Education / ASUU: Way Forward To Ending Strike Actions In Universities by crownbryan(m): 6:13pm On Oct 18, 2022
Following the recent suspension of the 8-months strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), it has become imperative to bring forward a lasting solution to end the recurring industrial strike actions in the Nigeria tertiary education sector.

Since 1990, ASUU has embarked on 16 strike actions over issue of unfulfilled agreements by the federal government of Nigeria. The embattled ASUU has repeatedly pressed home their demands with the same strategy without little or no result. Thus, it is the agitation of the education stakeholders that ASUU should chart a different route to hold the government to ransom in fulfilling its commitments.

On October 14 2022, students and parents breathed a sigh of relief after the strike, which started on February 14, was suspended. But stakeholders are worried that another strike may occur in a nearer future if ASUU demands are not met as agreed upon by the government in meeting with the Speaker of the Nigeria House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, who waded in on the matter after all negotiations failed.

How can these issues, centered on welfare, salary package and payment platform be resolved once and for all? The answer is to make Universities autonomous by generating its own income and overseeing its own affairs. However, not without a structure in place to phase out this current dependence on the federal government.

It would be unfair to compare Nigeria’s education system with the developed countries because our economies are far apart in strength. However, if we truly hope to have a robust education sector, we must follow the footsteps of countries running smooth and successful education systems with little or no government interference or support.

Many Public Universities in the UK are funded by a combination of central government funding, and tuition fees charged to students (or their sponsors). The arrangements are slightly different in each of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

In England, students typically pay a higher portion of the cost of the learning through their tuition fees, with the government making up the difference. However, in reality, the majority of students fund their studies using a government-backed loan, which they repay through the tax system once they have finished their course and are earning a certain amount per year.

From the academic year 2006/07, a new system of tuition fees was introduced in England. These variable tuition fees of up to £3,000 (₦1,309,933) per year are paid up-front as previously, but new student loans are available that may only be used to pay for tuition fees, and must be repaid after graduation, in addition to the existing loan.

In Nigeria, apart from state universities charging tuition fees, federal universities should also charge fee, generate other income and pay for itself.

The autonomy of universities is when the government removes its tentacles from higher education and focus on improving the economy and governance rather than divert funds to institutions that can generate their revenues. If the economy is good, purchasing power of parents will increase and artisans can live above average without university education.

Where public universities are not allowed to generate 100% their income, we will have many deadweight institutions taking up funds that could have been use for other vital areas of the economy. When management and staff of universities start to strategize on income stream and begin to be accountable, our institution will grow their infrastructure, academic-output and start to produce less mediocre results in the society.

These cannot be achieved immediately. It is a gradual adjustment in funding structure on the part of the government and the parents. Undoubtedly, this will mean increasing school fees and seeking funding from alumni, endowments, research patents sales and operating businesses within the school. In addition, schools will only be able to do this based on the value they offer to parents, communities, alumni bodies, companies and the economy.

The predicted outcome will be less mediocre people struggling to gain admission into universities as only those who actually have business to be in tertiary institutions will seek admission, and others can find their places in vocational institutions and other technical centres where they will get skills that will translate to increase in potential workers to boost the economy.

Universities autonomy would end ASUU having sole power to halt academic activities and disrupt the calendar. Also, public universities will eventually match up to their private counterparts in terms of research, education delivery, and ranking higher among top institution in the world.

Romance / Love Is Never Enough by crownbryan(m): 7:05am On Oct 27, 2020
Life can be a jack when it comes to relationship. We met that extraordinary-looking human with a gorgeous body, physically endowed from head to toes and looking like someone out of Hollywood cast. We could swear under our breath that we are going to marry this time, that this is the right person for us.

We took the first bold step with a lot of self-doubt, anxiety and adrenalin running through our veins because right then, our greater fear is rejection, and our greatest fear is also getting a yes. So, what next? Would we measure up to expectation, or would we meet what we expected? We began to put on a mask of what we are not, alienating our true self, suppressing every traces of bad habits that could ruin the person we have become in the face of a stranger.

