Unfortunately your answers were not very helpful,  I guess I phrased my questions wrongly.

I'm not asking whether I can 'play mp3 files on ubuntu' or whether there is software available to meet my needs. As one who has succesfully configured and installed ALSA for an ESS1964 chipset on the incredibly evil redhat7.2, I can proudly join you in saying that nothing is impossible with linux and the 'net.

HOWEVER.

There are patent/legal issues that prevent some distro providers from giving you the original versions of the packages they install, and these modifications often cause problems down the line. The examples I gave were the horrible mpeg123 library in redhat9 and the modified kernel that had crippled ntfs.o support, both requiring lengthy configging sessions, and ensuring that if you build a lot of stuff from source you are in deep shyzer with such distro's. You will agree with me that redhat's inclusion of a nonstandard glibc library has caused many a headache. Everyone has run into that problem at one time or another, and reinstalling glibc is a big no-no (dont even suggest it!)

the bottom line is this: a distro like slack or debian includes original unmodified headers and binaries. Redhat and mandrake include modified binaries to escape patent infringement. I find that most of the things I do (region bypassing on encrypted dvds, mp3 transcoding, etc) require such software to be installed, hence my concern.

If I install ubuntu and have to rip the guts of the OS out whenever I want to do something nontrivial I will personally starve a penguin to death,

Tekken: I agree, tekken is awesome. However the crown of 'ultimate' fighting game was taken away by soulcalibur a long time ago, try it out!

I was in an internet cafe at magodo (yes MAGODO where all d rish-rish peepuls live) the other day and gues what?

EVERYONE was commiting fraud. EVERYBODY was yahoo-yahoo-ing! Even a pair of totally fine (and Behind) babes  that walked in, scamming middle aged white men.

Before u ask me how I knew, these people were not even hiding it, one guy even laughed out loud and called others to 'see' that he had been banned from an online dating site for fraud! People were looking over each others shoulders and giving tips, etc.

Many of these scams were via yahoo messenger, and connecting via dating sites.

Summary: Online dating across the water with naija men you don't know is insane. If you must, be sure never to send any gifts or money or credit card details. if he threatens to go or throws a tantrum, get rid of him. For all u know his picture is fake and he looks like an orang-utang crossed with raw hamburger.

Heh, u guys dont get me started on games 

Street fighter was like a religion for me in Uni. The fighting league then was intense! We used to play at an Arcade at ojuelegba called underground- only the very best went to play there! You go there to get beaten soundly- and perhaps make a name for yourself! Later on the combat league moved on to Tekken. Nowadays however I don't play anymore because all the great players have either stopped playing or become godlike, and all the new kids are just no challenge at all!!!!

On the strategy side, I could die on top total annihilation and starcraft, like abacha. We used to have 4-5 player warfare at a cybercafe I once worked for. The thrill of commanding your troops in combat and fighting to save your allies from enemy airstrikes! flying in supplies to friendly forces trapped by seige tanks! racing against the clock to construct a key weapon capable of turning the tides of the game! pure heaven! I'm currently trying to get into Sid Meier's Civilization 4. Hope its as good as alpha centauri!



my top game at the moment is Half Life 2: That is by far the best game I've played on any system bar none. I hardly have time to play it sha, thanks to CORPORATE NIGERIA 


Multiplayer: I'll have to go with Quake and Unreal. Never got into the bigbig  team stuff like counterstrike. Since different versions of those games are basically the same game with diferent rules, I can't name a particular version either way: as the occasion requires!

When I was much younger I could not pry myself away from DOOM and DOOM 2. Doom 3 is cool but, meh.

Final fantasys 1 and 6 imersed me for many happy hours in my mid adolescence (played via emulator). The memories!!!!

However there is ONE fighting game I played recently and felt the old thrill once again: NARUTO:clash of the Ninja! I swear if you know what the word 'naruto' means you will go crazy about this game!

PS: burnout and need for speed underground rule the driving school. Born too slow! w00t!

Ever since a recent hardware crash, I've wiped off my slackware installation and havent gotten around to reinstalling linux. I was thinking of going with Ubuntu because of all the praise, but what donmayor said has gotten me scared.

So I'd like to ask the ubuntu experts a few questions: Is ubuntu a 'bad boy' distro like slackware and knoppix/debian or is it a 'legally sound' distro like redhat?

I mean this in the sense that redhat requires kernel modifications for questionable functionality such as NTFS access, MP3 playback, CSS decryption support, strong encryption support, captive-NTFS support, full winex functionality, etc. It was a real pain battling redhat every step of the way. Slackware gave me freedom, because it used standard versions of all the software, patent violations notwithstanding, but I had to pay the price: No real package management and needing to compile practically every program I installed myself (imagine my dismay when the hard drive died)

Pls help out. Downloading gigs worth of ISOs is a real problem for me. I had hoary hedgehog ISOs but but u can guess what happened to them!
