Farida Turns On Jonathan, Tells US Officials The President Is Interfering With Anti-Corruption Efforts Posted: September 1, 2010 - 22:31 By SaharaReporters, New York https://www.saharareporters.com/sites/default/files/page_images/news/2010/farida_waziri.jpg?1283376614 Farida Waziri's recent trip to the US has enabled her to make a case for her lack luster anti-corruption drive, and to pass the buck. And the person upon whom she is heaping the blame for her failures is her current boss: Nigeria's president, Goodluck Jonathan. Farida told some United States officials during her recent trip that Jonathan and some of his aides have completely crippled her operation by interfering directly in her anti-corruption work. Mrs. Waziri also told FBI trainers who visited the EFCC in Abuja that her terrible standing internationally is simply because her bosses never allow her to do her job. She gave examples of interference in the arrest and prosecution of economic criminals by the fallen former Attorney General of the Federation, Michael Aondoakaaa. She lamented that since Jonathan’s coming to power, his powerful aides (who are believed to be his Chief of Staff, Mike Oghiadomhe and the current Attorney General, Mohammed Bello Adoke) have become stumbling blocks. Although Mrs. Waziri's personal corruption and incompetence serve as major impediments to any meaningful anti-corruption work, EFCC officials have told Saharareporters that since assuming office, Jonathan has gone out of his way to muzzle the EFCC even more. Last week, the AGF Adoke openly chastised the Commission over its mode of operation, asking the agency to jettison its use of strong-arm tactics to fight corruption. Mr. Adoke’s statement was not specific to any particular case but sources told Saharareporters that one of his points of interference is Taraba State where the EFCC had planned to act on a series of powerful petitions against the governor, who had embezzled large sums of the monies belonging to the state. But Mr. Adoke's wife was quickly appointed as the Attorney General in the state, in order to forestall any further investigation of the case. Also last week, Mr. Adoke reportedly donated N250 million to the Jonathan campaign to forestall his removal after he said that former military dictator Ibrahim Babangida would not be investigated for stealing $12.4 billion Gulf oil windfall. That statement was said to have rankled the presidency. Mrs. Waziri’s complaint to the United States complicates Jonathan’s anti-corruption spinelessness. During his visit to the country a few months ago, he swore to the Obama administration and foreign policy specialists that he would move quickly on corruption. That was interpreted partly to mean he would relieve Mrs. Waziri, who is in the bad books of several international anti-corruption agencies, of her job. http://www.saharareporters.com/news-page/farida-turns-jonathan-tells-us-officials-president-interfering-anti-corruption-efforts |
asha 80:Since when does a school teach a dialect. Of course they are going to teach general Igbo. If the igbos from ikwerre want to learn how to speak their dialect either go back to their village(if theres any left) or ask their parents to teach them. In all of the igbo shcools no igbo gets to learn his own dialect in school just general so why are they complaining?! ![]() |

Frank-Aba:You make a pretty good argument i think we can both agree on your conclusion but the way African leaders can go about doing that is by using some of the examples of people such as Gaddafi and Mugabe. And also keep in mind that "every word counts" and the slightest changing of words or removal changes its whole meaning. I guarantee you that Gaddafi said more before and after what he was quoted for that would make what he said entirely different and may even make him look better in the international audience. The Western powers are good at screwing up words. I see that you are familiar with US politics so i would assume that you are familiar with people like fidel castro? let me ask you a question would you consider him bad or good? |
koruji:I definitely agree with alot that you wrote. As far as Gaddafi, he is not helping Italy, in fact during his last visit he made another taunting comment which caused an uproar. He went to italy to make good relations with them after after a hate they had for each other that stemmed from a 30year occupation of libya by Italy and putting there people into concentration camps. The whole immagration thing is something that italy wanted to talk about. There is no way gaddafi is going to help those people, he has his own agenda. and one of them is to spread africanism and islam.spain which is like right beside italy is suffering the same fate. What Gaddafi did with the nuclear program is set up a bargain in which he and his country will not be controlled by western powers. That was a smart move.a move that came alot from the convincing of is son,and