It is not hard to understand why. The crisis in the western region tore the west apart, with one side on Akintola and the other on Awolowo's side. While in the north, the sardauna is both the NPC head, the premier of the north and religious leader. They have a herd mentality. Hardly any northern soldier will join to lead such a coup that will aim at their own leaders.
The east did not have that herd mentality and also didn't have factional leaderships as was the case in the west. Yet, the coup was communicated to others who even in the west who simply declined to join.
stop spreading lies..

Awolowo had nothing to do with anything.

read the quote below and have more understanding

raumdeuter:
Actually there was need for the Ibos

1959 to 1964 was a NPC(mainly North) and NCNC(Mainly East) alliance which ruled and formed the cabinet. By 1964 Akintola already broke away from the AG and formed his NNDP. Akintola already reasoned that this alliance was to the detriment of Yorubas since all the good positions were cornered by the Ibos and Hausas. To the level where even the Vice Chancellor for UNILAG and UI both in Yorubaland were Ibo men Eni Njoku and Kenneth Dike.
(I listened to Akintolas campaign speech of 1964)
The initial alliance between the NPC(Balewa) and NCNC(Azikwe) was broken and Akintolas NNDP became the new partner with NPC to form the NNA alliance. The NNA Alliance won the election thus Balewa and Akintolas party would be forming the new govt and the Ibos would be pushed into opposition. Akintola started replacing Ibos in the former govt with Yorubas from his NNDP. An example, At that time the tenure of Eni Njoku expired as UNILAG VC and Akintola ensured that Prof Saburi Biobaku was made the VC. This was too much for the Ibos to take and they reacted which meant Akintola had to be killed and those in the new NNA alliance

Wipe out to achieve what? Some of you are so damn myopic. SE did not wipe out the British who ruled them for decades during colonialism, but they chose to do that with the entire country without any military base in the region, or the population and power to subjugate the entire country. Some of you are just daft to think that that coup was an Igbo coup. Not even the Fulanis some of you dread can openly carry out such an act. Dem no born them reach. But you think Igbos who were well represented in government and military at the time would want to dominate the entire country through force. If that was the case, Ironsi would have moved all military wares to the east and strengthen it. Yet, that would have been foolish. But except, the corrupt west was behind them to destabilise the country.
You all need to start thinking for yourselves, honestly.
from the early 1900s even before Nigeria's almagation of northern and southern Nigeria.. Nnamdi Azikwe's father was working for the Bri:tish as a secretary and hundreds if not thousands of other i:gbos were also working for the bri:tish all over Nigeria because the Bri:tish favored them and not because other tribes were not qualified and un-educated.

why would igbos attack Bri:tish that favored them and in 1960 when the British left Nigeria they handed it over to the i:gbos..

it would have been very foolish of the igbos to attack the Bri:tish that favored them over other ethnic nations in Nigeria.

the i:gbos and igbo leaders of that era believed they had the population and power to subjugate the entire country but you are too igbocentric to see this and acknowledge it.

Don't i:gbos of this 2025 era also believe they have the power and population to subjugate the Yorubas and take over Lagos and its political structure or you are just too igbocentric to accept this

You’re absolutely right. The Igbos had no need for the coup. They held the officer cadre of the military, the Chief of Army Staff, the presidency, and the presidency of the House. Yet, a group of soldiers foolishly intervened in a Western Region crisis—a problem tied to Awolowo and his jailed cronies.

There was peace in the eastern Region with the economy adjudged as the fastest-growing in the world. The east was at peace with itself.
This disastrous meddling should be a brutal lesson for every Igbo: never intervene in battles that aren’t yours, no matter how much blood floods the streets. Let others fight their own wars.

The Igbo playbook going forward should be that no intervention if an issue has nothing to do with the Igbo race. Southern Nigeria only exist in the feeble mind of manipulators. The best interests is the interests of the only the igbos.
the i:gbos had need for the coup and greed fueled that need because they wanted control of the Western region revenues and institutions..

