Politics60 Boko Haram Members Killed In Maiduguri. by Chimerase(op): 1:31pm On Jun 14, 2013
*the Civilian JTF are arresting more members of Boko Haram living in their neighbourhood to the soldiers.

No fewer than 60 corpses of suspected Boko Haram terrorists were said to have been deposited on Monday at the state specialist hospital in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

It was also gathered that the terrorists were arrested and handed over to the military by youths alleged to have been engaged by government and trained by foremost hunter, Ali Quara, who specialises in hunting robbers and notorious criminals.

Some groups of youths declared hunting extravaganza on Boko Haram terrorists and other criminals to clean the state, after several months of blood-letting by the sect.

One of the directors charged with the responsibility of evacuating corpses, who did not want his name in print, told newsmen on Tuesday in Maiduguri that the youth, who are now referred as “Civilian JTF” in Maiduguri, had been making tremendous effort at hunting and catching members of the dreaded sect, who seemed to have defied all effort to be arrested by security officials.
He said, “if you observe now, the security personnel are not oppressing the people as they are doing in the past. Now it is the civilian JTF who knows these Boko Haram boys that go about identifying, arresting and hands them over for justice.”

According to him, “with this new arrangement, Borno would soon be cleansed of these bad elements and the peace we are all praying for is at our doorsteps,” adding that “what we need to do is to continue to pray for victory for these youths that have voluntarily contributed by putting their lives on the line for the sake of millions of Borno citizens who were being killed by Boko Haram terrorists.”

He said “this is what the state should have done long ago to prevent the killings of many innocent citizens, but everything has its own time. We did not know that one day, some youths would come up, bundle a Boko Haram member and hand such over to the military. That was impossible in the past but now it is the Boko Haram who are seeking hiding places.”

PoliticsWhat We Saw In Boko Haram Camps by Chimerase(op): 1:38pm On Jun 13, 2013
Driving through the dusty road that led to Sambisa forest where the infamous Boko Haram terrorist group pitched some of their camps was one hell of a bumpy ride into a thickset of arid forests that characterize the savannah region.
Bumpy, jarring and dangerous as the bush paths were, the tour of the sacked camps provided anyone with the trained eye of a reporter, a great deal of insight on the true colour and character of the so-called Islamic Jihadists.
The Sambisa forest, which they turned into a recruiting ground and operational base is a vast expanse of nature, which was designated ‘Games Reserve’ by government. The intention was to keep, protect and preserve our priced species of wild animals and other elements of nature in their natural habitat. As it has turned out, the Games Reserve now seemed to have been reserved for a band of misguided blood-thirsty fiends who slip in and out of the belly of the forest to wreak havoc in the northern part of Nigeria.

Without doubt, Boko Haram’s violent campaign in Nigeria since its emergence has carved out a bloody trajectory, etching its gory sense of agitation in our wounded hearts and leaving the rest of humanity outraged. What manner of shocking violence has the Boko Haram group not visited on Nigerians since their violent campaigns? From bombing innocent worshippers in the sanctuary of their churches and mosques to beheading of defenceless citizens, kidnapping women and children and detonating Improvised Explosive Devices(IEDs) in workplaces; name it, they have carried it out in Nigeria. Their campaign of violence has so far claimed over 3000 innocent lives yet they are baying for more blood of fellow Nigerians!
Known for their defiant posture and grim determination to hold on to actualize their nihilist agenda, the terrorist group stepped up its intransigence by actually sacking institutions of government in a number of communities in Borno state. The so-called Jihadists, who claim to be fighting on behalf of Islam, took over communities and forcibly conscripted young men into their fighting force and made women - their sex slaves! They violated Nigeria’s sovereignty, burnt her flag and hoisted theirs, strutting around those hapless communities like an all-conquering force. That was before their nemesis arrived.
On proclamation of state of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States by the President and Commander-in-Chief, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, the Special Forces of the Nigerian military moved in and dislodged the devils from their camps; the troops are currently ‘sweeping the forest clean’.
As our escort vehicles meandered through the forest path to reach the sacked camps, the gory sight and eerie feeling that now characterize the desecrated grove was inescapable. The first thing that assaulted our sensibilities was the sight of charred vehicles, refrigerators, sewing machines, coolers and such other items, which were apparently stolen by the terrorists. We were told that as the terrorists retreated, they destroyed any item they could not run with.
Then we saw fresh shallow graves of gang members who were summarily executed by their kingpins. We stumbled severally on strange stuff, which bespoke the true colour and character of our so-called Jihadists. In almost all the camps we visited, we saw countless number of syringes, hand gloves and test tubes obviously for administering narcotic drugs; also scattered in their camps were used and unused condoms! In fact one of my colleagues couldn’t help asking no one in particular, “…so these devils are even afraid of venereal disease?”
From the accounts of their victims that were rescued by troops, the insurgents repeatedly raped women they abducted from various communities. According to one of the rescued children, “the terrorists are always injecting themselves with something after which they will be behaving abnormally as if they are in a trance”. It is certainly not surprising to learn that the insurgents engage in substance abuse to put them in the right state to perpetrate the atrocious crimes they carry out against innocent Nigerians. Indeed, what could be deadlier than the combination of drug intoxication and evil indoctrination?
It was also gathered that whilst the kingpins of the evil association live a life of luxury in the camps, their foot soldiers endure subservient condition with instant death awaiting any dissenting voice or suspected mole among the zombie-like subordinates.
Tucked away, therefore, from the prying eyes of frightened locals and outraged country, the Sambisa forest and other camps hitherto provided this deranged group a sanctuary where they met their various kinds of weird fantasies, all in the name of fighting for the Islamisation of Nigeria.

