Like Larride and Patrick said if a team is strolling around or decides to go defensive even when not necessary and the coach cannot snap them outta the trance they find themselves then what is he doing? What does he even tell them during practice? Or trainning classes?

We can blame the players all we like but Mourinho is the problem. Like Patrick said all these players where almost like monsters in their former clubs and all of a sudden they are lazy, lackadaisical and all what you would want to describe them but the buck stops on oga Mourinhos table.

I might have overused the defensive aspect to describe Mourinhos style but why is it that every time we want to buy a player, eg an attacker his defensive stats/ability seem to somehow take a huge part of discussion.

I think all these defending talk is not directly from Mourinho. He hasn't come out to say he wants players that can defend so we have to give him some benefit of doubt and not swallow everything we read here or elsewhere line hook and sinker.

What we should be looking for in a player is high work rate because modern football is about team attacking and depending together. Attitude when not with the ball matters as much as when with the ball. Check other teams, their attackers defend too by running after lose balls and closing down spaces. We can't say everyone should focus on his own side or role, it won't work. Look at how teams that have done very well in recent years play and you will understand my point. LFC has gotten to the final not just because they're deadly up front or their back line is sharp, but because Salah, Firmino, Mane, Chamberlain, Milner, Henderson etc won't stop playing or running throughout the game. Same thing with City Barca Madrid.

I will be glad to see Mourinho out of the club but I won't take beer parlour gist until I see fact.

Oga the defensive emphasis nonsense is coming from Mourinho abeg. They say action speaks louder than words. We can see what happens on the field na.

Real, bayern, city, barca, even liverpool and PSG will enter a match and you will see effort from the beginning that they want to win while our team will be strolling around the pitch like zombies only to concede and then up the ante. If we score first we mostly start trying to defend that lone goal while the other teams I mentioned above will all continue to attack even when they are 3 goals up, let's not talk about when the concede first. That's the point am making. We have said it on this board a thousand times. The only difference is that we managed to come 2nd this season but I am saying that system doesn't look like it will get is anything especially in the league.

We are stuck with Mourinho for now anyways. I hope he adjust his style towards more emphasis on attacking. I hope.

I don't understand how we have a coach who is obsessed with defending. Every player he wants to buy he first assesses the players defensive contribution.

Shouldn't it be the other way round, hevshoukd allow players do what they how to do best. Defenders should defend, midfielders should midfield and attackers should attack na and play players in their preferred position.

We know defending is important but it seems Mourinho has never heard of "attacking being the best form of defending" or has someone disproved that assertion.

Except mourinho's own assertion is that "defending is best form of attacking"

Maybe as we thought martial was doing well on the LW it wasn't enough for mourinho, unfortunately for us he is the coach and makes his decisions based on his assessment of the players.

I don't know what the problem is. This matter is simple. Whoever performs best in a position should play that position.

If Martial causes more damage from the left side, Martial should play there and Sanchez should go to RW or AM. And vice versa.

Wherever you find yourself in the team, try to create, assist or score goals from there instead of sulking that someone ousted you from your position. Sulking and being lackadaisical won't get you back that position. Unless you want to leave.

I can't really answer those your questions.

But let me say something maybe it will help.

As a coach, before I tell a player to go play a position that is probably not his main or comfortable position it is believed that I expect or believe he will at least give a decent performance, it does not have to be perfect but at least I expect he puts in a shift.

As a player if my coach asks me to play an unfamiliar position I will psych myself to do my best there and stop sulking or complaining.

The first statement is for Mourinho, why is he playing martial on the right? To accommodate Sanchez, because he gast to play him somewhere, because he believes martial can do a good job there etc only mou can answer that question, remember this is a RW where almost everyone has played from martial, sanchez, rashford, mata, Lingard, Lukaku, i coulda sworn i saw de gea there at some point. We as fans are hoping against hope that oga Mourinho will somehow get a proper RW player to help reduce our bp levels whenever we see people like pogba showboating in the RW

The 2nd statement is for martial who clearly feels he must play because he is martial and when played out of his normal position starts to sulk instead of taking it as a challenge.

My conclusion both Mourinho and martial need to be flogged. Mourinho more.

Because one player can play several positions and give decent performances does not mean the other player must be able to do so.

When a coach asks a player to play a different position from where he originally plays its because the coach has seen something in that player that he feels he would be able yo do it.

Asking a matic to be a center forward is either the coach is blind or a whole lotta players are dead for it to fall on magic.

Martial should fight for his position except he is saying Mourinho no like him face or doing tribalism or mourinho and Sanchez are in the same denomination in churh hence the favouritism.

That's the point am making! Over time it seems they have lost the impetus to continually and consistently believe that they can attack any team to win and its because they have been consistently fed that possession is key.

Imagine a coach telling his players that if you have possession opposition can't hurt you but does not emphasise attacking with that possession. Its a good excuse for lazy players to just sit and pass the ball in other not to lose possession. The first thing on the players mind is not to lose possession instead of starting an attack.

I don't really agree that the team is defensive. The players are just cautious or don't know how to construct good attacking moves. Attacks break down before they even start, not because they're defensive or the opponents are good, but because most times they play like they don't understand themselves or where their players are supposed to be when they're with the ball. Some hold the ball for too long allowing opponents to regroup. That's not defensive to me.

Being defensive or conservative was not really the point I was making. The players font seem to have the mind that every or most touch of the ball can lead to attack, there is no sense of urgency to kill off a game and the main reason with that attitude is because there is an instruction from the coach to either not lose or hold possession at all cost. That in itself will make players not be adventurous and would make them stay in their comfort zone to receive the ball.

It automatically makes everyone become boring (conservative/defensive) by default.

Imagine season ticket holders who go to OT every week to watch our matches shouting ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK!!!!

Its annoying and its because of the instructions from the coach. Has Mourinho not heard of "attack being the best form of defence"

Abi.. Putting on that jersey should mean drawing blood on the pitch, fighting to the finish, winning every second balls, making swift attacks before opponents regroup.

I don't believe players Dont want yo win things but a lot of their disposition on the field I believe is down to what the coach wants. I mean he picks the team to execute whatever he wants.

If a coach is attack minded and chooses attack minded players, it is very likely you would have an attacking team, but if a coach is conservative but also has attack minded players it is likely that the players would want to adhere yo the conservative instructions they have been given by the coach thereby limiting there attacking instincts.

We start a game at 0 - 0 and there is no drive to score but immediately we concede we see an attacking team.

We manage to score first and then we start to use style to park the bus because we have a conservative coach who wants to win with defensive masterclass nonsense.

But we all see how top teams attack right from the whistle and even when they go a goal up they Dont relent, they continue you attack and might decide to go defensive in the last 5mins just to hold on to a lead.

We have discussed this thing more than a 100times here Mourinho's conservative approach is the problem and not the players.

Imagine at 1 - 0 the instruction is to hold the ball and one attack minded player decides to have sense to attack and then loses the ball which results in an equalizer. Mourinho's presser that day and for the next week will be all about that player not playing to instructions.

Mourinho is the one that needs to change or be changed.
