Tata: FG to Ban “Okada” (Commercial Motorcycles) Nationwide
27.10.2014 at 7:49 am By BellaNaija.com 11 Comments
Okada-riders The use of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as “Okada” may soon be banned nationwide, if the federal government approves a proposal made by the National Council on Transport.
The proposal for the ban was introduced at the council’s annual conference in Enugu State, and has been endorsed by the Minister of Transport, Idris Umar, Punch reports.
According to a statement released by the ministry, the ban was one of the measures being proposed to ensure adequate provision of safe and secure means of transportation in the country.
All the state commissioners of transport as well as directors and officials in the federal and state ministries of transport across the country attended the conference. They were all advised by the council to discourage the use of commercial motorcycles in their respective states, and to adopt safer and more efficient transport systems.
Here’s an excerpt from the statement read at the conference:
All states and the Federal Capital Territory have therefore been advised to establish a public transport system that ensure strict regulation of the operation of public passenger transportation system through a well-articulated management system for enhanced safety, security, effective and efficient service delivery
The states are to also develop master plans for the development of intelligent transport system to facilitate the development and management of their transport operations in line with emerging trends and global best practices.
http://www.bellanaija.com/2014/10/27/fg-to-ban-okada-commercial-motorcycles-nationwide/ We shall pass this primitive use of motorcycles as a mass transit tool. it's only a question of time.

investnow2013: 'Phased-Out' is the right word, but not when You cannot replace over half a Million jobs The state is getting from Okada!.Please think about the effects on Industries,Families, govt, Traders, Mechanics etc!. Anambra-State is Nigeria's biggest producer of Motor cycle & Motor cycle components!.Govt should rather at this difficult economic period regulate the Okada transport system instead of a blanket ban!.Job! Jobs!! Job!!!...... Please help to protect peoples jobs!. Bro you have started Nigerian voodoo statistics. Nigeria is the only country on earth where people quote numbers out of the sky and if they use the number twice, it becomes "official" Abeg, how did you come about half a million okada jobs? Anambra recent voters registration showed the state had 1.7 million eligible voters above 18 years. Now, i can tell you that 50% of those are young people in universities etc. If roughly 800 thousand are people with jobs, it means 500 thousand of that will be okada jobs? Thus, 62% of all Anambra jobs are okada related? Bro, i beg to differ! Okada is an anomaly which should be phased out. These were legacies of the period of military regime when our city roads were allowed to completly collapse. We are not asking for okada riders to leave, we are asking them to upgrade into keke napep, which will creat more wealth for them as well as keep their passengers safe. If states which had no taxis at all such as all northern Nigeria states, Ebonyi and Akwa Ibom can phase out okada for keke napep, i don't know why Anambra cannot. Even Enugu,Imo,Delta,Edo,Akwa Ibom,Cross River,Rivers, etc have all phased out the primitive use of motorcycles for mass transit, why not Anambra?? This issue is one of the great indictments of Peter Obi's lack of decisive leadership in Anambra. Mind you, iam a great supporter of Peter Obi, but his lack of leadership on this issues has brought all sorts of silly reasons why it shouldn't be phased out. |

It is good we can call cabs to pick us up.
But, What happened to the state EMERGENCY TELEPHONE NUMBER - 099 or 999? which calls for ambulance or police if one is being attacked by robbers?
If getting the GSM companies to give us a 3 digit emergency number is difficult, we can get a number like the cab number from one GSM company.
Like 080-999-9999 as the Anambra state emergency number to call for fire brigade, Police or Ambulance.
Does it mean the system died with Peter Obi's exit? |

liberty300: Dear spyder880
Thank you so much for the wonderful pictures of enugu state that you keep feeding us with. I know to some people it's just pictures but to people like me, it's more than pictures but of beauty and hope. Most of my friends abroad that look down on Nigeria got a change of heart after I sent them these pictures that you posted here. You are a blessing to us as Nigerians. God bless you sir and keep up the good work.
P.s. Which camera are you using for these pictures, it's really awesome @ the bolded! Exactly!! For me, I don't see the mere pictures in Spyder's posts. I see the amazing resurrection of our people from the unprovoked destruction and oppression visited upon us by the wicked souls we share this country with. Imagine that within 40 years, we rose from some of these pictures below to the pictures Spyder is posting, inspite of the marginalization, exclusion from political power and state policy to deny our zone of any amenities of modern life! It's simply an impressive testimony to our peoples resilient spirit.

