Gentiger: You can go back to school here in the States to increase your earnings and have an edge over your contemporaries. You need not spend a fortune to do that. You can take full advantage of Federal and Private loans and repay over time. The Good thing about taking and repaying loans as of when due is that it builds up your credit history and makes you credit worthy. So my advice to all new immigrants is to begin building your credit ratings. How do you do that? The moment you have a job, you can approach any of the stores in your locality offering credit cards to customers. For those in California, try out Marshall or Macy stores. There are many others. You can begin by taking $500 - $1000 credit card facility from these stores for your shopping. These stores mentioned and others are where I buy my clothes. Their services are exceptional.
Back to What we were saying, going back to school need not be tedious. I'll advice each and everyone already in the States to evaluate their certificates or academic credentials with the appropriate evaluation centers scattered. across the States. This is a very important step if you must go to school. Secondly choose a course of study most sought after. Do programs that will make you indispensable. Always verify average yearly income for any program you choose and job availability. When you are satisfied with your chosen program, then you can proceed to the next level.
You must choose schools with the necessary accreditation for the desired course of study. Ensure you review the schools in your locality for competitiveness and financial aid availability. This is very important . Private schools are expensive but better in terms of academic output. Again, they churn out graduates much faster than government schools. Classes are not congested and students are given personal attention, usually, you may be assigned to a professor to guide you through your chosen course of study. This is the advantage of private over public schools.
When you have chosen your school and your course of study, the next phase is how to pay for tuition and other related expenses. This is where federal grant and federal/private loans come in. I will break it down for you to understand. Let's proceed.
When you enroll for any house of study in a college or university setting, as a green card holder you are entitled to $5500 grant. It's called the Pell Grant and is non-refundable. It's awuf. With this grant, your school fee is reduced by $5,500. All schools will draw this grant to your attention. It is your entitlement. America sweet die!!!
Next, you need to create a pin for your Federal Government loans. Loans are not grants. Loans from the government are repayable over a period of 10 years with a fixed but low interest rate in comparison to Private loans. Avoid private loans as much as you can. To get your pin, log on to www.pin.ed.gov. Fill out the required forms and allow a maximum of 3 business days to have your pin approved. Your pin is your financial power as far as government loans are concerned. Do not share it and do not disclose to third parties.
Below are the various Federal government grants you can take advantage of. It covers all levels of studies, college students, undergraduates or graduate students.
1.Federal Stafford Loan 2. Federal graduate plus loan 3. Federal Parent plus loan If you don't want these loans but want to be employed by your school and have your salary used to service your tuition, Then take advantage of the 4. Federal Work study.
To apply for Federal Stafford loan, you must first have your admission for your program of study, Then log on to www.fafsa.gov. You can also take a look at this site for additional information: www.studentloans.gov. I wish everyone a lovely study life in the US.
A word of advice:
If your highest level of studies is WAEC/NECO, please don't travel down to the States without atleast 5 WAEC/NECO scratch cards. You will need it here. Trust me when I tell you this. Again, if you are a graduate of any field of study, approach your graduate school and have your transcript processed. Keep a personal reference copy and have your school send a copy to any one of the certificate evaluation services here in the States. I wish I had someone to tell me all these before I left Nigeria. I plan travelling down though. Log on to www.Wes.org. This is one of the best certificate evaluation service providers you can find. There are many others. Google them up and ensure they are properly accredited to provide that service in the US.
God bless you all. Gentiger signing off from Los Angeles. Big Dawg!! Thanks muchos amigos |

