TV/Movies / Re: Wolverine 2009 (May contain Spoilers) by dakmanzero(m): 12:48pm On May 04, 2009
in short:

Nigerian scenes were cute but badly researched and mediocre. There are 'villagers' speaking igbo in Lagos, unable to understand english, and a 'diamond merchant' in a land that does not produce diamonds, at the top of a skyscraper filled with soldiers with red berets (nigerian army red berets, since when?!??!?!?!)

That was just nonsense. Other evidence of poor research: our Igbo villager sounding like some caveman saying the rock came 'from the sky' and other such nonsense. As if most Igbos in Lagos, literate or not, are not more likely to come up with a more practical or superstitious-christian explanation.

If they had just relocated the whole thing to Abakaliki and abandoned the skyscraper, instead making it a mansion surrounded with thug guards, it would have made a world of difference.

A weekend in Nigeria for research would have done wonders. Instead we get this crap.

On top of that. the movie itself was poorly researched and inaccurate. Anyone who knows anything about x-men will be able to tell you how much bullshit was shoveled into that movie story wise.

However, the xmen movies are less faithful to the comics than iron man, spiderman, the hulk, etc so we can forgive them. the 'replacement' story they came up with was nice, in my opinion, and the new heroic wolvie, though completely fake and an invention of hugh jackman, is a likeable and interesting character.
TV/Movies / Re: The Wolverine Movie, Lagos And The Igbo Language by dakmanzero(m): 12:33pm On May 04, 2009
That scene was absolute rubbish and almost killed the movie for me.

The scene had nothing to do with marina or UBA. Where the hell in Lagos can you see a collection of shanty buildings surrounding an abandoned skyscraper??!?!? absolute fabrication, absolute rubbish.

Obviously the director/screenwriters were just doing a cash-in on the recent blood diamond inspired craze, as seen in 24 and countless other movies with 'african' locations.

This is evidenced by 24's very own IKE DUBAKU appearing as the 'Nigerian' ringleader, talking about 'Diamonds' as if we have diamonds in Naija.

The natural resource that foreigners come here to leech off of is OIL, but hollywood associates oil with Arabs and suicide bombings so they just put diamonds there instead!

Then theres the nonsense of killing villagers IN LAGOS

Jesus christ what part of Lagos are they talking about? And where in Lagos would you find a village where people need a translator and speak only Igbo? (Thank god they actually used a Nigerian language, though they got the location wrong 100%)

What would have made the scene work? Lose the military-defended skyscraper (complete fabrication as far as Lagos is confirmed), Make it a hacienda style compound with OPC-esque mufti-wearing thugs (we can asume it is somewhere in Aja, Epe, ikorodu, or wherever all those big men go to build their little empires) and make the 'villagers' speak Yoruba (more plausible that some superpowered white ubermensch could show up from nowhere and massacre them all without causing the motherload of all riots)

All they needed to do was spend a weekend or so cruising around Lagos for research and they would have done a much better job of it. As it stands, it is complete bollocks and makes it seem like they really didn't try hard for this movie.

They didnt even research the comics well anyway. the movie was pretty crap in that regard.
TV/Movies / Re: X-men Origins: Wolverine - Excellent Cinematography by dakmanzero(m): 12:21pm On May 04, 2009
hey iice. loooomng time

Nah, they didnt change the japanese woman. She'll be in the (rumoured) sequel (not so much of a rumour if you wait till after the credits)

In the comics, Wolvie had a canadian girlfriend called silverfox beforehand. The white woman in this movie is Kayla silverfox. Many changes abound, but dont worry, Yuriko is still alive and well!

@infoseye: EA is a publisher. They are not qualified to offer anyone any awards except their employes. Plus GOW was published by sony, and not EA.

@ogauspsp3: GOW2 is a 2007 game, not 2008, so you are talking out your arsehole. DMC4 never went head to head with it, and it recieved golden joystick nominations, as well as awards and nominations from various outlets. But then, awards have nothing to do with quality.

@unleashed: Chains of olympus is def one of the best games on PSP, but it doesnt make sense to compare it to dmc4 on the mighty ps3.

Personally I feel GOW is overall a better franchise to DMC, as it is more consistent (DMC 2 was rubbish and DMC 3 was too hard, but GOW is excellent across all 3 releases to date) BUT the top games in the DMC franchise are far superior ONLY as pure action games.

