“There is nowhere in the world where there is no subsidy,” said Umar Mohammed, an economist who works in a multi-national company in the United States. “The reason why small and medium enterprises are collapsing in Nigeria is that there is no subsidy for them at all. They pay for light through their noses, and in most cases, electricity is not even available and they have to use diesel or petrol. Nigerians must also provide their own security for their business premises. Above all, they pay multiple taxes.
“This is not the case elsewhere. I have worked in at least four countries – Germany, Russia and the United Arab Emirate (UAE) and the difference is clear. Governments provide the enabling environment, constant electricity with various options, all in an effort to make people live a fulfilling life,” he said. Correct talk. Every serious nation has subsidy to maintain competitive edge. |

The oil sector has been in this current state for many years now, so why didn't it impact so negatively on Nigeria until now?!
FOOLS!!! they allowed him print money to spend and make the govt look capable in the short term. After printing what happens next is another story. |

grandstar: Do you know the policies that brought Venezuela and Lebanon to their present state?
For Venezuela, basically too many subsidies, from a heavily subsidized currency to subsidized consumer go9ds and lastly, heavily subsidized oil which is smuggled to Columbia.
Tinubu ended the last of the fuel subsidies, that of petrol and saved $10bn. The government now wants to end the last subsidy-that of electricity. Tinubu is doing just the opposite of Venezuela.
You also mentioned Lebanon- what brought it to its knees?
Lebanon has weak governments that can't make decisions, especially tough ones.
When a government is weak and cannot make tough actions, it resorts to heavy borrowing, no different from what Buhari was doing. When you refuse to cut spending, you start borrowing to make up for the shortfall.
Lebanon debt to GDP was a whopping 200%. The prime reason for this was a bloated Civil service which needed pruning but it was untouchable. The economy was one waiting to bust. The blast was the last straw.
Tinubu has made the tough decision of not only ending subsidy, but he also ended the forex subsidy at the official rate. This has saved the country over $12bn.
How then is Nigeria like Venexuela or Lebanon? why has subsidy not crushed Saudi and UAE or Kuwait? You ignore the root cause of a disease and blame the symptoms in the sufferers for exhibiting those symptoms instead of handling the disease. Corruption and poor management is why subsidies choke nations. The world over, subsidy is a tool to outsmart your competitors nationally. Only here will heavily subsidized countries tell averagely subsidized ones to cancel subsidies and they will obey because of fiscal rascality. |

grandstar: You are the tribal person here! You see things in a tribal light and perceive everyone else will.
So, Nigerians were not tribal when they voted for Jonathan? He won all states of the Southwest except Osun state (Aregbesola was still very popular then) and they did not vote for the ACN candidate Ribadu. You start shouting tribalism when it suits you
Did OBJ not try severally just to increase the price and met great opposition? Is OBJ Ijaw? Was he from a minority tribe like the Chibok? Most Yorubas applauded Oshiomole's frustrations of OBJ's oil price increases.
Jonathan failed to carry the nation along that he would remove the subsidy and deregulate the price. The nation just woke up on January 1st, 2012, with the announcement that the subsidy was gone and price fully deregulated.
Who does that? Where's the wisdom? He should have started sensitizing with stakeholders that he would remove the price after he won the 2011 elections. Heavy consultations with the state governors and stakeholders should have been had on how to end it. Oshiomole who was now a governor realizing his mistake could have reached an agreement with the NLC. I fully supported the deregulation then and now.
OBJ did a very poor job of enlightening the population of the need to end the subsidy and fully deregulate the price. That military man in him preferred to impose things on the citizenry rather than work through consultation. The same Oshiomole who fought him hard upon becoming governor realized that the subsidy was costing the nation dearly and short-changing all 3 tiers of government.
This is 2023. Times are different. It is glaring that the petrol subsidy is adversely affecting the country. Buhari's wasted 8 years has exposed the unaffordability of the subsidy, costing about a quarter to a third of the budget to finance.
Also, Tinubu, Obi and Atiku all stated they would remove it. So, what's the problem here? Is it because it was a Yoruba man that eventually removed it? If it needed to be removed, it should irrespective of who actually did so. according to you, obj and gej did poor jobs of enlightening the people but Tinubu who backdated it with one month did a perfect job. It is clearer now who you are with. |

grandstar: Which bank will lend you $20bn to build refineries in a country where the refined products are subsidized, sold below cost? You want them to lose their money? You think they are the Nigerian government? Which bank borrowed us the one used to build useless railways to Niger republic? Which one borrowed Ebonyi the one they used to build a dormant airport? The way you lie senselessly to push through policies of a weak govt is alarming. Which one borrowed Dangote funds to build refinery (a record one at that) in a country where petrol was being heavily subsidized? Whenever you are desperate to push through your anti subsidy argument, you make it sound as if the refiner are being forced to sell directly to customers at the lower price the govt fixes. The govt actually buys at prevailing market price and pay the difference between the subsidized rate and the real cost. That's why the subsidy paid out per litre kept changing over the decades of the subsidy. Like I said before, I is easy to see where your interests lie and align to. The marketers want to sell at Intl price even when they don't have to transport it far from the location of exploration and employ cheap labour to refine the petroleum. |

nairalanda1: Hmm, this one is opposing traditionalists right to practice their religion because it isn't his religion...Islam.
At the end of the day, you must learn to tolerate all religions. You live in a secular country, not a Muslim or even for that matter Christian country. So, until Ilorin becomes an independent muslim country, you have to tolerate the religion of the traditonalists too...just as many traditionalists have tolerated Islam and christianity over the years in this country, Muslims even tolerate christianity in their region and christians tolerate mosques.
Anyway, I don't have a dog in the fight. there is nothing like a christian or Muslim country. Countries don't have mind of their own individuals do. Calling a country Muslim or Christian connotes intolerance and suppression of personal conviction of people who don't share that belief. The issues with religion is when people go beyond gathering together to worship among themselves to trying to claim public spaces they share with those who don't share their believes. This has led to a mob of thieves and killers holding key aspect of national life to ransom. They (extremists) think their goal is to project their religion above other religion materially. It is about your spirit and soul which outlives this material world. That's why it is wrong to have a country tagged Muslim or Christian one. |