a move many african presidents need to learn how to take. For instance, GEJ and the whole FIFA happening, he definitely got bully by an organization. Many ask how does a sovereign state get bullied by an sports organization?! Yes IBB's move was dumb and very unfortunate, however that is the move that most african countries make and believe it or not it is by force or through a deal cut with that president/dictator. About mugabe its true he could have handled the situation way better and thought it out more. It may have not been so smart to expelled to white farmers with the Know-how with regular citizens who know nothing about harvesting. However, thats what the taste of freedom can do ones an oppressed people get the upper hand against it "opressors". One thing our African leaders suffer from is a baby mentality, meaning the act off of emotions in stead of channeling that energy towards tact, strategy, and manipulation. |
koruji:You've got it all wrong if you knew the way gaddafi is known to speak to Western countries then you would understand the context quite well. He said things as such to strike panic into the European people. The whole ignorant african thing that you are concerned about is sarcasm for the way europeans look at us africans. You might as well picture him saying this with a smirk on his face. Dont you think he knows that he know Europe will not give him money to do so? "We don't know what will happen, what will be the reaction of the white and Christian Europeans faced with this influx of starving and ignorant Africans,". if that quote coming from an African muslim does not sound like a taunt to you then I dont know what does. As far as mugabe goes, Zimbabawean finances were frozen by the same people who are accusing im of making his people suffer and desease. How can a countries water supply be ridded of contamination without finances or how can it do anything big without it. The West says they will sanction any country who supplies them with help as far as goods or whatever,so who are the real devils? Did you know that the Zimbabawe economy as increased by 1.1 or so without the help of the IMF? . The IMF is an organization that controls countries, makes them there slave. They "offer" to help third world countries but on a condition, the condition that they decide how the countries economy be runned. and keep in mind that the money being loan has high interest tagged on to it. Read about who IBB made the deal with that lead to the collapse of the Nigerian economy.Don't be gullible when africans kill the slave mentality like Gaddafi and Mugabe are doing then things will begin to change for the good. But anyways check the IBB thing out. ![]() |

the people that have the last word in Igbo village. whatever they say is final. Not really like they were before. |
ChinenyeN:Yes watever u say mr. ojiani ![]() |
EzeUche:True. Im pretty sure the people fighting in the international court for Biafra have included all of igbo land in the outline of biafra. We must remember that the people who are putting together the case for biafra are not only a team of lawyers but historians, geographers, etc. who know every point in igboland that we ourselves would be shocked to find out. My main thing is to leave no Igbos behind or our land. |
I swear I love the way that this guy deals with Europeans lol. This is what you call a real african leader. Gaddafi and Mugabe are the only African leaders who arent puppets to the West. |
Onlytruth:This logic behind this whole thing makes nothing but sense. Unless through conquest, which it is proven didnt happen, there is no way an whole indigenous people learn and speak the language of the visitor instead of the other way around. It just doesnt make sense. If they want to goes as far as the claim that Ibani slave masters set Igbos free and thats how they populated the people, this claim can render as nonsense for the fact that, "slave masters do not bow down to their slaves and learn their language and make it essential to do so, it is the slave that learns the masters language". We are know that its not possible.definitely things have been subdued. |
If the children are being used for monetary reason.why doesnt he subsidize their education and allow them to stay in bordering schools. Its quite clear to everyone with a brain that these "child witches" are labeled by criminal "pastors" so that the family of these children will pay money to the pastors to be "cured". we the families cannot afford to do so thats when the child is killed or disgraced out of the community. Obviously we know its poverty not witchcraft, duhhh.smh. As much resources, not just oil that that state has this should be taken care of. I blame the FG anyways for allowing these bas.tards(which include themselves) to have whole oill wells to themselves. At the rate of poverty that nigeria is in, it is disgusting to know these gorilla-looking fools are having not just one but some multiple oil wells to themselves and they can just sleep at night comfortably and thereazzholes even have children of there own. |
