Are you being serious right now?

So talking about other people's beliefs means I must also share those beliefs?

If a Christian now starts criticizing the gods worshipped in Hinduism, this means the Christian now believes in Hindu gods? What kind of logic is this.

In my humble opinion, attempting to answer this question to the satisfaction of most people is an exercise in futility.

To do justice to this question we must first agree to the answer to this question:

1)Who/what is God

To some people god is a graven image, to others it is money and power, for others god does not exist, for others, God is the Almighty and most merciful Father who created heaven and earth.

If anyone is truly interested in the answer to this question, please provide your definition of god, and I will provide a quick answer to the OP's question based on that.

For those who do not believe in the existence of God, the answer is trivial, since the question becomes invalid.

I dey wait for una definition.
I think my OP targeted the Abrahamic God described in the bible & worshipped by Christians.

Is God a man? How can you compare the all-knowing for the abilities and capabilities of a man? Besides, can I die for my own son? Even if I can (and I dont ever see it happening), will I be happy if I look down from the great beyond and see him still shamelessly continuing in the same crime that I used my life to pay for? Will I be happy if I know that I gave him the best moral advice, examplified it with my life and paid for all his crime with my blood? No mortal can accept that here or in the hereafter (if the consciousness is there).

Lets put it straight: God's love is higher that all men's love put together. In like manner, God's anger, fury and indignation is higher than that of all men put together. Brother you had better run for cover, now, while you can
Are those two statements even compatible?

How can someone be both perfectly loving and perfectly furious? If you have fury & anger then clearly your love is limited.

The black death:Plague is an infectious disease caused by bacteria called Yersinia pestis. These bacteria are found mainly in rodents, particularly rats, and in the fleas that feed on them. Other animals and humans usually contract the bacteria from rodent or flea bites.

Prior to then; there were no pesticide/insectide to contain rodents then.
Do you like the sound/sight of rodent in your environment? The answer is simply no. It's left for you, to always keep your surroundings clean.
Then, human were not concious of their environment.
Thank God we've passed that.

Get it!
The rodents did not create or cause Yersinia Pestis to exist. They were simply carriers of an organism that already existed. Exposure to those rodents would not have not lead to the death of 200 million people if Yersinia Pestis itself did not exist.

Why do Yersinia Pestis and other pathogenic bacteria exist in the first place? That's the question here. The measures humans have taken to avoid dying from them are all after the fact.

Also as a side note, the bible doesn't even warn against pathogenic bacteria at all. It doesn't tell us to wash our hands to avoid getting sick, or to avoid potential carriers of disease causing microbes (even in the animals we eat). All of that was figured out by human beings through their own hard work (not prayer, even after millions of those Europeans prayed for a cure).

This thread wasn't meant to discuss cancer but since people are bringing it up I'll mention it.

Cancer is when some of the cells within an organism begin to mutate and multiply in such a way that harms other cells within that organism. Some of your brain cells, for example, start growing out of control, forming a tumor that can now steal nutrients from surrounding cells, and even migrate to other parts of your body, destroying vital functions.

Unlike bacterial infections, it isn't a foreign organism invading & causing disease. Part of your body is killing other parts of your body.

This even happens in innocent children.
Childhood leukemia, the most common type of cancer in children and teens, is a cancer of the white blood cells. Abnormal white blood cells form in the bone marrow. They quickly travel through the bloodstream and crowd out healthy cells. This increases the body's chances of infection and other problems.
Why is such a thing even possible if we are perfectly created by God? Yet some of our cells are rebelling against our own body?

Most diseases are man made.

For God has given man the power and dominion.
Talking about power; which knowledge and wisdom (how man apply knowledge)

When man misuse his power circumstances are bound to occur.

This is the reason why we have scientists (knowledge God has given us) to tackle these problems.

You don't expect God to come down from heaven to get things fixed.
He has given man the dominion to rule over everything, it's now left for man to make use of it (brain)

Have you ever heard of the phrase "we treat but God heal"

I believe in God and i rely on science.
It's not about hating God. I personally see no evidence that he exists, but my question is directed at theists to understand how their concept of a loving God who created everything can logically fit with the existence of deadly microorganisms.

Are you saying that humans created deadly microorganisms? Even the one that caused the Black Death and killed 200 million Europeans (who were all or mostly Christian) in the 14th century?

Also, one of the biggest fears in medical science is that a deadly bacteria will evolve resistance to all the medicines we create. Some such bacteria are already arising (Google "superbugs" ). This is happening despite pharmacists and chemists diligently trying to make new medicines to combat the new strains. Antibiotic resistance is a real threat to the human race.