basilo101: Our rural areas needs serious attention. Absolutely! I agree 100%. But we must prioritize based on our tiny resources. I usually remind all that Enugu is about the poorest state in Nigeria in terms of federal allocation. Those that schemed such lopsided allocation against the SE were exactly hoping the place would NEVER develop, but the Igbo ingenuity have made a nonsense of their evil schemes. Only the private sector investments will eventually grow Enugu and provide additional resources for the development of our rural areas. Chime's infrastructure will help convince the private sector that Enugu is a good location for business. I believe Enugu must give attention to the rural areas. But must make the Enugu city ready for business investment by private sector, which will eventually boost the tax base of the state and make resources available for development of the far flung villages in the state.. More like saying you have to walk before you run. Based on a less than N100 billion naira budget in a country where some states get N500 billion naira, Enugu must desperately grow its IGR by developing its biggest city for businesses to flourish as well as create new industrial estates at Emene and Agbani area for new industries to set up in the state. |

You tell me things are working and such examples as you have stated above are being meted on poor hapless souls in Enugu by commissioned agents of government. Didn't ESWAMA staff kill a little innocent boy the other day for heloping him mum to throw away refuse?
And we are flying Dude take your bitterness and empty talk to your state and leave Enugu citizens to celebrate the infrastructural improvements in their state. Rome was not built in a day and even so, Rome does not have all it needs yet. Therefore, Enugu will not have all it needs to soar immediately. The important thing is that improvement is being made gradually in Enugu, unlike some weird places as your state where your politicians sponsor Boko Haram terrorists with the money meant for development to kill fellow citizens for fun. Poor people and their neighborhoods exist all around the world. If Hurricane Katrina did not hit New Orleans, we would never have seen pictures of poor neighborhoods as lower ninth ward that is worse than Obiagu existing right there in New Orleans! In your estimation, Spyder should ignore the good things happening in his state and post the poor neighborhoods and the misery of the poor to satisfy your sadistic jealousy. If Spyder does not celebrate the improvements in his state by posting them here, who will do it for them? CNN or BBC? |

However beyond that, this thread is either showing people's Igbotic 4 storey buildings or village duplex or Nnewi people's hard earned industries. Government presence is really lacking in Anambra State and this is after Obi stayed 8 years with little to show. Bro take your assessment or advise and shove it into IMO thread. Pls lets rest from posting pics for the time being an discuss about those that make our dear state thick, many people know these people outside Nigeria but didnt know they are from the "Light of The Nation" and are the reason while we are called the Light of the Nation.
Lets celebrate our literary icons, you can add to the list if you know any.
1. Chinua Achebe. 2. Cyprian Ekwensi. 3. Chukwuemeka Ike. 4. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. 5. Okey Ndibe. 6. Ukamaka Olisakwe. 7. Christopher Okigbo. 8. Laz Ekwueme. 9. Tony Ubesie.
Later we might celebrate our music icons, sports icons, business moguls, academias, lawyers, doctors, artists, politicians, engineers name it we have them more than Midas have Gold. I think we should begin to name public secondary schools, libraries etc after some of these illustrous sons of Anambra. I want to see a Chinua Achebe, Christopher Okigbo,Pius Okigbo secondary, Cypprian Ekwensi,Laz Ekwueme schools, libraries, The women development center Awka should be name Dora Akunyili women development center. Chimamanda Adichie should be honored with a library named after her etc. I am not sure of a positive contribution made by some of the people on your list. Such as Okey Ndibe. |

