Phones › Whatsapp Now Lets You Pin Your Favourite Chats On Top by Codedboy95(op): 10:24am On May 01, 2017
WhatsApp has recently been reported to be testing many new features like 'Change Number' and 'Live Location', and now the company is seen testing a new feature that allows you to pin your favourite chats to the top. The feature is being tested on Android for now, but it hints that it is set to roll out to stable versions in the near future.

Android Police was the first one to spot it, and if you're running WhatsApp beta for Android versions 2.17.162 or 2.17.163, you'll most likely be able to use it. Press on the individual / group chat you want to pin, and choose the Pin symbol from the top bar. The other options alongside Pin are Delete, Mute, and Archive. Once you pin the chat, it will remain on the top of your chat list, irrespective of your dialogue or conversation timings with the individual or group concerned. Even though you have more recent chats with other individuals and groups, you will see them after these pinned chats. WhatsApp allows you to pin a maximum number of three chats, after which it will throw a notification that 'You can only pin up to 3 chats' if you try to pin another chat.

You can also unpin these chats whenever you please, by long pressing the option, and disabling the Pin button. As mentioned, this feature is in beta and has not rolled out to stable versions yet. If you cannot wait to use these feature, sign up for the beta version on Google Play from your Android phone.

Whose chat are you going to pin ?

mum? dad? or bae? grin

Phones › You Can Now Live Stream To Youtube, If You Have At Least 1,000 Subscribers by Codedboy95(op): 7:19am On Apr 18, 2017
Back in February, YouTube gave people the ability to live stream directly to their channel from their phones… with one catch: it was only open to folks with 10,000 subscribers or more.

If you’ve been dying to hop on the live streaming train but haven’t hit that 10k mark yet, good news: they’ve dropped the requirement to 1,000 subscribers as opposed to 10,000. It’s still not open to everyone, but that’s a considerably smaller hurdle.

The change quietly happened sometime in the past few days, but got swept up amongst the April Fools’ noise that comes with changing anything near the beginning of this month. A support page confirms the change, and a rep from YouTube confirmed that it should be open to everyone with 1,000 subscribers or more — not a random pool.

So why not just open it to everyone, regardless of subscriber count? A few possible reasons:

Boring content is the bane of live streams, and a lot of people just aren’t consistently enthralling enough to watch live/sans editing. Having some relatively high number of subscribers suggests that the creator at least has some idea what people want to see.

Stress testing. Live streams introduce new technical challenges, and limiting the number of people who can participate lets YouTube work out the kinks without disappointing everyone.
People are presumably less likely to stream illegal content when they’ve got an established channel to lose

Phones › The Fingerprint Reader On Your Phone May Not Be As Secure As You Think by Codedboy95(op): 10:51pm On Apr 17, 2017
I love using the fingerprint scanner on my phone. When I’m trying to pull up a recipe while cooking or have a drink in my hand, it makes getting into my phone simple while keeping it secure. But it seems that it may not be as secure as we think. The same way that people have been able to fool face-recognition sensors with facsimiles of faces, researchers have developed a set of “master” fingerprints – like a master key – that shows some flaws in the process.

Researchers at the University of Michigan have developed a set of fake digital fingerprints that put together the common features found in many fingerprints.

With these digital composites, the team was able to get matches 65 percent of the time in their simulation. This is just a simulation, and the New York Times says that experts think the process would be less successful in the real world, but it does still introduce a worry.

Matching snapshots

While no two fingerprints are exactly alike, there are patterns, and our phones read our prints by comparing them to snapshots of parts of our fingers. So the print stored on your phone is a bunch of tiny pieces of prints rather than a scan of a full print, and those little pieces have more similarity than total prints do.

Dr. Nasir Memon, a professor at NYU’s Tandon School of Engineering and one of three authors of the study, believes that if one could print a glove with the so-called MasterPrints on them, 40-50 percent of iPhones could be accessed within the 5 tries allowed before the password prompt pops up.

