irisher: You're absolutely right, a lot of people want to setup an industry on that axis because of its proximity to Onitsha and the much availability of lands on that area. But the problem here is that the road is yet to be dualised. From the boundary bridge between Nsugbe and Umueri down to Aguleri Junction will be filled with Industries once the road is dualised. This road dualisation will also uplift the face of the newly Ikenga Umueri International market that's currently under construction.
Apart from opening the area for tourism due to the massive beaches along the axis as well as new industrial estates, the area also holds the key to maximum food production in Anambra. As that area lies along the shore of the River Niger.
One of Obiano’s greatest achievements was translating his love for rice production into tangible steps to prioritize and kickstart the commercial rice revolution in Anambra state through attracting massive private sector investment in commercial rice farming. To the extent of making Anambra a leading rice producing state in Nigeria today.
One also prays that Soludo’s agricultural agenda will prioritize another area where Anambra has huge comparative advantage. Such as fish production due to abundance of big rivers in the state. Like Obiano did to achieve rice revolution, Soludo could try to attract private investors in commercial fish production to drive development of integrated commercial fish farms along the axis. This will create massive jobs and wealth as well as turn Anambra into a leading fish producing location in West and Central Africa.
Unbiased1: Nothing concern me with Lagos, I don't care what happens in Eko Atlantic. Our focus should be on making Igbo land the number 1 choice destination in Nigeria. If the Federal Government is marginalizing the South East, the Igbo people should not also marginalize themselves by starving their land of investments. If more Igbo men move their business headquarters to Igbo land, it will attract more investors, both local and foreign. Forget about investing in any Ibeno and focus on Igbo land. A South African business man once built a luxury resort with an artificial lake in South Africa. There is nothing we can't achieve in Igbo land. Stop advicing Ndigbo to move their top tourism investments to other parts of Nigeria, try to learn from history.
I pray that God gives southeast governors the eye to see where their potential for greatness truly lies.
One key road that I thought Soludo would immediately pursue was the dualization of the GRA Onitsha - Nsugbe junction road as well as linking the road with a new road to the Anambra international airport. Apart from reducing traffic congestion in that area, the new airport road would not only provide a short alternative route to the airport from Onitsha GRA and 33 area, it is also the fastest developing residential and industrial hub in the state.
Again if the 33 to Aguleri road were dualized a bit just to the Nkwelle junction, it would strengthen that whole axis as a great alternative for our people seeking to set up industries in accessible industrial estates the south east.
As long as the INEC crooks are left intact and the fantastically corrupt Judiciary is allowed to turn the laws upside down to defend INEC’s criminality, 2027 will be a mere repetition of 2023.
The same machinery used to foist Tinubu on Nigerians will work exactly the same way it did in 2023. Nigerians must wake up to the fact that we no longer have a democracy
Nothing we can do now. We have to go through this storm and naira will finally stabilize at some point.
What we are observing are the fruits of mindless borrowing and printing of money that was the hallmark of Buhari's regime. Unfortunately, these things take time to manifest and Tinubu is the unlucky guy in power when the effects of those economic crimes by Buhari are now manifesting.
Bebigiby1: In the past few weeks Nigerians have been inundating with calls from IMF (International Monetary Fund) to devalue naira and remove all subsidies including electricity subsidy…. Those foreigners running IMF enjoy stable economy and several government subsidies in their respective countries but are bent on destroying Nigeria’s economy by pressurizing the government to remove all subsidies and implement draconian policies that will further destabilize Nigeria’s economy. They grant the corrupt Nigerian government greek loans that they know will be looted so as to gain influential economic power over Nigeria’s economy. It’s indeed unfortunate that several IMF’s economic advice to the government has played a major role to the terrible state of Nigeria’s economy and the government appears helpless as it implements IMF wishes without looking inwards for local solutions on how to boost Nigeria’s manufacturing and local productive sectors. It is glaring that the insatiable taste of Tinubu for foreign loans that will be looted by the malicious APC government may eventually destroy this country if nothing is done by Nigerians to hold this government accountable. Foreign organizations like IMF don’t mean well for Nigeria as it is obviously clear that they want to destroy Nigeria’s economy. It is time for Nigeria to cut ties with IMF and look inwards to solve it’s economic crisis. As a nation, Nigerians must rise above tribal and religious sentiments for genuine progress to be achieved. What must be done to heal our land is to dissolve this incompetent evil Tinubu APC government and restructure the country’s political landscape to a decentralized government system where states/regions control 100% of it’s resources.
