In the wake of an increased spate of criminality allegedly perpetrated by herders of Fulani extraction, many state governors, as federal government seems helpless, have come up with measures to curb the destructive menace of herders clashing with locals.

Fulani herdsmen, already tagged a terrorist group by many international bodies, has proven to have defied various security measures by the successive federal governments. From the era of Obasanjo to Yar'dua, Jonathan and now, Buhari, they have continued to wreck havoc leading wanton killings and destruction of properties.

Farmlands worth several millions of naira have been destroyed and in extreme cases, the owners of these farm lands, for daring to protect and stop the herders incursion to his crops, paid with their lives.
More worrisome is the fact that few, if not none of these criminal and marauding elements masquerading as pastoralists have been apprehended, tried and sent to jail to serve as deterrent to others.

At the peak of Fulani herdsmen onslaught in Benue, Agatu community to be precise, the state governor, Mr Samuel Ortom rose to the occasion and drafted a bill he called 'anti grazing bill' to the state house of Assembly.
The law upon confirmation, was aided by a state-controlled security outfit called 'livestock guard'.
The livestock guards in Benue were operating within the ambit of the law as a result of the state criminalizing open grazing.
With this, they were empowered to go after herders caught grazing openly.

A recent interview granted by the governor of Benue state, he stated that no fewer than hundred of Fulani herdsmen have been arrested, tried and serving their jail times as a result of violating the anti open grazing law.

As herdsmen continues to bring their unwholesome trade to Enugu state, allegedly resulting to several deaths and clashes, the state governor has reacted swiftly by proposing the formation of what he called "forest guards".

While we commend the state government for coming in defence of locals that have been overpowered by the armed criminals under the gab of pastoralists, we wish to state, without mincing words that we are at loss on the primary functions of the guards meant to guard the forests.

How will the guards comfortably wade off the onslaughts of these marauders when there's no law criminalizing the movement of herdsmen, or should I say, the open grazing of cows?
Are the guards meant to be roaming the forests to safeguard the crops and homes of farmers?

We expected the state government to borrow an idea from her Benue counterpart by first criminalizing the open grazing of cows and then complement it by setting up guards to go after defaulters.

The last time I checked, states are empowered to make her own laws.
For instance, in Kano and other northern states, they set up Sharia law and complemented it with a security outfit called "Hisbah" police.

The Hisbah police are empowered to confiscate and destroy beer and other alcoholic drinks seen within it's jurisdiction.
What then stops our state government from taking a bold step by first banning the open grazing of cows before setting up guards to safeguard the forests?
State government should be made to realize that they are first accountable to the poor masses before anyone else irrespective of political affiliation.

The fight against the killer herdsmen must be holistic if we are being sincere to ourselves.
You can not set up guards to safeguard forests against people who, by the law of the state and the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria, are going about their normal and legal business.
Mr governor, 'no look face', ban open grazing and enjoy the support of your people.

The National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Enugu has fixed September 9, 2019 to deliver judgement in a suit filed by the APC candidate, Barrister Mrs. Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagwu challenging the return of Ike Ekweremadu as senator representing Enugu West in the Feb. 23, 2019 Election.

Also joined as petitioners is the All Progressive Congress (APC), with former deputy president of the senate, senator Ike Ekweremadu as 1st respondent, and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), INEC as 2nd and 3rd respondents respectively.
Newsportfolio reports that Hon. Justice H. Kerang who is the Chairman of the tribunal fixed the date after the adoption of the final written addresses by the Counsels to the petitioners and the three respondents.

The counsel to the petitioner, Barrister. H. Bello (SAN) urged the tribunal to cancel the election due to the failure of the 3rd Respondent (INEC) to comply with provision of Regulation 37 of the INEC guidelines for the 2019 Elections.
“It is our submission that the said guidelines are mandatory and omission done in non-compliance renders the exercise a nullity.

“The situation we have at hand is that the INEC put the cart before the horse. The senatorial result was announced on the 23rd of February, while that of the local government was announced on the 24th February; how can it be? This result is suspicious. That is why we are saying this result is void, and the collation should be voided”, said Bello.

In her final submission, counsel to the 1st Respondent A.J. Offiah, (SAN) urged the tribunal to dismiss the petition as it lacks evidence to proof both the civil and criminal allegations raised.
Counsels to the 2nd (PDP) Barr. Onyinyechi Ikpeazu (SAN) and Barr. Emeka Udeogba for 3rd Respondents, however concurred with Barr. Offiah, and urged the Lordships to dismiss the petition for lack of merit.