Eastern region does not start and end with igbos.. the Eastern region major revenue was not coming from the i:gbo dominated parts it was coming from Cross River, Port Harcourt and the present day Bayelsa state.

you are grossly mis-informed

They were the people remotely involved in the crisis at the time. Why didn't Awolowo's or his key men affected? Why didn't the coup plotter go after Awolowo in prison if he was a person of interest to them? It was for his benefit the coup was planned for. The northem leaders who became victims had connections with Akintola faction. And besides, there were issues even the north at the time the south west was experiencing wild wild west. The eastern region was not experiencing any political crisis at the time to necessitate involving them.
the coup was for the benefit of the ig:bos it had nothing to do with Awolowo..

the coup was too ensure igbos don't lose the federal jobs they had in Northern region and Western region as Ah:madu Be:llo was talking about hiring indigenes and Akintola was also talking about hiring indigenes.

That coup was not a secret coup. Several military guys from the south west were informed but they declined to join. The crisis in the western regions, and another in the north, necessitated the coup. The likes of FFK's father were corruption personified and was remotely involved in the crisis. And besides, the muteeners' were sympathetic to Awolowo's plight. The coup was carried out to take those men out. It had nothing to do with all politicians or leaders at the time. Try to understand the history based on the context. Nnamdi Azikiwe or any other Igbo leader was not remotely involved in the political crisis of the western regions at the time.
stop spreading stupid lies..

if military guys from the SW were informed do you think they would have agreed to kill the Premier of Western Nigeria..

what concerns Eastern region with the politics of the Western region..

so there were no corrupt igbo politicians for the coup plotters to kill in the Eastern region?

to you and the coup plotters only Western region and Northern region were filled corruption while the Eastern region was and is filled with angels.

That period in history was a time when young men and women had revolutionary ideas, not now that 50yrs old men and women are without any ideology or direction like pussies and woke feminists. That period was when boys and girls of 18–30 acted like real men with balls, and girls with intellect, not affected by flouride in their paste and water that diminishes their manliness and brains.
The idealogy of the time was pan Africanism and liberation movements. Those young soldiers saw a need to stop the chaos in the south western region–with Awolowo's freedom as their rallying point. This is very important note. If you miss this aspect, then you will miss all.
igbos that hate Yorubas with passion will attempt a coup to free Awolowo a Yoruba man... You igbos must think Yorubas are dull and lack sense to be spreading lies...

Awolowo was in Calabar prison... if they wanted to release him they would have done it after the coup during the 6 months they ruled for..

you igbos always lie hiding behind pan-africanism, ironsi abolished regionalism because he wanted access to funds in Western Nigeria while Northern Nigeria funds would have just been bonus because they were never a rich region..

Igbos had it all, so what are you talking about? Whether they formed the alliance with the north or the west, Igbos were well placed and represented in politics and military. So, and with the newly found oil in the eastern region, no other region could have matched them. So, what power do you think they needed? Some of you are just stupid and wicked parroting lies.
That coup happened because of Awolowo and nothing else. And the coup wasn't a secret one. Several military men especially in the south west were informed but most declined to join. There was no Igbo conspiracy involved. The crisis in the South west was a concern to a lot of vibrant people, both civilians and military, at a time youths were very vibrant and fighting colonialism and corruption in the African continent. It is not like now that 50yrs old men are stupid and cowardly and do not have any revolutionary ideas.
If you want to understand history, you must study and put yourself in the era of those who participated in that history. Don't use you 2025 logic. You won't get it.
igbos never had it all..

in some countries.. government jobs are exclusively for the indigenes, that's the point Bello and Akintola were trying to make..

from the early 1900s even before Nigeria's almagation of northern and southern Nigeria.. Nnamdi Azikwe's father was working for the Bri:tish as a secretary and hundreds if not thousands of other i:gbos were also working for the bri:tish all over Nigeria because the Bri:tish favored them not because other tribes were not qualified and un-educated until 1960 when the Bri:tish left..

their white collar employment had nothing to do with Ahmadu Bello and Balewa. since they already had those jobs before independence and continued on the jobs after independence so Ahmadu Bello, Akintola were working towards replacing i:gbos who had federal jobs in the north and western Nigeria...

having jobs is different from controlling the companies or institutions that create those jobs...