If we didn't know better we would think Tinubu was the President responsible for the most debt and printing of naira.
Meanwhile, the real culprit of today's disasters in the Nigerian economy (Mohammadu Buhari) still walks free enjoying his loot.
Politicians that asked Nigerians to send more dollars from abroad, turned around to hide their own dollars! Even the CBN has not enforced a fair exchange rate with the IMTOs to encourage Nigerians in diaspora to send money via official means. Instead of asking people to pay x amount into their naira account and they would pay x amount into their dollar account abroad. These transactions would not be necessary if the IMTOs were forced by the CBN to ensure a daily fair exchange rate for Nigerians in diaspora. Thus ultimately less foreign currency is remitted to Nigeria due to people realizing that the IMTOs exchange rate is highly unfair and designed to rip them off.
Also, In many cases, our politicians even converted the little naira in their savings accounts into dollars too. Further making dollars scarce and driving up the exchange rate.
It is clear to everyone now that CBN does not have the capacity to indefinitely defend the naira through making dollars to flood the market and available more than the high demand for it. So the inevitable fate of the naira is imminent.
The same Fulani now plotting a coup against Tinubu under the guise of “hardship “ protest were the same people who kept mute while Buhari ruined the Nigerian economy through printing over #30 trillion naira and borrowing more than $100 billion dollars!
Tinubu isn’t a magician to reverse Buhari’s 8 years of disaster on the Nigerian economy. As clueless as Tinubu appears, at least he isn’t just taking foreign loans for salaries and consumption as Buhari did. Let us give Tinubu some time to clear the mess created by Buhari whom most of these people dragging Tinubu right now turned a blind eye to Buhari’s disastrous economic policies.
We should just print as much naira as we need and distribute to every one living in Nigeria. Yes it might temporarily cause more inflation but at least hardship is less.
If dollars rate rises, we should just print more naira to buy us as much dollars as we want. Over time, everyone will have enough naira to buy dollars at any rate where we find it. Just print more naira faster than the rate of dollars rise. Then use the naira to buy up all the dollars in the market.
bennybuhari: [s]Tunji Shelle, a former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos, says the directive by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on cybersecurity levy is another way of exploiting Nigerians.
On May 6, the CBN directed deposit money banks in the country to start charging a 0.5 percent cybersecurity levy on electronic transactions, in line with the Cybercrime Act 2024 as amended.
Speaking with TheCable, the retired navy captain says President Bola Tinubu and his appointees are insensitive to the plight of the masses.
Shelle added that it is worrisome that Nigerians who are going through the hardship of subsidy removal, hunger, and fuel scarcity, are being told that certain amounts will be deducted from their bank accounts when they make transactions.
“I am not surprised by the announcement by the CBN because Nigerians have always been exploited by this government. They have no regards or feelings for the common man at all and they don’t care if the poor continue to get poorer,” he said.
“The man who has N50,000 in his account, is that somebody you should levy cybersecurity fee upon? A man who is earning N30,000 minimum wage and is wondering how he will survive until month end, is that the man you still want to tax cybersecurity levy? These people are just so insensitive to the plight of Nigerians.
“It is very easy for someone to say, how much is 0.5 percent? But what they are thinking about is the cumulative amount they will realise from the cybersecurity levy.
“By the time, they collect these 0.5 percent levy from all Nigerians, including the poor masses, it goes into billions of naira.
“They will spend the money lavishly and use it to renovate the national assembly and share the remaining among themselves. The masses will benefit nothing from the amount generated from the levy. We have never had it so bad.”
Shelle added that the Tinubu administration has achieved very little in one year.
“With all the amount used to renovate the national assembly, the lawmakers are even still complaining because a poor job was done,” he added.
“I think people with good conscience should resign from this administration and go and beg God for forgiveness. That is the only thing that can save this country.
“Only gullible Nigerians will continue to see Tinubu as a messiah and man of hope. I can’t pinpoint what he has done for the average Nigerian.
ebufa: True words my brother...........Nobody is coming to save Alaigbo aside her own children! I like the way Soludo and Alex otti are gradually changing the narrative............by the time the road dualization of Amawbia - Ekwuluobia and Nnewi - Amawbia is completed the metamorphosis of Anambra will be clear even to the blind!