Dis Guy:Anyways clear thereis hausa/fulani influence on the yoruba there. Point blank whether hes been in a loop or no loop, aint nobody voting for him against GEJ no matter how you look at it.and no northerner, no matter how much saraki claims to be fulani, is going to give the northern slot to him, a yoruba man. Let him go run for Emir of Kwara ![]() |
olafolarin:Not true. It is heavily influenced by hausa/fulani culture. Kwara is a conquered state by the fulani anywayz. Btw, even if Saraki was to go against GEJ, where would he get his votes from? The average nigerian doesnt even know him. [flash=200,200] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWGhCOzLvZk[/flash] Kwara Yoruba guy, Not your typical yoruba culture like u claim |
ijaw_girl:As far as looks go.when i was in Rivers this past january it was confirmed to me that the ijaws have some of the beautiful woman down there so if anybody says they dont look good its lies lol. Anyways lets get back to the basics instead all of these insults back and forward. Im not really understanding the whole Ibani thing as far as language goes. Since you are Ijaw you speak Ijaw right? Is Ibani a different language from Ijaw language? Another thing, i think okrika people are ijaw although alot are with igbo blood but why is it that alot get so quick to say they are not ijaws that they are different.?Is it something similar to how an igbo from ikwerre denies that he's Igbo or something and if so why? |
Don’t dare Ojukwu –APGA warns Jonathan From PETRUS OBI, Enugu National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh has warned President Jonathan and his PDP to steer clear of Anambra State as the party is ready to fight to protect the mandate which the people gave to Mr. Peter Obi in the last election. Umeh, who addressed a press conference in Enugu, Monday against the backdrop of attempt by the PDP to take over the entire South-eastern states, also warned that any attempt to claim Anambra would amount to an attempt on former Biafran leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu whichwould not be tolerated. The APGA chairman, who was particularly concerned with the utterances credited to President Jonathan over the weekend in Abia State where Governor T.A Orji defected to the PDP, that Anambra State would be next, warned that the people would resist such an intimidation. He urged Dr. Jonathan not to dissipate energy trying to annex the South-east but to first of all solve the problems in his own home front if he wanted to run for presidency in the 2011 general elections. Said he: “That is a wishful thinking; Jonathan should learn from Obasanjo, who in his brute dictatorship could not conquer Anambra State under the control of APGA. So for him to begin to imagine that the state will join the PDP so soon is a very wrong calculation on his part. One is that Mr. Peter Obi who is governor of Anambra State today is holding a sacred mandate of the people given to APGA, Governor Obi, and principally, to Dim Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu. “If you go through the longest road running through Awka today you will still see Ojukwu’s billboards with Obi, ‘this is my last wish’ vote for him. Our people voted for APGA, Ojukwu in the main and then Peter Obi as an instrument. So it’s not something anybody can stay somewhere and think he can takeover. All the things Obasanjo did to destroy APGA failed due to our resistance; he even admonished the Igbo to stop following Ojukwu’s party. So this time around, the last thing Goodluck can achieve is taking over Anambra State, he cannot do that. Governor Obi on his own cannot join the PDP with this mandate he has now; that mandate is the most sacred mandate in Nigeria; it is the only one, anybody can safely say that was given by the people. “From what we have read in recent times it is obvious that his own backyard is leaking, so if he is serious about bidding for the presidency he should go back home to patch-up his backyard instead of being desperate to annex the whole of Igbo land. It is not the way to get the support of Igbo people by intimidation and force; it has not worked for anybody in the past and it will not work this time around. On T.A Oji’s defection, Umeh said the Abia governor “is confused and we shall look for a man of valour who will fly our flag for the governorship election in Abia State. He has a personal right to join any political party but in doing that is expected to be very firm and decisive. “On his invitation, Ojukwu went to receive him in Umuahia alongside the governor of Anambra on July 2; that he can within so short a time make a u-turn, he has in-advertently slighted Dim Chukwuma Odimegwu Ojukwu who we hold in very high esteem in Igbo land by telling the people that he had to join the PDP on the directive of President