PoliticsProscribing Boko Haram, Ansaru Wrong, Says ACN by Chimerase(op): 5:47am On Jun 10, 2013
Action Congress of Ni-geria, ACN, has said that the recent proscription order against Boko Haram and Ansaru, desirable as it may be in tackling the terrorist organisations, violates the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by stifling the press and tampering with the fundamental human rights of Nigerians.

A statement in Ila-Orangun, yesterday, by ACN’s National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the order also makes it easy for an increasingly intolerant government to clamp down on the opposition, which its sees more as an irritant .

In the alternative, ACN called on the Federal Government to clarify the knotty and vague areas of the open-ended order, that may end up punishing journalists and infringing on the civil liberties of the citizens more than it will curtail activities of the sects.

The party said: ‘’Against the background of insinuations in government circles, let us be clear that we do not condone the activities of these sects that have killed and maimed innocent Nigerians and turned a section of the country into a battle field.

“Terrorism in all its ramifications is condemnable, and no responsible government will allow any group, no matter its name, grievances or ideology, to carry out terrorist acts unchecked.

“But we believe that whatever action government takes— even in an emergency— must pass the constitutional test, especially since the relevant sections of the Constitution have not been suspended.”

It said the offensive section of the order is Section 5 (1), which prescribes a term of imprisonment of not less than 20 years ‘’for any person who knowingly, in any manner, directly or indirectly, solicits or renders support for the commission of an act of terrorism or to a terrorist group.”

ACN said “support,” as defined by the order, includes “incitement to commit a terrorist act through the Internet, or any electronic means or through the use of printed materials or through the dissemination of terrorist information.

“Is this subsection not in conflict with Chapter II Section 22 of the Nigeria Constitution which says ‘The press, radio, television and other agencies of the mass media, shall at all times be free to uphold the fundamental objectives contained in this chapter and uphold the responsibility and accountability of the government to the people?’

“By stifling the press, is the order not abridging a part of the fundamental human rights guaranteed every citizen under Chapter Four of the Nigerian Constitution in Section 39 (1), which states thus: ‘Every person shall be entitled to freedom of expression including freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart ideas and information without interference?’”

ACN said the Nigerian government must take a cue from what obtains in other countries, especially in the USA, which are also battling terrorism, adding that the media in those countries have continued to report freely on activities of the global terrorist organisation, Al-Qaeda, despite the horrendous attacks it has carried out in the US and Europe, among others.

PoliticsBomb Blast Averted In Kaduna by Chimerase(op): 1:07am On Jun 08, 2013
BARELY 24 hours after the meeting of the Nigeria Northern Governors Forum in Kaduna, what could have been a bloody explosion was averted in the state Friday when men of the anti-bomb squad of the state Police Command successfully detonated a bomb in the metropolis.

Besides, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olufemi Adenaike, said the bomb was concealed in a new computer set inside a carton meant to attract attention.

He explained that the bomb was discovered along Cameroun Road, close to Junction Road, a heavily populated area, but was successfully detonated without any casualty.

An eyewitness, Mallam Nasiru Suleiman, told The Guardian that the incident occurred around 4pm and led people at different directions for their lives.

The incident resulted to a heavy traffic jam along the popular Junction Road, with armed policemen and soldiers taking over the roads leading to the spot, while also denying motorists access to the roads, as traffic was diverted through Independence Way leading to Constitution Road.