Despite i:gbos having most of the federal jobs all over Nigeria the regional jobs and institutions were controlled by the indigenes and Western Nigeria created more regional institutions, companies and agencies than other regions and i:gbos like Azikwe were covetous towards Western Nigeria's institutions and wanted control of Western Nigeria and its regional institutions which i:gbos till date are still trying to grab control of states in the SW...

Not true. That is the job of the NFF administrative team and not the coach. The coach has specific duties.

Let us not take Siasia's resourcefulness as a norm.
In countries like Nigeria, Siasia's resourcefulness should be a norm especially if a person believes people are sabotaging him or her..

A person can never be sabotaged financially unless that person does not know other legal means of getting funds..

Let me still rephrase myself again.

At this point in our history with the NFF, I believe we are with a ring of people that are not patriotic or detribalized in their judgment.

I believe, Amunike's ethnicity played a part in so many rejections from the NFF chamber.

I also used his open sabotages he dealt as the reason to back my belief. It was too harsh and consistent. Giving Finidi the job over him was still the continuous sabotage he has dealt with when it concerns the NFF.

To chip in, Oliseh didn't understand the challenges Keshi was dealing with and thought it was all smooth. When he got in and saw how bad things were, he had to scream out and leave. Keep in mind, Oliseh was also sabotaged. His CHAN team was a crazy one. Oliseh was spending thousands of dollars of his personal money to feed the team. Peterside Idah said he flew to South Africa, paid the CHAN team a visit in camp and Oliseh begged him for money to feed the players.

However, Amunike's own was long and severe. I believe some bad eggs in the NFF are tribalistic.
It has nothing to do with tribalism and if it had anything to do with tribalism then there's always a way around it as long as it relates to finances...

Oliseh and Amunike are both from the oil rich and gas rich regions of Nigeria.. if they issues with funding the team they could have reached out to their state governments or wealthy individuals interested in sports or football for support..

In America, the NCAA is funded through corporate sponsorships, ticket sales e.t.c..

Oliseh and Amunike could have gotten corporate sponsorships... but majority of Nigerians believe the government agencies must do everything when the same government agencies have repeatedly shown that they do not care

I am having no conflict of opinions. My stance is arrest and remand in prison is an overkill. She was dismissed, and this is appropriate punishment. If not that the case has already gone far, she surely would not have laid her hand on any child in the next school that employs to avoid a repetition of what led to her dismissal in her previous place of employment.

As for the mother, I still insist she failed her child. Why did she have to go to her pastor to report? Why didn't she go to the school authorities directly, or if she doesn't want issues, confront the woman herself? Which right thinking parent will see this and keep silent? It was likely the pastor that insisted on reporting to the school because she was too cowardly to face her own colleague at work. Vulnerability has nothing to do with this
Arrest is not an overkill... Luckily for the woman she is Nigeria where people chant unity and overlook violence just to maintain the illusion of unity...

the woman committed a crime of assault against a 3 year old, crime as a result of hatred against Yoruba people..

the woman should be spending at least 5 - 10 years in prison..

As usual, about 90% of people on political issues on nairaland are usually from within the same circle arguing in support and indirectly in support of the topics but pretend to be against the topic, at the end, they are saying the same thing having wasted time for hours to deceive and confuse themselves the more.

This is one of the reasons some elites said we cannot leave internet commentaries to depressed, selfish and propaganda people, otherwise, they will confuse our youths. During Abacha Era , I was living in Abuja, at the then Church Village (no longer in existence), Our leader, an IBO man said there is nothing in Lagos again. He said Lagos is just like any City in Nigeria. By then, they abandoned Lagos. All the infrastructures abandoned. They gave ultimatum to all Embassies to leave Lagos. They gave ultimatum to Banks to relocate their Head Offices to Abuja and Oil companies to where they have operations. They said they will dredge River Benue and Niger to Atlantic Ocean and move Lagos Port to Lokoja and many things. I will stop here for now.

POWERELEC NIGERIA 2025 is taking place there from nextweek Monday. They should use this information on nairaland to inform POWERELEC NIGERIA 2025 ORGANIZERS that POWERELEC NIGERIA 2026 is taking place at Landmark Centre Portharcourt.

