FamilyBecoming A Better Parent by crownbryan(op): 5:18pm On Jan 26, 2017
Most children have that one habit that triggers the not so good part of their parents. It could be grumbling, unnecessary crying, whining, murmuring, nagging, refusing to clean up or do chores, taking school work with levity, or throwing tantrums. Indeed, being a parent can be quite tasking. Given that AllAboutSchoolsNg is devoting January to helping you become better, we have have compiled a few steps be a better parent.

Trust your Guts: As a caregiver, you have to learn to follow your instincts. Especially for young parents, when the baby arrives, you suddenly get filled with doubts like if indeed you would be able to take care of this child and train him/her right. This is when you have to learn to believe in yourself. There is no instructional manual to being a parent so you have to trust your guts and with time you’d see everything would begin to take shape.

Avoid Re-enacting Your Parents Ways: Don’t say “because my parents trained me this way and I turned out this good, that is how I will raise my children”. Granted, some principles remain the same (e.g. discipline) but their applications (e.g. spanking) have changed. It is the 21st century, you know. We can no more say because our parents hit us so that’s how it should be with our kids. There are different ways that are more effective than spanking. I overheard a child one time threatening to report his mom to the authorities for child abuse if she ever did hit him again. You can imagine! I know most of us would say now “Ah! If it were then, who are you to talk in such manner to your mom? You were bound to receive the beating of your life”. Well children now like I said are more exposed, they know they have certain rights and they wouldn’t want you to trample on them.

Restrain from Comparison: How did you feel then when your parents would say to you “Look at Mr. Gbade's son, he came first in your class and he won a scholarship. He doesn’t have two heads.” Yes, you felt despondent right? That’s how your kids feel when you compare them to other kids. Mind you, comparison dampens your child’s self-esteem.

Let Them Explore: Don’t clip their wings; rather give them a nudge to the path they desire to follow. Because you don’t fancy the acting profession, doesn’t mean your child can’t become an actor. Be honest with them about diverse career prospects, show them real life examples and teach them the importance of consequences of decisions. Guide them, but ultimately, let them decide.
Be More Than Just a Parent: You have to learn to play the role of everybody in the life of your child. Learn to be a friend, a confidant, coach, counselor, doctor, role model, driver, handyman, super hero and lots more.
Don’t Try to Fix Everything: Especially for parents with teenagers, don’t try to fix their problems unless they ask for your help. That you were vigilant enough to detect their challenges does not mean you can fix it. Sometimes, you need to let them resolve it and learn resilience; sometimes you refer them to professionals. We have to let them feel grown-up and experience that sense of maturity. This way, we even get to help them build their self-reliance.

Show Them How Much You Care: Build special memories with your kids, have special time with them . Let them know how much they mean to you. You should not be too busy for your kids, do something fun with them. Trust me they wouldn’t forget those memories you’ve created. I remember during the holidays, AllAboutSchoolsNG encouraged parents to maximize the holiday and shared with us various fun activities we could carry out with our kids like; Play board games, Cook a special meal, Visit an old place and lots more.
Lastly, tell them you love them: Trust me they always want to hear that sentence. It gives them a sense of belonging and how much wanted they are. My parents never forget to say that to me and with that nobody or feeling on planet earth can ever make me feel unloved. I’d always do that with my kids, you should too.

CareerThe Secret Code To A Successful 2017- Balance Your BSS by crownbryan(op): 11:03am On Jan 10, 2017
In the land of humans, there is a secret code to a fantastic life . This code helps everyone who discovers it to become better than they ever thought possible. Unfortunately, the code is not known by many because as we said, well, it is a secret. It is not to be found somewhere in the North Pole; it is not a code you travel out of the country to get- as neither US, UK or Dubai is a cartel over it. In fact, you can’t hear it in stories neither can old age buy it for you. They don’t teach it in worship centres neither is it up for sale at the market. It is not on television, radio or any of those fancy media things; you can’t read it from your palms, neither can you decode it from the stars and (gasp), they don’t teach it in school- no, not even at university level!