The potential ramifications of this will be hard to guess at until these studies start putting physical prints against physical phones, but Memon said the risk drops as you have fewer prints included on the phone. More prints stored means more snapshots and more potential matches.

There’s not much to worry about quite yet, but maybe our phones should have multi-factor authentication as well.

Phones › Instagram Stories Hits 200M Users, Surpassing Snapchat by Codedboy95(op): 6:14pm On Apr 13, 2017
“Move last and take things” seems to be Facebook’s new motto.

Facebook 's Instagram announced today that over 200 million people now use its Instagram Stories feature every day, up from 150 million announced in January.

Today's milestone catapults Instagram past the originator of the 'Stories' format — Snapchat, which reported 161 million daily active users ahead of its parent company Snap's IPO last month. It shows just how successfully Facebook can copy and scale an appealing format.

Along with this announcement, Facebook is introducing new 'sticker' tools for Instagram, to make it a more appealing alternative to Snapchat, and more engaging for its users. Now Instagram's users can turn their selfies into stickers, which they'll be able to easily share, or pin within a video.

The app is also launching new Geostickers for Chicago, London, Madrid and Tokyo to apply over photos. The stickers have been designed by artists from the respective cities, enabling users to tap to learn more about the art.

You can see that Instagram is getting faster and faster at cloning Snapchat's features as we recap the timeline:

Stories: Snapchat – October 2013, Instagram – August 2016, Lag – 2 years 10 months

Location Filters: Snapchat – July 2014, Instagram – March 2016, Lag – 1 year 9 months

AR Stickers: Snapchat – April 2016, Instagram – April 2017, Lag – 1 year

Create-Your-Own-Stickers: Snapchat – December 2016, Instagram – April 2017, Lag – 4 months

At this point the only major feature left for Instagram to copy is Snapchat’s animated selfie masks, which Facebook already has in its app and Messenger

What is your say? i guess copy and paste isn't so bad after all grin cheesy

Phones › Whatsapp Beta Brings Ability To Revoke Messages 5 Minutes Later by Codedboy95(op): 12:24pm On Apr 13, 2017
A WhatsApp beta update now allows messages to be revoked a whole 5 minutes after it has been sent. The update arrives for the for WhatsApp Web 0.2.4077 that basically works on improvements to do with the revoke feature. The feature however is turned off by default in Settings, so users will have to enable it to take advantage of the same.
Another new feature has showed up for the Android version of WhatsApp beta tagged as v2.17.148

The update is a new pop up menu that appears while editing or formatting text in the text field.
Upon selecting text, beta users are now seeing new formatting shortcuts including Bold, Italic, Monospace, and Strikethrough. Users on Android 7+ will already be able to see Translate, provided they have Google Translate installed.
Indeed these are updates that showed up on beta version of WhatsApp, so there’s no telling if or when they would be out.
The last update we saw from the beta community was for iOS. The iOS app saw a new Group Info page with a revamped design, new icons that got rid of the older or current spartan interface. For now it has not shown up on the public version of WhatsApp for iOS, so the above updates could indeed be a long way off.

What do you think?

Phones › Instagram Copies Snapchat Even More, Introduces Instagram Direct by Codedboy95(op): 8:16am On Apr 12, 2017
After successfully cloning Snapchat Stories, Instagram is looking to one-up its competitor in chat with a reimagining of its sleeping giant of a private messaging feature, Instagram Direct. Rolling out today to everyone, Instagram Direct will now combine disappearing ephemeral photo and video messages with traditional permanent text and image messages in the same one-on-one and group threads.

You’ll be able to send silly short-lived selfies embellished with creative tools and temporary replies to friends’ Stories inside an on-going conversation that could include texted logistics or discussion of public posts.
https://www.droid.ng/forum/upload/new-direct.png

Back in November, Instagram launched ephemeral messaging in Direct as a separate section from permanent messages. But after seeing Direct usage spike from 300 million to 375 million monthly active users since then, it decided that disappearing messages were popular enough to give the spotlight by uniting the two communication types in a single inbox.

