Health / Re: Ebola: Lagos To Deploy Healthworkers To Sierra Leone by CoenzymeA: 3:56am On Oct 21, 2014
mizizM:
Why must we politicize everything?

Pls reason with me

1. Until ebola is eradicated in sierra Leone (SL), the risk of someone travelling from SL to Nigeria to reinfect is just a flight away. The US thot they were immune until the same thing happened to them. We are not free and safe in our 'cocoon' until SL is free of ebola.

2. SL obviously cant handle this scourge and that is partly because contact tracing is poor and health facilities are overwhelmed

3. Structures are not the problem alone but medical workers and know how too.

4. Lagos state & Nigeria had a mock exam that they passed. They have 2 options here - Wait for the big breakout to come to Naija or go to the source to help them contain it. Nigerians on ground can also keep an out eye for Nigeria.

5. LSG cant force anyone to go to SL. They will ask for volunteers (who will be handsomely paid). These volunteers will be moved by greed or companion or a need to do something other than complain on NL.

6. Volunteers who have counted the cost will then go to SL to join the fight and hopefully win it there before it comes back to a country of 170 million people.

7. 99% of Nigerian will curse you for even asking them to volunteer for this project but, there are few people with the heart of M. Theresa and Ghandi who want to help. If LSG can coordinate them and send them to the epi-center then let them go.

8. All health workers coming back to the country will be placed in quarantine for 21 days to ensure they are not infected. During this period, they will continue to be paided their volunteer 'gbem' salary.

9. LSG is not a separate entity from Nigeria, but that doesn't stop them from offering help without jumping the hoops of bureaucracy in Abuja. They were touched by this first hand and would naturally understand and have more compassion than others who only heard with the hearing of their ear. Just ask Fashola and he can tell you how many sleepless nights he had during the ebola period while we all slept snugly in our beds.

10. I think we need to give this a chance. Imagine if all the expatriate health workers were discouraged by their countries from coming to help Nigeria? Imagine if all the local health workers who eventually joined the CDC team to tackle ebola were discouraged and disparaged by their families. IMAGINE IF NO HEALTH WORKER STOOD UP TO WORK THE NIGERIAN EBOLA CASES because of comments and attitudes just like these?

You have my respect for this intelligent write up. We all know that the best form of defence is to attack. If we fold our hands and not do all that we can to stop it from the source sooner or later it would come back to us in drones. It has been predicted that by December there would be more than 10,000 new infections per week. With our porous borders how do we think we can prevent it from re-entering our country? Everything doesn't have to be politicized. This is what a government with foresight would do to protect its citizens not the fire brigade approach we did the last time.

I remember like 4 months back, Doctors without Borders warned the World of the need to contain Ebola quickly, but nobody paid any attention thinking it was none of there business; now they know better. Someone has to take the leadership initiatives to do something to save our race from this monster and we all need to encourage and pray for them and not all these selfish statements that people are making. May God bless and protect all who are involved in the fight against Ebola.

on top of what now? Haba! This is too much. You people should learn to be tolerant of one another, and if you must criticize do that constructively without resorting to personal abuses.
rickkid: At least in my case, there was a condom and two consenting human adults of reasonable intellectual ability. You however, come across as the unfortunate result of forced experimental intercourse between a Ghanaian with Downs Syndrome and a moderately intelligent Ugandan Silverback Gorilla; a filthy, unholy union facilitated by a mad German scientist working out of a top secret location in Ilejemeje, Ekiti, SouthWestern Nigeria. The product of such a union was only ever intended to be a test subject, an abominable curiousity which would spend its life being prodded and poked by needles and electrodes; "Press Button A to make subject ask for a peanut, Button B to make subject have sudden, explosive diarrhea on itself" was meant to be the soundtrack to your rather bleak existence.
But alas! Fate had a twist to throw as Dr Josef Hitzlesperger contacted a deadly haemorrhagic fever from one of the apes he regularly engaged in unspeakable acts with and before this antichrist died, he chose to enact one final hate crime on the world by turning you loose into the forested wilderness to the South West of the Niger.
And that is how you came into the world, you vile, worthless product of illegitimate monkey ejaculat1on.

This new drug you people keep talking about has been mentioned on Nairaland since 2011. It is the same as colloidal silver you can order from anywhere. I wonder what the hype is about it been invented by a Nigerian. I'm sure the people who have used colloidal silver in Nigeria or the distributors can tell us whether they've had successes in treating viral infections with it or not.

oluafolabi: LOL. So many dumb Nigerians! I tell ya. Many of them actually think that Nano silver is a drug that was just invented by the Nigerian. grin grin . Nano Silver is even used in washing machines.