Ndigbo sometimes act like lunatics who consider profit above every other risks. That is why they are always easily targeted and exploited because it is obvious to Nigeria that Igbos will never be tactful or make any wise decision once they see the possibility of making a tiny profit. It is madness to always prioritize profits in every decision. Even foreign investors know that Nigeria is profitable, but they also know that it is a very dangerous place. So they will not risk their lives to invest in a place where there could be profit, but you may be targeted by kidnapers and likely die from it or some other fruits of insecurity.
Truth be said, Igbos should truly consider their states! If they have $1 million to invest, they should invest $500k in a similar venture in their region and the other $500k into lagos or wherever they like. If that Lagos one goes bust eventually, they will never be poor again as their $500k insurance backup plan in the southeast will continue to grow slowly and bigger eventually. Chief Sunny Odogwu built the Grand Hotel Resort Asaba when Asaba was a mere little town! he could have built it in Lagos if he only considered profit as the sole consideration in a business decision! But, a typical Igbo person will gamble his entire $1 million in a risky investment and likely lose it all. If Obudu Cattle ranch were owned by an Igboman, he would build it in Lagos and not the village of Obudu where it is located. Their obsession with "Lagos" is like a spiritual curse.
In the 1970s, Igbos saw living in Lagos as something akin to living abroad. Today we know that many Igbos in Lagos have absolutely nothing. i still wonder why they act as though it is still 1970s when Lagos was Nigeria's capital and the only place with an international airport in Nigeria. Moreover, Nigeria has become so highly divided that Igbos are now openly viewed unfavorably in most places even in Lagos!
hammer567: He was always going to gradually erect skyscrapper there.
He may still find another beach to start again too.
He loves the beach life.
LOL.... what is he still waiting for? HE SHOULD BUILD THE TOWER AND WATCH IT COME DOWN TOO! He is still playing with Babajide Sanwo-Olu abi? He doesn't know his mates yet.
He wants us to clap for him that his money has not finished after they ruined his business abi? Let him continue being childish with Nigeria. He will learn with time that here is not UK where some court order can save you from their orchestrated strategy to destroy you simply because they don't like where you come from. Nobody is begging these "Lagos Iboes" to be reasonable and mitigate their risky investments by taking some to their home region.
This man should know that there are beaches in Afikpo, Anyamelum and even Oguta where he could build the same resorts. yes, the turnover will be slower initially, but it will eventually grow. At least he would not have to worry every day if the state government is plotting to knock it down after 2 years or not. He will be among the key decision-makers in the state he invests!
If he does not think the water sports he desires would be adequate, he could then just negotiate with states needing a standard 4 or 5 star hotel in prime locations. Such as the Onitsha Hotel or the Awka ICC hotel. Even an average 4 -5 floors hotel in these locations will fetch him something while he pursues other risky investments in Ogun or Katsina.
Let them keep dragging other people's land and wasting their money on build and it's destroyed in a few years. As if they are people under a curse of blood money that would never yield any good for them.
We need abide shaker to shake the rate. But on a serious note, more printing of naira is going on and government officials are taking the printed naira to the nearest bureau de change to convert their printed notes into stable hard currency.
This new habit of constantly converting naira into hard currencies needs to stop to reduce the demand for foreign currency in Nigeria.
afube: Competent contractors are not all as expensive as Julius Berger......Craneburg is good and Arab contractors are cheaper than JB. There are certain roads you cannot give out to these 2 for a penny contractors Soludo is using! Soludo has lost 2 years fumbling with these quacks...he has 12 months to redeem himself!
Keep deluding yourself. Do you think it is water that International construction companies based in Lagos and Abuja will use in deploying their equipment to the site? If we are talking about a very difficult road in a swampy area or major bridges, then of course it makes sense to call Julius Berger if there are no cheaper alternatives. You silly people are just pained that Soludo has continued to perform.
The good thing is that Soludo is doing unscheduled inspections and ensuring that non-performing contractors are removed from the project.
See the quality of Soludo's roads, not even the federal roads have this thickness of cement stone base. So you can continue telling lies, people know their governor is performing extremely well. Go and hug a transformer if you are pained.
