WEDNESDAY, 30 MARCH 2011 00:00 OPEYEMI AGBAJE

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a centrist, non-ideological “rally” has dominated Nigerian democracy since 1999. Having controlled the presidency, National Assembly and most state governorships and legislative houses for 12 years, it often has not acted as if it fully appreciates the weight of its moral and political responsibility! PDP can claim to be the party of national unity (evidently the bonds of power and money are deeper than tribe, tongue and faith!), economic reform and international acceptance. In the South-South, North-Central and South-East, PDP is the default party, and in the North, it is often the party of the mainstream establishment.

Ex-President Obasanjo reformed telecommunications; negotiated Nigeria’s re-acceptance into the international community and restored a sense of nationhood that dangerously tethered on the edge during Abacha’s days of terror. In his second term, Obasanjo assembled a strong economic team leading to the elimination of Nigerian foreign debt; pension reforms; banking consolidation; macroeconomic stability and strong fiscal management. He was less successful on social reforms with education, health and social infrastructure remaining sub-optimal and poverty endemic. Even though he eventually developed the right template for power sector reforms (Electric Power Sector Reform Act 2005), Obasanjo failed in its implementation. Umaru Yar’adua’s tenure recorded only one major achievement-the Niger-Delta amnesty.

The PDP’s greatest failings are the quality of democratic practice, shameful elections conducted in 2003 and 2007 and deepening of corruption in Nigeria. Fortunately for the party, its opponents cannot claim substantive qualitative difference as politicians cross from party to party opportunistically such that sensible voters have now learnt to evaluate candidates for political office on the basis of individual assessments. When President Goodluck Jonathan became substantive president in May 2010, just 10 months ago, I wrote “Memo to Goodluck Jonathan” in which I argued (consistent with opinions expressed by other commentators and newspaper editorials) that given the short time at his disposal, he should concentrate on limited priorities-power, electoral reform and Niger-Delta. On each of these, the president scores an A!

He unveiled an excellent power sector road map designed to place the sector under private sector ownership and management; and executed it leading to expressions of interest from over 331 credible local and international investors. I will personally like Jonathan and Professor Barth Nnaji to conclude the implementation of this road map!!! Especially as his main opponents do not seem to understand what is required to reform the sector. In the short term, power production has reportedly risen to 4,000 MW. Current oil production figures of 2.6million barrels per day are a clear indicator of success of Jonathan’s Niger-Delta policy, (in spite of the activities of a strange “MEND” whose strategic objectives seem to tally with those of the “Northern Political Leaders Forum” (NPLF) rather than the Niger-Delta!!!) Jonathan appointed Professor Attahiru Jega INEC chairman and has conducted fairly credible elections in Anambra (where PDP lost) and Delta States. He provided every funding requested by INEC and freed up the political space, including by restoring ACN candidate Nuhu Ribadu’s AIG rank and permitting him and Nasir El-Rufai return from exile.

I do not know the point at which public opinion (or mass hysteria?) evolved into expecting Jonathan to solve in ten months all the problems of the Nigerian state accumulated over 5o years of independence, a clearly irrational expectation!!! But surprisingly Jonathan has recorded other successes. Education-new national secondary curriculum; highest budgetary allocation for education in 2011 budget proposals; a policy of establishing centres for entrepreneurial development in all federal universities; “Almajiri” education policy; and establishment of nine new federal universities; transportation-revival of rail systems; upgrading the Enugu airport to international status; achieving total radar coverage and US Category 3 status permitting resumption of direct flights; new terminal building at Aminu Kano Airport Kano; labour-new minimum wage and constitutional amendment on National Industrial Court.

Gas and Energy-”gas revolution” policy framework for leveraging gas for industrialisation; $3bn Oando/AGIP gas processing plant; petrochemical plant and several fertiliser plants in conjunction with foreign investors; refineries reportedly working at capacity and absence of fuel queues; roads-multiple ongoing road projects, including East-West and Coastal Road;  citizens engagement on Facebook and proactive actions to rescue Nigerians in Egypt and Libya; revival of textile sector through government support; several industrial intervention funds for aviation, SMEs, entertainment, manufacturing, power etc; foreign policy-sensible diplomatic posture leading to strong roles in ECOWAS, UN and bilateral relations. Despite permutations, he united the PDP behind him trouncing the formidable Atiku Abubakar during the party’s primaries. In spite of severe provocations, he successfully navigated minefields during the Yar’adua vacuum and thereafter. He may yet deliver on important legislations-Sovereign Wealth Fund, Freedom of Information, and Petroleum Industry Bills and has already passed AMCON, minimum wage and money laundering/anti-terrorism bills.

Jonathan can claim to be the candidate of national unity, a federation of co-equal nationalities and national integration, freedom and openness, power sector reform, education and critical infrastructure. His major weakness is his party, but in spite of that, I think he is the sensible choice in these elections! I score him 7 for personal qualities; 6 on vision and leadership; 7 for policy platform and manifesto; 6 on economic management; 4 on anti-corruption; 8 for international relations; 8 on national unity and stability; 8 on democracy and institution-building; 7 for human rights, press freedom and open society; 6 for administration and execution and 6 bonus marks for his running-mate totalling 73 out of a possible 110 marks.
I would like to take you all back and analyse this shameful post.