Jonathan. What he simply exhibited is lack of courage. And portrayed Igbo as slaves in Nigeria and I want to say that Igbo are not slaves and we can never be slaves; nobody can take Igbo by force the way Governor Orji made it to look. By abandoning Ojukwu and pitching his tent with Jonathan the way he presented it, what it shows is that he doesn’t have the courage to stand on anything Igbo.” On Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo’s assertion that APGA was a village party, the APGA boss challenged his PDP colleague to name the parties those prominent Abia leaders belonged to at their time. “Dr. M.I Okpara who was the premier of the Eastern Region and the greatest Igbo man from Abia State was a member of the NCNC; Okwesilieze Nwodo’s father served M.I Okpara in the government of NCNC. So if NCNC cannot be described as a village party but was able to impact in the lives of the people of Eastern Region, the people who made it happen then never belonged to an amorphous party like PDP; it could be said that Nwodo lost his head when he couldn’t remember historical records. The PDP which Nwodo is leading is an amorphous party and it doesn’t represent anything in Nigeria.” Also Reacting to recent endorsement of presidential aspirants in the zone, Chief Umeh said; “I was with Ojukwu in Dallas USA and we monitored all these developments in the internet and we were laughing away because if you look at the endorsements being paraded you will know that Igbo have not endorsed anybody. These endorsements were procured by those being endorsed and in a period of hunger and joblessness in Nigeria people are ready to do anything for money. “Ojukwu will come back in the next one week from his vacation and when he returns APGA will hold a leadership meeting to review all the shenanigans going on in the Igbo land politically and he will be speaking to our people. And I am sure when he speaks the people will respect him because they know where he is coming from all these people running round the streets are doing that because Ojukwu is not at home. And they are also sending people to Ojukwu to secure his support but one thing is very clear, Ojukwu is not looking for anything in Nigeria today except the uplift of the generality of the people. APGA as a political party will play the lead in determining who becomes president and anybody looking for support in the South-east must get the nod of APGA.” http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2010/aug/31/national-31-08-2010-006.htm |
I see that all or the charges have just magically disappeared.no jail no nothing. I swear i hate nigeria as a country.in its current being,it is the most worthful(as far as resources) useless country in africa. ![]() |
ferari90:The story sounds concrete to me. ![]() |
kettykings:Gbam! Igbo or no Igbo. If he has nothing to offer the igbos then he doesn't get our vote. I guess they didnt know they were Igbo when they were taking us out of semi-meaningful positions, not appointing us in meaningful positions during the reshuffle, and not promoting Dora to a high and meaningful position when she deserved it. He's not Igbo, all of us igbos know that its not in our character to act the way he's acting. Quiet and a push-over. Remember he pulled this same stunt during election time with yaradua saying that he is one of us when he came to campaign in the East. Tell GEJ to tell us is real last name and show us that he is Ijaw because I know that dude aint igbo. ![]() |
Mudley313:Thats why Africans are in the position they are in now and the people over here in the west. Most still think like back in the olden days. Whatever they didnt understand they say that its because of spirits now today whenever truth that is "too complicated" for them to understand, they say its conspiracy.Anyways I dont blame yall though. Its just a slave mentality to the West. |
Mudley313:Murtala Mohammed Murtala Mohammed was a Pan-Africanist and his expression of unity of African people were becoming too much. That is something that western countries like the US and britain go out in all means to subdue so they had him assassinated. Yaradua As for Yaradua, Western countries were not comfortable with his non-committal and nonchalant attitude towards them. There was always a mutual suspicion between Yar’Adua and the West. For instance, even though he could have got better healthcare in the West, he was always afraid for his life and therefore sought recourse in the Muslim Arab countries. The last straw for yaradua was putting on sale an oil field that belonged to Exxon-Mobil, a firm with United States interest, with a Chinese company favoured to grab it. The International Federation of Electoral Systems used by America to fund electoral processes in developing nations was immediately asked to pull out of Nigeria. The excuse was that they wanted to concentrate on funding capacity building for civil societies and awareness programmes by the