the Magistrate’s Court premises, where the tribunal is sitting. The teargas, however, spread to the courtroom, leading to temporary stoppage of proceedings as people, including the judges, lawyers and witnesses, covered their noses and eyes to protect themselves.
The three judges, petitioners and the defence teams left the courtroom as people battled with the effect of the teargas. The PDP had already called its first witness in the case before the incident.

jarawa: Crisis appears to be deepening within the ranks of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kogi State, ahead of the November 16 governorship election. The fresh crisis rocking the PDP is said to be a fallout of the party’s primary election, which saw the emergence of Musa Wada, an engineer, as the governorship flag-bearer for the November governorship election. Wada polled 748 votes to clinch the party’s ticket.
But the senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, and Abubakar Ibrahim, son of a former governor of the state, Ibrahim Idris, kicked against the emergence of Wada and consequently petitioned the National Working Committee of the party. Abubakar scored a total of 710 votes to emerge second while Senator Melaye scored 70 votes at a primary poll conducted in Lokoja on September 3.
Senator Melaye said he rejected the outcome of the primary election on the ground that all the votes cast in his favour were not counted before gunmen disrupted the exercise. Daily Trust on Sunday learnt that both Melaye and Abubakar Ibrahim submitted their petitions to the party’s appeal committee, but the issue was not resolved in their favour. Consequently, Melaye turned down the appointment given to him by the party to serve as its campaign director-general for the November 16 governorship election.
The senator, who made his position public via a tweet stated, “Let me state categorically that I have turned down the position of director-general of the PDP Kogi State Governorship Campaign Council. I wish the PDP all the best. When truth is a casualty, there is chaos. Melaye’s reaction indicates that the Kogi PDP is divided, less than two months to the governorship election in the state. On his part, Abubakar Ibrahim, who came second in the primary election, also questioned the emergence of Musa Wada as the party’s flag-bearer.
He argued that he would have won if the election did not end violently. Meanwhile, Abubakar Ibrahim has gone to court seeking to be declared the candidate of the party. The spokesman of the Abubakar Ibrahim Campaign Organisation, Shaba Ibrahim, who briefed reporters on the legal action filed at the state High Court in Lokoja, faulted the processes that produced Musa Wada as candidate of the party.
“As democratic and law-abiding people, we have taken steps to seek redress within the confines of the law. We have approached the court to seek redress and it is because this matter is not otherwise subjudiced; we will not go into further details. “But suffice it to state that we have won.
We pray the court to declare Alhaji Abubakar Ibrahim the candidate of the PDP based on the valid votes recorded at the primary election,” he said. This is just as a former acting governor of the state and chieftain of the PDP, Chief Clarence Olafemi, has threatened to dump the party for the All Progressives Congress (APC) over an alleged injustice meted to him by the party’s leadership.
Olafemi, who was the campaign director-general to Abubakar Ibrahim in the last primary election, said the party had “cheated” him on several occasions; hence he could no longer pitch his tent with them. He said his recent visit to Governor Yahaya Bello was because of impunity in the PDP. He said he was one of the strong members of the PDP in the state, yet the National Working Committee of the party failed to recognise his input and efforts.
“I was the running mate to Jubril Isah Echocho in the 2015 governorship primary election of the party, but we were later replaced and they brought in Captain Idris Wada and Yomi Awoniyi as his running mate without any reason. “In the 2019 general elections, I was one of the senatorial aspirants from Kogi West, but I was denied the party’s ticket while they imposed Senator Dino Melaye, who just decamped from the APC.
“My governorship aspirant in the just concluded primary of the party, Alhaji Abubakar Ibrahim Idris, was denied the ticket of the party by some powers to be in the party, who gave victory to Musa Wada because they hate Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, the former governor of the state. “With all these impunity, how do you expect me to continue staying in the PDP? I am not the first person to decamp from one party to another.
President Muhammadu Buhari, and my mentor, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku, all decamped from one party to another. I am not going to be the first or the last. “I had a fruitful discussion with Governor Yahaya Bello and I am very satisfied with the outcome of our meeting,’’ he said. Meanwhile, a former governor of the state, Idris Wada and 9 other aspirants have resolved to support the party’s governorship candidate, Musa Wada.
The former governorship aspirants, led by Idris Wada, on Friday, September 13, unanimously adopted Musa Wada and pledged to work for his victory at the poll. Speaking in Abuja, Mohammed Shaibu said the aspirants had reviewed the circumstances that led to Wada’s emergence and decided to close ranks and work with him for the total victory of the party at the poll.
He said: “As members of the Kogi PDP 2019 G12, the urgent need for intra-party cohesion and unity of purpose at this critical moment is recognised. It is for this reason that the candidacy of Engr. Musa Wada is considered worthy of undivided support as the task to rebuild Kogi starts in earnest.
“Considering the reconciliation efforts of Engr. Musa Wada and his preparedness to actively partner with the 2019 PDP aspirants in Kogi State, the Kogi PDP 2019 G-12, without reservation, accepts him as a partner in progress in the liberation struggle and also accepts to work with him in the overall interest of the PDP and Kogi State.” Political analysts have described the crisis rocking the PDP few months to the governorship election in Kogi as a bad signal. They maintained that if not speedily resolved, the crisis could affect the chances of the party in the forthcoming election negatively.
There are fears that some of the aggrieved party stalwarts could move to the APC to scuttle the chances of the PDP in the election. In the meantime, the party’s leadership is also not leaving things to chances as it has commenced some fence-mending moves. The chairman of the PDP in the state, Sam Uhuotu, an engineer, recently inaugurated a reconciliation committee, with the task to identify all aggrieved persons as much as possible, so as to pacify and reconcile with them.
The committee has a former deputy governor of the state, Patrick Adaba as chairman, Kabiru Usman, a lawyer, as vice chairman, while Henry Ojuola, a lawyer, is to serve as secretary. Other members of the committee are Dr Stephen Olorunfemi, Chief John Odawn, Olori Margaret Orebiyi, Princess Grace Iye Adejo, Chief Roberts Audu, Hon Chief Moses Ado Okino, Prof Olugbemiro Jegede, Hon (Dr) Musa Ahmadu and Hon JJ Idachaba.
As it stands, the outcome of the reconciliatory efforts will, to some extent, determine how the PDP would fare in the forthcoming election in Kogi.

