We’ve all heard how Mediterranean, Japanese and other traditional diets can work wonders for our health, but what if the tables were turned? In a bold new experiment, researchers asked Tanzanian men to swap their plant-based, fiber-rich diets for a Western-style regimen filled with calorie-dense, processed foods. It took just two weeks for the shocking effects to show up in their bodies — and the consequences lingered after they returned to their normal ways of life. For the study, researchers from Radboud University and KCMC University in Tanzania joined forces to investigate the effects of a diet swap on 77 healthy young men from rural and urban Tanzania. Participants who regularly ate traditional Kilimanjaro diets were instructed to switch to a Western diet, which included foods like beef sausage, fried chicken, pizza, potato chips, white rice, macaroni, eggs and very few fruits or vegetables. The results were alarming: after just two weeks, the men gained an average of 5.7 pounds. Their blood also showed an increase in inflammatory proteins, as well as metabolic changes linked to chronic conditions like heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Worse still, their immune cells became less effective at fighting off dangerous pathogens, making them more vulnerable to infections. Even after the participants returned to their usual diets, some of the negative effects lingered for up to four weeks, highlighting how short-term dietary changes can have lasting consequences, the study authors noted. The study didn’t end there. Researchers also tested what would happen if participants who typically followed a Western diet switched to a traditional African one. These men followed a traditional Kilimanjaro diet for two weeks, which was packed with vegetables, fruits, legumes, brown rice, whole grains, roots and tubers, as well as fermented foods. Meat consumption, typically limited to once or twice a week, primarily involved local free-range chicken and fish. Researchers observed the opposite effect in those who switched to the traditional African diet. These men experienced a reduction in inflammatory proteins and positive metabolic changes in their blood. ALBANY, Ore. – Two Chinese nationals were arrested in connection to a scam that nearly bilked an Albany resident out of more than $37,000 earlier in February, Albany police said. According to Albany Police Department, on February 3, a resident called police to tell them that sometime around Christmas he believed he had gotten a virus on his phone from advertisements on the Solitaire app he uses. The victim told police that he had been getting calls from a “Chris Wilson,” an alleged employee from PayPal who told him his personal information had been compromised. Police said the victim was eventually connected to “Eddy Cooper” and “Mack Jones,” who claimed they worked for the financial department of Edward Jones and told him he had “been hacked into” for $37,500. The victim said he was told he needed to deposit that amount of money to “mirror” the amount taken so the transaction could be voided. Albany police said the victim deposited $10,000 into a bitcoin kiosk while on the phone with “Mack,” then was advised to have the rest of the money at his residence to be picked up by a courier to complete the transaction. Albany police said that at this point the victim became suspicious and called police. APD said officers and detectives worked to arrange a sting for the scammers the next day, February 4. Police said that at the arranged time, a vehicle showed up with two suspects to pick up the money. One suspect, an Asian man who police said identified himself as “Tom,” provided a passcode to an undercover officer who verified the passcode. Police said “Tom,” later identified as Yong Xue, 32, was quickly arrested after a short chase on foot, and the driver, identified as Zhen He, 36, was also arrested. Both were sent to the Linn County Jail on charges including aggravated theft and conspiracy to commit aggravated theft. Albany police said both suspects are Chinese nationals, and the Chinese consulate was notified. Police said the FBI and the Assistant United States Attorney were contacted and are assisting in the investigation. Albany police said they believe Yong Xue and Zhen He could be involved in more fraud cases.

techaboki:A hospital isn't a business. It's a basic necessity. No one should have to pay for that. The amount of money one crooked politician swipes in a day could pay for medical care for probably millions of people. The amount of money lost when one foreign company doesn't pay a fair price for one shipment of natural resources could probably do the same. Let's place blame where it belongs.

This makes you think about so many things. But it reminds me how people joke about how Jamaican education isn't for the faint of heart, and how demanding it is compared to American or British schools. People keep talking about Asia, but many Asians (whether east or south) think that their education system is garbage because they're taught that there's only one correct answer. If nothing else, these schools would create good paying teaching positions, but I wonder how many would go to locals. |