Newsportfolio also gathered that the tribunal equally fixed 3rd Sep. 2019 to deliver judgement on the petition by Rt. Hon. Eugene Odo challenging the election of senator Chuka Utazi repsenting Enugu North Senatorial zone.
5th September was also fixed for Hon. Ikechukwu Ugwuegede vs Hon. Dr. Pat Asadu representing Nsukka/Igboeze South Federal constituency in the House of Reps.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidate for Enugu West in 2019 general elections, Barrister Mrs. Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagwu yesterday 13th June 2019 testified before the National and state Houses of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Enugu.

Mrs. Ibekaku-Nwagwu presented documents before the Tribunal to support her claim of irregularities, electoral fraud and non- compliance with INEC Electoral Laws and Regulations during the election.

"The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in collaboration with INEC officials massively thumbprinted over 100,000 votes and the evidence I have here shows that the election results were skewed to favour the PDP candidate"

Documents presented by Mrs. Ibekaku-Nwagwu and were admitted by the tribunal in evidence were Forms EC8A1, EC8B1, EC8C1, EC8D1 EC8E1 and EC40G

She also presented .electronic evidence of five (5) video clips, ten (10) pictures and two (2) flash drives.

Earlier, some policemen were subpoenaed by the tribunal. In their statements, they admitted that the Smart Card Readers used for accreditation by INEC did not work in many areas.

However, the tribunal granted an objection raised by Ekweremadu's counsel against the presentation of an ad hoc staff as witness.

An agent from Ngwo-Uno who appeared for the Petitioner said that there were shortage of election materials ranging from ballot boxes, ink, stamp pads, ballot papers. He also reported that Card Readers did not work in most places.

Out of the witnesses listed by the petitioners counsel, sixteen have been called as at the time of filing this report.

Mrs. Ibekaku-Nwagwu is challenging declaration of Senator Ike Ekweremadu as Senator representing Enugu West zone citing massive electoral fraud and irregularities.

Ekweremadu who is going to the Senate for the 5th time lost Deputy Senate President elections of the Senate to Senator Ovie Omo-Agege on Wednesday 12th June, 2019 during the Inauguration and election of the 9th senate leaders.

The inauguration of the ninth assembly which took place on the 11th of June has come and gone but the events and proceedings are still worthy of discussion.
Senator Ahmed Lawan clinched the Senate presidency with Senator Ovie Omo-Agege clinching the deputy slot.

At the green chambers, Hon Femi Gbajabiamila clinched the speakership position while Hon Idris Ahmed Wase got the deputy speaker slot.
However, the aftermath of the NASS elections meant Igbos and South Eastern geopolitical zone got practically nothing.

The proceedings also highlighted the unpreparedness of Ndigbo in the polity and politics of Nigeria. The shameful outing brought to the fore, the lackadaisical and politics of vengeance inherent in this part of the country.

While the eventual winners of the NASS elections were vigorously campaigning and canvassing for votes, our lawmakers went holidaying, expecting to be handpicked and decorated with the winners medal.

The two high ranking senator-elects in the person of the immediate past governor of Imo state, Rochas Okorocha and his Imo counterpart, senator Uwajumogu who were in a better position to clinch the elective slots were tactically chased away from the national assembly complex with the court while Ndigbo watched and cheered.

Before the composition of the NASS leadership, South East had three elected senators on the platform of the ruling party APC which are Rochas Okorocha, Orji Kalu and Senator Uwajumogu of Imo north senatorial district.
But in a dramatic fashion, two out of the three elected senators had their certificates withdrawn, leaving the region with just a single member in a chamber of 109 senators.

I'm not a fan of Rochas Okorocha and his #iberiberism governance in Imo state but the role he was to play at the red chambers supersedes whatever ills that characterized the politics of Imo state.

Politics calls for a serious permutations and calculations. Gone are the days of ethnic jingoism and victim mentality.
Femi Gbajabiamila toured virtually all the states of federation canvassing for support but ours was to cheer as the only options with a brighter chance got schemed out by the very hegemonic cabals.

We readily cry of being marginalized but in the truest of the whole issue, we are the architect of our misfortune.
The South east has never hidden their hatred for the APC led federal government hence the indifference in the imbroglios that schemed out her bright prospects from the NASS leadership composition.

To compound the whole scenario, the region presented, or rather nominated senator Ike Ekweremadu for senate deputy slot. This is a senator that has held the deputy president position for a record 12 years. The same senator left a bitter taste in the mouth of the ruling party when he clinched his position through the back door at the composition of the 8th Senate.

He was rousingly defeated by his competitor thus seeing to a decline in his political influence.

