omohayek: Not a single even half-economically literate answer in the whole bunch, just lots of wishful thinking masquerading as wisdom. With whose money are you subsidy-reversers planning to operate? Are any of you even aware that more than 80% of FG revenues are already commiitted to servicing the interest on loans, and the severe consequences defaulting would instigate? And anyone thinking a CBN governor can work miracles in 48 hours might as well wish for unicorns jumping over rainbows with pots of gold at their ends, that's how ridiculously fantastical such thinking is.
It's useless answers like these that make it impossible to take most criticism of Tinubu on here seriously. 99% of you moaning and groaning don't have the first clue about what Nigeria's problems really are, not to speak of any meaningful ideas about how to tackle them. Really? Mental. |

Politics › Re: Blame Buhari Not Tinubu For Economic Hardship, Sanusi Tells Nigerians by CodeTemplar: 9:43am On Feb 12, 2024 |
omohayek: Where exactly was Tinubu supposed to get the money from to "put in place to cushion the effects"? You already read that the reason Tinubu was forced to (partially) remove the subsidy in the first place was because the FG could no longer afford it! Did you not bother to read where Sanusi said debt servicing was already eating up nearly 100% of government revenues?
The harsh reality is that Nigeria is broke, and international interest rates have skyrocketed since Buhari went on his 8-year borrowing spree. Nobody was going to lend money to Nigeria to squander on a foolish subsidy scheme whose biggest beneficiaries were smugglers and the citizens of other ECOWAS countries. The only other source of funding left without raising taxes is simply to hope you can print more money faster than people can demand higher wages and "palliatives", and this attempt to paper the cracks through printing more money is what is causing the skyrocketing inflation we are seeing right now.
There is no magic wand that could have prevented hard times from befalling Nigerians. If Xi Jinping in China and Joe Biden in the USA can't shield their people from higher interest rates, it isn't the president of a dirt-poor Third-World country who can manage the feat. Nigerians would still be facing hard times right now even if Tinubu and all his cabinet members had Nobel Prizes in economics, and neither Obi nor Atiku could have done any better in providing "palliatives" without accelerating inflation.
If Tinubu is to be faulted, it is for his institution of half-measures that will needlessly prolong this crisis, out of a fear of public backlash. Despite all the moaning and groaning on here, Tinubu has not really abolished the petrol subsidy, he just (temporarily) reduced the amount, and with inflation accelerating, the scale of the subsidy is ballooning once again because petrol prices have not been deregulated. Tinubu has not allowed Cardoso to raise interest rates to a level that will curb inflation and draw foreign investment. Finally, Tinubu has not made any serious effort to reduce the FG's wage bill by launching an ambitious privatization programme. All of these things are vital to restore investor confidence and kickstart growth, and Tinubu knows they are necessary, but he is so paralyzed by fear of even worse public reaction that he has now settled into tinkering here and there instead of giving Nigeria the strong medicine it needs - and yet ignoramuses like you whine endlessly as if he had a magic wand that could painlessly solve all your problems overnight. Lame attempt at defending a collosal failure. His only area of expertise and competence is dirty politics of grab and run away with it. Pilgrims will go to their pilgrimage this year with money we do not have even though a lack of pilgrimage won't kill any soul anywhere. He still approved gifts and needless structures to appease political figures. Waste going on in MDAs remain unchecked. Traditional corruption largely remains. Any talk about using almost 100% of revenue to service debt is a very wicked lie going by the above list of leakages. What world bank and IMF are pushing for is a system based on production and not consumption. It isn't a big deal for more organised and advanced nations, but for a spineless nation like ours where your likes can perform poorly and still retain their job as long as they appease some powers, that order is too tall for Tinubu. He has no plans to tackle real issues bedeviling us. Security has barely improved. Extortion remains rife. Lawlessness is still very alive. Corruption is fledging(Betta Edu and OTO examples). Tinubu has next to nothing to offer us but asslickers like yourself serving him to protect and serve their own personal interests. |

Until we wipe out those his family members called bandit that hr brought into this country to outst Goodluck Jonathan, we ain't see nothing yet.
At least Tinubu has wiped out more kidnappers and bandits in his short rule than Bihari's eight years rule.
Am sure you heard Katsina state government crying like a baby some days ago, and Buhari is in that state. There was one specific incidents where they beheaded dozens of them close to Maiduguri. After govt realized the mess up can't be easily remedied with propaganda, they skillfully denied the identity of the victims. |

Shikena: The FG should declare a food emergency and make it an act of economic sabotage for any law enforcement officer or any citizen to stop and proceed to demand bribe from vehicles conveying agricultural products within Nigeria - no delay as long as they are not traffiking ammunition or dangerous products.
Also, why are the state governments not having their own food reserves too? As the Federal Government is opening up its own reserves to distribute food, states and LGs should also be opening their reserves too to compliment, and we definitely have abundance to alleviate the shortage but unfortunately, states governors are not interested or concerned, Abuja must spoon-feed everybody despite steady allocations. what of bandits?
