Utomi joins presidential race Ayo Okulaja September 23, 2010 11:46PM The Protem National Chairman of the Social Democratic Mega Party (SDMP), Pat Utomi, has announced his decision to join the 2011 presidential race on the platform of the party. This would be the second time that Mr Utomi is taking a shot at the presidency. He was the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress in the 2007 general election, during which he polled 50,849 votes (0.14% of the total). Declaring his intent at a news conference in Lagos on Thursday, Mr Utomi said he will officially declare his ambition in three weeks. I will be making a formal declaration in three weeks' time. It will be in response to calls from various quarters for me to run. ``It will be unwise to shy away from the challenge of continuing to seek for a change in Nigeria," he said. The presidential applicant promised to prioritise development of education and improve the nation's healthcare delivery if elected, whilst he warned that the desired change in Nigeria would not be achieved if ‘Nigerians failed to elect credible leaders.' "The SDMP considers the electoral process the key to legitimacy of regimes and such legitimacy is critical to policy implementation," he said "We want to particularly focus on the youth who, for too long, have been made powerless as a few people made nonsense of our democracy. If those between the ages of 18 and 30 register and determine to vote to secure their future, the shame that has been our experience will be wiped out." Youth mobilisation He urged the youth to mobilise the populace toward the 2011 elections by enlightening the masses on the need to vote for candidates of their choices, as well as the need to defend their votes. Mr Utomi also called on the youth to organise public debates and invite all political applicants to tell people about their plans, in order to hold such aspirants accountable. http://234next.com/csp/cms/sites/Next/Home/5622484-146/utomi_joins_presidential_race__.csp |

Group moves to restore credible leadership to S’West By Olalekan Adetayo, Ibadan Thursday, 23 Sep 2010 Irked by alleged poor quality of leadership in the many of the states in the South-West, some concerned stakeholders are considering setting up a minimum standard which aspirants must meet to enjoy the support of the people of the region. To achieve this, a one-day summit on Yoruba development agenda has already been scheduled to hold in Ibadan, Oyo state capital on Thursday. Speaking with our correspondent on Wednesday, one of the organisers of the summit, Mr. Ayo Afolabi, said that it had been resolved that once the minimum standard is released through a communiqué at the end of the meeting, political parties would abide by such standard. Afolabi added that leaders of any political party that decide to ignore the standard and field a person of “lower quality” for election would have themselves to blame as the Yorubas would be mobilised against the candidate. He disclosed that the summit being put together by the Afenifere Renewal Group in collaboration with key Yoruba self-determination groups is expected to be attended by all Yoruba leaders irrespective of their political leanings. He said that a Professor of African Studies, University of California, United States, Dr. Wale Adebanwi, would give the keynote address at the summit with the theme “Yoruba values: A reawakening-agenda for 2011 and beyond.” He said, “The purpose of the gathering is to restore to the South West the kind of quality leadership that the region was known for. “We have been wondering why it is difficult for present day political office holders to match the achievements of our past leaders in the region. “It is our hope that at the end of the summit, we shall release the minimum standard required of any aspirant in the South West. “Political parties can only neglect the standard at their own electoral peril.” http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art201009230535446 |

Mayhem in Lagos …5 killed, over 100 vehicles vandalised By CHRISTOPHER OJI Thursday, September 23, 2010 Five persons were killed and over 100 vehicles destroyed in the early hours of Wednesday at the Onipanu area of Lagos when two factions of street urchins popularly known as Area Boys clashed. Daily Sun reliably gathered that trouble started when a notorious thug popularly identified as Bello, on Tuesday, allegedly led some members of a cult group and attacked some Area Boys at the Onipanu area. It was also learnt that during the attack, one Shina Ajah, Sule Abibu, Akeem Bashiru and other yet-to-be-identified persons were seriously injured. The injured persons were hospitalized but Ajah and four other Area Boys later died. At about 12.00 midnight yesterday, some Area Boys loyal to Ajah allegedly stormed the scene where Ajah was