Following the controversy that trailed the clemency granted to Yewande Oyediran, a lawyer sentenced to seven years in prison for killing her husband, Lowo, a former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Oyo state, Mr Seun Abimbola, has revealed why the released murder convict's name was added to the list of those granted amnesty by Governor Abiola Ajimobi. Recall we reported earlier that Yewande was convicted in November 2017, after being found guilty of killing her husband with a knife following a disagreement on February 2, 2016, at their residence in Akobo area of Ibadan. Igbere TV reports that She had only served 2 years out of her 7 year prison sentence before being granted clemency by Governor Ajimobi, allegedly facilitated by her 'well connected family'. Commenting on the amnesty granted to Yewande, the former AG noted that the former Oyo State Governor had the constitutional right to grant amnesty to any convict. Debunking claims of her family's influence inspiring the clemency, Seun disclosed that the lawyer was among the 50 people pardoned by the state on recommendation of a committee set up to look into the petitions of 400 persons, who had pleaded for clemency. The committee reportedly comprised of commissioners, officials of the Department of State Services and other government agencies. “The issue of clemency by any government is a constitutional matter and the exercise of that power is not arbitrary. It is based on the recommendation of the committee on the prerogative of mercy. “The committee is chaired by the attorney-general and also has DSS officers, the police, the chaplain and the chief imam of the Government House, Legal Aid Council; Director, Legal Affairs; the Solicitor-General and the Director of Public Prosecutions as members. So, it was not an arbitrary decision. “The lady in question is just one out of 50 who were pardoned. And the 50 who were pardoned were drawn out of 400 who were considered. So, she was not singled out as some are insinuating. Even the prisons authorities brought recommendations on the good behaviour of those pardoned". Seun also dispelled claims of Yewande serving only 2 years out of her 7 year jail sentence. According to him, she had already served nine months in prison which was equal to a year. The former AG maintained that the freed convict had already served half of her sentence, as her prison time was counted from the day she was detained. “She was arrested in 2016 and her sentence started reading from the day she was arrested. A year in prison is nine months. She was not convicted of murder but of manslaughter. It was a fight between a husband and a wife, which resulted in death. “People should stop saying she killed her husband as if it was premeditated. The amnesty was not a secret one. We did it every May 29 and even the new governor pardoned convicts on June 12" he added. The Ogun Command of the FRSC on Saturday said that one person died and another injured in an accident that involved two vehicles and a motorcycle at Jujo Area, along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in Ogun. The Ogun Sector Commandant of the FRSC , Mr Clement Oladele, told newsmen in Ota, that the accident happened at about 12.45 p.m. Oladele said that a Mack truck with registration number: SMK 311 XE, loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) that was heading toward Lagos lost control due to a brake failure, Igbere TV reports. According to him, the truck rammed into a Highlander Jeep with registration mark: KRD 18 EZ and a motorcycle. The sector commandant said that nine persons were involved in the accident in which one person died, another one sustained serious injury while others had minor injuries. Oladele said, “The corpse of the victim which happened to be the passenger on the motorcycle was still trapped under the tanker as at the time of filing this report. ” The passenger that sustained serious injury had been taken to General Hospital, Sango-Ota, Ogun for treatment.” The commandant said that his men were having challenges with retrieving the corpse from underneath the tanker due to the possibility of a fire outbreak. He said that the men from the fire service had been contacted to be on standby saying that transloading of the PMS would start as soon as they arrived. He said that the firemen would also be able to avert any fire outbreak. Oladele said that was the standard practice to follow when an incident like that had occurred. Oladele said that his men were making efforts to remove the vehicle off the road to ease free flow of traffic in the area. The commandant advised motorists to always be patient and to cooperate with the FRSC personnel and those of the traffic and emergency agencies managing the traffic situation. He also advised them use the alternative corridor of Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Medbury Medical Services