“Direct is our best friends experience, for just goofing around on the couch and sharing with your best friends” says Instagram’s Product Lead for Sharing Robby Stein. It turns out 85% of people’s Direct messages already go the same three friends, with the average group size being two to three. Baking Instagram Stories’ stickers, doodles, and overlaid text into Direct could make those conversations fun in ways SMS can’t.

https://www.droid.ng/forum/upload/snap-share-price-instagram-direct.png

While Snapchat’s ephemeral messaging feature does let you save specific messages in a thread, it defaults to deleting everything and the design makes it confusing what stays. In my hands on testing of the new Instagram Direct, I found it intuitive to rapidly switch between formats in a thread, and useful to have some of the thread available to look back on.

The stock market seems to see the new Instagram Direct as a serious threat to Snapchat. Snap Inc’s share price droppd 2.79% as soon as the Instagram news was announced.

“Direct is important to us” Stein says. “There’s a shift happening right now . . . with a generation where the main way they communicate is their camera.”

The Most Underhyped Messaging App

https://www.droid.ng/forum/upload/instagram-direct-ephemeral.png

[q]The old ephemeral Instagram Direct was a separate row of bubbles above the inbox. Now disappearing and permanent messages are combined into one list of threads[/q]

instagram Direct launched broken back in 2013. It only let you start a thread with a photo or video, then text chat about it, but you couldn’t actually send image replies. Direct messages were more like a private posts and comment threads. But two years later once it’d hit a surprising 85 million users in 2015, Instagram fixed it by allowing back-and-forth visual discussions.

That update jumpstarted its growth, and by November 2016, it had 300 million active users. But by then, Instagram had seen how teens were taking to Snapchat for rapid-fire ephemeral conversations. They’d endlessly trade jokey selfies and video clips instead of typing. The camera is the new keyboard, and Direct needed to adapt.

But with so many people already on Direct, Instagram didn’t want to immediately upend the product until it was sure it had the right design. So Direct’s Product Manager Keith Peiris decided “First let’s put this at the top. Lets’ not change the laws of physics of the sharing ecosystem.” Ephemeral messages appeared as Story-style bubbles above the Direct inbox, with the traditional permanent threads below.

But that was “certainly a bit complicated” as I wrote at the time. Keith agrees, and now he tells me “given how much usage we’ve seen in it, we’ve decided to focus the entire Direct experience on visual messages.”

Ephemepermanence

The new Instagram Direct lives a left-swipe away from your homescreen feed. Each thread gets its own camera button for instant ephemeral sharing, plus there’s a big button at the bottom if you want to shoot first and choose who to send it two next. Gone is the row of bubbles above the inbox, which is a relief since it felt a bit like that “every app launches Stories” gag going around.

https://www.droid.ng/forum/upload/direct-thread.png

Inside the threads, the message composer is now split into two parts. In the middle is the black standard text entry box that also includes an upload button for sharing your existing images, plus an instant Heart button similar to Facebook Messenger’s easy Thumbs-Up. Anything you send from this box is permanent, and will always be visible if you scroll back up your thread.

Meanwhile, outside this black box on the left is bright blue camera button. This fires up the ephemeral camera where you can shoot photos, videos, and Boomerang GIFs, which you can then jazz up with stickers, drawings, and overlaid text captions just like Instagram Stories.

Anything sent from the ephemeral camera will show up in the thread with a big “View Photo/Video” button. If your friend is somewhere they can’t pay full attention or turn their sound on, they can leave it for later as long as they’d like. When they’re ready, they can tap the button to see the imagery full-screen. They’ll also have the option to replay it once until they leave the Direct inbox, just in case they missed it the first time. Views, replays, and screenshots are noted in the thread so you can tell who’s seen what.

After an ephemeral message is watched, Instagram tells me it’s deleted off the company’s servers, unless it’s been reported for a policy violation, in which case it’s deleted after its been reviewed.