And it doesn't appear that any gods are helping, considering that the most God-fearing populations are dying the most from infections, and the people making the discoveries are mostly non-religious, atheist, or freethinking scientists who get their knowledge by repeated experimentation and study, not praying.

There are millions of species of Bacteria, whereas only a minute proportion of them can cause disease.

Bacteria process Organic Chemicals for use by other organisms. It is possible that Bacteria have functions we have not discovered yet. Without Bacteria to create Humus, soil would be useless as sand.

There are important Bacteria that protect our soft and moist tissues from intrusive organisms.

ALL DISEASE IS CAUSED BY SIN.

RIGHTEOUSNESS creates a shield against invasion by organisms that can cause problems. HOLINESS intensifies this protection to the point where organisms are driven out of other persons as well as oneself.

. EXODUS 15:22-26.

22. So Moses brought Israel from the Red sea,
and they went out into the wilderness of Shur;
and they went three days in the wilderness,
and found no water.
23. And when they came to Marah, they could
not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were
bitter: therefore the name of it was called
Marah.
24. And the people murmured against Moses, saying,
"What shall we drink?"
And he cried unto The LORD; and the LORD shewed him a tree, which when he had cast
into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there He made for them a Statute and an Ordinance, and there He proved them,
25. And Said,
"If thou wilt diligently
hearken to
The Voice of
The LORD thy God,
and wilt do that
which is Right in His Sight,
and wilt give ear
to His Commandments,
and keep all His Statutes,
I will put none of these Diseases upon thee,
which I have brought
upon the Egyptians:
for I am the LORD
that Healeth thee."

DISEASE from Bacteria is only a problem to Sinners. Questioning God's Wisdom in creating Bacteria betrays ignorance.
The bacterium responsible for the Black Death, Yersinia pestis, killed over 200 million Europeans. Yet those people took Christianity far more seriously than anyone today. They even prayed ceaselessly for healing, to no avail.

No, scientists use words like that because unlike religions, they are concerned with maintaining room for more discoveries and thus avoid making claims with absolute certainty. They don't make gigantic bold assertions with no proof like religions do, they humbly present what the data & evidence point to. You will find this type of language in every scientific paper or journal.

And it's indeed supported that every NDE is capable of being experienced solely by our minds. Just like dreams and hallucinations and psychedelic drug trips, NDEs are created by brain activity. No one has come back to report one after they have been fully dead for 24+ hours. NDEs come from people who's brains are still functioning.

Christianity EtcWhy Would God Create Disease-Causing Bacteria? by cloudgoddess(op): 4:36am On Jul 18, 2016
This question occured to me while reading up on some recent medical research. According to (Christian & other) scripture, God created every living thing. Why did he create bacteria?

He says man are to rule & have dominion over all animals. Yet bacteria and other deadly microbes continue to conquer us; Christians and non-Christians alike are at the mercy of whatever untreatable bacteria they happen to be unfortunate enough to be infected by.

For those without a full understanding of what bacteria are or how they work (genuinely not trying to be condescending but to educate):

Bacteria are tiny, single-celled animals that outnumber people at least 1000000:1 and are completely invisible to the human eye (progressively more advanced microscopes have been invented by scientists allowing us to better visualize them and analyze their physical & chemical structure). They are on everything, including all over & inside of your body, and in the air you breathe.

Some bacteria are harmless. But others cause horrible, often gruesome diseases and defects when they are able to access the human body. Some kill by dissolving your flesh as they release acidic chemicals into your epithelial tissue. Some cause festering rashes, blindness, internal bleeding because they are feeding on your cells and releasing deadly waste into your body.

The bacteria has no motive but to survive. From its perspective, it's simply doing what comes natural.

Perhaps the worst part is that they can gain resistance to any medicine we throw at them. Their DNA can literally change in a way that enables them to avoid the effects of any antibiotic that was previously effective. Once that happens, the resistance trait widely spreads and soon you have a huge amount of bacteria that are all resistant to our medicines (our chemical "weapon" against bacteria). In other words, they getting better at fighting back.

According to religious thought (Abrahamic specifically) a loving and merciful God, who made earth for humans to rule, intentionally created an entire domain of creatures that are invisible killers -- capable of multiplying rapidly, destroying our bodies from the inside out & continuously improving/upgrading their own artillery.

Why would he do this?

We hear series of bad news everyday: Manslaugther, kidnaps (leading to death), mob actions (jungle justice), bombing and shooting all over the world, accidents of varying degrees..
And millions of praying Christians are amongst the victims. Yet your God did not save them, like he promises he will all of his "children".

