PoliticsAisha Buhari Supports Yahaya Bello’s Second Term Bid, Gets Blasted (photos) by CuriousMynd(op): 4:12pm On Nov 15, 2019
First Lady Aisha Buhari has come under attack on social media for supporting the second term bid of Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello.

Mrs Buhari was at the All Progressives Congress rally in Lokoja on Thursday alongside party leaders – national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole; Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State – and others.

She joined in begging Kogi people to forgive Bello for not paying civil servants.

Nigerians on Twitter have accused Aisha of hypocrisy, saying she accused Buhari’s government of being hijacked by a cabal which did not have the people’s best interest at heart, yet she was supporting a governor who is owing salaries.

PoliticsReps Committee Pledges Open Investigation Of NDDC Boss’ Sack by CuriousMynd(op): 5:42am On Nov 14, 2019
The House of Representatives Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has promised to conduct a thorough investigation into the sudden sack of acting Managing Director of NDDC.

The Chairman of the committee Rep. Olubumi Tunji-Ojo (APC-Ondo) made the pledge in an interview with journalists on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said that in line with the mandate given to the committee by the House, the appointment of a three-man NDDC Interim Management Committee would be thoroughly probed.

He said that the investigation would be all encompassing and that the committee was going to be fair to all.

“We are going to look at all the laws, you can be sure that at the end of the day, our recommendations will be based on the rule of law for the benefit of the people.

“We want to have a commission that would provide good roads, a commission that will bring succor to the lives of the people of the Niger Delta and take them to the next level,”he said.

Tunji-Ojo said that the outcome of the investigation would bring an end to the brouhaha surrounding the appointment and the sack.

According to the lawmaker, the House wants to ensure that the laws are followed and that the investigation will reveal that.

He said that if the government had erred, the committee would be courageous enough to report on the floor of the House.

“We owe the Niger Delta people a truthful investigation, we owe them uprightness, we owe them an investigation that will lead to the fulfillment of the mandate of the commission,” he said.

Tunji-Ojo said that he was not impressed by the way the commission was being operated at the moment.

According to him, this is November 2019 and we do not have a budget for 2019, it is an aberration; it shows lawlessness on the part of the organisation.

He said that President Muhammadu Buhari had presented the 2020 budget to the assembly but the NDDC was yet to present the 2019 budget.

The chairman said that he was out to ensure that the commission works for Nigeria, for the oil rich region and for the society at large.

“In four years time, we will leave a commission that the rule of law will reign supreme in all areas of operations.

“When this is done, development will come, transparency will come and accountability will follow.

“But when procurement and finical regulation are not obeyed, you will get what you have now; it is sad, NDDC is not the only intervention commission in the country but it is always in the news for the wrong reasons,” he said.

Earlier, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila mandated NDDC Committee to investigate the issues surrounding the sack of the acting MD.

This followed a motion of Urgent Matter of Public Importance by Rep. Nicholas Ossai (PDP-Delta) at the plenary.

Ossai said that the law establishing the commission provided that its management and administration shall be the responsibility of the its Governing Board.

He said that on Oct. 29, 2019, President Muhammadu Buhari announced the appointment of 15 new NDDC Board Members, whose names were thereafter sent to the Senate for confirmation.

According to him, in the evening that same day, the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Sen. Godswill Akpabio, announced the sacking of the acting Managing Director of NDDC and the appointment of a three-man NDDC Interim Management Committee.

“The speed and curiosity with which the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs hurriedly set up a three-man Interim Management Committee is stunning and suspicious,”he said.

Some people planning to kill my aides, kidnap me, says Ortom

Gov Samuel Ortom of Benue alleged on Sunday in Makurdi that he once heard that some people are planning to kill his security aides, kidnap him and dismember his body parts by parts until he dies.

Ortom who prayed against this also stated that he had dismantled all negative tendencies often believed to deter progress in the Government House and the state.

He said this during a Special Thanksgiving Service organised in his honour by the Independent Print-Media Publishers Association of Nigeria (IPPAN), at the Chapel of Grace, Government House, Makurdi.

“Since my arrival, I have dedicated a special time on daily basis to be with God because He works in miraculous ways; those working against me are wasting their time and will never succeed.

“I have dismantled the devils in Benue Government House; they cannot come near us again. The devil does not have a place in our government house again.

“I am not afraid of any human being. I once heard that some people are planning to kill my security aides, kidnap me and dismember me parts by parts until I die, but I have told them that God will not allow that to happen.