has suspended its driver for using its ambulance to convey 10 cartons of stolen Tramadol, Igbere TV reports. The company, in a statement on Thursday, said that the driver hijacked the ambulance without permission. Officials of the Nigeria Customs Service, Apapa Area Command, had on Wednesday announced the arrest of two suspects caught with 10 cartons of stolen tramadol conveyed in an ambulance at Apapa ports. Medbury, a health provider responsible for emergency medical services to Apapa Warf, had at all times stationed its ambulances within the terminal. The company had earlier discovered that the whereabouts of the driver and ambulance were unknown and missing before the news broke. The company said it had launched investigation into how the vehicle was used for the illegal activity. “The initial assumption was that the driver had stolen the ambulance, but we were later informed that the driver had been intercepted by Customs officers at the Port and Tramadol was discovered in the vehicle. “We will like to clarify that the driver was at the time of the incident not authorised to move the vehicle out of the premises and acted on his own accord,” the statement said. “We immediately provided a replacement, a fully equipped ambulance, as soon as we were notified of the incident and the driver involved has been suspended indefinitely, pending the report of the investigation.” The company commended moves by customs officials to further investigate the matter. “While the terminal interfaces with Nigerian Customs and the issue of investigation is ongoing, we are on standby to offer assistance within our capacity and knowledge on the issue as well as receive any useful information from the terminal on its perspective on the issue,” the company said. A Nigerian professor, Augustine Nwagbara, dismissed by the University of Education (UEW), Ghana, has met the chairman/chief executive officer of Nigeria Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Igbere TV reports. The professor paid her a courtesy visit in Abuja on Thursday. The university on June 19 dismissed Nwagbara over “unethical and damning” comments he made about the country and its education system. Prof. Nwagbara had appeared in a viral video urging a group of people to employ the media from Nigeria to reshape the reportage of Nigerians based in Ghana. At the meeting with Mrs Dabiri-Erewa, he said his dismissal from the university was unethical and should be reversed in the interest of the institution. He queried the process the university adopted in addressing the matter. “If a panel is set up to probe a professor, it should be made up of people not below the position of a professor and if found guilty he goes to a second panel and then to the University council. “The fastest the process can be is two months but this happened in less than 15 minutes,” he said. Nwagbara said he got some computer experts from University of Lagos who tracked the viral video and discovered it was a Ghanian journalist, who had been consistently promoting Xenophobia that posted the video. “The journalist excluded context from the video because the video was actually supposed to show a meeting with people making contributions but instead the video was doctored and stitched,” he said. Dabiri-Erewa welcomed him back to Nigeria and invited him to use some space at the commission to share his intellectual wealth of knowledge and experience. “We will engage the authorities and we will work together for the development of Africa,” she said. The deceased, Elizabeth Ndubuisi, died on June 13 at Kempton Park, Gauteng Province. Ndubuisi was said to be the Deputy Director-General of Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN). She was in South Africa to attend the conference of the African Insurance Organisation (AIO). The Anioma Cultural Group in Delta State has petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari over the continued attacks on innocent residents by suspected Fulani herdsmen, Igbere TV reports. The group in the petition signed by Prof. Epiphany Azinge and made available to Igbere TV on Thursday said the activities of the herdsmen in various communities in the state over the years have been life- threatening. The group alleged that several persons have been killed while housewives have been raped in their farmlands in the period under review. “Our people can no longer go to their farms for fear of the unknown and of not being kidnapped. “This has led to serious famine in the land, especially as in just one night these herdsmen ravaged a full year’s toll, raped our women and killed some people in their farms. “Our people are scared and need the assurances that they can continue to earn a living without fear in their farms and in their houses,” the petition read. The group explained that the relationship between farmers and herders’ can be likened to that of the tongue and