Ezewuzie01: . Soludo is not serious. I don't know what he thinks he gains by playing to the gallery. Governments around the world are rated by their efficiency and quality of service delivery. These roads were among the very first roads he awarded immediately he was sworn in. That's almost two years of struggling with mere 14km roads. Shameful. Where is his commissioner for works? Why should the governor be the one moving around ascertaining the quality of roads when he has a commissioner for works who is a so-called engineer and is paid for doing nothing? It is either the commissioner for works is a thief or is grossly incompetent. Either way he should be fired or we will believe that he is sharing kickbacks with the governor. How will the state government recover its money already paid to the contractor for lousy job done and for time lost? I expected Soludo who is a first class economist to be so much smarter than this display of inefficiency and tardiness that his government has come to be known for. Didn't he know that something like this was going to happen when he awarded road contracts to these quack contractors he is using all over the place? How about using just two or three well-known reputable contractors and award them bulk road projects for which they will surely offer your government a discount and you can also rest assured that they will give you a quality finishing? This one year, one road government that Soludo is leading calls to question his competence to lead a government. I am beginning to think being highly educated does not always translate to being a competent administrator. Soludo has been disappointing so far. What he has offered so far doesn't show he has capacity to do exceptionally well. He can start redeeming himself by using only good contractors like RCC, Nigercat, CCECC and let them turn Onitsha, Obosi, Nkpor, Ogidi, Awka, Nnewi, Ekwulobia and our urban areas into a massive construction site, not this story of dubai-taiwan he is always telling and yet people are seeing squalor and incompetence everywhere. Let him borrow if necessary. Ndi Anambra won't mind as long as they see the borrowed funds in action.
Mad people everywhere.
Why are you avoiding mentioning Julius Berger to construct all the streets in Anambra state?
Meanwhile, your type would NEVER pay even 0ne kobo in taxes! Yet, you are the first to recommend that the most fiscally reckless methods of achieving development be used in Anambra.
If you want to build your village house and Julius Berger charges you N1 billion naira to build a three-bedroom bungalow, while a Nigerian contractor charges you 40 million naira for the same house, you will judiciously use the Nigerian contractor because you know there are no special equipment needed to build a village bungalow.
But if it is government money, like Tinubu, you believe resources are INFINITE, or rather you can just print more money without consequences on the economy. Therefore government should just continue spending and borrowing more money for more wasteful expenditures on using Julius Berger to simply tar internal streets which can be done very well with simple construction equipment of Nigerian contractors.
ANSMEDIA: Updates on some rural roads across Anambra. Cities, towns and villages are all getting attention all at once . God continue to bless Anambra with good leadership
Gradually but surely, Soludo is implementing his vision. I love that he isn't giving excuses or wailing over money. Even though I know the economic crunch will be hitting him too. But, he is focused on doing his best.
I wish he would visit some of his road projects more often. That will not just keep the contractors on their toes, but will also draw media attention to his projects for those saying he isn't doing anything. One great thing about Gov. Otti of Abia is that he visits his project sites daily. So once he pays a contractor, they have NO CHOICE but to hit the ground running and deliver quickly on the project without delaying and waiting for variations in prices to occur.
Meanwhile, I found this wonderful YouTube vlogger (blessingGodwins) based in Anambra. They are a couple and they are committed to driving all over the state to highlight the Governor's projects in the far ends of the state. I love that they say it as they see it. Unlike one cheap propagandist who only finds a way to badmouth everything done by the government and create an impression that it is "bad' in some way.
Please visit this YouTube site and show them so much love!
Unbiased1: Send this video to the federal government, they are the ones in charge of the gas.
GBAM! These people ehh?
Soon, his next post after a few days will be "WHY" he "hates" Soludo because he wouldn't build what a COUNTRY built! Not what a state (Oblast) in Russia did o! But their entire Russian Federal Government built! As if they didn't know Nigeria also has a FEDERAL Government to build such infrastructure like the Russian FEDERAL Government!
The most magical part is that they will NEVER send it to their own state threads. Maka why??
RepoMan007: The 2016 massacre was just a dwellers relocation exercise. You see why Nigeria is 10 steps back and one forward? Because of conquest mentality, they left northern states that are twice the entire 5 SE states in landmass to go kill them and establish a useless ranch.
