They released new decoders, but the decoders in itself does not improve picture quality. SLTV itself has improved its picture quality a lot since that post a year ago, so whatever decoder you get, there won't be any difference. In fact, the older decoders can get FTA, but these new ones can't, however, the new ones can scan automatically for new channels, while the old one requires you to manually scan for them. That's the only plus. The dealer is only trying to take more money from you. |

Politics › Tinubu’s Globe-trotting Presidency by Cutezt(op): 4:01pm On Sep 04, 2025 |
Since his inauguration on May 29, 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has spent approximately 210 days, over 45% of his 463 days in office, outside Nigeria. This includes a 10-day annual leave in Europe, starting September 4, 2025. Of these days abroad, an estimated 71 to 73 were dedicated to private trips or vacations, primarily in the UK and France, often described as “working leave” or personal visits, with the latest being the current European leave. While the presidency defends these travels as essential for diplomacy and attracting foreign investment, critics argue that Tinubu’s frequent absences, especially for vacations, reflect a troubling disconnect from Nigeria’s deepening economic and social crises. With inflation soaring past 34%, widespread poverty, and rising insecurity, the question looms: why is Nigeria’s leader so often abroad when the nation needs him most?
Tinubu’s international itinerary is staggering. In 2023, he made 14 to 15 trips, spending approximately 71 days abroad, including summits in France, India, and Saudi Arabia, but also private visits to the UK (approximately 7 days) and France (approximately 3 days). In 2024, the pace intensified with approximately 10 to 12 trips, totaling approximately 85 days, including a 14-day private visit to France in January and extended “working leave” in the UK after official engagements in Saudi Arabia and China (approximately 23 days combined). By August 2025, Tinubu had spent approximately 54 days abroad in 2025, including a 7-day state visit to Saint Lucia (June 28 to July 5, reported as a state visit but with private elements), 5 to 7 days for private extensions in Japan and the UAE, and now the 10-day European leave starting today, September 4, 2025. Cumulatively, these 210 days abroad account for nearly half his presidency, with private trips alone (approximately 78 to 80 days) comprising over 37% of his time overseas and 17% of his total time in office.
Nigeria’s state is dire. Inflation has climbed to 34% or more, driven by the removal of fuel subsidies, a policy Tinubu championed, leaving millions struggling with skyrocketing costs for food, transport, and essentials. Over 133 million Nigerians live in multidimensional poverty, according to the National Bureau of Statistics, while insecurity persists with banditry, kidnappings, and Boko Haram attacks claiming lives daily. The naira’s value has plummeted, and unemployment hovers around 33%. Yet, Tinubu’s frequent absences, particularly for private vacations, including the 7-day Saint Lucia trip with private elements and the current 10-day European leave, have sparked accusations of insensitivity.
Critics, including opposition figure Peter Obi, argue that Tinubu’s trips, especially private ones to London, Paris, Saint Lucia, and now Europe, send a message of detachment. “When your house is on fire, you don’t go on holiday,” Obi remarked in a 2024 statement, echoing sentiments on X, where users have labeled Tinubu “the tourist president.” The optics are particularly stark with his latest European vacation, announced today, and the Saint Lucia visit, which combined official engagements with reported personal time in a drug-transit hub. These absences contrast sharply with his administration’s calls for citizens to endure economic “sacrifices.” The Brazil, Colombia, and Saint Lucia deals, while promising FDI, amplify concerns: As South American and Caribbean drug routes target Africa, direct flights and lax oversight could boost smuggling risks, potentially linking back to Tinubu’s unresolved Chicago drug ties, where he forfeited funds tied to a heroin network.
The presidency defends Tinubu’s travels as critical for Nigeria’s global standing and economic recovery. Official trips have yielded Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) worth billions, such as a $600 million digital economy deal with France, energy partnerships with Qatar, and agricultural agreements with Brazil and Colombia in 2025. The Saint Lucia visit secured tourism and trade commitments, positioning Nigeria as a partner in Caribbean markets. The administration’s “4D” foreign policy (Democracy, Development, Diaspora, Demography) frames these engagements as vital for attracting FDI and addressing domestic issues like energy and security. A presidency spokesperson, in a 2024 Naija News interview, insisted that Tinubu’s trips are “not vacations but strategic missions,” even for private-labeled visits, which are often described as “working leave” for strategic planning. The Saint Lucia trip was framed as a state visit, and the current 10-day European leave, though explicitly a vacation, is justified as a needed break for a leader under pressure.
The financial burden of Tinubu’s travels is another sore point. The N6.9 billion budgeted for 2024 foreign trips, covering the president and his entourage, has exceeded projections by 36% in some periods, per GovSpend data, fueling public outrage over costs amid economic hardship. In April 2024, Tinubu imposed a three-month ban on officials’ foreign trips to curb costs, yet his own travels continued unabated, including a private trip to the UK and the Saint Lucia visit. The ongoing 10-day European leave, starting September 4, 2025, adds to the tally, with no public disclosure on whether it is personally or publicly funded. The lack of transparency around private trip funding, whether for this vacation, Saint Lucia, or earlier ones, further fuels distrust.