They require more skill, have more depth and more style than GOW. GOW is also marred by annoying and out-of-place puzzle or block-pushing nonsense and bottomless pits of death that just dont fit in the flow of the game.

GOW games on PS2 have better graphics than DMC games on ps2 (not DMC4 on ps3), and better storylines, better presentation, larger scale. They are also easier to play so people can just mindlessly buttonmash without fear, while DMC will punish you severely for playing like a god-d@mned scrub!

And Badriyyah, you have committed sacrilege by claiming that res4, the undisputed king of Resident Evil, is not as good as the older pseudo-puzzle-adventure fixed angle human-tank games. Repent!

Gaming / Re: Devil May Cry Vs God Of War 2 by dakmanzero(m): 6:57pm On Apr 02, 2009
Hmm. lots of DMC hate here

smiley

Personally I feel although the GOW series seems to be better right now, at the moment there's no GOW game that can hang with DMC4- it's just too good.

Story:

DMC has never been about serious story, its just all about style and being a total badass with over the top SWAGGER! Kratos is an awesomely angry, crazy, vicious mofo but he is just too CRUDE to touch Dante's SWAGGER!!!!!

Graphics:

The ps2 GOW games have been graphical powerhouses that dwarfed practically all their peers, including the rough-edged DMC's, but DMC4 is such a leap ahead it will remain to be seen if GOW3 can meet up! If you havent seen DMC4, please do.

Gameplay:

Some people said GOW has a better mix than dmc4. I disagree. The puzzles in GOW have always been the most irritating part of the game, just behind the bloody worthless platform sections. DMC abandons that nonsense (few puzzles and jumping sections) in favour of changing up the PRIMARY gameplay which is the COMBAT. And many people complain about DMC being hard woith good reason, you have to FIGHT, you cant ust mash buttons like in GOW. GOW is a very slick, polished and streamlined button masher but a button-masher nonetheless. DMC is for those who have dexterity, skill, speed, reflexes, coordination and STAMINA!!!!!!!

In the end? Well the time I spent playing gow1 and dmc4 rank among the best time I have had playing video games so I love them both!

(Neither can compare to Ninja Gaiden 1 on the xbox though, the ultimate action game, )
Gaming / Re: Online multiplayer gaming in Nigeria. by dakmanzero(m): 6:42pm On Apr 02, 2009
Online gaming in naija is not worth it

lag is awful regardless of the time u play

even in the middle of the night on the best links

latency is just too high since we are too far away. bandwidth doesnt mean squat. u can have 3000meg download speed and it doesnt mean shishi if the latency is high as it is

only turnbased games like poker, cards, civilisation, certain mmorpg's can be played from here, or offline online games like mirrors edge

Gaming / Re: Will You Support A Nigerian-developed Game? by dakmanzero(m): 11:46am On Dec 12, 2008
Hmmm some nice replies.

I understand where those who want AAA games are coming from. However we have to understand that all entertainment is based on the 'loss leader' model, where a huge amount is spent upfront and then recouped afterwards.

Naija does not yet have a gaming community large enough to support this model. Also, the majority of hardcore gamers are used to getting high quality titles for free or at low prices (pirated) and as a result, anyone who tries to cater to them is doomed.

I used to look down on low quality nollywood films until I started looking at them with an economist's eye. the audience that laughs at the poor special effects and acting is the same audience that would rather buy a pirated camera rip of the latest summer blcokbuster than pay 1,500 for a world-class cinema experience with multichannel surround sound, LFE effects, high quality projection and a cinematic aspect ratio. Therefore it makes sense that if you are making a movie in Nigeria, you should churn out recyclable stories and shoot as fast and as cheaply as possible. Multiple takes and lengthy character building sessions are wasteful and will stop the film from breaking even. rampant piracy means that your film will be pirated months after release, so you must keep churning out cheap sequels in order to constantly skim a profit off the leading edge.

Applying this philosophy to games, unfortunately is unlikely to work. the sucess of a game is based on its quality, people can sit like zopmbies and watch poorly acted nonsense as long as they are fooled into thinking it is 'what really happens in our culture' but no-one will play a crappy game.

However, people will play a compelling or addictive game no matter how simplistic the graphics or sound quality- for example minesweeper, zuma, peggle, tetris.

The approach I feel a Nigerian developer should take is to focus on the gameplay. Keeping it simple but fun, and create a reason for their existence by being relevant to the Nigerian situation.