ABACHA tried it but he died in the process. Lagos is a Spiritual City but exploited, cheated and maligned by NIGERIA. The Eternal Order of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church established by Saint Moses Orimolade Tunolase in 1925 was having meetings with Angels at the Lagos Beach for years. In the Heavens and Marine Kingdoms, Lagos is one of the Cities recognized. Not all the towns and Cities in the world are recognized in Heavens and in the Marine Kingdoms. The Solomon’s Seal which is a symbol of Israeli Flag (Triangles) stands for Triangular Forces – The Sun, The Moon and Star which controls everything. The Triangular Foces is established in Lagos. Lagos has Three International Boundaries RECOGNIZED in Heavens and Marine Kingdoms which are Land , Sea and Air. In the Lagos Markets, daily, you find people from different countries and planets and Marine Kingdoms interacting.

They came to Lagos with nothing and became Millionaires and Billionaires, yet speak evil of Lagos. Even the Accra Ghana they run to, they never realized that the Native Accra people Migrated from IFE.

If Jonathan had gotten the opportunity of second term and started Lagos Calabar Coastal Railway in 2016 we would not have gotten this kind of propaganda. Somebody reminded me Jonathan would have started the Coastal Railway Project from Calabar and not Lagos because the 8 years of Yaradua Jonathan government never had any project started or completed in South West but Yoruba kept quiet. This man cannot selfishly and singlehandedly frustrate the Protection of Victoria Island and the entire Lagos Island. The construction of Great Lagos Wall (2) to protect the area from Atlantic Ocean attack, Atlantic City Phase 2, Coastal Road and other benefits cannot be left to chance this time around

The relocation wave is surging with intensity. Landmark Group has boldly uprooted and shifted its entire operations. One can only hope that the dominant Niger Delta-owned banks and oil giants will seize the moment, relocating their headquarters—or at least a significant part of their operations—to Port Harcourt. Failure to act now risks leaving the region vulnerable to the next toxic chapter of political neglect and economic marginalization as the proverbial cock crows its timely warning.

Due to numerous inquiries in the thread.PH was part an parcel of the Eastern region. PH was originally developed to evacuate coal from Enugu. PH was originally called Igweocha.

They are absolutely losing their minds over a business that coughs up N10 Billion per year in taxes relocating to PH . Imagine the chaos if bigger players like Access Bank, UBA, Zenith Bank, Seplat, Nextoil, or even the Zinox Group decide to pack up and leave too. Lagos is living on borrowed time, and the clock is ticking.

Word on the street is that even Dangote is fed up with Lagos’ endless drama. Rumor has it he’s planning to move his main HQ to Abuja and rent out his Lagos office once it’s finished. If that happens, expect BUA to follow suit, and Lagos will finally settle into the role everyone’s been envisioning: the economic hub of Yoruba land and little more.
lapintoz:
This is where your ignorance comes to fore.

Compare and contrast the GDP value added of Landmark recreation centre and the Lagos Calabar coastal road to our economy and tell us your conclusion.

Before, Landmark, we had the bar beach, Tarkwa Bay, Oniru Beach, Lekki Beach, Alfa Beach....all supporting vibrant SME businesses and are no more......has the GDP of lagos state deteriorate because of this?

That's why I like Reno, he knows how to make the obi.goats look very stupid in their wrapped innuendos.
kettykin:
What GDP are you clinging to? Lagos is an economic graveyard. Telecommunications companies are bleeding to death. Manufacturing is are going with unsold inventory climbing to the roof, with breweries and pharmaceuticals rotting away. The aviation sector is on life support—only four airlines left, and even Tinubu’s First Nation couldn’t survive the carnage. Banks are staring into the abyss, one step from collapse. Malls, supermarkets, and eateries are gasping for air, crushed by diesel costs. Hotels? Reduced to desperate short-let hustles to stay afloat.

The city is dying, and apart from the Lekki axis, the rest of Lagos is an economic wasteland crawling toward oblivion.
Ask those in bariga. Ogba, iyana oworo, iyana oba, Abule egba , ikeja, gbagada, Anthony axis.