We needed a hundred per cent approval of how perfect we are to qualify as a life partner. If we succeeded, we found love, and if we do not, we lust after.

Life is dramatic. Let’s talk about that feeling you had the first time you saw that unique person. He or she was looking all radiant, gorgeously dressed with a rhythmic movement that projected all that you have ever dreamt. It was okay to conclude that you were in love when you had not seen when she has no cloth on, no make-up or wig and when she is fast asleep snoring or woke up looking different from the person you love.

It even went as deep as not knowing how they manage their anger, social etiquette and how fun they would be when you are both alone or stranded on lockdown in a worst-case scenario of Covid-19. What exactly did you fell in love with?

Love is never enough at first sight, at least not for everyone. It would not be until you have spent a large chunk of your life with that pretty looking being you saw, and it felt a lot like love, well it could be lust over the shape of her body and not the person she is. Lust over her sexuality and not her ability as human, lust over her look and not her charisma or value. Would you compromise your personality to be with a pretty looking stranger and accept all his/her inadequacy?

Love is never enough even after years of courtship and marriage. As we spent time together, we discover our shortcomings and have to decide if we want to live with them or not. In most cases, we rarely want to help each other get better, and we rarely want to accept to get better because it is difficult for us as people to embrace change.

Politics / Varsity Don Calls For UN Charter To Tackle Fake News by crownbryan(m): 6:56am On Oct 27, 2020
“Events happen quite fast and news editors publish without having enough time to think them through. Speed is now priority and accuracy and impact are somewhat an afterthought. This is a challenge in journalism today just as much as it is in political communication too."

A university don, Dr. Kola Adeshina has called on the United Nations to draft a charter that would address the anti-social potential of social media across the world while protecting individual’s rights to freedom of expression.

He made this call during a virtual webinar organised by an alumni group of the Department of Mass Communication, Crescent University, Abeokuta- Ogun State last weekend titled, EndSARS Protest: What worked, went wrong and way forward.

Adeshina said the violence that trailed the EndSars Protest across Nigeria was largely fueled by fake news, one of the potential dangers of social media.

“Social media is too powerful and far-reaching for it not to be regulated. What we have seen in the past 72 hours is a clear manifestation of the anti-social potential that social media possess. There are many applications that can be used to fake realities and simulate real life situations. Often times, these apps are used to confuse social media consumers and trigger events, the likes of what we have seen across the country.”

“Fake news is not just a Nigerian problem, it is global. The world has to address it now before it plunges it into a third world war. Some scholars are already advocating for a UN Charter in this regard and I strongly believe this should be done. Countries like the UK, Germany and some other advanced economies have different forms of regulation on social media. They work with the tech companies to reduce the risk of spreading fake news, cyber bullying and others. We need to have some form of control here and now is the best time to do something. This has nothing to do with press freedom or freedom of expression” He added.

Dr. Adeshina, a scholar of Development Communications and Head, Department of Mass Communication, Crescent University, Abeokuta, Ogun State also blamed traditional media for their role in the coverage of the EndSARS protest across the country.

Business / The Challenges Of Working From Home by crownbryan(m): 11:34am On Apr 17, 2020
Working from home might seem like a dream solution to the problems caused by the current lockdown. However, for all the benefits that come with it, there are a ton of problems that come with working from home. From challenges due to motivation to technical hitches, different issues might hinder productivity while attempting to run your business remotely.

This article will discuss some of these problems that are most likely going to be encountered and how they can be solved or their effect reduced at the very least. This list of challenges has been culled from previous experiences of business owners who have come across these challenges and have successfully navigated their way across them. Let's get right into it, shall we?

Finding the Right Balance of Work Intensity
It is generally believed that when one is not under supervision, they tend to slack off. However, the reverse could also be the case in some instances. How so?