At the moment, Igbos are left with no strong political force and a strong contender for the 2023 election even if it's zoned to the region.
To Ndigbo, the composition of the NASS leadership is a mere jamboree but to others, it's a warm up to the next general elections.

The dearth of politics of alignment has made the region to be more or less onlookers in the leadership composition of the federation.
At a point, we claim not be interested in the politics of the country but before one says jack, we are back crying of being marginalized.

The South west aligned, lobbied and were rewarded with ministerial portfolios despite enjoying the vice presidency slot.

Where went my brothers when the food was being served?

'40 seconds', a now in vogue phrase invented by the controversial nollywood actress Tonto Dike when she described her estranged husband's abysmal bedroom performance.
The phrase however, figuratively, has been used to describe anything abysmal and a not-so- impressive performances.

It's no longer news that governance in Enugu state under the stewardship of governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has become more or less a 'the more you look, the less you see' venture.
A governance where praise singers are recruited on daily basis to bamboozle the unsuspecting general public.

This is a government characterized by mindless braggadocio and steadily eulogized by people with vested interest in the state.
A government that's on the news on daily basis. Not that it's commissioning projects, but either receiving awards from various clandestine groups or attending public functions.

People residing outside the state are being fed with wrong and deceitful information that all is well in the state, but in the truest state of it, the reverse is the case. This is a government that has been repeatedly beating it's chest on ensuring maximum security in the state. They forgot so soon that the state wasn't a theatre of war when they took over.

In fact, security has worsened under their watchful eyes. Crime has heightened as political thuggery was elevated during the last election.
The PDP led state government has maintained a rotational leadership amongst the three senatorial districts in the state with past leaders prioritising development of their zones.

When it was the turn of Enugu north senatorial district to hasten the development of their zone via the election of Hon Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, he appears, as suggested by his performance so far, to be a flop and a parochial leader with a '40 seconds' leadership quality.

The only project that the governor has completed in his zone is a few kilometers Opi-Nsukka road. This he did, but not without defacing the entirety of the state with the project pictures.
While other neighbouring states are commissioning industries built by the state, ours is either receiving an inconsequential award with both hands.

Ebonyi state for instance has gone 'haywire' in it's quest to develop the state. The governor is either commissioning ultramodern market projects and other state of the art projects or busy wooing foreign investors into the state.

The only project that has seemingly caught the fancy of our dear governor is a 'world class' stadium in all the senatorial districts of the state. What's the rationale behind this initiative when the fire service stations the state embarked upon have been left uncompleted. The Orba 'world class' hospital project has nothing else to show except the signpost bearing the "proposed Orba hospital site".

The governor hasn't only failed his zone but the state at large.
We thought by now, Nsukka district would be wearing a new look. We thought by now, Obollo Afor, the eastern gateway to the northern Nigeria will be competing with cities like Zaria, Onitsha, Aba etc.

The latest achievement, according the government's praise singers is the relocation of some ESUT faculties to an unnamed location in Nsukka.
This only came after some barrage of criticisms from concerned citizens.

While they continue to cheer and make merriment over the 'proposed' relocation of faculties to Nsukka zone, they should remember the fact that the proposed 'world class' stadium project to be cited in Nsukka has yet to leave the drawing board.

It has been a condemnation galore since the special assistant to President Muhammad Buhari on diaspora issues, Hon Mrs Abike Dabiri Erewa 'exposed' the names of the recently nabbed bureau d' change robbers in United Arab Emirates.

For daring to 'expose' the names of the nabbed criminal elements, many Nigerians of Igbo extraction have corked their guns and already aiming at her forehead, allegedly for being too 'tribalistic' and 'divisive'.

Before you vent your frustration on the woman, ask yourself if she's the news medium that first reported the Dubai robbery incidence with the names of the culprits attached.

Why have we decided to leave out the substance of the issue to dwell on trivialities?
Did the said exposed names commit the said offense according to the Dubai authorities? Yes!!
What then informed our grouses? OK, she refused to 'expose' also, the names of other Nigerians, believed to be from northern and western part of the country that were recently executed in Saudi Arabia?

We should be concerned on the very fact that our brothers have become the largest exporter of crime.
We should be pondering on how best to checkmate the excess migration of our youths overseas.

Being in the aviation sector with the flight reservation desk, I can testify to the ugly trend of our youths mindless and obsession of abroad at all cost.
Even youths that can barely afford the mandatory PTA(personal travel allowance) are on the queue to purchase flight tickets to overseas with no clear destination or area of specialization.

Many have perished enroute Italy in what they termed 'Italy by road'.
From Dubai to Malaysia, Turkey, Bangkok, Cambodia etc, the story is the same.

