When team was in desperate need of goals Jay-Jay once in a while showed up.

Kanu was always clutch in the opposite for the SE.

Jamiuokolaa:
But why should a striker keep clean sheets in 9 major tournaments for his country over a 12 year period..if we include the 2004 AFCON?

Is this not an abominable record ? shocked

And he was collecting match Bonuses from the NFF

GBApilo aka "Absolute Zero" was more of a problem to the NT than Okocha.

Jay Jay has scored in Quater Finals, Semi Finals and Finals of the AFCON.

Even against the likes of Benin republic, Kanu failed miserably!

We would have fared better with the likes of Atanda Sakibu, David Tyavkase, Emeka Nwanna etc as CFs

In 12 seasons of EPL he only scored double digits twice. Nigeria best striker o

Underage tournament that even Mexico has won.

Top striker that couldn't score a single goal in NINE tournaments!

How can we rate you when Ekong, Ahmed Musa, and Garba Lawal have more goals than you in international tournaments?

raumdeuter:
The biggest trophy Nigeria won outside Africa was Olympic gold which Kanu led Nigeria to win vs legends like Ronaldo, Rivaldo R. Carlos when it was Okochas turn to lead he fumbled and couldnt even lead us to World cup 2006

Very bold and attacking lineup!

Ekong, Awaziem, Simon to come in and lock up shop when we're hopefully comfortably ahead.

BankyGee:
Matchday!

I'd love us to use this formation and players against South Africa. South Africa won't sit back like Rwanda, so we need our two dribblers on both flanks, Chukwueze against South Africa is always like Chukwueze against Madrid. Ademola Lookman will get to beat any left-back there and get space to either shoot or pass to Tolu who'd be lurking in the box.

Ndidi alone seff can man the back, he's shown it, but combination of him and Uche will be good because Uche can hold, guide and progress with the ball, so sometimes he'll be with Iwobinho in attack, sometimes with Ndidi in defence, it'll be like 4-1-2-3 when attacking and back to 4-2-3-1 when defending...

Subs:
- Dessers and Tolu somewhere in the game, maybe if we haven't scored in the first half, turn it to 4-4-2

- Onyedika for Uche around the 60-ish minutes
- Moses Simon for Chukwueze in the 70-ish minutes if Chukwueze has failed to impact the game in any way then push Lookman to the RW.
- Any other subs na to just see the game off.

My scoreline prediction: 🇿🇦 South Africa [0]–[2] Nigeria 🇳🇬

Game day! cool

I don't know how the guys will do it but I take God beg them make dey sha manufacture win make we collect 3 points. Even if na 1/2 - 0 I go take am like that.

I think Chukwueze should start he usually does well against the Southies.

Passenger that was included in the team of the tournament? Egbon put the Amala back for fire e never done.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1994_African_Cup_of_Nations#CAF_Team_of_the_Tournament

Which dirty Quarterfinal did Alhaji Dandruff drag Senegal to with Papa Diop and Henri Camara scoring crucial goals.

Polling booth winner that couldn't perform in EPL despite playing for Liverpool.

Okocha that played for perennial relegation candidates Bolton managed to still be nominated for PFA best player for 2003/2004.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003%E2%80%9304_FA_Premier_League#PFA_Team_of_the_Year

raumdeuter:
The AFCON won, what did Okocha do there beyond being a passenger

Diouf took his country to a world cup quarter finals, As leader of the Eagles, Okocha couldnt even qualify Nigeria when he was the leader of the team in 2006.

In 2002 world cup, he led the team to a disgraceful group stage exit when his only contribution was celebrating Aghahowas goal with his "I love you Nkechi" underwear

Before we explore Okochas disgraceful clubside performances

Good ranking but Eto should be top.

Salah has ghosted for Egypt in many tournaments unlike Samuel who has led Cameroon to many AFCON victories and he's the competition's all time leading goal scorer.

Added to that Etoo is Africa's second highest Balon D'or finisher plus his three UCL trophies (scoring in two finals)

Ibime:
Salah
Eto
Drogba
Kanu pre-heart condition
Okocha
Kanu post-heart condition
Adebayor
Diouf

SA away? After CHAN Nigeria hasn't beaten them on their ground bar in 10 years. A team that has beaten Morocco and Ghana on their home turf is not to be underestimated.

