COREN ACCREDITATION TEAM VISITS AE-FUNAI, COMMENDS INSTITUTION’S ACADEMIC PROGRESS The Council for Registration and Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), on Monday 16th of December 2019, visited the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, for the purpose of accrediting her engineering programmes. While receiving the accreditation panel in courtesy at the Senate Chamber, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba who was represented at the event by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Sunday Elom noted that the university started in 2011 alongside 11 other Universities during the Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, adding that it however commenced academic activities on the 5th of November 2012 with three Faculties- Sciences, Humanities, Basic Medical Sciences but currently the University has 7 Faculties, a College of Medicine and a Post Graduate School. He also explained that the Faculty of Engineering and Technology was established as the 4th Faculty in University. https://www.funai.edu.ng/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/co1x.jpg Prof. Elom in group photograph with COREN TEAM The Vice-Chancellor further stated that the University believes in the peer review mechanism of the National Universities Commission (NUC) and other educational and professional bodies like COREN, meant to ensure quality of the Nigerian University education. He further stated that the University is driven by its motto of Excellence and Integrity, stressing that Entrepreneurship remains at the core of its activities. He also noted that the University was prepared for the exercise and was committed to implementing the recommendations of the body. Speaking on behalf of the team, Brigadier- General (Engr.) Emico Eruwa congratulated the University for her scorecard in the 2018 National Universities Commission (NUC) accreditation exercise where it presented 28 programs, and had 26 full and 2 interim accreditation status for the programmes, adding that it was a landmark achievement. He further noted that COREN is aimed at enthroning quality assurance in engineering programmes, ensuring also that products of engineering departments are sound and efficient and have potential of competing with their counterparts anywhere in the world. He maintained that the visit wasn’t for witch-hunting but a peer review mechanism meant to promote partnership between industries and Universities and for growth and development of our academic institutions. AE-FUNAI VC LAYS FOUNDATION FOR CONSTRUCTION OF MOSQUE TO MARK 4TH CONVOCATION CEREMONY As part of the 4th convocation ceremony of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba, on Friday 13th December, 2019 laid the foundation stone for the construction of a mosque in the University, geared towards providing a place of worship for staff and students who are Muslims. K. Aliu thanked the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Nwajiuba for giving the Muslim Community a site on Campus to build a Mosque. He prayed that Allah should protect and continue to bless him as he keeps being an asset for both the Muslims and Christians. While responding, Prof. Nwajiuba wished the Muslim Community well while also informing them that the site is a perfect place chosen by Allah for the building of the Mosque, and pledged the University’s support to the project. National Universities Commission Resource Verification Teams for new postgraduate and undergraduate programmes in the Faculties of Humanities, Management and Social Sciences, Science and Law of the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State. They were at the University for Resource Verification Exercise, which lasted from Tuesday 10th December till Friday 13th December, 2019, when the last panel exited. She implored the University Management to give the team all necessary assistance to facilitate their work. While presenting the exit report for Law, at the Vice-Chancellor’s Conference Room, Prof. Nlerum Okogbule, leader of the panel for Law commended the efforts beingmade by the University to set up a Law programme. He stated that what was seen on ground for the programme showed high commitment for proper take-off. He pointed out that the verification exercise is to see how equipped the University is to carry on with the programme and recommend ways of improvement. Making presentation on behalf of Igbo and French Languages Panel, Prof. Ukeje congratulated the University Management for what they saw on ground, for the smooth take-off of the programmes. She advised that in mounting the programmes, there is need to follow the NUC guidelines. Professor Abiodun Adebayo and David Pam Yakubu, who presented exit reports for Biochemistry and Biotechnology postgraduate programmes, respectively, appreciated the Management for the availability of qualified staff and staff offices for Biotechnology and Biochemistry, and recommended areas of improvement. While receiving the exit report for Physics and Geophysics, on return from his official trip, the VC, Prof. Nwajiuba noted that the comments and recommendations of the verification team will be respected and implemented. He promised that the University will do all it takes to keep improving the system. The Vice-Chancellor of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba, on 12th