Good day everyone, I'm a Pharmacy student in a Nigerian University, although I wanted to change to medicine but i was afraid I wouldn't beat the cut-off mark but I later did, I felt sad after this and wrote another jamb this year for medicine , but my school is on strike now, we've not even started lectures , if I gain admission I will be resuming 2024, I'm not sure if this is a good decision.
PS:I haven't told my dad about this , I'm planning to tell him after gaining admission because I know he may not allow me.
Follow your passion. But I will strongly advise you still find a way to still continue in your pharmacy program while simultaneously taking UTME. Do not throw away your pharmacy for any reason. Pick another good school for medicine if your current school does not allow you to matriculate twice.

All right chief, what will their departmental/merit cut off mark look like?
Their cut off marks are usually moderate. With a score of 250 and good o'level you are in.

Greetings the erudite scholars of this great forum. Do private universities emphasizes on jamb score before admitting students into the college of medicine and surgery or should i say basically what is the criterials for admitting students into medicine and surgery in the private universities.
Some use JAMB and olevel, others use JAMB and post UTME. Less competition but very high fees

TONYE001:
Why I Shared this Story.

I've had several opportunities to discuss career aspirations with teenagers. Some have told me they would have loved to be doctors but they don't like the sight of blood. Some adults have said this too. The other day, one of my nieces told me she if not for her "hatred" for blood, she would have loved to become to nurse. She's currently studying Biomedical Sciences (SLT) in a Southern university.

Recall the story I shared in my initial post. You'd imagine that I'd make career choices that'd take me as far away from blood as possible. But this isn't the case. I have bachelor's and master's degrees in Human Physiology. I'm currently a final-year medical student training in one of the middle-belt teaching hospitals. See how "bloody" my career path is!

Guess what? My horrible experience in the story I shared did not affect me in any way. In the course of my training, I've been exposed to all manner of things. I've assisted in very bloody surgeries. None of these things disturbed me in any way.

People have said that they don't want to study Medicine e because they can't deal with dead bodies. People have said they can't study Accounting ng because they can't deal with the calculations. People have said they can't study Law because they can't read volumes. People always find reasons why they can't do things.

I believe many people are looking at the wrong things in choosing careers. I'm of the opinion that the difficulty of the process, or the discomfort of the training should not deter anyone from going after the field he/she loves. Unless, of course, the field of choice poses a threat to the person's health.

Once you love the discipline, every other thing can be sorted out. There's actually nothing you a trained and determined heart can't endure. In the first year of your training, you'd get used to most of these things.

So, the purpose of this post is to tell you that you should forget about your fears. If you love it, go after it. Train your mind to defeat that fear. Get used to the processes of your discipline. Bury yourself in them. In no time, you'd find those things you had phobia for have become your pals.

Sometimes, our fears are projections of our ignorance. The more learned we become, the less likely we are to be afraid.

Just thought of sharing this.

Have a wonderful day.

Truer words have never been spoken.
. More grease to your elbow doc.
You are a big inspiration (I have read your diary). I am an aspirant of medicine. I pray that the God that did it for you do it for me too.
God bless you doc.

Thanks a lot for this.

Truth be told, I just want a degree with which if in the future, Nigeria becomes good, I would be living comfortably with my job and if perhaps, hopefully not, Nigeria continues this path to doom, I'd be able to secure a job with my certificate upon relocation and wouldn't have to live a fugitive's life in a foreign land.

So which of the two fits best into my description, thanks once again.
In my honest opinion, Nursing fits your description perfectly. Nurses are so wanted abroad to the extent that a nurse can't search for a job for a week in the UK and not get one.
And even in Nigeria too, employment opportunities abound for nurses even if the remuneration (pay) is kinda low. Pharmacists are bosses in Nigeria, but abroad?, I don't think so.

TonyStark2:
To be fair, I know this thread is solely for medics but allow me to digress a bit:

Comparing a PharmD to a Bachelor of Nursing degree, please, advice me on which has better career prospects both home and abroad (based on facts).

Please if you're knowledgeable about this, don't ignore it, please I'm begging, I've got less than 12hrs to make a decision. Thanks.
Hello brother, if your plan is to travel abroad after study, then nursing is your sure ticket. But if you are interested in practicing in Nigeria, PharmD is slightly better, because of the added benefit of private practice.

My more experienced chiefs can contribute more.
God bless you.

Uniben or UI if you can score 88 to 90 in either of the school's post UTME. It is not impossible. I have seen people personally score 89,90,91 in UI post UTME and persons score 86,88,92 in Uniben's post UTME. Getting any of these kind of scores will place you at par with those with 300+ infact your aggregate score will surpass them. Take the risk please.

When I had 298 in 2020 and chose UI that was how some enemies of progress discouraged me and I went to a seemingly "less competitive university" only to get denied outrightly without being given a consolation. If you've been studying very hard abeg take the risk. Stop listening to naysayers. Because they can't or could not do it they will tell you why you cannot do it
Your post actually made me laugh out loud.
People are giving their candid and honest opinion to a guy who is confused and you are calling them "naysayers".
What is even your point? You are advising someone to chase a white goose, to take an uncalculated risk??
91 in UI POST UTME?, 92 in UNIBEN POST UTME? Really??, What are the chances that he makes these wild scores you are mentioning.
Just like Rugged fighter rightly said, you couldn't make it in other schools and you are fantasizing about UI. Do you know that UI is the most competitive medical school in Nigeria??

Dear Omabel71, enough has been said by many experienced and bright minds on this forum, it is left for you to make your decision.
God bless you.

Good morning, Doctors and aspirants in the house. My utme is 289 and I selected UI but I am thinking of changing to unillorin due to the fact that people really performed well in this year jamb. I am Oyo state indigene. I want people to advise on this.
Also I am considering either lautech or uniosun too . Uniosun putme form is out presently and I don't know the status of their medical school. I want people to candidly contribute on the situation.
Thanks.
Hello boss. Your chance of admission in UI with 289 is quite low. UI is virtually the most competitive med school in Nigeria. If you have the funds, process LAUTECH. UNIOSUN is not accredited. God bless you.

Negative mofo, some private medical schools pay lesser than 3M Annually.
Please be guided before you try to correct someone.
N3M for an accredited private med school is even hard to find nowadays. My friends in PUMS(PAMO University of medical sciences) pay as high as 6milla yearly.

Olevel AGGREGATE = 45

Jamb score = 326 = 40.75

Total aggregate = 85.75

Is this good for LASU Medicine and surgery?

Or should I rather wait for WASSCE? Or Prepare for UI Post utme and go to UI instead?
Welcome to medicine bro

Most certainly, nursing is a sure means to immigrate. The rate by which nigerian nurses immigrate now, is so scary and alarming .At this rate, there would be a severe dearth of nurses in nigeria in the future( well there already is). A degree in nursing is now more like a free ticket to moving and settling abroad.
Yeah, this is very true.
Almost all candidates apply for nursing with the aim of moving abroad after graduation.