Also in these threads are replies to Instagram Stories, which only last as long as the 24-hour Story is available. There’s also public posts you’ve sent directly to friends, like a meme posted to the permanent Instagram feed by a social media influence you might want to laugh about privately with friends.

The one thing you can’t do in Instagram Direct is send disappearing text messages, like the default in Snapchat. Instead, you’ll have to open the ephemeral camera, swipe right to the blank canvas, then add a caption and send it. It’s slightly clumsy, though. Instagram shows its age here, or at least the higher average age of its demographic compared to Snapchat. For Snap teens, everything in life is ephemeral, even trying to send someone an address. Instagram takes a more stately, or fuddy-duddy, approach depending on your perspective.

https://www.droid.ng/forum/upload/instagram-direct-mau-april-2017a.png

For those counting, Facebook now has Instagram Direct, Messenger camera, and its own Facebook Direct features for private visual chat. But no, you won’t be able to send messages between them. Instagram’s team, now housed a mile away from the main Facebook campus, says they still run very independently. The app is trying to do what’s best for its users, regardless of whether it seems redundant with Facebook’s other efforts.

“We’ve largely seen these products to be very additive within Instagram and overall” says Stein, explaining that Direct isn’t cannibalizing Instagram feed usage or Facebook’s other messaging products. At this point, it feels like Facebook Stories and Facebook Direct should be first on the chopping block if the company wants to scale back its assault on Snapchat, but it probably won’t. Though these Snapchat clones might irk some critics and long-time Snap loyalists, visual communication is the future and Stories are the new News Feed.

For Instagram, though, the ability to bounce between contexts makes feels naturally visual without sacrificing the utility of traditional messaging. You can act silly one moment and have it disappear, then talk logistics of hanging out the next moment without it all vanishing. Again, Instagram isn’t the inventor of either of these mediums. But it’s found a way to make ephemeral messaging intuitive enough for the masses.

Phones › Hackers Can Steal Your Password By Looking At How You Tilt Your Phone, See How by Codedboy95(op): 10:34pm On Apr 11, 2017
https://www.droid.ng/forum/upload/samsung-galaxy-s8-and-s8-plus-hands-on-aa-21-of-32-840x473.jpg

According to a team of cybersecurity experts at Newcastle University, the way you tilt your phone could be used by hackers to break into your device

When it comes to security and the protection of privacy, people often worry about connecting to public Wi-Fi networks, tricking face recognition technology, or bypassing fingerprint sensors. What usually gets left out of the discussion is the multitude of basic motion and orientation sensors that can be found inside most smartphones and tablets today. Well, according to cyber-experts at Newcastle University, we should be paying more attention to these sensors that we take for granted every day

According to the paper published by the team, they were able to crack four-digit pins with 70 percent accuracy on the first guess and 100 percent accuracy by the fifth guess.

Essentially, because most apps and websites don’t need special permissions to access the device’s motion and orientation sensors, malicious hackers could “listen in” on your sensor data without your knowing. Using the movement and the positioning of the device, hackers are able to guess not just your password but also where on the screen you’re interacting. According to the paper published by the team, they were able to crack four-digit pins with 70 percent accuracy on the first guess and 100 percent accuracy by the fifth guess. Considering most phones allow more than five attempts without serious repercussions, this is alarming news indeed.

Because every movement – tapping, scrolling, long-pressing – leads you to hold your device in a unique way, hackers could potentially use these standard sensors to monitor on which part of the page your touch is registered and what you are typing on your virtual keyboard. According to these researchers, unless you close down completely the app or the website that contains the malicious codes, hackers could spy on you even when your phone is locked.

The trouble is, however, there isn’t much that can be done right now. The team has already notified major tech companies like Apple and Google, but no one has come with a solution thus far. Unless they introduce sensors into app permissions and every single website, these sensors are likely to remain vulnerable.

What measures do you take to protect your privacy? Let us know by leaving a comment below!