Moreover, Tinubu’s absence during critical moments, such as floods or protests over economic hardship, has amplified perceptions of a leader out of touch. X posts from 2024 to 2025 frequently highlight the irony of Tinubu vacationing abroad, in places like Saint Lucia and now Europe, while Nigerians face extreme hunger. “We’re suffering here, and he’s chilling in drug hubs,” one user tweeted in August 2025, a sentiment likely to intensify with his current leave and the Saint Lucia trip’s drug-related connotations.
As Nigeria battles economic collapse and insecurity, the president’s priorities are under scrutiny. While diplomacy is essential, the optics of frequent vacations abroad, often shrouded in vague terms like “working leave” or, as now, an explicit 10-day annual leave in Europe, undermine public trust. The choice of destinations like Saint Lucia, a drug transshipment point, alongside Brazil and Colombia, amplifies concerns given Tinubu’s past. His administration must balance international ambitions with domestic urgency, ensuring that time spent abroad translates into measurable relief for Nigerians without risking illicit entanglements. Until then, the image of a president jetting off, particularly for vacations in drug-linked locales, while the nation burns will remain a potent symbol of disconnect. My vehicle’s ABS and Check Engine lights illuminated simultaneously after a scan revealed a faulty upstream O2 sensor. I replaced the sensor but didn’t rescan before driving due to time constraints. While driving, the Check Engine light reappeared. I parked, scanned again, and found the upstream O2 sensor was still malfunctioning. Since the battery was disconnected during the repair, the ECU reset, likely triggering the code after a drive cycle.
I’m sure the new O2 sensor is functional, so I suspect an issue with the wiring harness or a related component. I plan to revisit the mechanic when I have time. In the meantime, I’ve noticed a significant increase in fuel consumption. |

Foreign Affairs › Top 10 African Oil Producing Countries With The Highest Fuel Prices In August by Cutezt(op): 1:20pm On Aug 20, 2025 |
Nigeria, Africa’s largest oil producer with an estimated 37 billion barrels of crude oil reserves, paradoxically grapples with some of the continent’s highest fuel pump prices, currently at around $0.617 per liter in August 2025. Despite its vast oil wealth, a combination of structural inefficiencies, policy missteps, and entrenched corruption drives this anomaly, undermining the economic benefits of its natural resources.
**Lack of Refining Capacity**: Nigeria’s four state-owned refineries in Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna have been largely non-functional for decades due to mismanagement and neglect. Despite producing 1.6 million barrels of crude oil daily, the country exports nearly all of it and imports refined petroleum products at high costs. This reliance on imports, coupled with global oil price fluctuations and a depreciating naira, significantly inflates fuel prices. Even with the Dangote Refinery, operational since September 2024, prices remain high as it sells fuel at market rates (around N898 per liter to NNPC), dashing hopes of immediate cost reductions.
**Subsidy Removal and Market Deregulation**: In May 2023, President Bola Tinubu announced the removal of fuel subsidies, a policy costing the government $3.7–$10 billion annually. This led to a price surge from N195 to over N1,000 per liter by October 2024, with prices stabilizing at around $0.617 in 2025. While subsidies kept fuel artificially cheap, their removal exposed consumers to market-driven prices, exacerbated by currency depreciation and import costs. The government’s failure to cushion this transition has intensified economic hardship, contradicting promises of lower prices.
**Corruption in the Oil Sector**: Corruption is a major driver of Nigeria’s high fuel prices, often described as part of the “resource curse.” Mismanagement and fraud in the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) have long plagued the sector. A 2012 parliamentary report uncovered a $6 billion fraud involving NNPC officials, and between 2009 and 2020, Nigeria lost $46.16 billion to crude oil theft and 4.2 billion liters of petroleum products from refineries. Corrupt practices, including fuel smuggling to neighboring countries and inflated import contracts, drain resources that could lower pump prices. Weak regulatory oversight and lack of transparency further enable cartels to manipulate supply chains, ensuring refineries remain idle to favor imports.
**Economic and Social Impacts**: High fuel prices, driven by these factors, have ripple effects. With 70% of Nigerians living in poverty, the cost-of-living crisis worsens as transport and generator fuel costs soar, inflating food and service prices. The lack of reliable electricity forces reliance on fuel-powered generators, amplifying the burden. Protests, like those in August and October 2024, reflect public frustration with price hikes and perceived government betrayal, especially after promises of economic relief.
Until these systemic issues are addressed, Nigeria’s abundant oil reserves will continue to be a paradox, fueling poverty rather than prosperity.