engyadewale: God of Shiloh and Pastor E.A. Adeboye did favour me yesterday, May 6 when I had my interview at US embassy. Good people of this fabulous forum should join me in praising and thanking this Most High God.........Almighty God is indeed great oh. My interview experience is as follows: I arrived at the embassy around few minutes past 6 a.m. Though I was scheduled for 10a.m. appointment. I didn't want to take any chance because Lagos traffic could be very unpredictable. I met some people who were scheduled for 6.30/7a.m. non-immigrant interviews so the security personnel attended to the non-immigrants first till it was around some minutes to 10a.m. Then, we, the DV lottery immigrants and other immigrants were called to form a queue for security checks. Pls note, certain items such as phones, camera, liquid like perfume, flash drives and any sharp object are not allowed to be carried into the interview room. I didn't want to go with my phone initially but my friend questioned why I would go out without any phone, should there be reasons to make calls. So I took my phones along. But when instructed to leave all those items behind, I looked for one of the MOPOLs around and asked him to keep my phones for me. He agreed but joked that I was going to give him 100 dollars. I went through the security checks, all sealed envelopes were asked to be opened even the sealed medical report. Our names were checked against a list using the 2nd notification letter by a woman and a payment slip was issued for the visa application fee of 330 dollars or 54,500 naira equivalent and we were marched to the interview hall. A paper ticket was issued at the entrance of the hall containing number and on entering the hall, security details directed us to the cashier point for payment. I paid in dollars and two computer receipts were issued, one for the deparment of state and the customer copy. Thereafter, my tag number was called to submit the originals and photocopies of my certificate together with my int'l passport, passport photographs (2x2) and a little paper form where we were instructed to fill our name, pertitioner name and our residential address in nigeria including mobile number. Everything was submitted and we were advised to wait till our tag numbers appeared on a digital display screen, to be interviewed by the Consular Officers. I initially felt fearful but remembering all I have read on this forum, i reassured myself that all would be well. After waiting for close to two hours, my tag number finally appeared on window 14 and with smiles I approached this fine white guy...........lolz
Me: Good Afternoon Sir CO: Good Afternoon Me: how are you doing? CO: fine, thank you Me: you are welcome CO: may I take your finger prints pls Me: I quickly placed my left fingers without the thumb on the scanner since I have watched others before my turn then followed by right fingers without the thumb and then the two thunbs at the same time. CO: good Me: alright Sir CO: could you raise your hand up, swearing that all you say here would be truths and nothing but the truths Me: yes I do CO: good Me: smiles CO: do you have your payment receipts with you? Me: yes I do CO: pls let me have them Me: I quickly passed the two copies to him and he signed on my customer's copy and returned it to me. CO: is this application? (Showing me the forms I sent to KCC), pls sign on the yellow line there, passing the forms to me Me: I signed and returned to him CO: what's your highest qualification? Me: I hold a bachelor's degree of engineering in electrical/electronics CO: good (looking at his system). Did you serve after you graduated? Me: yes I did CO: where? Me: in Bauchi State CO: what did you do there? Me: I was posted to a secondary school, Government Day Secondary School, Misau. CO: good. Since then what are you doing? Me: I work with StanbicIBTC bank PLC as a direct sales agent. CO: he started typing on his system and said everything looks good. I'm gonna give you the visa Me: thank you Sir CO: congratulations Me: thank you CO: he took two sheets of paper, circling an address where I would pick up my visa after a week and the second paper, directing how I would pay the green card fee before travelling and those sheets were handled to me. Sincerely yours, I left the hall with bundles of joy and the very first security I met on my way out, I dash the guy 1k, another security guy too, 1k and then the MOPOL guy too 1k. I'm so grateful to Almighty God for making this possible. I thank all members of this fabulous forum for all your contributions. God has indeed favoured me. Perhaps I should share this too. I came across this forum when I got my 1st notification and was really confused on the steps to take. I contacted a female friend who her brother also won the lottery some years ago to connect me with her brother in US so he could put me through all the processing. To my surprise, the lady told me that her brother insisted that I should arrange marriage with her before he could render any assistance. The lady said she was not happy about her brother's requirement and that she had her fiance. She advised me to look elsewhere for assistance, that she would not even want to go into such arrangee marriage because of travelling out. I was totally lost on what to do. I decided to google certain agents' addresses that I heard on radio and I prayed to God to help me. While playing with words on google search engine so as to get the information, I came about this link and I was so happy that I didn't even bother looking for any agent again. Since then, I have been taking my time to read posts and comments and once in awhile contributed too. This forum has been so helpful and I want to bless God for it. It's my earnest prayer that those who are yet to be interviewed would be favoured by God and their visas be granted IJN. AMEN PRAISE BE TO GOD ALMIGHTY.......HE IS INDEED THE MOST HIGH GOD. Congrats bro! Same way I found this forum. |

DemolaNg: @ALL: Join me give Glory to GOD. On April 16, I got to the interview timely with my family of four, as early as 6.20am before the 7am appointment were called to queue up. All protocol observed.
With the knowledge gathered on Nairaland, all documents were well arranged with photocopies of each and questions answered. Even the complain of the laminated NYSC certificate was tackled.
But to my surprise, despite the fact that my two kids were all around me, the CO requested for the pictures of my babies at Birth, shortly after birth or of their mum in their pregnancy, which was not among the album we went with. At that point we were given a form to request for another appointment date when we have them ready for presentation.
April 24 was eventually given to present them, so I went with the pictures taking at the naming ceremony, with the wall framed pictures of my family. Within 2 minutes of the assessment of the pictures, we were granted the Pick up date and venue for the VISA.
Glory be to God Congrats Sir! |

uniqueprivacy: Hello my e-family members it's good to be back once again after about a month and a half of my absence on this forum. This wasn't intentional, it's a very long story. I am just going to summarize it. After sharing my success story on this forum and while preparing for my journey, you know trying to source for fund, I had a bullet attack which was meant to terminate my life, in order to pollute my testimony but against the wish of the enermies my God didn't let it happen that way. He saved me and kept me alive to fulfill my American dream. it is my pleasure to let you know that this testimony is coming to you live from Philadelphia PA. I left naija on the 16th April with British Airways connected through London(Heathrow Airport) and arrived Philadelphia on the 17th of April, to God be the glory.
let me use this opportunity to congratulate those who had their successful interviews, 2NL and trip to their various destinations. Also to pray for those waiting for their 2NL, interviews, trips and 1NL by May 1st. I wish you all success and God's favour, IJN amen.
finally I will advise everyone to be prayerful and commit his or her self to God almighty because the enermy is not happy to see good things coming our way. remember what the Bible in the book of John 10:10 says: "the enermy commet not but to steal, kill and to destroy..."
May God bless us all and give us divine speed to fulfill our dreams in life IJN, amen. Thank GOD for HIS faithfulness! |