civil societies for the masses. Monies deployed in funding the agitations and protests across the country were funded by them. They were also behind the scandalous reports on Nigeria by the Human Rights Watch and other such international bodies. All these were all aimed at pressing home their drive for regime change. And to do this effectively, a new Executive Director, a former Consular to the U.S. Embassy in Lagos, was appointed for a centre owned by one of Nigeria’s former leaders, purportedly set up for leadership training, to oversee the whole process. That was the beginning of the formation of the G21, an ostensibly Reform Group within the PDP. “Then there was this group fighting for electoral reform, and then the mega party arrangement. Once part of these information leaked, another group was formed to divert attention. If you think the US didnt have a hand in the creation of the PDP zoning agreement then you are mistaking. There is no way they can predict a countries disintegration without having a hand in it. |
Whats new about the US. U should check the real reason why murtala mohammed and yaradua died. ![]() |
Oh now she's Igbo. This is a bunch of Bullshyt, She is Ijaw and she is from Okrika. All of a sudden she is from Igboland when this guy really needs votes. I guess her name isn't patience anymore it's ndidi. Get the crap out of here.Your not Igbo. First that bastard IBB wants to play the igbo card with the war and his wife, now jonathan is doing the same thing. ![]() |
Giyaz:Now you see that IBB coming back in power will be becuse of the North and SW no be Igbo. Look at that betraying bastard edwin clark, he never had any intentions other than to screw the Igbo in 2015. Now you see why igbos dont trust ijaws. Everybody might as well welcome IBB as our new president. because of edwin clark, GEJ is for damn sure not getting SE support. |
IBB cautions Obasanjo Monday, 30 August 2010 04:48 Nigerian Compass • Gbolarumi blasts ex-President over Jonathan’s endorsement • Nigeria’s unity at risk if President runs, says Atiku • Tafida tipped to head Jonathan’s campaign group • Police stop ex-minister’s reception in Akwa Ibom FORMER Military President and presidential aspirant in the 2011 elections, General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd), yesterday reacted to last weekend’s reported endorsement of President Goodluck Jonathan by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors and leaders in the South-West geopolitical zone with an appeal to former President Olusegun Obasanjo to maintain neutrality in the 2011 presidential contest for now. Babangida, in a statement by the Director, Media and Communications of his campaign organisation, Prince Kassim Afegbua in Abuja, pointed out that it is too early for anyone to start predicting who will win the presidential ticket of the PDP, when the primary is yet to take place. He stated that the reported endorsement of Jonathan, who has not even declared his intention to run, has defeated the earlier neutrality position of Obasanjo on the choice of aspirants. “As one of the leaders of the party, a former President and elder statesman, we expect that his word should be his bond,” declared Babangida. The Babangida Presidential Campaign Organisation informed the PDP members and would-be delegates to the 2010 presidential primaries of the party that it is too early in the day for anyone to declare the results of an election that has not been held. The statement reads in part: “The IBB Presidential Campaign Organisation wishes to inform her teeming party members and would-be delegates to the 2010 Presidential primaries of the Peoples’ Democratic Party that it is too early in the day for anyone to declare the results of an election that has not been held, let alone determine who holds the ace. “The reported endorsement of the undeclared intention of President Goodluck Jonathan by the South-West PDP and non-PDP members does not reflect the actual permutations on ground. “The South-West is no doubt a politically sophisticated and enlightened zone, comprising distinguished Nigerians who are well familiar and at home with the political dynamics of the country. “It is, therefore, unlikely that such distinguished, enlightened, civilized and politically-conscious people would reportedly concede to the endorsement of an aspirant that has neither declared nor made public his intentions. We suspect that someone is trying to be smart by half. “Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, who is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of our great party, has repeatedly said that he and other party chieftains would maintain their neutrality to all aspirants, but would exercise their right to vote at the primaries for an aspirant of their choice. “The recent reported endorsement of President Goodluck Jonathan, who has not declared his intention to run, defeats the earlier neutrality position of former President