When a person feels comfortable with her/his work and workspace, they tend to keep at a task for long stretches at a time. Often, such ones spend hours in front of their screen without having a sense of time. While this might seem like an ideal situation especially if there is a lot of work to be covered (which there almost always is, sadly), it could end up being counterproductive in the long run. Overworking will lead to quicker burnout, and may reduce the accuracy of work done. Hence, the need for the right balance to be found.
Make sure to give yourself compulsory breaks at intervals. This will keep you refreshed to tackle whatever tasks are in front of you. Try to rest your eyes as well. It is a scientific fact that excess screen time damages the eyes so be wary of that. While you try not to overwork, make sure you do not waste time on mundane activities.

Distractions
This might be the biggest challenge faced by all who attempt the remote working system. Distractions might come from individuals (family members, friends, or other visitors), chores, entertainment (movies, video games, recreational activities, etc.) among others. It might not be possible to eliminate these distractions, but they can be reduced to a bare minimum.
One of the first things to do before you begin to work from home is to inform the people around you. You might find it helpful to inform possible visitors that you would be unavailable to entertain them within a given timeframe. Once the people around you are aware that you are not taking a holiday rather working, they would be less likely to pose distractions to you. You can also use noise-cancelling headphones to block out distractions from others.

It is advisable to use a different PC for work and play. If this is not possible, create multiple user accounts on your PC. You can remove any possibly distracting files from your work account, including movies, video games, and others. It reduces the temptation to "quickly peep that movie" and helps you focus. You won't get much work done otherwise.

Communication Breakdown
When members of a team do not see regularly, it is easy for a member to be left out of the communication loop. This will affect getting a job done within a set deadline. Thus, EVERY member of a team should be made aware of the progress report of a given task while receiving feedback on each activity carried out.

Keeping in touch remotely has gotten very easy these days. There are a plethora of platforms where virtual meetings can be held. Make sure everyone is on the same page at any given point in time. This helps to make sure all the efforts are coordinated to achieve a given task in the most effective way possible. Note that individual communication might work better in some cases than a general meeting.
Scheduling Working Hours

The best part of working from home is that you are afforded the freedom to set your working time. This freedom, however, does not always work out for the best if extreme care is not taken. There are a couple of factors that should be taken into account before your working schedule is set:
Consider your productive hours. What time do you do your best job? How long can you stay productive?
Consider your team members. Do you have to be in constant communication with them while you try to get some work done? If so, when are they likely to be available and be at their creative best?

Your clients should be considered the most. At what time of the day are your services most required by the client? Can I make arrangements for them before when they might need said product/service, or do I need to offer it on request?

Try as much as possible to have well-defined periods that count as your working hours. It helps keep you organised. Do not forget to also add time in-between for rest.

One good way to keep to the time set is by dressing up for work. It creates a degree of seriousness and reminds you that you're not on a holiday. Also, create a workstation and be there for the allotted period required.

Motivation and Performance Metrics
While it may not be an accurate measure of productivity, there is an eye test used to measure how much each member of a team puts forth to the collective. Things like coming to work early and leaving late, dressing up for the job, charisma and social skills, which might not be important to the job per se, might have helped some not so productive members of a team skate by. Working remotely, these definitely cannot be used to measure their importance.
Analyse key performance indicators (KPI) for each individual/department. For instance, a social media team might be appraised on the number of engagements for a given period. Identify these KPIs for each department and be eager to evaluate how much has been done by each individual.
Motivation is also important to productivity. So do not be afraid to offer incentives for the completion of tasks. Set realistic targets for yourself and others.

Technology Issues
Issues could arise due to intermittent electricity supply, data or airtime shortage, or faults with your computer system. You must make plans ahead of time to cope with these issues before they arise, or else they would negatively affect your business.

Get a backup power source. This could be in the form of generators, inverters, power banks, etc. Make sure that your phone has surplus airtime at any given time. Depending on your data consumption rate, you might be better served by getting a Wi-Fi device loaded with a reasonable amount of data. Having a backup PC will also mean that damage to the main PC will not put a halt to your work.