Computers › Apple Suffers Dramatic Decline In 2017 Laptop Rankings, by Codedboy95(op): 10:18pm On Apr 11, 2017
https://www.droid.ng/forum/upload/apple-macbook-pro-with-touch-bar-15-inch-27-470x3102x.jpg

Apple’s move to include USB-C into its latest MacBook computers was unpopular with consumers, leading to a sharp fall in the latest yearly laptop rankings by Laptop Magazine. Apple had held the top spot in Laptop Magazine’s rankings since 2010, but in the 2017 rankings, it fell down to sixth place.

Laptop Magazine’s total aggregate score is measured out of six different critical areas: design, support, innovation, value and selection, and warranty. Apple’s computers got a score of 78 out of 100. This was due to its expensive price point and only having USB-C ports that made carrying dongles essential to maximize the computer, and nobody likes dongles. Otherwise, Apple performed really well in every other aspect.

“The company’s MacBooks are slim, powerful and well-built, but you’ll need a pile of money and a bagful of dongles,” wrote Laptop Magazine. “The company’s support and warranty options are second to none.”

https://www.droid.ng/forum/upload/LaptopMag2017.jpg

Taking the top spot from Apple is Lenovo. It jumped up from placing fourth in 2016 thanks to “groundbreaking technologies and vastly improved customer support.” Lenovo got a score of 90 out of 100. In second place was Asus jumping up one spot from third place last year—scoring an 86. Dell, HP and Acer rounded out the top five.

Samsung and Microsoft came in last place

Surprisingly, Microsoft came in last place in large part due to its lack of notable upgrades and steep price point. Samsung didn’t place that much better, being docked for its small computer selection all with middle-of-the-road ratings and disappointing tech support.

Phones › Looking For Big Battery Life? Think Ulefone Power 2 , Read Full Specification by Codedboy95(op):
Ulefone is a not too popular brand but trust me they make Good phones, at least i can say of the Ulefone Power, i have a friend who has been using it for over a year now and he never encountered any major problem, the only problem he ever had was with the battery which got dead and this was his fault in some way because of the way he used it, he is a heavy user and always charge and use. He got a replacement battery from aliexpress and since then hasn't encountered any other problem, I believe Ulefone must have worked more on the battery life in this newer model.

If you are in the market for a new, super affordable, and good performing smartphone, then one option which should be on your radar is the Ulefone Power 2. This is one of the latest smartphones from Ulefone and only very recently became available to buy. While there are a number of aspects to focus on, the biggest selling point on offer here is the price. As in spite of coming with some fairly impressive specs, the Ulefone Power 2 is available to buy at only $179.99.

However, if you want to literally save a couple more dollars, then GearBest currently has the Ulefone Power 2 on sale for only $177.99 – with of course, free shipping.

While the price is the motivational selling point with the Ulefone Power 2, make no mistake, this phone does pack in the specs for the price. However, the most impressive feature on offer is the battery life as the Ulefone Power 2 lives up to its namesake by coming equipped with a 6,050 mAh battery. A capacity that is almost double what you will find on most of the current crop of flagship smartphones.

Making this an ideal option not just for those looking for an affordable smartphone, but also those looking for a smartphone which can easily make it through an average day’s usage, if not two days.

If you are interested in knowing what else you will get for the money, then the Ulefone Power 2 is a smartphone that comes loaded with a 5.5-inch display and employs the help of a 1920 x 1080 resolution. Inside, this is a device designed to be able to handle everything you throw at it, thanks to the inclusion of 4GB RAM, 64GB internal storage, and a MediaTek MTK6750T octa-core SoC (clocking at 1.5 GHz). If cameras are more your thing, then the Ulefone Power 2 comes packing a 16-megapixel rear camera, as well as a 13-megapixel front-facing camera. While additional features worth noting include a fingerprint sensor, the already-mentioned 6,050 mAh battery, fast charging support, and Android 7.0 (Nougat) out of the box. The Ulefone 2 is currently available in black, gold, and grey color options, and network compatibility is listed as 2G: GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, 3G: WCDMA 900/2100 MHz, and 4G: FDD-LTE 800/900/1800/2100/
