You probably weren't born by then. So you won't know that that same military of 31 years ago is 100 times better than your modern day military including the rest of Africa. Teach yourself and stop ranting like a senseless parrot.

zaandrew: How do you know how the northerners feel. The place is under a news black out. And if they had no support they would have died out long ago.

Do you even know what happened to the tamil tiggers? They where a rebel group who tried to fight like a state army and got wipped out in field battels by the army.
what kind of question are you asking me about my own country again. So you've suddenly become an expert on Nigeria overnight from your kitchen thousands of miles away than myself that lives and moves around the country ? Suit yourself then. I won't be blamed for your ignorance.

And I'm telling you boko haram will not try it even if they have 20 tanks.

You have confused Nigerian military for Malians.
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by chris365(m):
zaandrew: Once BH fights Nigeria in field battels it means one of 2 things. 1 nigeria is entering a full blown civil war or BH will go the way of the tamil tigers.
Did you type with sleepy eyes or it's just your ignorant self talking? Full blown civil war? Tamil tigers? Do you even know what you are talking about?

The Tamil tigers died the moment went into open battle with Sri Lanka. Boko haram can never get that kind of idea in a life time. They know it.

Almost all northerners despise bono haram so how will that kind of insurgency lead to a civil war when their troubled communities are already fighting alongside the army?

Please try to enlighten yourself before you continue talking like a drunk.

The Nigerian fighters in boko haram have almost been eradicated so they result to bringing foreign terrorists to fight for them.

the chance boko haram had to spark a civil or religious war was when they were bombing churches and assassinating Christians and pastors to spark reprisals. When they swa that it didn't work they went on to killing their fellow muslims for the same purpose.

now because they are doing some sneak attacks from bushes and desert you want to assume that is enough to start a civil war? No wonder you are regarded as a chef grin

The only scenario you can compare with ours is Algeria.

Eff are you talking about civil war? Take your pills abeg

DictatorZAR: So I can derive from your statement that most of your recent postings from the punch should also be regarded as sensationalist.

That remains only speculation but judging by your armies spin doctors some truths will be hidden from public
I never post from punch. I used to be an hardcore reader back in the days so I know how badly they have changed. Like I said, they are still better than Sahara reporters cos aside from politics and security issues, they still have some nice articles you can enjoy.

The army has Been doing badly with their PR ever since. They hide everything from the public. Thats how secretive they are.

But I will continue to tell you that they have succeded in liberating all boko haram strongholds especially in maiduguri. My job enables me to travel, so I know this myself.

There was a CCTV exclusive on "the journey to maiduguri" they showed on Africa live program some few weeks back.

If you had seen it or maybe you can look for it, you'll see for yourself.

There's no doubt the military failed to prevent this attack, buts it doesn't mean boko haram is winning. There's a difference.

Notice reports saying they were trying to run back to the desert where they'be been hiding.

Simply put.. punch is an apposition media. But somehow better than saharareporters cos aside from their false sensational news, they have some columnists with nice side topics like health and stuff.

they used to be cool until they became a political tool. Now most of their news are derived from rumor mongering.

Like the story in this report has only one percent truth which can be derived from everyone's suspicion that the attack was aided by an insider.

zaandrew: BH seems to be getting bolder and stronger with each attack. How long till nigeria becomes a syria.
Lord knows I'm not going to defend the military on this recent attack. It was a kind of setback that will overshadow their successes so far in this fight.

But you need to remember that maiduguri was the stronghold of boko haram before the SOE, the former jtf base was unsuccessfuly attacked by then. Even boko haram have already learnt that attacking an army base would be a suicide mission.

During the emergency rule, the state has enjoyed some level of peace since the military was deployed. And boko haram have been pushed to operating from the forest and desert which still remains uncomfortable for them.

All these were successful with help from the airforce. (upon it's limited resources). So it had to be a target. An assault the airforce FAILED to repel.

I'm not defending the military for this failure, but I just wanna let you know the reality on ground.

just cause they attacked the base does not mean they have the upper hand or they are winning. It was just a result of intelligence failure.

they did worse than this before the SOE so they've always been daring. It gradually became rare so any recent attack would seem new.