The only flicker of economic life in Lagos is in the Lekki axis—everything else is crumbling into ruin.

the FG now having access to revenue it normally did not have... now meant that the revenues from Agriculture from those regions was now used to build schools, hospitals, roads, stadiums, civil service buildings, governors lodge, senate houses e.t.c. across the whole country..

if the FG was to carry along with them then that means the FG would have to give the former regions at least 90% of the revenues and abandon building schools, hospitals, roads, civil service buildeings e.t.c across the whole country...

the abolishment of regionalism indirectly is what led to the development you see in Abuja and northern Nigeria today...

if regionalism was not abolished.. you won't see the smooth roads, state and federal schools, state and federal hospitals e.t.c. you see in northern Nigeria and some other parts of Nigeria today..

I get your point which still resolves around mismanagement. A good manager won't let go of their means which was Agriculture just because they discovered crude oil.
Nigeria did not let go of Agriculture...

it was the regions that were making money from Agriculture and funding agriculture in their regions..

once regionalism was abolished and oil became more established and the FG now controlled the former regions revenues from agriculture then the regions could no longer fund the agriculture that made them money because the FG started giving them a small percentage of the revenues they were making from agriculture..

if you own a farm and were investing ₦5 billion into the farm yearly then someone comes and takes control of your revenues and that someone starts giving you ₦50 million yearly to invest in your farm won't it affect your farming business...

would you say you have mis-managed your farm?

Don't allow sentiments to overwhelm your reasoning.

because people are saying the withdrawal of Colonial masters denote Progress in Africa, this can never be true. For a fact, most of the achievements and Structures we have today are those laid down by our colonial masters. They architectural transformation were vaped from the the foundation that was made by the masters.

The withdrawal of colonial master only favours few, mostly those in Politics and Military. If the Colonial master had stayed longer, we would have been far better than South Africa by now. That's a fact. South Africa is like Little London. I couldn't even tell the difference apart.

Some of u here would say i av a slave mentality(Stockholm Syndrome), but that's not true. The narratives that our colonial masters came to oppress us were propagated by those that wanted power for themselves.

All those shouting Colonial this and that, cut ties this and that, control this and that, they are all like my elder sister, she(flexible personality) would support something with passion cos people are supporting it and would tilt to the other side if the majority around her are standing there...

When the Brit:ish left Nigeria there was no university in Nigeria.

before the br:itish left Nigeria, the Br:itish did not build one university, our number of primary and secondary schools were very low, br:itish did not build smooth roads all over Nigeria , no housing estates, no plans for clean water for communities, majority of the private companies where owned by the br:itish and they only gave Nigerians clerical work which is what the education system they gave us is meant to produce office assistants.

All the developments you see in Nigeria today from Abuja to lagos to calabar to Akwa-ibom to oyo to Enugu e.t.c are all built by Nigerians, our parents, our grand parents e.t.c the br:itish left Nigeria to rot.

Everything you had and have the privilege of enjoying in Nigeria was and is through the hardwork of your parents, grand parents, and other Nigerians.

england did not build primary schools, secondary schools, universities, health centers, hospitals, stadiums, technical institutes, vocation centers, maternity hospitals, pediatric hospitals, sports centers, housing estates, roads e.t.c. all over Nigeria between 1830 and 1960 and after..

they took the billions they made from Nigeria and other places they colonized and used it to build england they did not use it to build Nigeria and the other places they colonized.

if England had remained in Nigeria, Nigerians would have been extremely poor and much poorer than they are now...

Can you put more light to the bolded. Thank you.
it was less than 6 ethnic nations before 1966..

After 1966 until crude oil was well established.. it was main wealth from Western Region and Calabar/Akwa-ibom that was shared to over 200 ethnic nations so both the Western Region and Calabar/Akwa-ibom could not use their wealth to spread developments across their regions .

As at when cru:de oil was found in other places... crude oil in Bayelsa, Delta, Rivers, Akwa-ibom, Edo, Ondo is shared to every state in Nigeria..

so money meant to develop one state is been used to develop 36 states...