“I have brought myself close to God; there is no turning back. When people plan against me, l will always floor them because God is with me,” he said.

Ortom appealed to Benue people to exercise patience and judge his performance at the end of his second term, pointing out that he had already executed projects and policies that would benefit generations yet unborn.

“We are laying foundations that generations yet unborn will benefit. We appreciate what we have done so far; we are not rushing into making policies, we are taking our time.

“Even now, we have done series of projects, carried out an amnesty programme and implemented the anti-open grazing law. In Benue, herdsmen must obey the law and nobody is above the law,” he said.

Politics12 Shiites Killed By Police Nationwide – IMN by CuriousMynd(op): 4:45pm On Sep 10, 2019
The Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) has said 12 of its members were killed on Tuesday during its nationwide procession to mark Ashura Day.

IMN spokesman, Ibrahim Musa, in a statement on Tuesday, said the killings took place in Kaduna, Bauchi, Sokoto and Katsina States.

Musa, however, said similar processions in Abuja, Jos, Kebbi, Minna, Lafia, Yola, Gusau, Zaria, Kano, Jalingo, Damaturu, Hadejia and Potiskum, ended peacefully.

The statement said: “Today’s show of shame and rage by the police across the states was sequel to the tragic orders given to it by the Inspector general of police, Mohammed Adamu to brutally attack the peaceful Ashura mourners.

“That the mourning procession ended peacefully in places not attacked by the police is sufficient evidence as to who the instigators of violence are whenever we are carrying out our legitimate religious duties.”

The Ashura Day is marked as the tenth day of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic calendar.

It is observed annually by Shiite Muslims worldwide to commemorate the death of Husayn ibn Ali in the Battle of Karbala in Iraq.

Police had warned that only non-members of IMN would be allowed to conduct peaceful procession to mark Ashura Day following the proscription of IMN by a federal court.

Police, however, are yet to make a statement on the killings.

PoliticsStella Oduah Wins At Anambra Tribunal by CuriousMynd(op): 5:24pm On Sep 05, 2019
The National Assembly Election Tribunal sitting in Awka, Anambra State has upheld the election of Stella Oduah as the senator representing Anambra North Senatorial District.

Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Esther Haruna, in her judgement on Thursday, ruled that Mrs Oduah, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was validly elected on February 23.

Candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chinedu Emeka, had petitioned the tribunal, claiming that Oduah was not qualified to contest the election because she did not possess the required academic qualifications.

Emeka, a former deputy governor of Anambra, also alleged that the former minister was a member of APGA at the time of the election.

He added that Oduah’s declaration as the winner of the poll was not in harmony with the provisions of the Electoral Act.

Justice Haruna, however, ruled that the petitioner failed to prove his allegations beyond reasonable doubt, Igbere TV reports.

The tribunal also upheld the election of the PDP member representing Anaocha/Dunokofia/Njikoka Federal Constituency, Val Ayika, whose victory was challenged by APGA’s candidate in the election, Dozie Nwankwo.

CrimeDubai Police Arrest 3 Nigerian Women For Robbing Iraqi Man by CuriousMynd(op): 4:39pm On Aug 28, 2019
Three Nigerian women are facing trial for allegedly luring an Iraqi man to their apartment, assaulting and robbing him of Dh57,000 in Dubai.

The unnamed women aged 30, 33 and 34 were charged with robbery on Monday in a Dubai court.

The 45-year-old victim arrived in Dubai in January and got to know a woman, whom he thought was a Swedish student, through a dating app, Gulf News reports.

They agreed to meet at her apartment in Al Quoz after a phone conversation.

The Iraqi man, however, met the Nigerian women who attacked him.

“The apartment door opened and five African women dragged me inside and physically abused me,” he told the court.

He said that after he was slapped he released the sum of Dh1,600 for his freedom, adding that the women searched his pockets and found Dh55,975.

“They were so happy when they found this amount of cash that they stopped searching me. I was terrified that they would kill me so I pretended to have breathing problems so they would let me go,” he added.

The Iraqi man said he was allowed to leave but that he alerted the building’s security and kept waiting in front of the apartment.

Policemen later arrived and engaged the defendants, who jumped out of the window, on a chase.

Dubai Public Prosecution charged the Iraqi victim with soliciting prostitution. He was fined Dh5,000 and deported.