Syrian situation is different and you of all people should know better

Obrafour: Well history has a cruel way of repeating itself. In early 1984, the PNDC government complained that Ivory Coast was allowing Ghanaian dissidents to use its territory as a base from which to carry out acts of sabotage against Ghana. Ghana also accused Ivory Coast of granting asylum to political agitators wanted for crimes in Ghana. The governing party in Ghana today was borne out of the PNDC. read more In 2010, Ivory
Coast petitioned the United Nations
to complete the demarcation of the Ivorian maritime boundary with Ghana. This occurred just days after the American exploration firm Vanco discovered oil in the Dzata-1 deepwater-well. The issue
attracted considerable media attention,
and some Ghanaian press sources
claimed that the petition was an
attempted oil grab by Ivory Coast
. This is Bakassi beign played all over again. I fear a full scale war soon because the Ghanaian government is not going to budge.
War? Ghana is not an aggressor na. So I doubt it will lead to that. I'm just a little skeptical about my opinion cos France fights for it's interest and not it's colony.

Ghana will do well to start arming up cos France wants a piece of that oil and will use ivory coast as a front like they did in bakassi.

Thiza: @rka1 WELL THOUGHTOUT RESPONSE WHEN NIGERIA IS AT THE RECEIVING END BUT WHEN SOUTH AFRICA FACED THE SAME SITUATION IN CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC ALL SORTS OF INSULTS WERE TRADE BY YOUR KIND.
CAR situation is different from this. your base was overran and many of your troops slaughtered. SA had every justification to react but didn't.

instead you pulled out completely after scrambling jets and helos.

boko haram does not have any territorial claims in Nigeria. mot even a village. they have been pushed to operate from the desert and neighboring cameroon

they are a home based group that mix with civilians so fighting them is more difficult than fighting a foreign rebellion which you ran away from cos you have to be mindful of collateral damages that will earn them more support.

you lost completely In CAR when seleka dared you and you turned the other cheek.

despite some slip ups, Nigerian military still has the upper hand and all territories in this war. so you tell the difference yourself

Henry120: The terrorists are still there in mali. Didn't you see the aljazeera report a month ago on the azawad rebellion in the north of mali?
actually, MNLA are not a terrorist movement and they seem to be fighting for something different from an al-Qaeda ideology. that's why they fell out with other groups affiliated with al-Qaeda.
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by chris365(m): 2:04pm On Dec 03, 2013
Henry120: Terrorism cannot be defeated, it can only be contained. The death of shekau at the hands of the army doesn't spell the end of terrorism. The turks also captured the head of the PKK in 1994 in tanzania, however, that did not end the insurgency in turkey.

The russians have been battling terrorism since 1994 in degastan and chechnya in the south of russia. It shows you the gravity of the problem we are facing. Islamic Terrorism is ideologically based. how do you defeat a person who believes that he is fighting for GOD, and you an enemy of God? It isn't possible to win such a fight.

Indonesia, turkey and russia all have militaries that are incomparable in the african continent, yet each of those nations continue to battle terrorism for over a decade.

Foreign assistance is massively required, if indonesia which has a Trillion dollar economy can accept foreign assistance from the US in funding, training and equipment( read about detachment 88), I don't see why nigeria at (400 billion usd) should refuse it. I'm pretty certain we receive help from the US and Israel in one form or the other, however no were near the scale of indonesia.

In dealing with any insurgency, everything boils down to effective equipment to prosecute your missions. Not just in planes and and MRAPs that have been mentioned many times, but in effective intelligence gathering tools. Equipments which by no means come cheap. That's is why I believe the furore generated over the elbit systems purchase by the government, championed by ignorant sahara reporters and premiumtimes have shown that those two online sources are nothing but slavish political tools.

Foreign assistance from the US, Israel is welcome, but the government has to ramp up our numbers in badly needed air assets and COIN based equipments. I don't see what chad, cameroun and niger can do to help us. It is left to the top brass and the government, especially madam prime-minister to release much needed funds to help our military effectively tackle this problem. The SUPER TUCANOS should come as fast as they can. We badly need them.
true talk but you and i know the US and britain like to play lip service when it comes to helping Nigeria militarily with their excuse of possible human rights violation.

and i strongly agree with you that that stingy harvard woman doesn't understand that economic grouth comes with improved security. wasn't she the one that clamoured for military expenses to be cut. upon the small one wey dem dey manage.

I just tire for that woman and our defence policy makers.