b: Enugu, Nigeria wins 2014 “100 Resilient Cities Challenge”
December 03 10:44 2014
…35CITIES FROM AROUND THE WORLD JOIN A GROWING NETWORK OF URBAN CENTERS BETTER PREPARING TO RESPOND TO21STCENTURY CHALLENGES
NEW YORK, December 3, 2014 – 100 Resilient Cities (100RC),pioneered by The Rockefeller Foundation, announced Wednesday that 35 cities from around the world have been invited to join the 100 Resilient Cities Network.
The announcement was made during The Rockefeller Foundation’s Urban Resilience Summit in Singapore. Some of the cities in Africa that made the list are Enugu, Nigeria; Kigali, Rwanda; Accra, Ghana and Arusha, Tanzania
This second wave of cities will join 32 cities that won last year’s 100 Resilient Cities Challenge, forming a growing network of urban centers around the world that are ready to respond to the social, economic and physical shocks and stressesthat are a growing part of the 21st century.
100Resilient Cites was created by an initial $100 million commitment by the Rockefeller Foundation as part of their Centennial last year, recognizing the trends of urbanization and globalization that characterize this century.
“Members of the 100 Resilient Cities network are leading the world in showing that not only is it possible to build urban resilience in every kind of city, but it’s an imperative,” said Dr. Judith Rodin, President of the Rockefeller Foundation.
“Cities are learning that by building resilience, not only will they be better prepared for the bad times, but also life is better in the good times, especially for the poor and vulnerable. It’s smart investment, and yields a resilience dividend that is a win for everyone.”
News Market roundabout in EnuguRe-Modeled New Market Roundabout in Enugu Capital City Dr. Judith Rodin gave further details about the organization and the Resilient Cities Programme below:
Why Resilient Cities?
As the number of people living in urban areas grows from 50% of the world’s population to an estimated 70% in 2050, cities around the worldmust cope with effects of rapid urbanization, globalization, climate change, and natural and man-made disasters.
Urban resilience is the capacity of individuals, communities, institutions, businesses and systems to survive, adapt and grow no matter what kinds of chronic stresses and acute shocks they experience. From the impact of super-typhoons, to growing socio-economic inequality or the ability of city systems to respond to booming populations and waning food supplies, 100 Resilient Cities aims to equip urban areas with the tools and support network to design, develop and implement holistic solutions.
“Each city is unique, and through the 100RC network, cities are building on each other’s experiences, and learning the best resilience-building techniques,”said Michael Berkowitz, president of 100 Resilient Cities.“By connecting cities with each other and to resilience-building experts, we are aiming to create a global practice of scalable resilience solutions, so that cities can respond to the challenges of this urban century more effectively and efficiently.”
Building a Global Network of Resilient Cities
The diverse list reflects the need to learn from cities of all sizes across the globe in order to adapt and innovate. The cities in the 100Resilient Citiesnetwork face myriad sets of environmental and social challenges – ranging from rising threats of flooding and extreme weather, to intensifying strains on infrastructure and health systems, and deepening economic stresses– and are on different points of their journey towards building a more resilient metropolis.
Each city on the network is eligible to receive grant funding to hire a Chief Resilience Officer, who will lead the analysis, planning and implementation of the city’s resilience strategy, workingwith different government agencies and across sectors of society. They will also receive technical support and services they need as they work towards implementing that strategy, as well as access a variety of platform partners in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors. These partners will offer tools in areas such as innovative finance, technology, infrastructure, land use, and community and social resilience.
Selection Process
Momentum from last year’s inaugural challenge made this year highly competitive, spanning over 90 countries across six continents. This year’scities were chosen from nearly 350 applicants on the basis of their ability to demonstrate aunique vision for resilience, a long-term commitment to cutting across silos of government and sectors of society, a special attention to the needs of the poor and vulnerable. Network cities serve as a model for other global cities that seek to build their own resilience.
Member cities were selected upon the recommendation of an international panel of distinguished judges, including former president José MaríaFigueres Olsen of Costa Rica; Dr. Donald Kaberuka, President of the African Development Bank;Dr. IsherAhluwali, Chairperson for the Board of Governors on the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations; and President and CEO of the Asia Society, JosetteSheeran.
The 100 Resilient Cities Challenge will open for its next round of city applications in mid-2015. God bless our Governor. Even Oyibo are taking note of his silent transformation and hard work. PROUDIGBO: The glass windows on the buildings look nice! Hope by now they've started the landscaping of the entire area! It is shameful that Obama allowed the US ambassador to Nigeria to let this happen. It is almost unbelievable that Nigeria which had been a staunch historically ally of the USA moved closer to Russia under a black man as US President!
If US can supply stinger missiles to rebels in Afghanistan and Angola, why not support Nigeria to defeat Boko Haram? If USA can even support Syrian rebels who had and continue to comitt unspeakable atrocities and terrorist agenda, why not help Nigeria?
Now, the CIA will have a free hand to wage an unmitigated media propaganda war against Nigeria claiming the devil himself was better than Nigeria. They will even plot their own terror attacks and blame it on Nigeria to bomb her. Or even drop Ebola infested animals from the air to mock the "premature declaration" of Nigeria as Ebola free.
Obama should call the ambassador in Abuja to order. USa had been and should remain a great friend of Nigeria. Obama must never let that change under his watch. |

