The governor of Gombe State has faulted the increased revenue allocation for States because it also calls for increased obligations on the part of the States. For instance, following the increase from 24-31 percent revenue allocation, State will now be responsible for the funding and operation of public secondary schools. The governor then went further to suggest that with the increase of responsibilities on the State level, they should be given 40 percent resource allocation. http://www.guardiannewsngr.com/news/article07 You know what I have to say to this Governor, why not have the States fund their own projects? Afterall, if you are truly practicing Federal System of Government, assistance from the center should be limited to disaster situations only. Frankly, I am not sure where these Governors get-off thinking they deserve an hand out. If you need money to fund your schools/projects, auction off State land, and impose an agricultural tax or some other form of tax that targets critical economic sectors in your State. Depending on Niger-Delta money is bad for the integrity of your State, and it is bad for the security and well-being of the nation. |
eveseh, you are the last person I thought would post that. Its fine, precious. I still love you. |
Plans by the indigenous of Bakassi to secede from Nigeria and create a sovereign State of Ambazania has been disclosed earlier today in Abuja. The plan which is being called SCAPO hopes to create the Republic of Ambazania and which will later apply for ECOWAS membership. The roadmap for the creation of Ambazania has been sent to President Olusegun Obasanjo, the Secretary General of the United Nations, Mr. Kofi Anan, President Paul Biya of Cameroon, Prime Minister Jacques Chirac of France, Tony Blair of United Kingdom, the President of the United Nations Security Council, Chairman African Union,(AU) the Secretary General of the Commonwealth of nations, Executive Secretary of ECOWAS and the Chairman of Peace and Security Council of the AU. What do you guys think about this development, and are you in support of it? Link: http://www.tribune.com.ng/18062006/news/news1.html |
The Senate just passed a bill that gives life pension for Military heads of State. You would think that with the new democracy, past leaders that abused power would be put on trial, and if found guilty, executed. But in what is being practiced in Nigeria, past heads of States with blood of the innocent on their hands are given monetary compensation for the rest of the lives. Where is the monetary compensation for all those that were brutally murdered by these monsters? Furthermore, who are the Senators really representing when they pass a bill like this? At the very least, they should attach a mandatory review for all previous heads of State that would deny them access to this pension money if they are found to have participated in gross mis-conduct while in office. Do you all support bills like this? Link: http://odili.net/news/source/2006/jun/16/323.html |
Okay, lets back away from all this suggestion of 24 hour bans. You make it seems as if I will tolerate anything I am given. My posts are decent, and they are free from lies. Just because it is not the "Thumbs up" to Nigeria, does not make me a bad person. Do not compare me to light-headed posters like Bolex and co. Personally, were it not for a relative lack of hard-line Nigerian political forums, I won't even be posting here. And from what I have seen, me posting here is mutually beneficial. But if you like, go ahead and ban anyone that is capable of stimulating thought and responses. Maybe then, you and mariory can debate by giving each other pats on your backs as you commend Nigeria and turn a blind eye to every bout of genocide in hopes of promoting unity. |
Girls are on Nairaland? |
Maybe it was never supposed to work. The present form of government that Nigeria is practicing is supposed to be a Federal System, but the power of the President is completely out of line. In fact, it was only a few years that the president suspended the Governor and Legislature of a State and imposed a military man to govern the State for several months. |
Awww. ToyM28 ![]() |
Think of something kool, then just know that Afeni is all that and then some. ![]() |
All you need to know to get famous is act like Afeni. ![]() |
Seun:What was the point of making this thread if your mind was already made up? ![]() And judging by the response from people on this thread, who is really out of touch with Nairaland? |
The Nigerian middle class own nothing. They are just fortunate to be educated enough to hold a 9-5. |
Ka, but does that not leave you at the mercy of those that operate the radio or television? Now, take into account that the media in Nigeria is under the control of a small hand full of people, and what you have here is a recipe for disaster. The ruling class is either in direct control, or by means of manipulation and threats, is in indirect control of the media. They in short, dictate to the people what they should believe. |
Drusilla, but without literacy, are the people really practicing democracy, or are they doing what they are told? I mean, if I was trying to form an opinion on a particular issue, I will read 4-5 different sources and then come up with some sort of middle ground. Illiterates on the other hand, don't have access to this information. So, they are more likely to base their entire opinion on whatever is presented to them. And if you are trying to persuade someone to accept your views, you will provide information that only reiterate your line of thought. |
Yes, Rhodalyn, it is the best I have had. |
I am eating a chocolate bar. It taste like Rhodalyn. ![]() |
Is your father Nigerian? |
That would explain the passing of the anti-gay law that calls for punishment of 5 years in prison, for not only those that partake in homosexual acts, but those that support them as well. |
wow, that is terrible. I think people should be held accountable for what they say. If that means jail time, so be it. |
toshman, are you serious about Governors using State money to buy stories about their accomplishments? If that is the case, those governors should be charged with mis-appropriation of public funds. |
I won't say Nike4luv is kool or anything, I just noticed she no longer logs on. |
I don't think it is possible for my family to disown me. Besides, I don't go around looking for their approval before I do what I want. |
Wow, thats extreme. |
IBB got banned? Did nike4luv get banned too? ![]() |
Why Arabs? |
Rhodalyn changed to a male? |
What is morning glory? |
Thats a good point. But what is the benefit for the ruling class to promote the development of a middle class when it would only result in more work on their part, and an increased pressure to perform? |