First of all, the common man can't relate to all this technical mumbo jumbo that has been spewed here. Ask the average nigerian, what do we need? The answer will always be Jobs, electricity, good roads, a good healthcare system. For any leader to claim any meaningful achievement, he must have successfully tackled at least one of these issues. Lets go back to what this GEJ nuthead posted.

Current oil production figures of 2.6million barrels per day are a clear indicator of success of Jonathan’s Niger-Delta policy, (in spite of the activities of a strange “MEND” whose strategic objectives seem to tally with those of the “Northern Political Leaders Forum” (NPLF) rather than the Niger-Delta!!!) He provided every funding requested by INEC and freed up the political space, including by restoring ACN candidate Nuhu Ribadu’s AIG rank and permitting him and Nasir El-Rufai return from exile.
I keep on hearing about this increase of 4000MW, Please which day are we going to see the evidence? You say he has unveiled a roadmap and executed it. If this has happened why is there no noticeable improvement in our power sector? Instead all I have noticed is a degeneration of our power supply. I live in the FCT. The nations capital and till today I see light at most, 3hrs a week! You claim fairly credible elections have been conducted in Anambra and Delta!!!! Now I know you are a joker. I am an indegene of anambra and I can authoritatively tell you that 80% of the registered voters were not allowed to vote because their names were inexplicably missing from the voter's register. Do you listen to news at all? The Delta elections were even more of a sham, videos of people stealing ballot boxes during the elections were posted all over the net and you have the audacity to call it "fairly credible"? He restored Nuhu Ribadu's rank and permitted El-Rufai to return to Nigeria? Haba! now I know you are just reaching. How has this in anyway improved the Nigerian economy?! These are personal favours he granted to individuals. Stop disgracing yourself.

I do not know the point at which public opinion (or mass hysteria?) evolved into expecting Jonathan to solve in ten months all the problems of the Nigerian state accumulated over 5o years of independence, a clearly irrational expectation!!! Hmmm,  see grammar. You call all these announcements successes? Ideas that are yet to bear fruit. Establishment of 9 new universities when the existing ones are poorly maintained and funded? When 80% of the nations graduates are jobless or being forced to hold menial jobs not befitting their education. Revival of rails? Apart form Lagos please tell me where else you have seen a train. These are projectS that are still in their conceptional stages and you have the temerity to describe them as successes?

He may yet deliver on important legislations-Sovereign Wealth Fund, Freedom of Information, and Petroleum Industry Bills and has already passed AMCON, minimum wage and money laundering/anti-terrorism bills.
If GEJ explained this Gas and energy thing as an achievement during his campaign, I bet the crowd would have fallen asleep in no time. Refineries are working at capacity and yet we still import our fuel? Citizens engagement on facebook? We all know its not GEJ that writes all those things on fb, how many times has he refuted statements made through that medium? He united the PDP behind him trouncing the formidable Atiku Abubakar during the party’s primaries? By bribing virtually all the candidates? By releasing an indicted murderer on the day of the primaries just to get his vote?

Jonathan can claim to be the candidate of national unity, a federation of co-equal nationalities and national integration, freedom and openness, power sector reform, education and critical infrastructure. His major weakness is his party, but in spite of that, I think he is the sensible choice in these elections! All I can say is that I like your use of English. but it seems that is the only thing you derived from whatever extensive education you received. I'm still wondering whether this is a satirical piece or you are actually for real. If you believe that Jonathan has actually achieved all this, then I'm sorry to say, you should be transported to yaba left ASAP!

Poems For ReviewShe! by Chuks84(op): 2:23pm On Mar 26, 2011
She!

Her heart is pure.
Her heart is mine.
For every ache, she is my cure.
For her, all day i pine.
She completes me.
She is that missing piece.
Anything she wants I'll be.
Anything for her peace.
I confess, I'm smitten.
I confess, I'm in love.
All my defenses, she has beaten.
All I need, I've found in her cove.
My queen, my life, she's my everything.
My drug, my salve, she's my saviour.
Alas! Safe in her bosom, I want for nothing.
Alas! She doesn't exist, she's just a dream, all I long for.

It's not a story-it's a journal. If i wanted to make it more entertaining,i suppose i could make up salacious stories about aristos, drugs and sex. However, sometimes the most entertaining thing in real-life is sometimes something as simple as a trip to the dentist. In any case, this isn't a story,it's a journal that's pretty much about day to day experiences. I'm just getting started. I imagine it'll heat up as time goes by.
If it doesn't entertain you, then don't read it. grin
Lol, no offense meant, I sometimes get carried away with the anonymity one enjoys on forums like this, It makes me write things I wouldn't dream of saying to anybody on a normal day. On the up side, I like the way you write, you have a gift for expressing your thoughts in a very articulate manner.