allegedly killed and unleashed terror on residents. The hoodlums also vandalized over 100 vehicles after they had allegedly looted the vehicles. An eyewitness who simply identifed himself as Wasiu told Daily Sun that vehicles parked on Idera, Awoyokun, Tewose and Ajegunle Streets were vandlaised while some night crawlers were injured by the hoodlums, On the cause of the hostility, Wasiu revealed that two factions of street urchins were supporters of different politicians in the area. According to him, the opponent to a politician ( name withheld) whom the late Shina was alleged to have supported felt that without Shina, backing he might win. So, he allegedly sent some cult groups to eliminate him and his group member. He alleged that when Shina’s loyalists heard of his death, they came on a reprisal attack. “It was the thugs that were loyal to Shina that wreaked havoc on the streets of Onipanu,” he said. When Daily Sun visited the streets mentioned, residents were seen fleeing the place for fear of further reprisal attacks. A resident, Sunday Ugbah said he had lived in the area for over six years and had never witnessed such mayhem “I escaped death by the whiskers because I was outside taking fresh air and I slept off until a young lady woke me up telling me to run for safety.” He said he managed to run inside the house where he saw many people armed with guns and other lethal weapons, adding that some of the area boys were shooting sporadically while others vandalized the vehicles. Another resident who simply identified herself as Biola claimed she knew the late Shina. “I saw him the day he was killed. He was with about 10 of his boys when he walked past the front of our house on Tuesday.” She said when the Area Boys were attacking her street, Awoyokun, she thought the invaders were armed robbers but was shocked to see them smashing vehicles. She later heard that the attackers came to protest Shina’s death. She accused the police of being insensitive to the residents’ plight as they did not come to the rescue of residents during the attack. However, the command’s spokesman, Mr. Frank Mba confirmed the clash between the two factions and said only two persons, Shina Ajah and a yet-to-be identified person died. He said the scene was visited by the policemen who removed the corpses to a public mortuary, Mba assured that the police was on top of the situation and advised residents to go about their normal duties without fear. http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2010/sept/23/national-23-09-2010-019.htm |
I think anioma should be ceded to the SE and the then the SE carves a state out of their area that way the non-igbos in the south who have been clamoring for their own state like the urhobo can have it |
MShittu:Arabs are the ones who pervert Islam. They are the ones whose ways the northerners have learned and become murderers. Arabs mix islam with their culture and thats where the barbaric nature comes from. Also the northerners need to stay away from the Hadith because it is evil. Nigeria can get all of those things you've mentioned from other African countries, we can even get it from ourselves if these political thieves are done away with and honorables are put in their place. Arabs have messed up the northerners and they would bent over backwards to kiss an arab man's feet but they are so quick to kill their own african brothers and call him an infidel. No to Arabs. |
MShittu:Why would nigeria need economic assistance from arab nations?what do they have to offer us that we dont have to offer them? |
MShittu:thats where diplomacy comes in.that is another reason southerners want the north to go their way because they lack deplomacy and want to attain everything by force.Treat your neighbor good and you have nothing to worry about. |
seanet02:Allah will provide for them ![]() |
ALMUSTAQIM:He's not muslim |
jabbok:hows that going to hurt them? |
IT'S EXISTENCE AS A COUNTRY |
Abagworo:It is a false prophesy. |
yabadabado:We dont need to be in the same country with each other.Fighting over resources can be check by regions going their own ways and if one country need a particular resource then they can establish trade. This will provide peace instead of a tug of war like we have today. |
if he really wanted to move the Igbo to Aso Rock,he would he calling igbo elites and organization for continuous round tables and blueprinting something out. There was no point of him making this address. I swear I hate that anything attached to that name "Orji".The never of this fool to use his people's name to campaign for IBB as if nobody can tell. ![]() |
Enough of this nonsense.when igbos start dealing their cards right and apply pressure by and work together then they will get to Aso Rock until them shut your mouth and stop looking for presidential handouts. |