December, 2019 held a media parley, at the University Senate Chamber as part of the pre-events for the University’s 4th Convocation ceremony held on Tuesday 17th December, 2019. https://www.funai.edu.ng/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/ME1X.jpg Prof. Nwajiuba addressing the media at the pre-convocation press conference In his opening remarks, Prof. Nwajiuba noted with relish that though the University is young but that it has become the most serious public University in Nigeria presently, adding that the institution has held convocation ceremonies consecutively since 2016, when the first set of graduates were turned-out. On the 2019 convocation ceremony, he said the University would be turning-out 512 graduates. The Vice-Chancellor further stressed that for the first time, the University would also be awarding post graduate diploma and degrees to the first set of graduates from the School of Postgraduate Studies. He also noted the need for more expansion, to accommodate the increasing students’ population, and in achieving that, the University’s helmsman calls for concerted efforts from all strategic stakeholders. On the critical issue of relationship with the host community, the Vice-Chancellor stated that it has been robust, friendly and cordial, adding that many prominent indigenes of the community had at one time or the other made donations to support the University in its march to a glorious future. He also added that the University has a good relationship with the State Government, stating that the Governor; Engr. The Vice- Chancellor, Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu–Alike, Ebonyi State, Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba has received more donations from staff, meant to support the ongoing projects in the University. The Directorate of Research and Development , Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, on Thursday, 12th December, 2019, organized 4th Research Fair and Exhibition as part of the programme of events for the University’s 4th Convocation ceremony. https://www.funai.edu.ng/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/R1X.jpg Integrated Elves (iESog) showcasing their inventions The research works which according to Dr. Amobi Ekwe, Acting Director, Research and Development, and Chairman, Organizing Committee, “focused on topical issues like Climate Change, Toxicology, Environmental Studies, Renewable Energy Sources, Groundwater Quality Studies and lots more” He further stated that the in-depth diverse nature of the researches bear out the rapid advancement of AE-FUNAI, in seven years active pursuit and determination of staff to fulfill the core mandate of the University, which are teaching, research and community service and that the researchers are driven by the motto of the University, Excellence and Integrity. Prof Nwajiuba expressed excitement that organizations outside the university system have shown interest in the Research Fair and Exhibition. He iterated that AE-FUNAI is a leading Nigerian University that is encouraging students to do more on research and entrepreneurship in order to position for the present world and the future. Nwajiuba noted that climate change is real and that a lot of opportunities abound, saying that leading countries of the world have decided to abandon fossil fuels and that Nigeria should do so to join the revolution of solar energy. He stressed that he looks forward to AE-FUNAI having more participants and remarkable outing at the National Science Exhibition Fair coming up early next year. The ever ‘good to go’ Professor Chinedum Uzoma Nwajiuba, Vice-Chancellor, Alex- Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ebonyi State, in his usual dogged determination to raise the flag high enough through, massive development in research, teaching, community service, infrastructure and green revolution, to keep the new but very fast growing University at the top and best among equals. If it is not construction of new link roads, it is renovation of some of the lapidated 2012 buildings. He is indeed opening up the University and transforming it to enviable status without stop even with the meagre resources at his disposal. On Thursday 12th of December 2019, VC took an inspection tour to the University Back Gate at Zone A of the University Campus where massive roads and bridge constructions are going on. The roads and bridge, according to him will open up the area and effectively link it to the Administrative zone and the other sites mapped out for the Mosque, New Faculty of Management and Social Sciences, and Union Buildings. According to Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba, when completed, the Guest House will be more suitable and cost effective for University guests, for proximity convenience and comfort. It will also save costs and generate revenue for the University, he added. Vice Chancellor also visited the Convocation Arena, to witness the rapid transformation going on there, preparatory for the 4th Convocation scheduled for Tuesday 17th December, 2019. AE-FUNAI RECIEVES RIVERS STATE UNIVERSITY ALTERNATIVE ENERGY COMMITTEE The Alternative Energy Committee (AEC) from the Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, River State, on Monday 9th December, 2019, visited Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, on fact