You're calling us fools for not believing a God that doesn't even do what he promises. Is he a liar or something? A con-artist that feeds off worship but doesn't follow through? Or maybe his powers are limited to saving only a few Christians a day?

Or perhaps it's more likely that he's a figment of collective human imagination, passed down through generations of childhood indoctrination (starting with the white Colonists who brought Christianity to West Africa).

IF statistically, Christians were saved more from critical illnesses, terrorist attacks, poverty, and regrew their amputated limbs, then maybe you could accurately call us fools for disbelieving. But the fact is that a Christian is no better off than a Buddhist or a Hindu or a Shintoist or an atheist.

In fact, countries who are leaving religion behind are doing BETTER in overall health and prosperity. Science, diversity, and human collaboration are doing much more for people than religion ever has.

Our brains create everything we experience. It's no different with the beliefs we hold. When you are taught to believe that something is true, whether it be demons, gods, spirits, or ghosts, your brain will present such images to you and your thoughts will continue to reinforce them -- until you realize the folly. It's like the child who sincerely believes there are monsters living under his bed or in his closet, and cowers in fear at night because of his own mental projection.

Christianity EtcRe: Why Are Christians The Ones Turning Atheist. by cloudgoddess(f): 5:17pm On Jul 17, 2016
There are a few reasons that come to mind:

1. The brainwashing & indoctrination that Muslims undergo (usually from childhood where the mind is most impressionable) is severely more intense than that of Christians.

Instilled "virtues" of submission/servitude (one Muslim friend of mine expressed that Muslims are called to be "slaves of Allah" ), Ingroup vs. Outgroup mentality (Muslims are taught that they are special & loved by Allah & all other religious groups are wrong and hated by Allah. Many cults share this type of mentality), tying the religion to one's identity (Muslims are taught that everyone is born Muslim/being Muslim is part of their blood, etc. And marrying Muslim is emphasized very strongly, it is explicitly taught that marrying non-Muslim brings dishonor), and rites and rituals infused into daily life (ex. 5x a day prayer, Ramadan, prayer mats and praying towards Mecca, using special Arabic words). All of these things and more strengthen the significance of Islam in a Muslim followers mind, infusing their subconscious at a more thorough level than most Christians are forced to undergo.

2. Islam has a history of dealing violently with "apostates" and "infidels".

There is no such thing as honor killing in Christianity. But in the Muslim world it appears that many find it completely justified to kill (& at best, abandon/disown) their own relatives for leaving the faith. It's even in Shariah law that apostates should be killed. This could probably stand alone as the single biggest reason many Muslims remain in the faith. The amount of fear this instills is a VERY strong subconscious motivator to never question their religion. Fear has been used to control humans for centuries and religion is no different. Islam uses fear as one of its main tools.

3. Muslims tend to be more isolated from other ideas.

It appears that Muslims tend to form and live in solely Muslim communities, seperate from opposing views and lifestyles, whereas Christians are often much more exposed to the secular world. So Christians have more opportunities to run into arguments against their religion, whereas Muslims usually stay very protected from such (this is one side effect of the fear that's instilled in them).

Christianity EtcRe: Atheism And Morality; Do Atheists Have A Foundation For Morality by cloudgoddess(f): 8:47pm On Jul 16, 2016
hopefulLandlord:
Umm... I'd say only atheists can have meaningful moral opinions. "Because god said it is a sin" is not a meaningful opinion. Religion takes the meaning out of morality. When religious people are thoughtfully moral, it is usually in spite of their religious belief, not because of it.
Arguing that something is wrong because it is a "sin," as David Foster Wallace once wrote in a different context, is like arguing that murder is wrong because it is against the law. It's a circular, deeply superficial and content-free argument. You merely substitute one word for another ("sin" for "wrong"wink.

To the extent that the religious go beyond "god said it is a sin" they are actually appealing to fundamentally atheist moral arguments. For example, "because it causes pain to others" is actually an atheist argument, not a religious one. When religious people use it in some form ("god said it is a sin, because it causes pain"wink they are bolstering the weakness

The only way religious people can make their arguments deeper without using atheist reasoning is to appeal to the afterlife and some sort of calculus of beyond life reward and punishment. In my opinion this is actually a lousy way to deepen the argument (even ignoring the fact that there is no reason to believe it to be true) because it places notions of wrong and morality into an extrinsic motivation framework. You should not kill or rape because even if you get away, you'll be punished with eternal hellfire? Really? That's the best you can come up with? You should be kind to the unfortunate because you'll get booze and women in heaven? Really? That's "meaningful" morality? It's the reverse. It empties behavior of even its natural moral meaning. Even without reading deep ethics tomes, a small child will be kind to a crying friend. Putting religion in that child's head is equivalent to taking that natural unreasoning empathy out.