doris00: Governors of seven states of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) met on Friday in Port Harcourt, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
According to Mr Simeon Nwakaudu, Special Assistant (Electronic Media) to Gov. Nyesom Wike, the meeting was attended by Govs. Umaru Fintiri (Adamawa), Emeka Ihedioha (Imo); Seyi Makinde (Oyo); Samuel Ortom (Benue); Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto); and Mohammed Mattawale (Zamfara).
After the meeting, Tambuwal explained that the governors were in Rivers to commend Wike “for his sustained projects delivery’’.
He said the governors urged him to continue to deliver quality projects and sustain good governance for the development of Rivers State.
Tambuwal also said that PDP remained strongly united in friendship and brotherhood.
He said: “We are here as brothers and friends to the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, in the spirit of brotherhood and friendship.
“We are here to encourage and support him for the good governance he has given to the good people of Rivers State.
“The 100 days of the second term of Governor Wike is also why we are here.

Amarachi1990: Rivers State House of Assembly has set up a three-man ad hoc committee to liaise with other government agencies to tackle the recurring serial killings of young women in hotels in the state.
Members of the committee included Kelechi Nworgu, member representing Omuma constituency (Chairman), Solomon Sokolo, representing Abua/Odua (member) and Michael Chinda, representing Obio/Akpor constituency (member).
At the end of debate, the House resolved to set up an ad hoc committee that would work with other government agencies to eradicate the menace from the state.
Speaker of the House, Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani, who announced constitution of the ad hoc committee, after going through the three prayers as contained in the motion, said: “We have heard that the police have arrested two suspects in this regard, meaning they are closing in on the criminals. The issue of security is so versed that the mere fact that we are debating this issue does not mean even as lawmakers, we have absolute knowledge.
“Knowledge is contributory, contribution from other agencies will also aid what we are doing here. It will give us further and better particulars for us to reach and form decision by way of resolution of the House.
“I think the resolution we are going to have now will be an interim resolution, so that we will take prayer one which is “condemning such act in strong terms,” which all members who spoke agreed on.
“The House has resolved that it is condemnable the act of serial killing, as recorded in the state and that an ad hoc committee be set up by the House.
“The committee should report back to the House on the next adjourned date because it is an issue we are not going to leave long. We have to follow it bumper to bumper, so that we will be able to keep the world or the public abreast with what is happening and make our position as an Assembly very clear because we represent the interest of all,” Ibani stated.
However, the incessant female killings led to the recent protest by hundreds of concerned women to the Rivers State House of Assembly, State Government House, Police Headquarters and office of the Department of State Security, in Port Harcourt.
During their protest, the women demanded a stop to the menace, seeking the agencies to step up action to the arrest of the serial killers.