I see you're not in Nigeria that is why you feel so comfortable misinforming people. How many people have you heard that health workers infected in Nigeria except those that had initial contact with Mr Sawyer's secretion through whatever means? (Airborne, fomite etc). The other new infections could have been family members of the health workers or people on the same plane as Mr Sawyer. Please stop misleading people in your faraway America and let Nigerians on ground handle the spread of this disease properly.
Moreover, if you feel it is a natural instinct for them to run due to some perceived threat; your duty is to educate them on what to do so as not to further spread the infection. Everyone is tensed now and are looking for information concerning this disease. Your posts would only further complicate issues.
19naia:
they cant fool people who feel healthy ,into not trying to flee health care workers from the government, when in Nigeria it still remains that health care workers are the ones who first spread the disease in Nigeria and they are still the primary source of it in Nigeria after it came with the Liberian man who also came with "Government" envoy.. The Liberian was not fleeing, he was doing his job unaware of his situation. Further, Look into Sawyers profession and his relatives profession, Sawyer was a government related worker and i suspect health related workers had contact in or were his family as they mingled in government circles over concern and counsel about the Ebola crisis in Liberia and Co.. If the suspects feel healthy and have health care workers coming to detain them under suspicion, they are just as well founded to run from the healthcare workers for fear that the healthcare workers will infect them...

I never stated or stand by the Idea that the volunteer health workers sacrificing to help you don ebola victims, are deliberate intent to spread the disease. They are doing a work of good intentions but it is not as easy as they believe and they themselves can and are doing more unintended harm as is proven now by the spread of ebola in Nigeria by the well intended yet miscalculated health care workers.. Remember that if those professional control and quarantine systems/protocols work as you keep insisting, then answer how it is that Nigeria has Ebola on the loose in community environs from the very health workers you continue to say have it under control and should not be feared or avoided like a source of ebola?

I don't assume every Nigerian is bad, i know many good ones all over the world and i know many bad people from USA, and many other countries, the worst person i had encounters with was an american as a matter of my opinion.. What i will stand by ,is quarantine from the chronic disease of corruption and negligence in Nigerias Organized government and economic culture where big money and power are congregated... I have stated my view and you have stated yours and you have that space to do so without me trying to stop you.. But it wont stop me from standing by what i have stated with hope to learn about a better way for the Pandemic of Ebola..

I am happy for those who will take caution towards the healthcare workers and try to stay away from them.. Naturally, if some one was feeling ill and thinking they had Ebola, instinct is not to run, they will seek health care..
My suspicion is the people running are feeling well and fearing infection from the hysteria gripped healthcare workers... Simple as that and a life saving common sense/instinct no matter what kind of rationalization authoritarians try to put to it.. they didn't steal or kill and they dont want to be killed by good yet blind intentions going blundered....

With people thinking this way, I now believe that Nigeria has a bigger problem. From time immemorial contact tracing has been used to combat epidemic of this magnitude whether they've been confirmed or not. The same thinking drove Patrick Sawyer to Nigeria and you can see what we have on our hands. So Sir, good luck to everyone cos I don't even have the strength to argue with you. SMH for Nigeria.
19naia:

the gross speculation is to chase those people around under speculation that they are infected.. Its speculation to say they are infeected until they are tested.. Furthermore.. It is the doctors and nurses of your so called WHO and CDC impeccable procedure/protocol that are becoming confirmed infected and at risk of spreading to their very own patients and even the suspected patients who are not eveon infected..
Two american doctors, one liberian and one Nigerian nurse and doctor..

Its disoriented to think people should not even consider running from Ebola doctors and nurses when the doctors and nurses are the only ones Confirmed so far to have it... The confirmed reality is that the Health workers ,chasing down innocent suspects, have the only proven cases of infection among themselves... The non speculative confirmed cases in Nigeria would lead any clear considering person to stay away from the health authorities who run around chasing Ebola and catching the disease themselves.. if they haven't proven that they don't catch the disease themselves in the treatment and quarantine environment, its only speculation for the health officials to say they can keep patients from cross infection..
.. People aren't wild animals to be chased down like vermin under the speculated suspicion that they are infected... the health workers are the ones most proven to be the ones likely to have the infection and spread it to their captive patients or innocent suspected patients..