How do you actually make the argument deeper (for instance by asking, "why is causing pain wrong?"wink? You have to go where no truly religious people will go. To subjects like evolution.

For instance, we can understand "pain" through evolutionary notions of empathy, cooperation and reciprocal trust and get to a point in the analysis where we don't even need the word "wrong." Only within a Darwinian framework can we even talk about what the existence of rape among dolphins implies for the corresponding human behavior, because we understand at some level that our model has to cover both cases (since there is no artificial distinction elevating man above animals for atheists).

This allows atheists to analyze and apply the "don't cause pain" in much deeper ways than religious people. For example the religious usually make humans out to be special and don't usually care much for animal pain. In fact, one religious guy I know argued, "but God put the animals on the earth for us to eat!" What do you get as a result? Factory farming. A military-industrial complex of horrendous pain-creation justified by some notion of humans having dominion over animals by divine sanction. Yes, I assign a significant proportion of the blame for things like factory farming to religious notions of morality.

The religious are also less likely to understand and apply practical notions of deterrent pain and more likely to cause more pain than necessary. The religious might believe in some notion of divine symbolism and symmetry (an eye for an eye, or cutting off the hand of a thief, or stoning an adulterer or pretending that killing in war and capital punishment are somehow different from murder) in their pain calculus.
Literally everything here.

Religion is probably the worst source of morality & ethics because it insists that things are right/wrong ONLY because some authority said so. Wow. Very insightful and enlightening. *sarcasm*

When morality is based on human reasoning, combined with our INNATE desire to "play well in groups", get along, and live in peace, we can have a system of laws & ethics that is completely based on our needs as a group of sentient, thinking, human beings -- not some bullsh*t made up by desert-dwelling, ignorant, misogynist goat hearders 20 centuries ago.

Religion actually makes it so that our moral values remain stagnant, stuck in 1st century logic, and incompatible with our changing, modern world. It's an enemy of moral progress.

Human beings were created by God. A human being killing a human being is wrong because we humans did not and cannot create life, therefore we have no right to destroy it. God created AND OWNS LIFE, SO IF HE SO DECIDES TO DESTROY WHAT HE CREATED, IT'S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS! LIFE BELONGS TO GOD, SO HE CAN CHOOSE TO GIVE OR WITHDRAW IT FROM ANYBODY AS HE PLEASES! If you want to contest the above stated fact, then maybe you should first go and create your own planet and create life in them, then you can come back to query God for killing what He created.

God chose to create man and give life to man as a resource for man to use in serving God on this planet, but when God saw that some people He created had deliberately chosen to misuse the resource of life freely given to them, and instead of using it to serve God the creator, they decided to use the same God-given life to serve and worship idols and inanimate objects as their god, at that time, God Himself decided to destroy those lives because they had abused the purpose for which life was given and turned their back on God their creator. It is not wickedness as you and other atheists have falsely insinuated for somebody to destroy what he solely created if he feels what he has created is not living up to its purpose! That is why you can buy a toothbrush and use it for a couple of months only to throw it away someday after you notice it's no longer effective for brushing your teeth. You threw the brush away because it solely belonged to you! God chose to destroy any life He destroyed because ALL LIFE ALSO BELONG TO HIM ALONE AND HE CAN DO AS HE PLEASES WITH THEM!

The only reason why God has not destroyed you and other atheists who have been insulting Him just like he asked Israel to destroy some idol-worshipping nations in the bible is just because He is trying to be merciful and give you more and more time to repent and be saved. It is only God's love and mercy that has kept you from being destroyed despite all insults you give to God, but the sad part of the matter is that God's patience is very long but not infinite, and one day you may run out of His patience and face Him in judgement. That one day certainly comes when you die and you have to go back to the same God to give an account of what you did with your life on earth.
Lol. Get over yourself.

Ok stop here.

This thread is sickening. We've had a biologist with a self professed PhD deny evolution. He offered some pretty inane arguments but at least he seemed to know a bit more than you guys.

I've never seen such a thread were ignorance has been so celebrated. You say you want to believe but you've been informed on this thread that evolution is not a belief.

As someone posited earlier, it is intellectually downgrading for anyone to reply your queries.

You and the OP are the ones who don't know, and don't know that they don't know.

Nobody who can spell the word evolution asks why there aren't ants with human heads or why there are still apes today. Before you critique something understand it first.