Fighter Pilot: Chief, you will never defeat Boko Haram, unless you swallow your pride and seek a foreign help, but that will not come easy because they might force you to negotiate.
this is the problem with dumb Africans. what has the foreign help done for Afghanistan. you believe in foreigners so much that you doubt your own abilities.

the only foreign help Nigeria needs is for Cameroon to shut it's boarders the way chad and Niger did. then you'll see the results.

despite the few slip ups, Nigerian military is very capable of handling this fight. what makes you think boko haram had to bring foreigners to fight for them if their Nigerian counterparts are still remaining?
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by chris365(m): 1:41pm On Dec 03, 2013
Obrafour: This thing has France all over it. They plan to do to Ghana what they did to Nigeria regarding the Bakassi Peninsular. I see a war between These two countries.
I had the same discussion with afriend just this morning. Ghana needs to be really careful cos the country is gradually becoming an extented battlefield between pro and anti gbagbo militias. and France as usual is at the epicenter.
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by chris365(m): 3:39pm On Dec 02, 2013
Fighter Pilot: Eish!! Boko Haram, the president must just negotiate, nothing else. Really.
Nope. Negotiation is off the table as they are being cornered. These kind of attacks are bound to happen every once in a while. What you should consider is the casualty figure and who still retains territory.

The airforce is not like the army that is well trained in ground battles. But their ability to repel such attack and counter it is a sign of their strength.

Boko haram now brings in terrorists from Algeria, Mali, chad, Niger and Cameroon.

So who is the government supposed to negotiate with?

The only problem we have in this fight is Cameroon. They continue to give boko haram safe haven out of fear. And the time will come when they will regret it.

Actually I saw it. All victory on the Nigerian side. And the bold defeat of south Africa by seleka grin. what America did was to insist the aircraft are locally assembled here in the U.S.A at Jacksonville city assembly plant and it is being done now, all 20 Super Tucano's will be delivered to USAF in 6 months time, by June 2014.

Nigeria has made a very wise choice again as a mature and experienced nation with smart decision making in weapons purchase after we learnt our lessons in the 1990s.

now I get it. but I doubt Nigeria will want to assemble the jets locally due to it's urgent need. but word has it that we will get a good deal of technology transfer for local maintenance. so that we won't make the kind of mistakes most African countries make with such purchase.

Nigeria military says bombed Boko Haram camps

Maiduguri — Air strikes on Boko Haram camps in northeast Nigeria have killed "many" insurgents, the military said Thursday of latest operation aimed at crushing the four-year Islamist uprising.

The bombardment last Sunday targeted the notorious Sambisa Forest area of Borno state, which is considered an extremist fiefdom and has become a key focus of the military's ongoing offensive.

News of the assault was slow to emerge as the mobile phone network in Borno remains switched off, part of the military strategy to hamper communication between the militants.

"Our men have identified and destroyed some camps of terrorists along the Sambisa area and the operation was a huge success," area army spokesman Mohammed Dole told journalists in Borno's capital Maiduguri.

"I cannot tell you the exact number of the terrorists killed but... many of them have been killed during the airstrike which we strongly believe was precise," he added.

A military source who requested anonymity told AFP that dozens of militants were likely to have been killed in the attack.

Sambisa area resident Bintu James, who spoke to reporters in Maiduguri, said "the airstrike started at night and raged on until Monday morning".

Nigeria's military has claimed a string of recent successes against Boko Haram in the northeast, the group's historic stronghold.

The government earlier this month extended the state of emergency in the area that was first imposed in May, giving the military added powers for six additional months to flush out or kill the rebel fighters.

Boko Haram launched its uprising against the Nigerian state in 2009 and has carried out attacks across northern and central Nigeria that have killed thousands.

There is evidence that the military offensive has succeeded in cornering the militants in remote parts of the northeast, leaving them only capable of attacking soft targets.

Over 40 suspected Boko Haram members killed in Borno
MAIDUGURI - More than 40 suspected Boko Haram Islamist sect members were Wednesday killed in a Military raid involving air strikes and ground troops of the 7 Division, Nigerian Army in Bita village area along Damboa-Gwoza road of Borno state.

It would be recalled that 12 days ago, over 20 suspected terrorists were reportedly killed in the late hours of Friday 15th November, 2015, by the troops of the Division in Bita village, while several others escaped when the military laid an offensive attack in one of the Boko Haram hideouts in the area, as confirmed to Journalists by the Spokesman of the Division, Colonel Mohammed Dole.

Bita is a village which harbours stronghold camps of Boko Haram terrorists located 32 kilometres west of Gwoza. While Gwoza town is about 135 kilometres away from Maiduguri, the state capital which had witnessed series of attacks and killings in recent times.