As at the time of filing in this report, the whole vicinity was still cordoned off by men of Nigerian Army, the Police and Nigeria Civil Defence and Security Corps.

PoliticsThisday Newspapers Office Was Bombed To Appease Allah - Witness Tells Court. by Chimerase(op): 9:06pm On Jun 05, 2013
**the Suicide Bomber who was rescued from his Burning car, cried bitterly on why he was denied the opportunity of inheriting 72 virgins in heaven.
**our action was to avenge the insult meted out on Allah by the media outlet which he said did not deserve to exist.

The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, yesterday, heard how alleged kingpin of the Boko Haram sect, Mustapher Umar, bombed office of Thisday Newspaper in Kaduna State with 12 camp gas cylinders in a bid to appease Allah.

Justice Ademola Adeniyi, who admitted a burnt Honda Car, with number-plate AL-306-MKA, allegedly used to perpetrate the terrorist act on April 26, 2012, further heard how the accused person cried bitterly when he was rescued from the burning car, saying they denied him the opportunity of inheriting 72 virgins in heaven.

In a bid to prove the complicity of the accused person, the Federal Government brought a senior police officer that is charged with the responsibility of keeping exhibits recovered from terror suspects to testify before the high court.

The masked witness, PW-8, who told the court that the accused person had intended to carry out a suicide attack, produced the burnt Honda car, the discharged cylinders, half-charred 25 litter jerry-can that allegedly contained fuel, and persuaded Justice Adeniyi to move the court outside to inspect the terror items.
Besides, he showed the trial judges who was accompanied on the inspection tour by lawyers and journalists, the foot wear the accused person discarded in his attempt to escape after he was caught by angry mob within the premises of SOJ Plaza in Kaduna State where the attack occurred.

Aside Thisday, two other media houses affected by the explosion which reportedly led to the death of about 10 persons, were the Moment and Sun Newspapers, which offices were equally situated at the said SOJ plaza.

Convinced that the items brought to court were worth taking into cognisance in determining the culpability of the accused to the one-count terrorism charge preferred against him by the government, Justice Ademola admitted them into evidence.
While he entered the cylinders as exhibits MU 7-18, Justice Adeniyi marked the charred can as exhibit MU-19; the burnt Honda car was admitted as exhibit MU-20.

Besides, the federal government, through the police, persuaded the court to watch a video clip where the accused person confessed that he was sent to bomb Thisday Newspaper, owing to a report he said did not only put Islam in false light, but greatly insulted Prophet Mohammed.

The accused person in the video, said his action was to avenge the insult meted out on “Allah” by the media outlet which he said did not deserve to exist.

The accused, who spoke in Hausa language, said he knew those that also bombed the Abuja office of Thisday Newspaper, saying the attack was equally as a result of the “sins” the media house committed against Islam. - Vanguard.

PoliticsWhy We Placed Rewards On Terrorists by Chimerase(op): 8:34pm On Jun 05, 2013
American groups, others laud move

• Govt formally proscribes Boko Haram, Ansaru

• Minister, service chiefs brief Senate on emergency rule

THE United States (U.S.) Tuesday explained its move to offer $23 million reward to help track down five leaders of militant groups accused of spreading terror in West Africa, with the highest sum of $7 million placed on Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau.

Shekau last week called on Islamists in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq to join the bloody fight to create an Islamic state in Nigeria.

The Acting Assistant Director of Diplomatic Security’s Threat Investigations Analysis Directorate, U.S. Department of State, Kurt Rice, said the rewards were to ensure the availability of useful information on the location of the terror gangs’ leaders, which would in turn allow the citizens to live peacefully.

His explanation came as some U.S.-based groups also commended the move, having been campaigning for tougher policies against the Islamist terrorist organisation, including the outright designation of Boko Haram as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO.

Interestingly, President Goodluck Jonathan Tuesday formally proscribed the two major Islamist terrorist organisations in the country, Boko Haram and Ansaru, and authorised the gazetting of an order declaring their activities illegal and acts of terrorism.

Jonathan’s order, which has been gazetted as the Terrorism (Prevention) Proscription Order Notice 2013 affects both Boko Haram (Jamaatu Ahlis-Sunna Liddaawati Wal Jihad) and another group, Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina Fi Biladis Sudan, pursuant to Section 2 of the Terrorism Prevention Act 2011 (As Amended).