What do garden snails eat?
Snails need carbohydrates for energy, and they also need protein for growth. In addition, snails require a large amount of calcium (Ca) deposits in their environment for their shells, as well as other minerals and vitamins.
1. Calcium Supplements Snails must have an abundant supply of calcium to build and repair their shells. Always keep a source of calcium close in the snail housing at all times. You can read different snail housing construction styles here. Calcium powder, cuttlebone, shells from dead snails, natural limestone, bone meal, and wood ash are good sources of calcium for snails.
2. Leaves and Vegetables Snails will eat the leaves of the following plants: Apple, broccoli, cocoyam, spinach, kola, cassava, onion greens, okra, eggplant, celery, parsley, loofah, turnip, mushroom, carrot, barley, chamomile, beans, cabbage, and paw-paw. Paw-paw leaves (as well as its fruit, flower, and fruit peels) stand out as essential food for snails.
3. Tuber Crops Cocoyam, cassava, yam, sweet potato and plantain. Tubers are a good source of carbohydrates, though low in protein. (Cassava must be of a very low cyanide content).
4. Fleshy Fruits Fruits are rich sources of minerals and vitamins but are low in protein. Fruits that form part of the essential food for snails include; Aubergine, Paw-paw, Green beans, artichoke, mango, banana, eggplant, apricot, pear, oil palm, fig, tomato, peach, orange, pumpkins, ripe cherries, watermelon, cucumbers (a favorite snail food).
5. Flowers Edible flowers for snails include; rose, cauliflower, hibiscus, paw-paw, and sunflower.
6. Non-Chlorinated Water Place a shallow dish filled with spring water for your snail to drink from, and bathe in. Replace the water every 1-2 days. Ensure you do not supply chlorinated water because chlorine is harmful to snails.
7. Other Essential Food for Snails Some household wastes like peels of fruit and tuber, banana, plantain, watermelon, damaged fruits, yam, and cooked foods like potato, rice, carrot, and beans. You must, however, be careful to avoid the household waste that contains salt. Note that raw food has a higher nutritional content than cooked or processed foods. In addition, specially formulated snail feed or meshed chicken feed can be fed to snails.

Another lady was reportedly murdered again in a hotel located at Rumuola, Port Harcourt on Sunday. And as usual, a white handkerchief was tied on the naked victim's legs, hands and neck.
The lifeless body of the yet to be identified lady was discovered on Monday Sept. 16 inside one of the rooms of the hotel. This is coming few days after another lady was found strangled to death at another hotel in the State.
One of the victims identified as Nikky Dora worked at the hotel. Her sister Nketa Esther Bright said she was killed alongside another staff while attending to some guys that booked a room at the lodging facility.
The Nigerian Police Force had claimed that prostitution is what got the victims to the hotel rooms and also what got them killed. But, a twitter user recently tweeted revealing the 'modus operandi' of the alleged serial killers on the lose in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital.
According to the Twitter user, the killers are ritualists who pose as potential customers to unsuspecting victims. She said most of their victims (all females) are online vendors who are usually lured to the hotels to deliver "pay on delivery" wares.
She also claimed that the killers usually use a lady to communicate with the "vendors", making it look really unsuspicious.
She said such "vendors", upon arrival at the hotels, are lured to the rooms by the female posing as customer, with flimsy excuse of being too lazy to walk, or not dressed up.
When asked by her followers how she managed to gather such information, she claimed a friend who was lucky not to have fallen victim, shared the story.
According to the story, the lady overheard a male voice at the background of the telephone conversation with her suppose female buyer.
She claimed her friend heard a male voice whispering to her suppose customer 'tell her to come to the room', which made her to quickly exit the premises.
This year alone, more than 8 ladies have been murdered in hotels and in similar manner, prompting people to believe a serial killer is on the prowl in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital.