the teeth, stressing that both need each other to survive. “We are appealing to Mr. President to come to our aid and ensure we have our people living without fear, especially going to their farms to harvest food crops,” Prof. Azinge said. Lara Owoeye-Wise, electronic and social media adviser to Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, has responded to criticism over her appointment, Igbere TV reports. Mrs Owoeye-Wise, in a lengthy note on Facebook on Tuesday, knocked down the attacks, calling it “a coordinated social media attack on my person and character”. Her critics alleged that she had deleted over 11,000 posts on Facebook which were allegedly anti-government. Owoeye-Wise, who in a similar role served under the immediate past Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Lasun Yusuff, wondered how she could have found time to delete that number of posts. “It is therefore unimaginable if not laughable, that i would in panicky and dishonest move, ‘delete my posts, numbering up to 11,000’! One, if I had up to 11,000 posts, that must mean I had spent the past years doing nothing but indulging in endless postings. “How would i have had such luxury of time within the pressure we work under daily, managing my Principal on one hand, fulfilling my role as a family woman on the other, and giving myself to other upbuilding social services to better my environment and world?” she asked. Owoeye-Wise also wondered how her critics got ‘mugshots’ of the same posts which were said to have been deleted. She also countered allegations that she had a working relationship with Senator Dino Melaye, a member of the opposition, who represents her senatorial district, Kogi West. “Should I have worked for Senator Melaye in his political ambitions or even his party, I would have demonstrated some measure of honour to own up to it and actually turn down this appointment as I do not possess what it takes to be treacherous,” she said. On Friday, June 14, the Governorship Elections Tribunal sitting in Uyo, frowned at the application filed by Nsima Ekere, the Governorship candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) seeking for more time to respond to applications made by respondents in the governorship elections petition pre-trials hearings, Igbere TV reports. The court in its statement also emphasized that time is essential in an election petition case and therefore charged all parties to strive to abide by the timelines as indicated by the Electoral Act or as directed by the Tribunal. Igbere TV learnt that the case has been adjourned to June 14, 2019 to hear all applications in the suit and the completion of pre-trial. But counsel to the Petitioner, Jibrin Okutepa, SAN at the session at the Magistrate Court Complex in Uyo, prayed the court for an extension of the pre-trial period to enable them prepare their responses to the applications as filed by the Respondents. The counsel to the Respondents, Chief Assam Assam, SAN for the 1st Respondent, Uko Udom, SAN for the 2nd Respondent and Offiong Offiong, SAN for the 3rd Responent were unanimous in their position that they would not oppose the application of the Petitioner, except that he cannot predicate his prayers on unsubstantiated allegations against Respondents. The counsel to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd had all filed their applications for hearing today but the Petitioner failed to respond to most of the Applications, hence the application for the extension of time. The court yielded to the prayers of the Petitioner and extended the pre-trial period to June 21, 2019 for completion of pre-trial hearings. The controversies surrounding the choice of Hon Femi Gbajabiamila as Speaker of the 9th House of Representatives, seems unending, even as the June 11 inauguration is just a few days away. Igbere TV reports that Gbajabiamila, Majority Leader of the outgoing 8th House, is the anointed candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Speakership position. Protesters Having come from the Southwest geopolitical zone, Gbajabiamila is believed to be favoured by his political godfather, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is also from the West and ranks as a National Leader of the APC. Lately, individual bodies, pressure groups and political parties including the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), had instituted several charges against the lawmaker over alleged $25,000 fraud and other corruption cases. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila Gbajabiamila has been accused of frauds in the United States, particularly in Georgia. The CUPP has also alleged Gbaja to be an ex-convict who ran away to Nigeria after serving his jail term in America. Gbajabiamila, a lawyer by profession, is alleged to have defrauded his client during his stay abroad. Although his accusers had disclosed that the lawmaker had paid back the monies, they are however seeking a court order to compel Gbaja from contesting for the speakership position. Just recently, a case challenging his ambition was struck out from the court, on the grounds that “it lacked merit.” In a clip obtained exclusively by Igbere TV on Friday, some Nigerians in diaspora, stormed the Nigeria Consulate Office in Atlanta Georgia, United States of America. The leader of the group, who narrated the demonstration, said: “This protest is a clear indication that the people are not happy with one of the individuals (Gbaja) being sponsored for the position of the Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives.” The protesters armed with placards with various inscriptions, are demanding that “President Muhammadu Buhari should not play politics with the Speakership position.” They are asking the president to “stay away from National Assembly affairs”, among others. Some of their placards read, “Gbaja is corrupt”, “Buhari stay away from legislative activities”, “Femi is not honourable, he cannot be speaker”, “Gbaja is not a a good choice, we need a competent speaker”, “We don’t want thieves in our government”, “Stop the disgrace.” The protesters alleged that Hon. Gbajabiamila has questionable past from his days as a resident of Georgia. Specifically, the protesters said: “Let us recall that in 2003, a client sought for and engaged the legal services of Femi Gbajabiamila in a case where the client sought to sue (a third party) for damages. Gbaja’s client won the case and a total sum of $25,000 US dollars was paid as cost of injury into the trust account held in the name of Femi Gbajabiamila, on behalf of his client. “Femi stole the $25,000 meant for his client and fled to Nigeria. He was subsequently arraigned for theft and professional misconduct before the Supreme Court of Georgia, where he pleaded guilty, and was accordingly, convicted.” In a separate disciplinary suit filed before the Supreme Court of Georgia with charge no: 806Y0629, obtained exclusively by Igbere TV, “Femi’s disciplinary action was unanimously decided by all Justices of the Supreme Court, on February 26, 2007.” According to the document, the case was, subsequently, reported in 281 Georgia, 659 Georgia, 2007; and 641SE2D532, as published in the United States of America Law Report. But Gbajabiamila has denied the allegation that he was convicted by a court in the United States of America. Similarly, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) told Igbere TV that it was not aware of any case against Gbajabiamila in the US or whether the lawmaker lied in his oath form, as being alleged. Gbajabiamila has threatened to take legal action against the CUPP over the accusations. As the debate over his alleged conviction in the United States continues, all eyes are on the ruling party and Gbaja’s godfather, Bola Tinubu to issue statements. But none of the two parties have either affirmed or defended the anointed speakership candidate. Oldest prisoner in Nigeria, Celestine Egbonuche, has been freed from Enugu Maximum Prison. Pa Celestine, who is said to be over a hundred years old, has been imprisoned for about 19 years, Igbere TV reports. Igbere TV learnt that he was released on Thursday to his only surviving daughter, Chisom Celestine, through a non-governmental organisation, Global Society for Anti-corruption (GSAC). Celestine, a native of Amachara-Owerre, Akokwa in Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State, was condemned to death along with his son, Paul, and another relation, now 87. Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha, last week granted him state pardon following campaigns championed by GSAC. Immediately after his release, Celestine was taken to St. Daniel’s Hospital in Enugu where he was examined to ensure that he was fit before going home. Regional Director, GSAC, Amaka Nweke, said: “Actually on the 5th of September, we petitioned the president of our dear country and past Governor of Imo state, Rochas Okorocha pleading for pardon for Pa Celestine . “His pardon was granted based on his age and his health condition because we found out that his health condition was worsening every day. As a centenarian, he is not supposed to be in prison. When you check other countries you can’t find someone of his age in prison. “On Sunday, I got a call from the former Attorney General of Imo state that he has been granted pardon by the state government.” The centenarian’s daughter also called for the release of her brother, Paul, saying that he was innocent of the crime. A former Washington D.C. police officer, who is of Nigerian descent, has been sentenced to 14 years in federal prison for sex trafficking, Igbere Tv reports. According to multiple reports gathered by Igbere Tv, 29-year-old Chukwuemeka Ekwonna pleaded guilty to paying two teenage girls for sex while he was employed as a