Olusegun Obasanjo on the choice of aspirants. “As one of the leaders of the party, a former President and elder statesman, we expect that his word should be his bond. “We will not be drawn into any argument with those who easily suspect the political moves of former President Obasanjo, but we insist that a true leader should stand by his word. “The reported claim that President Jonathan has 18 states backing him and IBB having 12 states does not hold water. Those figures are not only disputable but unrealistic in view of the fact that most incumbent State Governors, have not declared their position. “It is therefore too early in the day for any political observer to draw conclusions on that basis particularly on a delegate election that is about to commence except that the public is being made to understand that the forthcoming elections, despite repeated assurances of credibility, would go the way of other previous elections. “We believe very strongly that former President General Ibrahim Babangida remains a major contender thus far amongst those who have boldly declared their intentions under the platform of our dear party, the PDP. “We wish to reassure our overwhelming supporters and followers nationwide to be steadfast and committed in their usual spirit and love for our aspirant; General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida. “There is no doubt in our minds that General Ibrahim Babangida enjoys enormous popularity across the geopolitical divides in the country. “As a bridge builder and one who has a long history of sustained relationship with a wide array of Nigerians of all classes, he remains the best choice for President in 2011, hence we plead with our would-be delegates across the country to accord him support by voting for him at the primaries. “Given the sophistication of the South-West, we are of the belief that the delegates would express their preference for General IBB to any other aspirant bearing in mind that the issue of zoning is one principle that cannot be ignored. “We should consider the future of our country and the enormous advantages of sustaining zoning which ultimately is the best deal for the protection of minority interest.” Meanwhile, less than 48 hours after the endorsement of Jonathan for the 2011 presidential race by stakeholders of the PDP in the South-West geopolitical zone, a former Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Alhaji Hazeem Gbolarumi, has criticised the decision, saying it was unfortunate that Obasanjo spearheaded it. Gbolarumi, while addressing reporters yesterday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, carpeted Obasanjo for what he described as “an ungodly venture” in view of the existing zoning arrangement of the PDP, which gave the former President the ticket to rule for eight years. The ex-governor, who doubles as Babangida’s South-West Zonal Campaign Coordinator for the 2011 elections, pointedly accused Obasanjo of forcing his wish down the throat of the South-West people, stressing that “if the move is unchecked now, it is capable of re-enacting Chief Obasanjo’s infamous ‘do or die’ politics of 2007, which largely contributed to the sham elections in the era”. While stressing that Babangida would win in the geopolitical zone and by extension the presidential election come next year, Gbolarumi urged Obasanjo to act like an elder statesman and provide a level playing ground for all the aspirants in line with the recent position of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the PDP. Gbolarumi, an aide of the late strongman of Ibadan politics, Chief Lamidi Adedibu, added: “The people who made the decision to endorse Jonathan for the 2011 Presidency are on their own and their position does not represent the true wish of the people of the South-West.” He described Obasanjo as a father and senior citizen who at his age should always refrain from anything capable of heating up the polity, or causing unhealthy rivalry. According to him, Babangida, like Jonathan and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who is also eyeing the Presidency, should be given a level playing ground in an attempt to evolve and entrench good democratic culture in the nation’s body politic. The former deputy governor then urged the Yoruba to forgive and forget the alleged misdeeds of Babangida, especially the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential elections, believed to have been won by the late business mogul, Bashorun Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola. Although Gbolarumi noted that the Yoruba tradition does not give room for the younger ones to cast aspersions on the elders, he was, however, quick to add that Obasanjo‘s eight-year administration was not particularly beneficial to the race, especially if the level of decay of Federal roads in the South-West is anything to go by. All the problems bedeviling Nigeria as a nation, he noted, would get the attention