Officialenny1:I have a 60 year old cousin who has the condition but you will not know unless they told you. He was born before screening became mainstream, so can we blame the parents ? The op said his brother is only 16, so what will we say about the parents ? Mistake ? Carelessness? Ignorance ? Illiteracy ? |
In summary dear Nairalander, It is much too early to expect oral cancer from an HPV infected vulva you had contact with a few months ago. Most healthy young men who come in contact with the virus ,get rid of the virus via their immune system. The unlucky ones who can't clear the virus, may develop cancer but only after several decades. So if you see a 70 year old with oral cancer it could be as a result of a contact he had in his 30s or 40s. So, please take your mind off HPV and cancer. You're only having a guilty conscience. |
A nairalander recently sent in an email about his fears of HPV oral cancer after oral-genital contact with multiple partners. Hello Dr. I've recently been reading online and nairaland about sucking women down there leading to cancer of the mouth. I've done this multiple times with at least 30 women over the last 5 years. Recently I have been feeling strange in the mouth sir ....should I be worried ? What can I do Sir ? My reply: Please go through these FAQs about oral cancers Q: How Common are HPV-Related Mouth and Throat Cancers? CH: Fortunately, these cancers are currently uncommon, with about a 1.7% chance for men and a 0.7% chance for women. The risk factors include multiple sexual partners and socio-economic status. Q: Have These Cancers Seen an Increase in Recent Years? CH: Yes, from 1988 to 2004, there was a 225% increase. Currently, we observe an annual increase of 5%. Q: How Often Are People Exposed to HPV? CH: HPV is prevalent, infecting approximately 65 to 100% of individuals, especially those with more than four sexual partners. Q: How Long After an HPV Infection Does Cancer Develop? CH It usually takes at least 10 to 30 years for the virus to transform and lead to cancer, making it unlikely to be linked to recent sexual partners. Q: Do All Oral HPV Infections Lead to Cancer? CH: No, the majority do not. About 90% of related cancers are attributed to HPV16, affecting approximately 1% of the population. Q: What Are the Symptoms of Oral Cancers? CH: Symptoms are often benign, with most people discovering a painless neck mass while shaving. Other symptoms may include difficulty swallowing or ear pain. Q: Where Do Most HPV-Related Cancers Present in the Mouth? CH: They mainly present in the back of the throat, specifically in the tonsils, base of the tongue, and the soft palate. Q: Who Is at Greatest Risk? CH: Men in their 40s to 60s, non-smokers, individuals with high socio-economic status, and those with more than four sexual partners. Q: How is HPV Spread? CH: It is primarily spread through sexual contact, especially through MouthAction from a man to a woman. Q: How Important is it to See a Specialist for Diagnosis and Treatment? CH: It's crucial to consult a head and neck cancer surgeon for diagnosis and to involve specialists in radiation oncology, medical oncology, and speech pathology for comprehensive treatment planning. Q: Is an HPV-Related Cancer Treatable? CH: Yes, it is highly treatable, with a 90 to 95% overall survival rate if detected. Treatment involves surgery, radiation, or a combination of both. Q: Will the HPV Vaccine Help Prevent These Cancers? CH :While we're optimistic about the vaccine's potential, its impact will likely take decades to manifest fully.