19naia: Everybody knows it has no cure and the disease cannot be treated.. They will just be isolated until they die and being in Nigeria, its normal to fear for your life when people come looking for you because they fear you spread death on contact..
Also Nigerians don't like to face bad news, they say a prayer and tell themselves only what they want to believe even when the bitter truth is sitting on their face.. So they may also be running from the diagnosis for fear it will be bad news.. In Guinea, there are villages running from health care workers and forbidding the health workers from entering their village because they believe the health workers brought the disease from the very beginning..
If they run for over a week with no symptoms, then they are justified because nigerian quarantine authorities would do something stupid like quarantine all ebola suspects in the same facility to share same toilet and bath and everything.. That will keep the outside society safer, but it will allow the one suspect who was the only one with Ebola, to infect the rest of the non infected suspects in quarantine.. after this, the officials in charge of quarantine can just tell the world that the ebola suspects were all infected and congratulate themselves for saving the public.. Never underestimate the incompetence or simple unwillingness of Nigerian authorities to not blunder even the best of intentions and as a result, cost innocent people their lives..
If they have the well being and strength to run, then thats a good sign of good health, they best protect themselves from the mental illness of the delusional do-gooder authorities trying to save them or society as a whole...

In essence everyone who has had contact with infected person should start running? In as much as you have a valid point, is it not better for few people to die than for the whole nation to be wiped out? I don't mean to be insensitive as we are all in this together, but this attitude would cause a total breakdown of our public system: health, economy, social etc. Go and ask the Liberians and the Sierra Leonians. This not a time to trade blames but proactive steps by all and sundry to curb this common enemy. IMHO

ifekemmy: Ki oju ma ri ibi, gbogbo ara ni ogun e, if na me too i go run

God forbid, that would be wickedness on your part just like the Liberian man that brought it into the country. You'd be exposing more innocent people. Please be your generation/ race keeper. Who will remain if we all die? Please people should not be selfish. If you read the account of the American doctor that contracted the disease while taking care of victims you'd be amazed at the sense of responsibility he exhibited. He immediately isolated himself when he started having the symptoms pending the outcome of the test. That is the way to go!
IMO the relative names should be publicised so that they can be fished out before they wreck more havoc.

As we speak, what are the measures been put in place in all the local government areas to combat this imminent catastrophe in terms of setting up Ebola treatment centres and mass campaign to all the local people in the hinterlands? Has the Federal Government released funds for special training of health workers that would be responsible for these patients? amedave: I don't think you know anything about medical school in Nigeria, before these people start complaining they should first review medicine curriculum. in my school a medics does everything an anatomist, physiologists, medical biochemist all do in four years you as a medic do them in just 18 months and expected to be more grounded read more than 3 different authors for each. now tell me what can any of these do DAT they can't do?. in clinical it still follows you do different postings so you have idea about everything. this curriculum was design for the doctor to head because he has idea in almost all field. so if they don't want it they should review the curriculum, I don't tink is the pharmacist that prescribes drugs for you when you go to the hospital do they? plssss Nigerian s let's leave cheap sentiments

Have you also taken time to review the curriculum of the Pharmacy Schools? All those courses you mentioned they also take, so don't come here and start forming superiority. You prescribe drug because that is your duty as it is the duty of the pharmacist to ensure that what you prescribed is the right drug for the right patient. So why are you guys fighting tooth and nail to prevent him from becoming a specialist in that field? So that you can keep covering your asses when you kill people by prescribing wrong drugs or wasting patient's money?

Consultant is only an English term for a specialist in a field, and we have them in other fields that are not even medically related. I don't know why some educated "illiterates" would think it is only the prerogative of the Medical Doctors. I write with so much passion because some old consultant in a private practice who didn't see the need for a Pharmacist prescribed the wrong drug that eventually led to the demise of my Mum. Until Nigerians begin to sue and demand huge settlements from you guys like they do in Western Countries you'll not take other people serious.

NWANICHODE: Doctors have to wake up before these drop outs from medical school hijack the health sector.

The question is why are doctors so scared of allowing other professions to be involved in patient care in Nigeria? The major reason is so as not expose their incompetencies. When all they do is trial by error in diagnoses and drug prescription. My mum died of heart complication because one "Consultant" in the hospital didn't know that TCA's are contraindicated in people with certain heart disease. A lot of people die prematurely or stay longer on admission from complications of drugs or not giving the right patient the right drug. Furthermore, because they are always doing trial by error they constantly change medications for patients which causes unnecessary wastage and make Nigerians who are already hard pressed financially to spend more. Fact is, studies have been conducted in other countries by their insurance companies concerning these issues and they fought for multidisciplinary approach to patient care. Apart from this, doctors had to comply because of fear of litigation where patients know their rights and sue them for high settlements for any mistake they make. In this situation doctors would do anything that would help minimize errors.