So back to the question- if you were presented with a Nigerian game that, while simple and lacking in AAA graphics and sounds, was compelling, fun to play and relevant to the Nigerian condition in some way or form, would you support it?
Gaming / Re: Why Hasn't The Ps3 Been Hacked? by dakmanzero(m): 10:34am On Dec 12, 2008
This is a cut-and paste article, but it still deserves a response smiley

The PS3 is not quite as bulletproof as the article suggests. If someone figures out a way to hijack the playstation OS the way it was done on the PSP, then all bets are off and it's only a matter of time before the system is cracked wide open. All the boot security in the world will not save you from a runtime buffer overflow vulnerability, even with hardware protection. I feel the reasons the ps3 has not been hacked are:

(a) The PS3 homebrew scene- ie the smart kids that actually do the cracking before the pirate vultures swoop in to reap the benefits- is too busy with ps3 linux to bother. People can do great things with ps3 linux despite its limited processing power and restricted hardware access, for example there are super NES emulators and DIVX decoders, blu-ray backup utilities, etc that work on the ps3 through linux.

Other avenues for homebrew include ps3 FLASH support, and blu-ray JAVA support, which has already been used to write an emulator for the playstation OS outside of linux.

(b) The 360 is just as locked down as the ps3, yet hackers learned how to crack th drive's firmware. Blu-ray drives are't susceptible to the same problem, and inexpensive mass duplication of bluray discs is not yet widespread. Also the size of bluray games means creating a huge library of games to run from the hard drive is not as feasible as it could be in 5 years' time.

namedropping halo on a ps3 thread, not very wise :-D

However halo is far more significant than call of duty, if not half life 2. In terms of influence on games released nowadays, I'd say halo and half life are about tied in terms of significance.
Gaming / Re: Play PlayStation 2 (PS2) Games On PC by dakmanzero(m): 9:36am On Dec 01, 2008
TP, i disagree with you wholesale!

it is better to buy a ps2 to play ps2 games. I will even go further and say buy a ps3 with backward compatibility enabled. (ie above 40gig hard disk). Both are cheaper than the mega gaming rig you will need to run the emu's which by the way are still not working properly, after all this time. Plus there is no hassle to get the emu to work.

In the case of a dreamcast, since the DC hardware is so hard to find, it is somewhat justified, but the emulation is still imperfect. Personally I'd say if you want to support your favourite SEGA games, there are competent remakes of almost every important DC game except perhaps shenmue1, on other more readily available consoles.

If a Nigerian developer were to create games for PC that are relevant to Nigeria and our various cultures, will you be willing to support them by paying for the games or will you just pirate them the way we do with games developed overseas?

Also what kind of game do you think a Nigerian developer should create that will appeal to you but not require the crazy high cost of a firstperson shooter game or a big huge adventure/grand theft auto/racing game?

Assassins creed is excellent but flawed- and you may not be forgiving if your system isn't up to spec. By up to spec, I mean ludicrously expensive and overpowered.

To get the most out of AC, I suggest you pick up a 360 or ps3 and get it on one of those. Much smoother and less buggy.

Romance / Re: Do Virgins Make Better Partners? by dakmanzero(m): 9:18am On Apr 15, 2008
In the days when virginity was valued, early marriage was valued even more.

Then, if a girl was not married by age 20, the parents would start consulting witchdoctors.

A woman who remains a virgin up to the marriage age of nowadays (27-33) most likely has other, more complicated problems- or is a devoted follower of a particular religion, or both.

The fact remains that non-virgin men who prefer virgins for whatever reason will very likely still seek fresh virgins outside their marriage once their wife has been 'f@cked slack'. There's more to life than the ridiculous double standard of sleeping around and expeting your wife not to do the same.

The only man who deserves a virgin is a man who is a virgin himself, and is as serious about whatever religion his virgin wife is serious about. Nothing wrong with a 2 born again virgins getting together, or a muslim virgin taking a virgin woman as his first wife.

Romance / Re: Advantages Of Polygamy? by dakmanzero(m): 12:51pm On Jan 24, 2008
Disclaimer: I do not support polygamy. My stance on marriage has always been clear: children first, and children suffer in a polgygamous home.

However polygamy has advantages and SERIOUS disadvantages. since this thread is abnout advantages, I will mention them first. The disadvantages are so glaring as to be obvious and I won't insult anyone's intelligence by listing them.