Challenging, Not Impossible
Despite the challenges that come with it, working remotely can be extremely rewarding. Countless examples have shown it, and countless more will go on to cement this truth further. Proper planning is what it takes. So stay home, stay safe, and run your business!

Business / Creating Virtual Opportunities In Business During Lockdown by crownbryan(m): 4:30pm On Apr 09, 2020
Quite a number of places have had some degree of lockdown imposed on them in the light of the Covid-19 pandemic. This has sorely affected most businesses, big or small. In a previous article, we visited the possibilities of making social media a veritable tool for your business marketing and visibility. This article will discuss important steps to digitise your business.

Working from home has gained popularity over time, however, it has been a slow process. Running a virtual business has numerous benefits, not least of which is that it costs arguably less to run. Despite reservations about the idea from many, it has become a necessity for businesses to explore this mode of running a business as the restrictions to movement lingers. The following are some steps that can be followed in creating a virtual workspace.

Create Online Awareness

This is a very obvious step, so it goes right on top. For the same reason you would expect your physical business to be known around its physical location (unless you run a shady business of course ), your virtual business can do with online publicity. Social media remains a primary tool for this. This space gives you visibility and engagements, as has been discussed earlier.
Social media does not do it all, though. Your business needs its own private space, a space where all your offerings and information can be seen. You need an up-to-date website that is easy to navigate. Websites do not personalise your business, however. For this reason, it is encouraged to run a blog also. Blogs provide a personal feeling about your business. People are more likely to patronise you if they feel there is a person behind it and not just a “mindless bot”.

Create a Business Plan

You need to identify what your business offers in terms of goods and services – what your business CAN offer. You need also to have a clear vision and set boundaries, create an effective working process, and have realistic targets. This helps you and members of your team to be able to be effective and have the best possible ROI in the shortest possible time.
Let all employees understand how working remotely differs from working in an office environment. Be selective when picking members of your team; not all are well suited for remote assignments and not all tasks can be handled by all members of your team.
Keep the Communication Line Open
This works for both customers and employees. There should be an open channel of communication across the designated hierarchy of your organisation. All members of your team should be comfortable coming up with ideas and putting them to those higher up the ladder. This gives them a feeling of belonging and drastically improves their input as they feel like a part of the system and not a misfit.
Regular meetings should also be set up. This will help to keep tabs on the progress of the team, communicate new plans to all, and maintain a personal relationship. Virtual meetings can be held using various platforms. Popular ones include Zoom, Skype for Business, Slack, Zoho Meeting, and WhatsApp.

Measure Productivity

Your business must first and foremost be productive. So you must have set down metrics to analyse the productivity of your business. Try not to only focus on the final outcome of a particular process. Evaluate various stages of the process. Use quantifiable data to measure how well you are doing. Analyse key performance indicators (KPIs) diligently and be willing to make changes to certain areas that seem to be lagging.
For every observation, you need to be willing to train members of your team to make them improve in that area. Do not stop at measuring the team as a whole, observe individual members of the team and help any such who might be behind to keep up. Make sure to have a rewards system as well as extra motivation.

Be Realistic

It will not be easy getting used to the remote working system for sure. There might be some losses along the way, maybe more. But with proper planning and determination, a virtual workspace will yield dividends. Overall, it’ll pay off!

Business / Stay At Home - Let Your Business Do The Talking by crownbryan(m): 6:57pm On Apr 02, 2020
Feeling laid back or tired as your business spirals out of control with the novel Coronavirus which has incapacitated a lot of businesses worldwide? Staying at home shouldn't ruin your business, with the right hands and right platforms, your business can still thrive and even rack up a lot of profits along the way.

So, what does your business need to weather this storm?

Interpersonal communication would forever remain a veritable tool for effective communication in marketing and business enterprises because of the human factor which comes with understanding your target audience, customers and client. However, this is impossible as a result of social distancing rule which helps to prevent the virus from spreading; the silver lining is Social Media engagement and online presence.
Social media presence and Online engagement are a like for like replacement that when exploited and used effectively, your business would remain on track by keeping up with your clients as well as updating them about tips and hints that could make your services indispensable to them, even in this pandemic.