They had the nerve to ask these massacred people to give up their land for the cows of people that butchered them?? Am I dreaming or is this real?
I know they are planning to stash weapons in that place otherwise just the fear of reprisals would make them think twice about taking the land of people they have murdered
Can Nigeria survive just 5 minutes of the type of sanctions Russia has survived in 2 years?
Even Putin would be regretting the hundreds of thousands of Russians that are now dead plus the massive quantity of equipment damaged. Yet it is not even close to being over. One thing I notice about Nigerians is that they loosely talk about war, yet Nigeria neither has the money for war nor can manufacture even one bullet.
ChimaAdeoye: There are currently two prevailing schools of thought in Igboland: one advocating for a return to our traditional roots and ancient way of living, while the other proposes mimicking Western countries entirely, from methods, infrastructure designs, and ideas to culture.
In my view, the truth lies somewhere between these extremes. There are instances where embracing Western ideas and concepts is beneficial, just as there are times when blindly copying them proves unwise.
Personally, I always consider the cost implications of any proposal. It's essential to weigh the cost-benefit ratio when discussing initiatives. For example, having lived in New York for many years, I witnessed the city complete major projects like flyovers within just 2 or 3 months. Initially, I attributed this efficiency to Nigeria's lack of seriousness until I delved into their budget.
a. The 2024 budget of New York City , is $107 billion , for its 8.5 million residents! For those who don't know, the City of New York is just an LGA in the state of New York. It is like saying the City of Ikeja in Ikeja LGA of Lagos state.
b. Nigeria's 2024 budget , even with all its excesses, amounts to $34 billion for 225 million people.
c.Anambra's 2024 budget is a mere $280 million (#400 billion naira), serving a population of 6-9 million people. To put this into context, the City of New York Fire Department's 2024 budget is $2.3 billion! (i.e. just Fire Brigade funding for New York City is larger than the budget of all north central and southeastern states combined!)
These figures should tell us something when we are proposing ideas about what is obtainable abroad that should be in Nigeria. Unless you pause for a moment to do a cost-benefit analysis, you will be wasting time. Now some proposals are fine, but in a country where almost everything is lacking, you almost wonder what to spend the precious little resources on to drive economic development and what to leave for later. Of course, many Nigerians don't care about these figures because we have lived in a country where politicians do nothing but steal public resources. Yes, these financial figures underscore the critical importance of distinguishing between feasible initiatives that can be adopted without significant financial strain and those that are unrealistic, considering Nigeria's resource constraints and pervasive corruption among politicians. It does not make sense to demand why a starving man is not clean-shaven and did not buy soap to wash his clothes when he has an even greater priority - addressing hunger.
Gov. Soludo is trying his best with the few resources available. Many of us bad-mouthing him from the sidelines cannot perform what he is doing if we are made governors now. Of course, many of them have never forgiven him for the regrettable letters he wrote at the early stages of his administration. I also tongue-lashed Soludo all over social media including sending him tweets demanding why he should distract himself with national politics, especially after the second letter. Instead of facing the enormous work he was elected to do for the Anambra people. But if Peter Obi himself came out and hugged Soludo, and asked us to forgive the argument among brothers, why should we hold on to that grudge and therefore refuse to acknowledge the good that Soludo has been doing since then?
My brother, thank you! Actually, you cannot be sure about the agenda of these faceless people. I suspect they are APC agents targeting the heart of Igboland.
Imo state is by far the richest state in the southeast by FAAC allocations. Yet, Imo state has ONLY Owerri and to a lesser extent Orlu and Okigwe as urban centers to develop. Yet nobody hounds Hope Uzodinma to ensure he builds underground drainages even in villages or along Federal expressways. Even though most of these Onitsha-based vloggers doing videos of Anambra every day are actually from Imo state! They never clamor about even basic roads to be provided by Uzodinma, but they are demanding infrastructure in America or Lagos and Abuja to be built by Anambra government which is barely in the top 20 states by FAAC monthly allocation despite its over population problems due to being a center of commerce attracting immigrants from all over Nigeria! I don't know if you can see the double standards here. Meanwhile, other states that receive way more than what Anambra receives are not even harrassed to merely patch up potholes in the few streets in their tiny state capitals that aren't even as populated as Nnewi!
