It's a fact that there is a disconnect between African American's and African Immigrants living in America. There have always been misunderstanding and tension between these two groups. One group accusing the other of stereotyping and bigotry, and each group being in its own bubble.

Although some attempts have been made by African American scholars to study Africa and Africans, it's been mainly about ancient history. Not much attempt has been made to study contemporary Africa and African cultures and traditions.

And so there has been all kinds of stereotypes and false assumptions of who Africans truly are, and the mainstream media is doing an excellent job in keeping these false narratives alive through their reporting of distorted stories.

In a recent interview, Dr Hakeem Jackson, a scholar of African Studies brought to light the work of Jamal Toure, the author of the book: The African American's Guide to Understanding the African Immigrant, and how Jamal made a bold attempt to document the way of life of African immigrants living in America.

Dr Jackson revealed that the author did a great job in describing virtually every aspect of an African immigrant's way of life; from family life, education, to relationship with African Americans(or other races). There were clear explanations on common stereotypes about both groups (African American and African immigrants), and which ones are true or false.

The author made a conscious effort to be impartial in his depiction of some hidden negative thoughts African immigrants have about African Americans. The book describes the African immigrant's journey from Africa, his positive impressions about African Americans, and how those thoughts change after living in America for a while, the orientation he/she recieves from older immgrants and personal experiences from interacting with African Americans.

After reading this book, I make bold to say that the author did a fantastic job in documenting the personality of an African immigrant in America. It's obvious that he had no hidden agenda other than to present the facts as they are. I feel that's probably due to the author having an Ethiopian wife, and so he has a better knowledge of the African immigrant's experiences in America.

The book may stir up some emotions (positive or negative) in some readers, but for an open minded reader, it will greatly educate and reorientate you on who an African immgrant truly is and his/her perculiar relationship with African Americans.

It is my opinion that anyone interested in improving race relations or multiculturalism, should read this very educative book.