of Babangida, if given another chance to fix them, stressing that the ex-military ruler is a detribalised Nigerian who has the answers to the nation’s unemployment, decay infrastructure, youth restiveness, power supply, food security and the general welfare of the masses. Also at the weekend, the Turaki Vanguard (TV), one of the political groups working for the presidential aspiration of Atiku in 2011 declared that the nation’s unity and peace could be jeopardised should Jonathan run for the Presidency next year. The group, which spoke through its National Coordinator, Mr. Oladimeji Fabiyi, while receiving the North-East Coordinator of the TV, enjoined Jonathan to ignore the various calls on him to contest and respect the zoning principle as entrenched in the constitution of the PDP. A statement by the Director, Media and Public Affairs of Vanguard, Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, quoted Fabiyi as saying that the calls on the President to contest were not genuine, as they were coming from selfish people who are looking for what they can benefit. Fabiyi added: “We are now very comfortable that President Jonathan, being a gentleman, will not endanger the peace and unity of our country by respecting not only the zoning principle as enshrined in the constitution of our great party, but will ignore the calls of those that don’t wish him well by not contesting the party primaries, knowing the damage such a step will bring on his name, the peace and unity of our dear country. “The fact remains that it will be foolhardy and suicidal, if he goes ahead to participate as we know the futility of such an exercise and we will do our best not only to dissuade Mr. President from such a calamitous step in order to safe and preserve his integrity as a respected leader of our country. “We will mobilise all Nigerians to save the nation from unprepared and unwilling President being lured into power by some selfish leaders who do not know the damage such an act will bring on our dear country. “We will use the same strategy that we used to thwart the unholy ambition of General Olusegun Obasanjo in his life Presidency plot to save Nigerians once again from a plot that will endanger our corporate existence as a nation if he decides to run. “Let me, for the avoidance of doubt, state that the Turaki Vanguard was revived this time around just to save the integrity of Mr. President and save the nation from a step that may endanger her unity and progress should Mr. President decide to answer the calls of non-existing pressure groups and some selfish Nigerian leaders pilling pressure on him to contest in order to extract funds from the system for their belly. “We are also back in order to assist the leadership of the PDP to be a proper democratic institution as envisaged by the founding fathers of the party and to guarantee an eight-year tenure for the South, instead of the four-year tenure Jonathan’s leadership will bring to the South if he succeeds to thwart the constitution of the party that brought him to power.” Investigation has also revealed that the choice of Ambassador Dalhatu Tafida as the Director-General of the campaign organisation of Jonathan, which has caused ripples among the Goodluck Supporters, is actually the brain-child of Obasanjo and former chairman of the PDP BOT, Chief Tony Anenih. A source in the organisation confirmed this to the Nigerian Compass at the weekend. The source said the duo agreed on Tafida because of his experience and to give a Muslim backing to Jonathan’s ambition. Although Obasanjo and Anenih had fallen apart about four years ago, this is the first time it could be said that they are agreeing on an issue. The duo had walked on different paths over the leadership of the National Assembly in 2007 and that of the PDP in 2008. While it was alleged that Obasanjo who took over the chairmanship of the PDP BOT from Anenih under controversial circumstances had worked for David Mark to become the Senate President, Anenih supported the former governor of Benue State, Senator George Akume. Also in 2008, it was alleged that Obasanjo supported former governor of Ebonyi State, Dr. Sam Egwu, to clinch the national chairmanship seat of the PDP, while Anenih reportedly supported Egwu’s arch rival, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim for the seat. The emergence of Prince Vincent Ogbulafor through the support of the PDP governors settled the struggle between the two men to take over the soul of the PDP at that time. But now, sources said the duo unreservedly voted for Tafida to lead Jonathan’s campaign team for the 2011 presidential election. Tafida, who is currently Nigeria ’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom (UK) was a two-time Senator. He was in the Senate from 1999 to 2007, representing one of the senatorial seats in Kaduna State and was the Senate Leader from 2003 to 2007 before he was appointed an Ambassador. However, some supporters