Effective Social media online presence isn't about pushing your businesses or services or offers right in the faces of your client or target customers, it's about constantly keeping up with your target market, monitoring online trends and patterns that might help your redesign and know when exactly to offer y our services.

Social Media Online Tips

Create a list of topics that best describes your services and creatively weave your social media posts around them.

Let your customers know your products are also accessible digitally by offering "online deals"

Online deals: This is a very important promotion strategy that might help push your products and services out there for people to see quickly, you might adopt the age-old techniques of "buy 4 get 1 free" this might sound funny, but this is a strategy which makes customers powerful and feel that they are at advantage, such promotion can run for a short period of time while you monitor the trend.

Your product might not all be digitally available for all customers to access because of the corona stay at home policy, but a date could be set for the immediate delivery after the self-isolation period, while you deliver digital receipts to your customers directly.
Unveiling new exciting Products and Services using "pre-order"

"Pre-order" Yes! Pre-order, it's very common, but it's a technique that would sell your products and services fast if used alongside creative copywriting and social media promotion. This might be a good time to redesign some of your digital products, with stock prices crashing and the world economy taking a downward slide, people are more likely to want to cash in by buying products for slightly less the price.

This is not a bad thing, considering you are yet to release the product to the market, you are only advertising for potential buyers who would love to buy at a lesser price before the final unveiling and distribution for buying at the market. Even if it isn't a digital product, you can encourage your customers to buy during the pre-order for a slightly lesser price, so they can redeem the order and have it delivered after the self-quarantined period is over.

Social media is a good place to start, as you can offer the option to chat via Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and other instant messaging platforms. You can also offer video conferencing options through Skype or FaceTime, so your customers can get that "face-to-face" feel without actually being there in-person.

Education / Authorities Of Crescent University, Abeokuta Reacts To Report On Convo Violence by crownbryan(m): 3:08pm On Oct 20, 2019
Authorities of Crescent University, Abeokuta have reacted to online reports headlined "Crescent University convocation turns violent as angry parents beat journalist, curses management", stressing that the reports were at best biased, subjective and unbalanced.

A release by the public relations office stated that both the alleged parents and the Ogun State Broadcasting Corporation (OGBC) reporter Jumoke Onafowora arrived the Bola Ajibola Auditorium venue of the convocation about two hours behind deadline set for graduands and guests to have seated.

The release noted that " all over the world, universities have rules and regulations guiding their ceremonies especially on punctuality, timeliness and conduct. Crescent University is not an exception in this academic culture. All students, parents and their guests had earlier been notified that they must be seated by 9.30 a.m. before the procession of the university chancellor at 10 a.m.

" We are appalled that the journalist in question, had, according to the report, struggled with 'the parents' to gain access into the convocation hall around midday, more than two hours after the deadline, whereas an alternative comfortable 500 seater Marquee under which there were large screen TV monitors projecting the programme had been adequately provided for those who arrived late", the release stated.

The release posits that "since our vision was not only academic but with moral rectitude, no guest, including the journalist in question could have been allowed by the security staff after procession of the chancellor and even representative of the governor had been seated and the programme was already halfway"

The university also lamented as unethical, sensational and judgemental the rush to the press by the said journalist without contacting any official of the institution for balance and fairness of the story.

"Preliminary investigations have revealed that no bona-fide parent was involved and that the people with which the aforementioned journalist had a brawl were most likely to be gate-crashers, touts and miscreants disguised as parents since important ceremonies are usually besieged by such people to beg for money and curry favour with dignitaries", the release concluded. It further stated that the University has a virile Parents Forum with established two-way communication channel though complaints and concerns are addressed.

The university therefore enjoined journalists and other Nigerians to embrace the culture of punctuality and orderliness in all they do.