Now, unlike Imo state, Anambra is grappling to simultaneously develop about 6 major cities (Awka, Onitsha, Nnewi, Ihiala, Aguleri, and Ekwulobia). Not to mention other big towns such as Umunze, Ukpor, Atani, Nsugbe, Nteje etc! It has issues of unplanned and irregular development taking place in random locations and it simply lacks the funds to put proper roads and infrastructure in all these locations to prevent them from becoming slums. Everyone can see that Soludo's infrastructural agenda is statewide and not solely about making the state capital a befitting model city. Therefore, it requires a very astute deployment of resources to impact the entire state with the few resources compared to the problems.
I can only tell you to always remember that some of these people are merely looking for a way to create a narrative that either nothing is happening in Anambra, or to claim that whatever was achieved was substandard. i am glad that some people like SpaceTour give them a good run for their pittance paid by APC.
Acidosis: I like to believe that the whole idea is to restrict speculative activities and potentially stabilize the Naira. However, for every 1 potential benefit of this policy, there are at least 5 brutal consequences.
If this policy backfires lasan! Kai! But lets stay optimistic.
Right now the biggest source of dollars into the economy is through overseas remittances from Nigerians abroad. So why introduce a discarded idea that even Lamido Sanusi noted that it reduced forex flow through remittances? If he blocks the steady flow of dollars into the economy through the failed policy, he will only open the gate for other operators who would transfer into your naira account at 1,410 if you transfer into their Bank of America account. Everybody took that option because then the money transfer agencies would pay something like 800 or 900 naira to the dollar and still charge you a transfer fee. But the other transfer people will cost you nothing as you merely transfer through Xelle to their Bank of America account and they credit your naira account immediately! Nobody likes wasting money, so once you need to make the transfer, you call them and make the agreed sum and they will credit your naira account instantly. The only thing is that you will know that the dollars would probably go to India or Pakistan instead of Nigeria.
I just wonder why Tinubu would also want to stifle forex inflow by Nigerians in the diaspora by introducing hurdles to make their loved ones get less money. It simply creates all these alternative ways of transfer that in the end, the dollars never make it to Nigeria again. Anyway, they should continue bulldozing Nigeria and experimenting on discarded ideas that turned out to hurt the economy, until the people will wake up.
Seems CBN has quietly re-introduced their policy where people abroad can no longer send foriegn currency directly to folks in Nigeria. Folks in Nigeria now can only receive the naira equivalent of the money sent.
I've checked Western Union and seems to be the same as well. Moneygram still allows dollars to be sent, but can only be picked up. Can't send to a dorm account any more.
I have checked and haven't seen any news on this.
In this day and age when you can contact people in America via WhatsApp, they are bringing back this policy that stopped dollar remittances into Nigeria. They have just opened business again for those who would ask you to give them the dollars in America and then they will transfer the agreed naira equivalent to your loved ones in Nigeria.
Ultimately, Nigeria loses on the dollars her people would have sent into Nigerian banks. The dollars remain abroad while the people in Nigeria who need dollars to fund their accounts abroad are merely asked to pay naira into an account in Nigeria and they will credit your account in China! So the dollars never enter Nigeria.
Purehuman: Our level of education in Nigeria is sorely lacking and needs a proper upgrade. There is no reason that we should keep open gutters. There are designs currently that will help in removing silts and prevent scenarios like this. We build the most basic infrastructures in the east without paying attention to different designs all over the world that will not cost you an extra coin. We must understand that we live in temperate regions where mosquitos, other insects and micro-organisms will kill us if we do not try our best to curb it now. For crying out loud, we are in 2024 and we are supposed to look at these things as old and should no longer feature in our state again.
It is easy to cite Americans, Japanese, or Germans as the people we should copy. But you fail to also copy their BEHAVIOR / MINDSET! No American, German, or Japanese would take trash from their homes and dump it in the street or into drainage gutters hoping the flood would carry the trash to the River Mississippi. That is the underlying difference between the people who live in those countries and the behavior of our people! If you take Nigerians to America and bring Americans to Nigeria, in less than 2 years, they will make our cities look sparkling clean with flowers and trees all over, while we would make New York and Los Angeles look like piggeries with decaying trashing filled gutters and underground drainage seeping out sewage onto the streets. That my friend is the DIFFERENCE! Our people are still getting accustomed to the tenets of modern city life. Unfortunately, previous governments paid zero attention to environmental sanitation, so our people assume that it is perfectly okay to litter and pollute their environment as much as possible. So long as they sweep inside of their homes. The exterior can be a pile of trash and nobody cares.
