Do parents still collect dowries from men? I thought its collected just for formality sake but they return it back immediately and tell the man that they are not selling off their daughter.

But Igbo weddings are off the hook. Some men save for years to be able to go with the demands. You pretty much feed & cloth the bride's ancestors, priest, dibia, father, mother & community if the need arises. Sometimes the bride's mom would be in women group or association in their church, you have to cater for those ones too. Then the bride's village too are family for that period of celebration.