finding regarding the 2.8 Mega Watts Installed Capacity Solar Plant in the University, under the Energizing Education Programme(EEP) of Rural Electrification Agency (REA). https://www.funai.edu.ng/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/EN1X.jpg DVC, Prof. Elom, receives leader of the Team with presentation of kola nut Receiving the 5 man team, at the Vice-Chancellor’s Conference Room, Prof. Sunday Elom, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, (Academic), who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba, told the visitors that the Solar Hybrid Plant which the university is enjoying now came through the Federal Government under the Energizing Education Programme. He iterated that AE-FUNAI happen to be the number 1 out of the 8 Federal Universities and 1 Federal Teaching Hospital listed in the Phase 1 Beneficiaries of the programme, adding that the project was completed and commissioned on the 2nd of August, 2019 by the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo. The Vice-Chancellor further maintained that the 2.8 mega watts installed capacity solar plant has brought 24 hours uninterrupted clean power supply and relief in diesel consumption. Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Research Team, on a mission to assess the qualitative and quantitative impact of TETFund intervention in Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, paid courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba. She added that so far 114 non-academic and 81 academic staff have benefitted from Conferences, Workshops, and Seminar sponsored by TETFund. Barr. Adekola, Head of Administrative Unit, Centre for Entrepreneurship and Employability, AE-FUNAI, informed the visiting team that the Centre was created in 2015 following NUC guidelines adding that the Centre has a number of programs for training students through which sufficient knowledge is imparted on them to improve their business communication skills in both vocational and technical aspects. The whole idea, according to him, is to prepare the students well enough to face the world market after school, to be self employed and possibly employers of labour. At the close of the Focus-Group Discussion, Prof. Elom, said that with what is happening, Nigerian University Education System is advancing in AE-FUNAI and other Universities in Nigeria as a result of TETFund Intervention. During the interactive session, SUG President, Mr. Solomon Chima stated that TETFund has been active in the University but that the young institution needed more intervention projects, such as provision of more desks and chairs for the classrooms, construction of more laboratories and building of more female and male hostels. The ten Resource Verification Panels which were comprised of 31 highly esteemed Professors in the various academic fields and from Universities across the country and 10 NUC Representatives, were at the University to verify the resources available for Postgraduate Programmes in Anatomy, Mathematics, Chemistry, Fine and Applied Arts, English and Literary Studies, Sociology, Psychology, Economics, Political Science, History and Strategic Studies, and Philosophy. Prof.Elom warmly welcomed the guests on behalf of VC, who was out of the country on official assignment, stating that the University had benefited from pilot programmes of the Federal Government of Nigeria, such as the Solar Energy that has given 24hrs Clean Power Supply to the University. Prof. Elom appreciated the Council for the critical role they are playing to ensure quality medical education in Nigeria, stressing that the University has done its best to prepare for the visit and is fully committed to respecting the MDCN position in implementing all resulting recommendations at the end of the exercisein order to ensure standard quality of the progammes. He iterated that every Medical College must have financial autonomy or semi-autonomy and every decision between the Chief Medical Director and Provost must be conveyed to the Vice-Chancellor, on daily basis. He stated that for Basic Medical School, the rules of engagement are embodied in the Redbook and that the book must be made available to Principal Officers of the School, advising that during the training of students, the school should run smoothly so thatstudents do not have to stay longer than necessary. Prof. Uwaga further recommended that more medically qualified staff should be employed and clinical supplementation paid to them. Dr. Mabel Ugochi Okpara, Head of Music Department, Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, accompanied by Dr. Sunday Nnamani, a senior lecturer in the department, on Thursday, 21st December, 2019 donated 50 Thousand Naira, to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba, for purchase of 20 bags of cement. Prof. Elom affirmed that the security situation in the school is normal and added that the university management has zero tolerance for cultism and very serious in dealing with any student who constitute nuisance within the campus. He also intimated the officers that the existing 24 hours light in the campus, courtesy of Rural Electrification Agency’s Energizing Education Programme, has immensely contributed to making AE-FUNAI safe and secure. According to him, the issue of cultism and other related crimes, such as theft, do exist due to