If someone hears you talking like this they would think you are the type that does not throw trash on the street or properly bag your refuse and drive to authorized places to dispose of them. Or they would believe that you will gladly pay taxes without being chased around. An average American or German would do these things on their own without waiting for the government to chase them around before doing the right thing!
The problem with most of you is MINDSET! Nigerians are the most difficult people to govern and Igbos have learned and imbibed that recalcitrant attitude. Imagine that people asked to stop trading on the street and blocking the free flow of traffic would return to the same spot immediately after the enforcement team moved to another location. Until the enforcement team returns with clubs and begins to damage their wares to forcefully make them comply! There is a total disregard for the laws and norms of a sane society.
The issue is not the absence of ideas for Tinubu. The issue is the RELUCTANCE to cut the wasteful cost of government. So no matter what anyone says, they will keep spending the money on themselves while the nation suffers.
christejames: I love this new competition Soludo has staged amongst landlords across the state...
Paint your house, beautify it with trees and keep the street clean to win up to 5 million naira.
Good initiative!
This should be sustained annually. To give a cash price to any landlord with the best-beautified surrounding of their house with flowers, trees and a clean street with drainage gutters.
To be fair enough, the competition should be in two categories.
1. Landlords of the cleanest private homes. (Inside the compound and exterior street beyond their fence) - N5 million naira 2. Landlord of the best commercial building. (Inside the compound and exterior street beyond their fence) - N7 million naira.
This will be a fantastic way of getting people to repaint their houses and beautify their environment.
abuzz33: Anambra residents lament open defecation, refuse, fear disease outbreak 1st February 2024
Anambra By Ikenna Obianeri
Residents and pedestrians along the Onitsha-Owerri Expressway and its environs have lamented the continued open defecation and indiscriminate refuse disposal near medians of the roads, particularly the Upper Iweka axis.
Findings by South-East PUNCH showed that the trend had become rampant as miscreants, traders, and hawkers defaced the road median and other places undergoing construction, with faeces and heaps of refuse, thereby causing pedestrians who cross the expressway to cover their noses.
Our correspondent, who monitored the sanitary situation on the expressways on Monday and Tuesday, observed that the median from Obodoukwu, Upper Iweka, Down-fly and parts of Ochanja in Onitsha South Local Government Area of the state had become regular spots for defecation and refuse dumps.
Similarly, along the Awka-Onitsha-Enugu Expressway, it was also observed that indiscriminate open defecation has become a norm, especially in gutters around the UNIZIK Junction, despite the presence of toilet facilities in the area.
Although, the area has a cluster of motor parks, shops and other beehive of commercial activities with insufficient sanitary system, the gutters and open spaces around the area have been defaced with faeces.
Residents and passers-by were seen managing to walk across the road medians and other lanes and going to their various destinations while avoiding the faeces and refuse dumps.
However, pedestrians and residents in the area who raised the alarm that the strong smells that ooze from them are dangerous for personal hygiene, especially as food vendors surround the area and openly display their food items.
South-East PUNCH correspondent gathered that, although, employees of the Anambra State Waste Management Authority come regularly to clear the refuse dumps, but the residents said before the refuse collectors come, the refuse dumps would have increased and thereby causing an eyesore and also hindering free flow of both vehicular and non-vehicular traffics.
While there were concerns about the insufficient number of public toilets along these expressways, South-East PUNCH correspondent on Tuesday sighted some public toilets near the corridors, but they were not being utilised due to the money charged by the operators.
One of the attendants of one of the public toilets along the Onitsha-Owerri road, near Ochanja, who identified herself simply as Ijeoma, said, “The toilet has always been in operation and we charge just N100 for bathing and N200 for the use of the toilet. But while some of them make use of this facility, others choose to go in-between the median to defecate because they don’t want to pay.