Myluv1: There is nothing like being too religious, it is rather being realistic and practical. Here's a quote from an article:
And that was what happened last Friday when Obiano doled out the sum of N1.9billion to mission schools in the state for the 2014 UBE projects- N433 million Catholic and N300 to the Anglican while N1.082 billion is in the custody of Anambra State UBE Board for funding public primary and junior secondary education. Governor Obiano said the fund allocated to each mission was based on the number of schools that government had returned to them. He confirmed that funds released to the Church by his predecessor were judiciously utilized which encouraged his administration to sustain the policy.
Continue.. There is a reason why roads cost less to build in Cameroon, Benin Republic than in Nigeria. Even though we have the same soil and terrain. In Nigeria, corruption have eaten so deep that even the construction companies are in a cartel of their own inflating every construction project. Obi did good by involving the churches in building up the education and healthcare sectors. The so called good old days in education and quality healthcare were the days before government took over those sectors from the churches. Obi was right to correct that historic injustice and also help them bring those schools and hospitals to world class standard again. |

Ikengawo: Old colonial documents have pointed to onitsha always having a large Hausa community Other ethnic groups in Onitsha owning property is actually a welcomed idea. My take is that since the city is such a cosmopolitan melting pot of various ethnic nationalities, the federal government should be more involved in its development they way they treat Lagos, Kano,Abuja,Kaduna and many other places. Let the federal government site more facilities in the area to foster national unity. Such move will encourage other ethnic groups to buy land, build houses and even inter marry with the Igbos. It is the constant marginalization of the Igbos that discourage even great business moguls like Dangote from investing in the SE region. |

I guess most are early settlers. Turn Onitsha to no man's land, they know it's not possible. Why do you think they cross into Asaba at the slightest sneeze whenever gbege starts? Actually, I knew some Hausa guys that could speak Igbo when i lived in Fegge as a child. If Hausa in Onitsha will call Onitsha home, and invest in it, and convince their brothers at the federal government to stop the war against the SE development by blocking any federal amenities meant for the area, then we truly have a country to be proud of. But what i have just said is wishful thinking. Therefore, Onitsha will never be a no man's land because no other ethnic group in Nigeria wants to join hands to invest in it and develop it. |

I am glad that APGA is convincing all our competent sons to contest and serve our people on the platform of APGA. That was exactly Ojukwu's dream. Ojukwu in one of his interviews reasoned that those who wished the worst on Igbos, picked the worst amongst us to represent Ndigbo. So that we can be ridiculed as not having leadership qualities and such puppets can be influenced to help marginalize Igbo. APGA was simply to create a space for alternative platform where we can choose the right achievers and responsible people ourselves to represent us. Ojukwu was a political genius. I continue to pray that God gives APGA great man and gives Chief Victor Umeh the humility to nurture and retain our great people under this umbrella provided by Ojukwu for our people. If we can go round the south east and convince men of exemplary character to serve their people under the platform of APGA, we would have achieved Ojukwu's dream for Ndigbo being able to choose the best amongst ourselves to lead us. Instead of others choosing the worst criminals amongst us to become our leaders. |