police officer in Washington, D.C. U.S. Attorney Robert Hur's office said Ekwonna exchanged more than 250 text messages and social media messages with two girls, ages 14 and 15, and paid both for sex. Ekwonna was charged in April 2017 with soliciting sex from a 15-year-old girl in Glen Burnie and then robbing her at gunpoint. A statement from the U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland stated: "Specifically, between October 2016 and February 2017, Ekwonna, who was an officer with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) in Washington, D.C. at the time, engaged in sexual conduct with two girls, who were 14 and 15 years old, in exchange for money. Both victims were students in the ninth grade at the time of the offenses." It added: "Between December 19, 2016, and April 5, 2017, Ekwonna exchanged approximately 200 messages, both text and through the social media dating platform, with a 14-year-old girl (“Girl 1”)." The Department of Justice release said: "On several occasions, Ekwonna offered to pay Girl 1 to engage in sex acts with him. Ekwonna met with Girl 1 and engaged in sex acts with her on at least five occasions, between October 18, 2016, and February 15, 2017. Ekwonna engaged in illegal sex with the underage girl in different locations in the Annapolis area, including in motel rooms and Ekwonna’s vehicle. Ekwonna typically paid Girl 1 between $30 and $40 to have sex with him. Messages between Ekwonna and the 14-year-old girl suggest that she was aware that Ekwonna was a police officer. It added: "On January 9, 2017, Ekwonna exchanged approximately 54 messages through the dating platform with a second underage girl, who was 15 years old at the time (“Girl 2”). The release also said: "In these messages, Ekwonna offered to pay the 15-year-old girl to engage in sex acts with him. Ekwonna met Girl 2 in Glen Burnie, where he gave her $80 and engaged in sex acts with her in the back of his car. Igbere Tv understands that the Girl 2’s testimony at the sentencing hearing, after they had sex, Ekwonna locked her in the car, pointed a black handgun at her and demanded she return the money he had paid her. As part of his sentence, Ekwonna was ordered to pay $80 in restitution to the victim. His car and his black police-issued handgun were ordered forfeited to the government." A federal judge Tuesday sentenced 29-year-old Chukwuemeka Ekwonna to 14 years in federal prison and also to five years of supervised release after his prison term, Igbere Tv reports. The EFCC, on May 21, 2019 arraigned one Bridget Okafor, a former Assistant Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs on a 13-count charge bordering on abuse of office to the tune of N3,336,176,661.24 (Three Billion, Three Hundred and Thirty-six Million, One Hundred and Seventy-six Thousand, Six Hundred and Sixty-one Naira, Twenty-four Kobo). She was arraigned before Justice Venchak S. Garba of a Federal Capital Territory, FCT High Court, Kwali, Igbere Tv reports. One of the counts reads: “That you, Bridget Chienyezu Okafor, whilst being employed in the public service and serving as Assistant Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service in charge of finance and revenue, sometime in 2015 at Abuja within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, did knowingly acquire a private interest in a contract awarded by Nigeria Customs Service to Erman Global Energy Engineering Nigeria limited, a company in which your children are directors and for which the Nigeria Customs Service paid the sum of eighty-nine million, nine hundred and ninety-nine thousand, nine hundred and sixty-four naira (N89,999,964.00) only and you thereby committed an offence contrary and punishable under section 12 of the Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences act, 2000.” She pleaded “not guilty” to the charges. Counsel for the EFCC, Francis Jirbo, thereafter, asked the court for a date for commencement of trial, in order to enable the prosecution present its witnesses. Arguing the application for bail, Okoi, said: “The defendant has never been arraigned before any court for any alleged offence throughout her 35 years of service and she was also granted bail by the prosecution. She is a mother and a wife, hence she cannot jump bail.” Okoi, thus, prayed the court to grant the defendant bail on liberal terms. Responding, Jirbo, said he had no case to challenge the affidavit, as “she has been on bail by the commission and she always honours the Commission’s invitation.” The trial judge, thereafter, admitted her to bail in the sum of N5 million, with two sureties in like sum, who must be within the jurisdiction of the court, and who must be a civil servant not below the Grade Level 14. She was also ordered to submit her international passport with the Court register. The matter has been adjourned to July 3, 2019 for hearing, Igbere Tv reports.