influences from older institutions around but that these challenges are in check and have been seriously curtailed in the young University. Centre for Human Resources Development (CHRD), Alex Ekwuem Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, under the leadership of Prof. Smart Otu, on 14th November, 2019, at the University Main Auditorium, held a 2-DAY workshop on Health and Security for all staff of the university. Onwe (RTD), Chief Security Officer of the University, who spoke on “Crime Deterrent and Search Procedure in the University System”, described crime as any action that is penalized by the law, while deterrent according to him means something that is done to prevent crime and measures to instill fear and control over criminals. IKWO MONARCHS VISIT AE-FUNAI VC On Thursday 31st October, 2019, Traditional Rulers (Ndi Eze) from Amagu Ikwo, Ebonyi State led by HRH. Eze N. Nwokwa, who is also Chairman of Ikwo Council of Traditional Rulers, paid courtesy visit on the Vice-Chancellor of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ebonyi state, Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba, to familiarize with him and extend hand of fellowship to the young University. The traditional Rulers who visited include Eze N. In his introductory speech, HRH Eze N. Nwokwa, told Prof. Nwajiuba that they were there first and foremost to redeem the pledge of N30, 000 they made during the commissioning of Faculty of Agriculture. The monarch went to eulogize VC for the good work he is doing in the university and the massive transformation going on in the campus, saying his type is rare to come by. He however requested VC to consider Ikwo indigenes for employment and admission into the university, as they are landlords and part of the university. Mr. Cornelius Offia, Manager, AE-FUNAI Micro Finance Bank, an indigene of Ikwo, who was called by VC to give update on admission reservation for Ikwo indigenes averred that Ikwo community has always been given sufficient chances to study in the university. He told the traditional rulers that 45 slots were reserved for Ikwo candidates for 2019/2020 admission out of which only 24 who met the required criteria have been offered admission with 22 chances yet to be taken. The Vice-Chancellor, thanked the traditional rulers for their kind words and show of ‘love’. He stated that whatever is possible would be done to engage Ikwo people as staffers in the institution even in the face of growing unemployment rate in the country. “We will continue to employ as God gives the opportunity to accommodate as many as possible”, he said. Prof. Nwajiuba appealed to the traditional rulers to advise their people to desist from stealing and destroying university farm produce. NUC REPRESENTATIVES ARRIVE AE-FUNAI FOR ACCREDITATION EXERCISE First set of National Universities Commission (NUC) Accreditation team arrive Alex-Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State to commence accreditation for the following programmes – Agriculture, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Agri-business and Management, Theatre Arts, Business Education, Education Biology, Education Chemistry, Education Mathematics, Education Physics, Education English and Literary studies and Physical and Health Education. https://www.funai.edu.ng/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/NU1X-1.jpg PROF. SUNDAY ELOM (DVC ACADEMIC) WELCOMING THE ACCREDITATION TEAM While presenting Vice – Chancellor’s welcome address to NUC Accreditation team, DVC Academic, Prof. Sunday Elom apologized for the unavoidable absence of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba, whom he said was away on official assigment. He noted that accreditation exercise is indeed vital to the existence and relevance of the university system. Speaking with the team, Prof. Elom admitted his faith in the National Universities commission to carry out their duties diligently. He expressed appreciation to the Commission in using the peer review mechanism towards ensuring quality work and respect for the Nigerian University system. He noted confidently that the University is prepared for the exercise and is fully committed to respecting the NUC position in implementing all resulting advice and recommendations that will be made at the end of the exercise and thereafter prayed for the fruitful stay of the team on campus. Theatre Arts had Mr. Dennis Tumba, who represented Executive Secretary of NUC, with Prof. E.Mabel of University of Abuja as team leader, Prof. Doki Gowon of Benue state University and Prof. Umar Buratai of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria. Physical and Health Education team was made up of Mr. Daniel Sanusi, NUC representative, Prof. O.A Adebgesan of University of Ibadan,team chairman, Prof. Sadiq Ismaila of Bayero University, Kano and Prof. E.I Achalu of University of Portharcourt. Education English and Literary Studies was made up of Mr. Olujimi Anthony Awobgile who represented NUC while Prof. Kolawole Clement Olaniran of University of Ibadan, team chairman, Prof. Chinwe Muodumogu of Benue State University and Prof. Nnadi Chukwuma of University of Abuja. Prof. E. Mabel, on behalf of the teams, appreciated the Vice-Chancellor for the warm reception given to them and assured that they would be objective in their work as they are people of integrity.
