why am I subtracting 8?
It is because of the obvious repetition viz:

look at the figure attached below.

For clarity i drew only 1 triangle
here is the repetition

if you take line FE as the base you get triangle FED among other 7 triangles. right?

Now, if you also take ED as the base, you'll also get triangle FED and the other 7.
So FED occurs twice.
Pick any one and discard the other.

Now, do the same for others like triangles EDC, DCB, CBA, BAH, AHG, HGF and GFE,

all 8 of them appears twice!