A statement last night by the Special Adviser (Media and Publicity) to the President, Dr. Reuben Abati, said the new law officially brings the activities of both groups within the purview of the Terrorism Prevention Act and any person associated with them could now be legally prosecuted and sentenced to penalties specified in the Act.

Moreover, the Minister of State for Defence, Olusola Obada, and other service chiefs were at the Senate yesterday to give situation report on the state of emergency declared last month in Adamawa, Yobe and Borno states.

Obada, who came with only the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Admiral Ola Sa’ad Ibrahim, as the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) and Chief of Army Staff (CAS) were on other national assignments, told lawmakers that anything that would bring about disunity in the country would be strictly resisted.

Responding, the Chairman, Senate Joint Committee on Defence and Army, National Security and Intelligence, Navy, Air Force and the Police, George Thompson Sekib, said the committee was mandated to monitor the progress of the emergency rule and report back at regular basis. Noting that it was a monthly briefing, Sekib said the committee would study the report.

Rice spoke yesterday during a teleconference on new U.S. counter-terrorists initiative for West African nations. Beside the $7 million on Shekau, he said, “what we are looking for is fruitful information that will lead to the location of AQIM leader, Yahya Abou Al-Hammam, and the current leader, Oumar Ould Hamaha.

“We are trying to work with Nigeria to ensure that their environments are free from terrorists throw-out for the first time. The reward is to ensure people can give us information that will lead to the apprehension of these leaders of terrorists.”

He added: “Anyone with useful information that could lead to the arrest of these terrorists can visit our website www.rewards4justice.com or frg@washington.org, or the person can visit the U.S. consulate.”

On their part, America-based Christian Association of Nigerian-Americans (CANAN) said the bounty on the terrorists was an encouraging development. CANAN President, Dr. James Fadele, said yesterday: “We want to commend the new U.S. Secretary of State, Senator John Kerry, for this decision in the hope that this move is an indication of greater forthrightness in dealing with the bane of terrorism in Nigeria and the West African sub-region.

“Boko Haram is a band of brutal terrorists who should be dealt with seriously, promptly and effectively to preserve the peace and stability of the West African sub-region and secure the freedom of worship of Nigerian Christians.”

Similarly, Jubilee Campaign, a Washington DC-based advocacy group formed by leading Americans concerned with religious freedom, also commended the decision.

Its executive director, Ann Buwalda, said in a statement yesterday: “Jubilee Campaign commends this offer of a reward by the U.S. Department of States for information leading to the capture of Shekau, a brutal terrorist responsible for the systematic effort to eradicate Christians from the north of Nigeria as well as impose Sharia law throughout the country of Nigeria.

“Our data shows that Boko Haram attacks more Christians than any other targeted group. Between 2010 and 2013, Boko Haram initiated attacks against Christians 297 times, and in 2012 killed 1,726 people and injured 613 more.

For U.S.-based religious freedom advocate, Emma Ogebe, “the decision by the U.S. to name a reward for the capture of Boko Haram’s leader is no doubt an indication of the strong pressure on the Obama administration to rethink its policy in the wake of the unrelenting genocide unleashed by the terrorists.”

Ogebe added: “The argument that Boko Haram is about northern poverty when the terrorists are using RPGs and anti-aircraft missiles is no longer tenable and makes a mockery of the U.S. government.”

Nevertheless, most of the groups are insisting that the U.S. goes all the way to designate the group an FTO, as Fadele disclosed, “we are hopeful that the U.S. will continue to do the right thing going forward regarding Boko Haram - and that is to actually call this band of terrorists what they in fact are: a foreign terrorist organisation.”

Ogebe shares his opinion, stating that while the bounty is a step in the right direction, the designation of the Islamist sect as a foreign terrorist organisation would have been the decent thing to do.

Nevertheless, former military Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, has urged Boko Haram to lay down their arms and embrace dialogue as means of resolving their grievances with the country.

Abubakar spoke yesterday while receiving the Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Peaceful Resolution of Security Challenges in the North during a courtesy call at his residence in Minna.

A statement by the committee’s secretary, Esther Gonda, said that Abubakar pleaded with the group to take the opportunity of dialogue offered by government to end the suffering of people caught up in the conflict.

Abubakar, however, warned the government against retribution in the event that the group accepts to dialogue.

He expressed hope that with the committee, peace would return to the zone, as its members comprised people of impeccable character. He traced the crisis in the North to high level abject poverty occasioned by poor infrastructure, and advised government to address issues of electricity while strengthening the security agencies in the country.