They feed the uninformed public with false information to garner support trying hard to preserve their "almighty" doctor image. The truth is that change is difficult to make, but you cannot stop it. Before Columbus, it was thought that the Earth was flat, and scientists who proposed that it was spherical were scorned; the same goes for the current gay rights that is gaining popular support these days.

Finally, so long as Nigeria belong to the comity of nations doctors and decision makers can only stall, but definitely this is what they would have to accept sooner or later.

NB: I know of people who were withdrawn from a Pharmacy School and went on to become doctors elsewhere, so there is no big deal! Come down from your high horses for the general good of the patients who your swore to take care of.

In Olamide's voice - E o ni duro! ABU is 7UP the difference is clear. For those who are saying the pictures by the OP are not true representation of OAU well, someone uploaded on spot assessment a couple of months back and those pictures are not anywhere close to those we saw of ABU now. Growth is a continuous process and once you stopped growing others will over take you. OAU might have been more beautiful in the earlier days, but now ABU has overtaken. Maybe ten years from now after they have rejuvenated their landscaping then we can start comparing. What you guys are seeing now of ABU is the result of more than ten years of commitment. If you've never been to another person's farm you'd think your father has the largest farm.

In terms of academics, ABU graduates can hold their ground against anyone from any school in Nigeria. I have shamed people who wanted to play the school card on me, during my intern-ship and NYSC; at the end of the day they all wanted to retain me. ABU graduates are humble, discipline,hard-working and they know their onions- at least I can speak for myself and my friends. What I'm saying in essence is that you guys should stop the braggadocio already and just try to be the best in what you do, and not being deluded by the glory of the collective. Thank you.

Nigerians mocked over the Alleged fake sign language interpreter at President Nelson Mandela's funeral service.

Nigeria's image internationally has been so battered to the extent that any mention of scam else where in the world is linked to Nigeria. There have been an out cry by the international deaf community over what they say was a fake sign language interpreter. They said the interpreter was simply making up his own signs. The structure of his hand, facial expressions and the body movements did not follow what the speaker was saying.

Read the full news here:http://news.yahoo.com/outrage-over-sign-language-interpreter-madiba-memorial-082056835.html

Reading comments from people on this issue saddened me, as they started taking swipe on Nigeria due to our notoriety in e-mail scams now popularly referred to as Nigerian Prince. This is not a Nigerian case, it happened in far away South Africa. Why should Nigeria be mentioned in this? It is such a shame that a country so endowed with natural resources, intelligent and hard working people has reduced itself to this type of ridicule. Please Nigerians let's put our house in order, else nobody will take us serious any longer. Long live Nigeria!

Yet, we have a lot of them out there who can change our country for the better but are not given the opportunity. Nigerians like to sensationalise absurdities instead of addressing them. Have the parents reported to the police? If they did not get a favourable response from the police, have they gotten a lawyer that can fight the case legally? Is it Twitter, Facebook or Nairaland that will become human beings to resolve the issues?

I don't know who is lying or telling the truth but I see no reason why I should lose sleep over this matter when those who are primarily involved refuse to do the right thing.

The case is more complicated than you think, because they have turned your child against you. Remember she is not operating in her normal senses. It is hard to explain, but the girl will come out and tell the public that it is her choice and since she is an adult no court will rule against that.Just around early November last year, a beautiful half cast lady from Delta state got married to a senior officer in Federal Poly who already had a wife. This was after a long run battle with the parents of the bride. It a common occurrence in Bida.

I lived in Bida for 4 years and can confirm to you people that this is not new. A lot of greedy Christian girls have been lured into this trap by Nupe men especially if she is light skinned and beautiful. Once you accept money and gifts from them, they charm you and suddenly you become Aisha or Halima and the scenario above plays out. The girl runs away from home, the father objects to the union and Etsu becomes the father and gives the girl out to the old man that charmed her. In this Pastor's case, the girl just suddenly converted to Islam. I believe they didn't tell us the whole story. There must be an old man with 2-3 wives somewhere she wants to marry. A sound of warning to parents! If you have a beautiful girl don't let her go to Federal Poly Bida. If she must go, warn her NEVER to collect money or gifts from any Nupe man. A word is enough for the wise.