Where can this code then be found? (Whispers) Right here AllAboutSchoolsNG. On this very page? Yes! We put it here just for you because we know that every now and then, we all like to hear a juicy bit of secret. Now, AllAboutSchoolsNG will never encourage you to be nosey about others but we will tell you the amazing secret to becoming a fantastic you: balance your BSS account! That is the secret. What does ‘BMS’ mean? That would be your body, soul and spirit. To reveal the better version of you that you never knew existed; you have to balance all three. If one lags behind, it tells on all the others. To live a full life, you have to balance this ultimate account . Here are tips to help you do just that.

BALANCE YOUR ‘B’

Your ‘B’ is your body. Your body is the physical part of you that everyone sees before they even know anything about your intellect or philosophy. You need to take care of it. For more tips on how to take care of your body, check out this and this.
Here are bite sized tips to help you balance your body:

Sleep no less than seven hours a night. Too few of us get proper sleep, never making up the sleep deficit we accumulate. This makes us dull and easily swayed by daily stress. Get up at dawn and sleep before midnight. Many people suffer from depression today because they don’t get enough sleep. When you are well rested, you are a more pleasant person. Isn’t that a version of you that you would like to see?
Eat Healthy Meals. Being fat makes us sluggish and slow. Plus, it incurs a litany of health problems. Buy fresh healthy foods. The tip is ‘eat food that come from a plant (tree), not from a (manufacturing) plant. Cut out the sugar and artificial ingredients, especially sweetener and keep the carbohydrates down. The closer a food is to its natural state; the better it is for you. Drink lots of clean water too.
Get out of the chair and exercise. Walking is one of the best ways to stay fit—do it. And with someone else!
BALANCE YOUR ‘M’

Your ‘M’ is your mind. Your mind is not your brain. Your mind is the element of a person that enables them to be aware of the world and their experiences, to think, and to feel; the faculty of consciousness and thought. To put your mind in good shape, do these :

Read a book! It is said every time that Nigerians don’t read books, especially after they graduate save- for a few training courses. That is horrible! How will the better version of you come out if it runs on stale knowledge? You see, by simply reading this, you have learnt a timeless secret. Imagine all you could learn if you were an avid reader.
Learn the basics of logic. People wouldn’t be so gullible to political and pseudo religious antics if only they would reason.
Find out more about an opposing viewpoint. You have a strong opinion about a matter? Great! Why not take a little while to consider opposing views. If for nothing, you will be able to make your point rationally and objectively. Narrow-mindedness hides the better version of you.
Keep learning new things even if they seem difficult. Can’t swim? Why not? Pick three things you wished you could do and start learning how to do them. Google is your friend.
Teach Someone Something: We learn better when we teach others. As you open your mind to new things, impart your knowledge on others around you- beginning from your home. Who knows how that wisdom may help another! Share what you you’ve learnt from this piece.
BALANCE YOUR ‘S’

Your ‘S’ is your spirit and while we may not be able to tell you what it is, you know when you have it and when you don’t. When a spirit leaves a body, we call such bodies dead so you definitely need to develop your spirit. Here is how:

Learn empathy. We must make our lives available to others and share in their ups and downs. Celebrate with those who do and share the pain of those who are in distress.
Listen to good music. Throw out the lewd thrash they play on radio these days. You are better with fun music and positive lyrics.

Write letters: Write them to friends; write them to strangers, but write! Your letter may be the only one someone gets in a month. Yes, use the Nigerian post office. They still work.

Cultivate beauty. If you can, grow a garden, draw, paint or take pictures.

Pray. Pray for yourself, family, friends (or acquaintances) and country.

Cultivate positive relationships. We cannot say it enough; spend quality time with your family. To children, love is spelt time . Check here, here and here for fun activities with your children. Also, sever ties with negative people. A cloud of negative people around you will continue to cover up that fantastic version of you the world needs to see.

Moderate Media: Turn the TV off, put down the newspaper, and log off the Internet. If materialism and consumerism keeps you from developing your spirit, eliminate those too.

Slowly start incorporating these ideas into your daily routine and see how they positively bring out the fantastic version of you you’ve been longing to see.

Here is to a fabulous you in the new year. Cheers.
