Like it or not,

The Universe is always cooking up something.

It's just that we don't understand what the signs are when the Universe does its thing.

Many times it can occur in conflict.

Then, as humans, we now follow the conflict and ignore the signs!

I used to be like this.

"Used to" is the key element of the last sentence.

Then recently, one morning, in my meditations (yes, I meditate but not in the way you think) I understood one truth: all my fighting back has been for nothing.

There is always something about conflict.

It either makes you or it mars you.

I realized that conflict is the tool of the Universe to bring those who will lift you and separate you from those who will ultimately destroy you.

Just like many of the Andrews who have left their Country.

Like it or not, Veno Marioghae was a genius.

Her song "Nigeria go survive" has its place in history.

Some people have used my craft (yes this craft) to just show everybody how small-minded they are.

They are the "Andrews" that Veno Marioghae was talking about.

Now, I am not against people leaving Nigeria (not at all).

I am against the unpatriotic ones.

The ones who see nothing good that will come out of this great Country.

Regardless of her problems, Nigeria still has the potential to become heaven on earth.

It is a space less than the size of the state of Texas in the United States.

Yet 200 million people stay there.

Most are living happy lives.

For my craft, this means that there is so much potential in the copywriting industry that we haven't yet started scratching the surface.

There's too much money to be made in Nigeria.

It is something that Andrew hates.

He finds ways to leave that beautiful combination of diverse people, places, and cultures behind because his balls are too small to take on the challenge of winning in the arena.

But some of us have titanium Cojones.

We are the legendary Toreros who always win, regardless.

Even when we are away, we will find ways to make Nigeria shine.

But not the cowardly Andrew.

He sees problems.

We see opportunities.

He uses people and dumps them.

We find ways to make people grow.

He finds ways to profit monetarily from everything.

Sometimes we plant seeds in the future and WAIT for them to grow.

Early last year, I was leaving the project office of an ad-hoc political project that I was linked with.

On my way home, a Fulani woman who sells Fura da Nono(Dried millet meal and local cows milk) called out to me in Hausa. "Yaro na, ka siya Fura na mana!" (My son buy my fura!). Ga fura. Fura mai dadi, nono mai kyau babu sami. Haba yaro siya mana! (See fura. Sweet fura with good Nono that isn't sour. My Son buy it now).

Of course, from her statements, anyone can tell that we know each other well. I was her regular customer for many years.

I smiled and replied to her in Hausa: "Mama, ki yi hakuri, ban da kudi yau. Watakila in Allah ya yarda zan siya furan gobe". ( Mama, don't be offended. If God wills it I will buy Fura tomorrow).

She replied to me in Hausa: " Haba yaro na!Ka siya, ka sha!Ko na marmari! Na san wei za ka iya! (My son, buy and drink it! Even if its just to satisfy your appetite! I know that you can do that!). Hearing this, I had no choice but to spend the last five hundred naira on me and I bought from her.

This story brings out several lessons for those who want to make sales.

This Fulani woman has way more intelligence when it comes to making sales than most educated people.

Firsty, I am a repeat customer. The familiar bond between us reduced the need for her to market her Fura and Nono.

Secondly, she roleplayed. The initiation of a mother-son conversation on her part was not a trick. It was a brilliant effort for her to get her customer to buy even though he didn't have much on him.

Thirdly, she appealed to my ego. That part of every human being that says" I am someone! I am important! I matter!".

I don't mean this in an arrogant way. I mean it in an empathetic way. She got to me via motherly instinct. And she made the sale!

Our fellow Nigerians who have entered the Nigerian direct response space do otherwise.

They dominate our collective imagination with the big figures and big ticket names.

This is fine. Don't get me wrong. A good name in branding works wonders. What I don't seem to get is why they need to exert themselves in their use of language.

Everything these people say is aggressive. They overuse sexualized terms. And the other thing that gets to me is the high-ticket nature of their products.

Their reasoning is that if you can't afford it then they don't care.

Guess what? I care both about the big guy and the little guy as well. It is why I know that Nigeria's best-selling product (Maggi cube) has had fantastic copywriters from day one.

It is also why I write these posts from time-to-time.

Don't get me wrong. I love high ticket sales. However, I love continuity more.

There is a saying in Hausa that says: " Ana wanke tukunya domin gobe" ( The pot is washed because of tomorrow).

My friends in the direct response industry in Nigeria don't wash their pots for tomorrow.

It is quite evident because they don't deliver value for free and then make the sale after for the real stuff.

If you have read through to this point, you have seen one or to things that you can take away and use.

Then tell your story right!

Most copywriters, marketers, and salespeople won't tell you this or would charge a fee for this because they want to show you how good they are.


They forget one thing about the marketing game and life: The best things in life are free!

Once this spiritual truth sinks in, you will discover that abundance is a state of being rather than a function of having.

Copywriting is not 419!

We are bound by a code of ethics!

Don't be deceived by the people who charge enormous fees simply because their message isn't evergreen.

If your product works you should be able to do sell without fear.

Direct response writing (that is what is called) is a core part of Copywriting.

It is not the only thing that Copywriting entails.

Have you noticed how these guys get up and think that this thing will make you money just like that?

They tell you of million naira paydays without telling you how to get there.

They want worship and adoration.

Just like many of the Nigerians in positions of leadership.

Here is the kicker.

You pay so much money because you believe in money.

You have to give value FIRST then charge. Let me give you two examples.