We should be looking inward to identify the root cause of our problems, not lashing out at anyone for 'exposing' our criminal elements abroad.
What have our federal lawmakers done to address this issue of mindless migration?

On how many occasions have they raised a motion in the interest of the Igbo youths?
Why wouldn't the youths find their way out, to constitute nuisance and become vulnerable to crime when our rich brothers do not deem it fit to build industries in the region?

Rather, they opt for Kano, Kaduna, Sokoto, Lagos Abuja, etc to cite their factories and end up boosting the employment level of their host communities?.
Abike Dabiri is far from our problems. Let's look inward, instead of engaging in the ignominious act of dick measuring.

The number of our brothers in the prison in one Asian country dwarfs whatever numbers of Yorubas and Hausas on death row in Saudi Arabia.
Igbos, let's address our problems.
Both the cause and remedy are within us.

Imagine a situation where the PDP swept all the elective positions in the entire state.

The rigging was done without shame and conscience.

Enugu State indigenes under the umbrella of Coal City Diaspora Movement has called on Inec to cancel the National Assembly Elections held on the 23rd day of February, 2019.

In a strongly worded letter addressed to the National Chairman of Inec and signed by the Director General of the group, Barr Onuora Odo, the group alleged gross electoral irregularities which they claimed affected the outcome of the election in no small measure.

According to the letter,a copy of which was made available to our correspondent, the group urged Inec to cancel the National Assembly elections in Enugu State as same was characterized by violence and irregularities of unimaginable proportion.
Hear him, "we are calling on the National Chairman of Inec to cancel the National Assembly elections in Enugu State given the level of carnage, impunity and brigandage displayed by the thugs apparently recruited by the leadership of Pdp to mar the elections.

Mr. Chairman, it was a situation of complete anarchy given the level of cloak and dagger activities that played out during the elections.

Owing to the dwindling fortunes of Pdp in Enugu State arising from the poor performance of the current administration,they had no option than to deploy all their arsenals and resort to electoral violence and ballot box snatching.

A situation where thugs impersonated both the military and corps members to intimidate the people and manipulate the results is uncalled for.
In the light of the foregoing developments, we are calling on Inec to review and revist the National Assembly elections by cancelling the elections for a holistic reflection of the voice of the people.

Furthermore, given the level of intimidation and harassment displayed by the thugs acting under the ostensible authority of the leadership of pdp, we are urging Inec to beam their searchlight on the activities of this people during the March 9th elections in order to forestall further acts capable of breaking law and order.

While the rumbles and controversies that accompanied the yearly bazaar of Holy ghost adoration ministry Enugu seemed to be dying down, another scenario has played out thus igniting the fire of controversies.

Whether the statements allegedly credited to the fiery priest in respect to Mr Peter Obi's political ambition were misconstrued or not, the Catholic priest has tendered an unreserved apology to calm the frayed nerves.

What prompted this write up however, is the interview granted by one Rv Fr Benjamin Achi, the director of communication, Catholic diocese of Enugu.
Speaking in an interview few days ago, he said the church is apolitical and the church does not take any political position at any time.

“He(Mbaka) doesn’t represent the official position of the church because the church’s position has always been clear and that is what the position of the church has always been, and it hasn’t changed yet. Church officials don’t come out and make political statements or say things that might suggest that one political candidate is endorsed as against the other, no. It is against the church’s mode of operation.
It is against the church’s principles,” he said.

This new 'decree' seems to either be alien or uncongenial to the church or has a selective application and interpretation.

Where went the church when a mass was held at the adoration ministry Emene ground to celebrate the governor's victory at the supreme court?

Two high profile priests have endorsed the PDP's governorship candidate recently and the church looked elsewhere.

Another case of endorsement was on the 14th October 2019 when the spiritual director of Okunerere adoration ministry Nsukka openly mimicked the words of his Enugu counterpart.
Declaring that there is NO VACANCY IN THE LION BUILDING, Very Rev. Dr. Paul Martin Obayi, told Gov. Ugwuanyi that "you will govern Enugu State for 8 years", adding that the Adoration Ministry will support the governor's political ambition beyond 2023.

In the foregoing events, where was the now famous Church decree that barres priests from openly endorsing politicians?
Was the now famous church decree revisited because a political party other than the PDP is in the picture?

Why has the church suddenly found it's voice?
Is it not obvious that the church itself, through the Director of communication, is biased for applying selective judgment?
Why did the church keep mute when series of endorsement mass service were held in support of the incumbent governor only to rediscover it's voice the moment an opposition party came into the picture?