Realistically a draw is what looks odds on to happen but I'm very optimistic we can snatch an unlikely win.

Chai NFF, JP, and Finidi don turn all us to further maths exponents.

"if 2x = 3b then by calculating the square root of 5g we get 444" grin

minfelix:
if they decide to deduct points from all second placed teams, walai 9ja will qualify to the play off at best…lest just win our 3games and gather that 19 points and maybe hope zimbabwe remains at the bottom of the table…cos we just took 2points from them…

you see all those other teams like Gabon,Cameroon,Burkina faso and senegal queuing up in that 4place spot…the rate at which all of them will fall off that table and have Nigeria climbing them will be so brutal🤣🤣🤣🤣…cos they have all taken 6points from their various bottom place teams

Not as bad a performance as I initially knocked them for.

Osimhen's goal should have stood from the highlights.

Rubbish performance but I'll take the win.

Composed and mature display from Fredrick.

Tolu too was good value for his goal.

Pray Osimhen is fit for the SA match.

We're still in it.

P.S. Why are we fond of making smaller teams look like prime Barca after we struggle to get a goal? Anyway that's a discussion for another day.

Hmmm very bold move if true something I wouldn't personally do but I guess when you're down you have to do the extra ordinary.

TheSuperNerd:
Benjamin Frederick is rumored to start in defence today. We may see Frederick and Bassey CB pair. Time will tell.

Ekong is Captain, Leader and was huge at the last Afcon in Peseiro's Ultra defensive conservatige system but let us be honest, moving forward, it is about time we move on from Ekong. His error was Zimbabwe is a pointer to the truth that our Defence needs Upgrade at the center. The Speed of recovery is lacking and it cost us vs Zimbabwe in the dying mins.

Whether we make it to the USCAMEX mundial or not, we need to have a side ready for the Afcon and future tournaments. It is time to move on from Ekong. He has served well.

Nice lineup almost identical to mine.

Not sure Ndidi and Raphael can function together. In a high stakes game like this I would prefer Onyeka's energy.

Love your sub options.

BankyGee:
If that formation change is true, then it's obvious Éric Chelle has been watching Galatasaray's matches and want to play to Osimhen's strength 😁🔥

Using the formation, this would be my preferred Starting XI :

Subs:
- If Osimhen has scored like two goals, Dessers to replace him
- Ademola to replace Moses Simon (60-ish minutes)
- Benjamin Fredrick to replace Troost-Ekong (70-ish)
- Christiantus to replace Iwobi, (70-ish)
- Dele-Bashiru to replace Onyedika (80-ish)

If we switch to 4-4-2 somewhere in the game, then it should be Dessers and Tolu after Osimhen might've scored, to let him rest and be unleashed against South Africa on Tuesday.

It's Game day!

Times like this is when it's less fun being a fan of the SE but that's what being a true supporter entails.

The players have their fate in their own hands we can only hope they understand enough and translate it into better performances starting with today.

People understandably are negative but for me I will stay optimistic until it's no longer mathematically possible. I don steady my mind if e go the other way lol.

Simon has started the season sharp should definitely start ahead of Lookman who hasn't featured yet this season.

I really wish moses Simon doesn't start any of our games, his recent performance in this qualifying phase hasn't been encouraging at all,

What a transfer window this was!

For me it was a mixed bag for Nigerian players and was looking like it was going to be an anti-climax thankfully yesterday's flury of transfers saved the day.

I will start first with the negatives. Osimhen and Lookman failing to get the big high profile moves they undoubtedly deserved was a huge disappointment. Ademola in particular is really painful but hopefully something happens that puts him back on track.

Boniface too missing out on his big move to AC Milan was another sore point but I'm happy Werder Bremen will offer him the chance to get his career back on track.

Ndidi's move to Turkey and Iheanacho's contract termination sums up the not so pleasant aspects of this window.

For positives Tolu and Chrisantus moves to the EPL is definitely the highlight for me considering the level of football they were playing a year and a half ago.

Chukwueze also snagged a decent move that should give him the platform to showcase his talent.

Fredrick's loan move to Belgium is a good step for him in his career progression.

Awaziem coming back to top level European football is great.

Overall decent transfer window.

Now to mission impossible with the SE. Still hopeful they will pull it off.