BusinessCBN Identifies Fraudulent Loan Offer On Social Media by CuriousMynd(op): 2:06pm On Aug 26, 2019
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has warned Nigerians against fraudulent messages on social media requesting loan seekers and owners of small-scale businesses to apply for loans purportedly provided by the Federal Government.

The fraudulent message requests loan seekers to access loans through an e-mail address (empowermentcbnloan@gmail.com) said to be handled by the CBN, Igbere TV reports.

In a statement on Monday by the apex bank’s Director of Corporate Communications, Isaac Okorafor, CBN denied the existence of such loans, adding that it does not interface directly with prospective applicants.

The statement said: “While the CBN, indeed, has several development finance intervention programmes from which different categories of businesses have benefitted (and still benefit), the Bank DOES NOT do so through direct interaction with prospective applicants.

“For the avoidance of doubt, there are clearly spelt out procedures for accessing CBN intervention funds, which are disbursed through Participating Financial Institutions (PFIs), such as Deposit Money Banks (DMBs), Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) and Microfinance Banks (MFBs).

“Members of the public, particularly youth and owners of small-scale businesses, are therefore advised to disregard any message requesting them to send their personal details, including mobile phone numbers, to emails such as empowermentcbnloan@gmail.com or any other one that may be contrived. These messages are fake and anyone who enters into correspondence with them does so at his or her own risk.

PoliticsInvictus Obi: Nigerians Drag Forbes, Atiku, Others For Promoting Fraudster by CuriousMynd(op): 12:20pm On Aug 17, 2019
Nigerians have dragged Forbes and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar over, serial entrepreneur Obinwanne Okeke who was arrested by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) over conspiracy to commit fraud of over $12 million.

Forbes had in 2016 listed the 31-year-old as one of “30 Entrepreneurs Under 30 to Watch”.

In July, 2014, Atiku Abubakar listed Invictus Obi as one of the largest private employer in the country.

The founder of Invictus Group was also named among 100 Most Influential Young Africans 2018.

The FBI has not pressed charges against Okeke, however, news of his arrest filtered in late Friday.

Nigerians on Twitter have taken swipes at Forbes and others, saying the financial magazine should have investigated the source of Okeke’s wealth before listing him as a model for young persons.

Politics“Why I Sponsored Correctional Service Bill” – Senator Andy Uba by CuriousMynd(op): 3:58am On Aug 16, 2019
Former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Interior, Senator Andy Uba says he sponsored the Nigerian Correctional Service Bill, 2019 because of his desire to see a total transformation in the management and administration of prisons in the country.

President Muhammadu Buhari had on Wednesday, assented to the bill changing the name of the Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS) into The Nigerian Correctional Service, Igbere TV reports.

According to a statement from Ita Enang, Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), the “Act repeals the Prisons Acts and changes the name from Nigeria Prisons Service to Nigerian Correctional Service, otherwise known as “the Correctional Service.”

There are, according to the Act, two main faculties of the Correctional Service, namely; Custodial Service and Non-custodial Service.

In an interview with newsmen, the former Anambra South lawmaker noted that by the extant provisions of this new law, both custodial and non-custodial sentencing would be permissible; Prisons will be decongested and it would generally foster a better administration of Criminal Justice in Nigeria. This development also brings Nigerian Prisons Administration System to par with international best practices.

His words: “I am particularly enthused and delighted about President Mohammadu Buhari’s resolve to grant Assent to the Bill because of the quality of time devoted in the harmonization process by Researchers, Committee Staff, and legislators as well.

“As Chairman of the Interior Committee, my team and I visited several prisons in Nigeria and we saw first hand the decay in the system.

“The facilities were congested with most inmates under the awaiting trial list. Basic amenities such as food, electricity, water, beddings, toilet facilities were also in a sorry state due to the poor budgetary allocation that goes to the prisons.

“Touched by these, I decided to sponsor the Correctional Service Bill, 2019 so as to bring the much-needed reforms to the Nigerian Prisons.

“By the extant provisions of this new law, both custodial and non-custodial sentencing would now be permissible, our prisons will be decongested and it would generally foster a better administration of Criminal Justice in Nigeria. This development also brings Nigerian Prisons Administration System to par with international best practices.

“The bill also empowers the State Comptroller of Prisons to reject additional prisoners where the prison in question is already filled to capacity.

“As the new name suggests, more emphasis will now be placed on correcting inmates through various skills acquisition programs such as tailoring, shoemaking, carpentry, computer engineering among others, he said.”