No sir, with due respect, you are the bigger dunce. cool
While you wonder around, stunned by the profuse crap that emanates from your sorry thought processes, could you take time out to point out a link to the story CPC followers spread yesterday about Wole Soyinka and NN24? If you can't, then why open your mouth?
You seem to be thick headed. If you have evidence that the story was spread by CPC, please produce it. You made the allegation so I don't see why I should be the one producing the link. I have read your PM news link and I saw no mention of CPC or Buhari. It's obvious that you are one of those zombie followers of GEJ. You spend your whole scouring the net looking for news that make BB look bad. You had to resort to PM news, the same paper known to have printed a thousand and one false stories.

PoliticsD'banj Interviews Jonathan. by Chuks84(op): 11:29am On Mar 18, 2011
President Goodluck Jonathan and his running mate think so little of Nigerians that they have so far fled any venue where the presidential candidates have been invited to hold a debate. But when young Nigerians invited all the candidates to a debate tagged “What About Us?” to be anchored by acclaimed novelist, Chimamanda Adichie, many of them were certain that Mr. Jonathan would not say no to them.

They obviously didn’t know the man.

Instead of facing Adichie, Mr. Jonathan arranged his own one-man “debate,” inviting Nigeria’s hip-hop star, D'banj (whose real name is Dapo Daniel Oyebanjo) to ask him questions in a low-grade, soft session.

On March 17, 2011, D’banj took off his so-called Kokomaster hat and replaced it with that of the voice of the Nigerian youth as he took it upon himself to ask President Jonathan questions "concerning the youth."

We would not have bothered if Jonathan was being prepped for a reality show on D'banj's Koko mansion, but this was a session with a man asking Nigerian voters, including young ones, to entrust him with the highest political office in their country.

Having decided to duck from a debate organized by numerous Nigerian youth groups, Mr. Jonathan nevertheless wanted to show off that he's got the backing of the Nigerian youth. He chose a well-known popular entertainer as collaborator in a patently deceptive game.

Jonathan got it wrong!

Jonathan must have figured that the interview occurred at an opportune moment. It was his attempt to divert attention from the calls for real debates on an independent platform. Yet, in giving D’banj the job of asking him questions, Mr. Jonathan sought to give the impression that he’s in touch with the youth—and has great regard for them. But by choosing a rich stage performer who is obviously out of touch with the realities of the average Nigerian youth, President Jonathan showed himself up as a clueless leader who is out of tune with the vast majority of Nigerian youth and their top issues in the upcoming elections.

D'banj was an embarrassment. He spent much of the interview nodding blankly at Goodluck Jonathan's uninformed answers. The social media universe was merciless. It twittered insults at D’banj and his sponsor, Jonathan. On facebook, more barbs were flung at the two men. Many of D’Banj’s fans pointed to their newfound disrespect for the artist who is now seen as a man with a purchase price.

Many critics were disgusted that D’banj, who’s on Jonathan’s payroll, would dare appoint himself to represent the Nigerian youth.

By granting an interview to the likes of D’banj, Jonathan has ignored the politically aware coalition that formed “What About Us?”—a collection of talented, imaginative, articulate, highly educated and globally acclaimed Nigerian youth.

“Why would this man ignore the youth-led initiative for a real debate and give a comical interview to a hireling like D’banj?” asked a disappointed youth. “Is President Jonathan so scared that he won’t take questions from Chimamanda Adichie?” asked another.

D'Banj’s performance was so bad that he came out looking like a brainless political pawn, too grateful to sit across from a candidate who appears too timid and too unsure of himself to submit to any real debate.

Jonathan and the PDP may be misjudging the youth who are determined to put an end to the era of mediocrity and criminal showmanship that has dragged their nation backward for several decades.

For D’banj it was a regrettable moment, marking his career as an anti-youth crusader.

Adding to D’Banj’s miscalculation is the discovery that the Jonathan campaign is a sponsor of the Koko Concert scheduled to be held on the 25th of March, the same day as the Adichie-anchored youth debate. Many young people have reacted furiously to the news.

While this move might have been packaged by the Jonathan campaign as an ostensible outreach to the youth community, it came off as a huge gaffe, leaving the President looking disconnected from the core concerns of young people—and a man too afraid to speak to the youth without a script.

As for D’banj, the question is whether he’s going to ever regain respect within the Nigerian youth community. One former fan tweeted: "See d cheap propaganda of Dbanj n GEJ. I see y naija youths cant be trusted. Dbanj na west."

The entertainer’s huge public relations misstep might not matter to him, though; he’s making trips to the bank to lodge his lucre!

But one thing is certain, Nigerian youths don’t seem in any mood to be manipulated by politicians who hold them and their issues in contempt—or by their hirelings, whatever seductive songs they may sing!

The fact is that he made the statement that the west is being run by rascals, he has no right to call anyone a rascal, the irony is that a couple of pdp govs held sway in the west before their mandates were invalidated by the election tribunal due to the fraudulent manner in which their votes were obtained.
