Kano – The National Association of Resident Doctors of Nigeria (NARD) will start a nationwide strike on Thursday, June 9, the National President, Dr Muhammad Askira, has announced.

Askira told newsmen in Kano on Tuesday that the decision was taken at the ordinary general meeting of the National Executive Council of the association held between May 30 and June 5 in Jos.

He said “16 out of 58 federal tertiary institutions or centres were exempted from the initial centre based strike for the commitment of the Chief Medical Director of the hospitals to implement the Federal Government’s directives.’’ He said if by midnight of Sunday, June 19, their demands were not met, all the members of the association, including those exempted, would join the indefinite nationwide strike.

Askira said the association found it necessary to take the painful decision following the inability of the government to meet its demands. “Due to the failure of the government to address the demands of NARD, it has declared a total and indefinite strike. “NARD has to take this painful decision in order to highlight the plight of our hardworking members who have had to endure a long period of deprivation and disenfranchisement,” he said.

He said the association would continue to be open to discussion and ready to partner government to ensure effective health care service delivery to Nigerians.

New militant group responsible for the bombing of oil facilities in the Niger Delta region, the Niger Delta Avengers, NDA, on Tuesday, said claims by the Nigerian Military that no fewer than 10 of its suspected members were arrested on Sunday, was false.

The Nigerian Army said it arrested 10 suspected militants and pipeline vandals in the Niger Delta region, on Sunday. The Commander, 4 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Benin City, Farouk Yahaya, while addressing journalists had said that the the Nigerian Army arrested 10 suspected militants and pipeline vandals in the Niger Delta region, on Sunday.

Yahaya had said the suspects were arrested during a cordon and search exercise conducted in Oporozoa community and its environs in Delta State. However, Mr. Yahaya, a Brigadier General, said the arrested suspects may have links with the Niger Delta Avengers. He said guns, ammunition and other equipment were recovered from them.

He said the operation was conducted professionally in line with the code of conduct and rules of engagement of the Nigerian Army. He said the Army is committed to tackling pipeline vandalism in the Niger Delta region.

But in a tweet today, via its Twitter handle, @Niger Delta Avengers, the militant group said: “Our attention has been drawn to the arrest of 10Niger Delta Avengers boys by Nigerian Military. None of our Strike Team has been arrested. It’s all lies.”

Militants, Thursday, blew up Chevron Nigeria Limited’s onshore oil facilities in the Niger Delta, forcing the company to shut down its operations. This was even as the price of crude oil rose above $50 a barrel, for the first time in nearly seven months as a global supply glut that plagued the market for nearly two years showed signs of easing.

The disruption in Chevron’s operation was caused by the Niger Delta Avengers, who claimed the bombing of the facility’s mains electricity feed. The group said they blew up the Escravos tank farm main electricity feed pipeline.

The group declared that its decision to bomb the facility was because Chevron ignored its warning not to fix a pipeline they had bombed earlier in the month. Industry sources said that Escravos onshore production accounts for roughly a third of Chevron’s total output, on average 3.8 million barrels per month (bpm) in 2014.

The company’s projected exports for the first half of 2016 averaged 167,000 barrels per day (bpd) or about five million barrels per month. . Reports claimed that Escravos production was already down by more than 40,000 barrels per day after a May 5 militant attack on a Chevron offshore facility, adding that increased violence over the past few weeks had also made international buyers more reluctant to buy Nigerian crude due to fears of loading delays and cancellations.

Meanwhile, as a result of the unrest in the Niger Delta,l as well as crisis in Libya and wildfires in Canada, which had reduced global crude oil out by about four million barrels per day, the price of crude has risen above the $50 mark.

Specifically, benchmark crude oil grade, Brent, was up 36 cents at $50.10 a barrel, the highest in nearly seven months, after a larger-than-expected draw in United States’ crude oil inventories last week indicated buyers are starting to mop up spare supply. U.S. crude futures were up 29 cents at $49.85 a barrel, after touching $49.97, the highest since mid-October. Reports stated that at abbove $50 a barrel, oil was seen by many market players as breaching a psychological barrier that could lead producers, particularly among U.S. shale companies, to revive operations scrapped in recent years.

The trial of the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki resumed at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, on Wednesday with the first prosecution witness, Michael Wetkas, admitting that some of the evidences he tendered before the tribunal against Saraki were incomplete.
Saraki is currently facing a 16- count charge of false asset declaration while he was the Governor of Kwara State.
At today’s resumed hearing, Wetkas, an operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, alleged that Saraki did not declare a property he bought in 1993 during his assets declaration of 2003.
Wetkas said, “Saraki on 16 September 2003, did not declare a property he purchased in Maitama, Abuja in 1993.”
He alleged that Saraki acquired the property through his company, Carlyed Properties Limited.
When asked by Saraki’s lawyer, Paul Usoro, SAN, to verify exhibit 20, a letter by the EFCC asking the Abuja Geographical Information System, AGIS, requesting for information on the property Saraki did not declare, which he tendered before the tribunal, Wetkas admitted that the commission tendered an incomplete evidence.
Wetkas said “I believe that in the course of administrative work and numbering some parts went missing.”
Usoro, further established that Saraki, in an attempt to ensure transparency in his transactions, gave the power of attorney, meaning – the authority to act for another person in a specified or all legal or financial matters – to both Akao and Allied Properties.
Wetkas, in his testimony, also stated that according to Exhibit 125 and 126, the original Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) and all other supporting documents of the Maitama property in question, were in the name of David Baba Akao.
On further cross-examination, Wetkas further accepted that Allied Properties, a company that was registered on 15th March 1992, also received another C of O, from former FCT Minister, Nasir El Rufai, in its name – making the Federal Government charge against Saraki, devoid of merit.