“We always tried to prevent that because we understand that a toilet has been provided, but they won’t listen. Sometimes, we go as far as trying to arrest them through the security agencies, but they still continue. You know Onitsha is surrounded by markets and mostly traders, who are by the roadside are the worst offenders of this.”
However, speaking to South-East PUNCH on Tuesday, a resident of Onitsha, Chibuike Ifeanyi, said, “Aside from the embarrassing outlook of the median, the faeces pose a serious health risk to us the residents and the government needs to act now, especially as food vendors openly display their wares right in front of the faeces and the refuse, this is creating room for epidemic.
“This has been going on for a long time and we have made series of complaints, but nothing has been done while these people keep on messing up the place. We are risking diseases such as cholera and dysentery. We cannot pretend as if we do not know the dangers of allowing these unwholesome practices to continue unchallenged.”
Another resident of Awka, identified as Chike, said, “It has always been an eyesore while passing through the UNIZIK junction going to work in the morning. The gutters are always filled with faeces and it constitutes a health hazard. Some of these food hawkers go there to defecate and come back to start selling without washing their hands, it is not a good development.
“The refuse is also another challenge, although, the refuse collectors are trying, but most of the time, they allow the refuse to become an eyesore, causing traffic snarl before they come to evacuate them. I think the best way to manage this refuse is to create a centre for it and not for the people to be dumping it on the road. The relevant authorities should look into the situation.”
A public health expert, who gave her name as Ifeoma Chikere, said, “Until the government starts to arrest those engaging in open defecation, it may continue to occur. We have preached against it several times, but they are not taking us serious because they don’t know that their action is negatively impacting on other people’s lives and well-being.
“I understand there are laws against open defecation, but implementation is the challenge here. Once these offenders are arrested and made to pay a fine, they will begin to have a change of attitude.”
The state Commissioner for Environment, Felix Odimegwu, did not respond to enquiries, when contacted on the development.
However, a top staff in the ministry said the state government would step up enforcement to ensure the perpetrators were apprehended and refuse collectors promptly attend to refuse.
He said, “We are not happy with what we always saw there. We are going to step up enforcement in the next few days. We need to station people there permanently and we are going to pay them. People need to see effective enforcement before they desist from there.”
Expressing dismay over the development, the Managing Director of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority, Osy Onuko, said strict enforcement will apply to offenders of open defection, especially around the UNIZIK Junction, which is regarded as a gateway to Awka, the state capital.
Onuko recounted ACTDA’s persistent efforts in cleaning the areas, and revealed the agency’s latest decision to station some officers of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra Brigade in the area for strict enforcement against such acts henceforth.
It was gathered that the decision was sequel to a petition by a senior citizen in the state, who condemned the act.
Onuko said, “Beyond the sanitisation efforts, ACTDA is set to open up new roads and advise the governor on strategic road development within the capital city. Building upon the success of last year’s palliative initiatives, the commitment to addressing dilapidated roads, eliminating potholes, and sustaining a green and clean campaign underscore the comprehensive approach taken by ACTDA to transform Awka into a model city.”
Long read. The bottom line is that everything has to be done to address the rampant street markets that have taken over every open space along our roads, and also force the approved markets or motor parks to mandatorily provide toilet facilities.
The fight against illegal street markets with makeshift stands popping up everywhere or illegal structures added to legally approved buildings to create appendages for street trading will be a long arduous fight. Only a brave and determined Governor can prevail against these entrenched street traders who don't care any bit about the well-being of society or anyone at all. As long as they are making money trading on the streets and littering the roads and gutters unperturbed. This has got to be addressed if there is any hope of achieving Soludo's clean and green Anambra.
Clowns- VP Shettima knocks Nigerians laughing over depreciating value of the Naira against the dollar Those celebrating on Twitter over exchange rate of Naira against the Dollar are clowns — Nigeria's Vice President Kashim Shettima
It is sad that some Nigerians are celebrating on Twitter that Naira is now N1,500 to a Dollar - VP Shettima
Oga,
Please stop pretending and get serious with your boss! Tell him to adhere to the CBN charter and STOP printing more naira notes! it is fuelling inflation and making our currency lose value. The sad part is that the naira notes are printed abroad! So the white people know exactly the amount of worthless notes our government prints with nothing to back the printed naira notes.
Please address the mindless printing of money and look for serious avenues to improve government resources instead of merely printing money!