of the President have kicked against the nomination of Tafida. According to them, it will act as a setback to Jonathan’s presidential ambition. Said one of the supporters: “Tafida is of the old order. If we are serious about changing the lives of our people, personalities like Tafida should not be in a position of influence. Besides, the man is not healthy to drive a rigorous and energy-sapping campaign like that of a President and be expected to deliver. We have vibrant young men who are very articulate, passionate and are already doing a fantastic job on Project Jonathan 2011.” Meanwhile, the police in Akwa Ibom State at the weekend botched a planned civic reception organised for former Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and 2011 governorship aspirant in the state, Senator John Akpan Udoedeghe. The ceremony was planned by the Positive Change, the campaign organisation of the ex-minister, and it was scheduled to hold at the Government School, Afaha Offot, Uyo, the state capital. It was to be followed yesterday with a thanksgiving service at the Sacred Heart Church, Aka Road, Uyo. It was gathered that the idea behind the civic reception and thanksgiving service was for Udoedeghe’s supporters to renew their loyalty and support for his governorship ambition, as well as express gratitude to God for exonerating him from allegations of conspiracy in the murder in June, this year, of a PDP chieftain, the late Chief Paul Inyang. The deceased was killed by gunmen suspected to be hired assassins, while attending a church service at the Ebenezer African Church, Mbierebe Akpawat, in Ibesikpo Local Government Area of the state. Governor Godswill Akpabio and the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ogbonna Onovo had respectively paid a condolence visit to the family of the deceased. The former FCT junior minister is alleged to have been involved in Inyang’s murder and was accordingly arrested, detained and quizzed by the Police Force Headquarters, Abuja. He has, however, been granted bail while police investigations are still on. Among dignitaries who were expected at the civic reception was the immediate past governor of the state and member of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), Chief Victor Attah. However, the event could not hold at the venue earmarked for it, as armed policemen with Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) barricaded all the entrances to the venue, a situation, which led to the relocation of the event to the private residence of the ex-minister. The thanksgiving service was also postponed indefinitely. In a statement issued after the aborted event, the Chairman, Publicity and Media Sub-Committee of the Positive Change, Chief Thomas Akpan, accused the police in the state of denying them their fundamental human right of lawful assembly. The statement reads in part: “We have been denied police protection/coverage and prevented from holding a reception in any public place in Akwa Ibom State. The reception has been misconstrued as a political rally. “On that basis, the planned thanksgiving at the Sacred Heart Church, Aka Road, Uyo, earlier slated for Sunday 29th August, 2010 has been postponed. “As a law-abiding political organisation where members and supporters are taught to respect the authority, we accept the decision of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command. “We have decided to act in this manner to safeguard and protect the lives of all our supporters from any harm. However, we wish to note that in a democracy, every citizen has inalienable rights and that might is not right”. But, the state Police Commissioner, Mr. Walter Rugbere, explained in a telephone interview with the Nigerian Compass that his men stopped the event, because the organisation did not apply for police permit to hold it at the venue. Rugbere said that security reports reaching him indicated that Udoedeghe and his supporters were going to organise a rally to celebrate his purported exoneration from the murder case, adding that the police had to take proactive steps to stop the event because the case was still being investigated by the Force CID. His words: “We had to stop the event because they did not ask for police permit to hold a reception to celebrate a case that was still under the investigation of the Force CID in Abuja. He is alleged to have been involved in the killing of late Inyang and he has not yet been cleared. He was only granted bail. “We said since the case was still under investigation by the Force CID, the police would not allow him celebrate over what is still under investigation. We asked him to hold the event in his house and we provided police protection.” By Lateef Ibrahim, Johnchuks Onuanyim, Abuja, Ademola Babalola, Ibadan & Anthony Bassey, Uyo http://www.compassnewspaper.com/NG/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=66566:ibb-cautions-obasanjo&catid=672:top-stories&Itemid=794 |