ADVANTAGES OF POLYGAMY

1. The MAN gets to truly satisfy his sexual desire without having to cheat!

explanation:

(a) Hardly any women out there can truly satisfy the desire of the average african man with his oversized love-stick. After the AFRIKAMAN
has pounded his wife into brutal submission with his animalistic, shoot-to-kill, completely unromantic approach to sex, she will definitely be sore and unable to continue while his power member still stands erect and poised to kill and destroy the hymens of poor sobbing virgins. Who better to quell this RAGING DEMON than an entourage of junior wives?

(b) Not all women can or will provide the complete range of sexual experiences. Marry a woman taller than you and you can say byebye to the comfortable sixtynine for eternity. Marry the much-too-portable type and you may find a spoon plus liplock too much of a hassle till kingdom come. So why not go for all flavours and varieties?!?!??!?!??!!!!! Toyota during the week and Beemer for the weekends. Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiiii!!!!!

2. The MAN gets to truly feel like an ALPHA MALE LORD even if he is a nobody in this world!

explanation:

AFRICAN MEN love to lord it over a huge crowd of people, whether they merit it or not. Only in a polygamous marriage can the BIG DADDY stride confidently into his home, to have four or more women kneel before him, each one competing to expose more of her bosom than the others to his downward-facing gaze, each flanked by an entourage of children bearing gifts of food and relieving him of his burdens? eh? eh? How else can the Labourer, maiguard or okada man, after a day of being downtrodden, spat upon, ground into the dirt by people half his age speaking in funky janded accents, restore his bruised male pride and reach down with happiness to scratch a once-more-testosterone-charged, fully engorged *foto*, erect and ready for action, as he gazes upon his harem and his progeny? eh? eh? eh?  grin

3. There is an alternative to divorce when the cheating bastard's karma comes full circle

4. Inability or lack of desire of the wife to have (male) children does not have to lead to the end of a marriage

Seriously speaking.

Polygamy only really benefits the man in the long run. I do not doubt that a junior wife is motivated by some overconfident illusion that she can eat the older wife's lunch, but that impression is just misguided: Ploygamy benefits men and no-one else.

It is, therefore, a selfish thing for a man to do. My opinion is that marriage is NOT a gateway to a happy life (thats just a lie to get young people to accept responsibility).

It is, rather, a mutual sacrifice that must be made by both parties for the sake of a new generation. It is a man and woman accepting to relinquish their desire to work for personal happiness and replace it with shared responsibility for the happiness of the children. Anything else is just a dangerous lie. Why will I leave my wife for her inability to satisfy my sexual drive if I have already decided that my sexual satisfaction is a sacrifice I must make for the sake of my children?

If we have the right mindset/approach to marriage, the above 'advantages' will all be meaningless, because, as a man, I have already given up those worldly pleasures and accepted my responsibility to raise and train the next generation, and then drop dead and DIE when my usefulness expires. shikena.

TV/Movies / Re: Voltron Defender Of The Universe by dakmanzero(m): 9:37am On Jan 24, 2008
Voltron is really dear to the hearts of those that grew up in Nigeria during the 80's and early 90s.

Endless reruns by channels 5 and 10, the same thing repeated over and over again, and we loved it! lololol!

It looks really bad today, but the nostalgia value alone is gold.

Trivia:

DO you know that voltron was really an Anime (manga) called 'king of a thousand beasts GO-LION' ?
It was changed a lot to make it into a children's cartoon.

In the original, there was a lot more brutal violence, members of the voltron force died, In fact at a point the planet Earth was destroyed and the voltron force went on a suicide revenge mission from then till the end of the series!

Keith's brother sacrificed himself to kill syncline (the evil prince) commiting double suicide!

the ro-beasts were not robots, they were disgraced commanders and associates of syncline who were punished by being sent to die at the hands of voltron, as the only way to regain their honour (in death)

syncline hated his father because he is actually a half-breed between an alien and a human woman who happens to look exactly like the princess! That's why he is so fixated on her- she looks like his mother! The storyline involving syncline secretly sabotaging his father's plans in order to save the humans (who he feels are his real people) was completely removed.

Of course by the end, after killing his father, syncline turns on the voltron force 100% and is killed when keiths brother leaps to his death, pulling him down alongside him.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, there's so much more that was changed! I'm sure if they left it in its original form, many of us would have had scarred childhoods, lololol!!!!

Funny enough i was watching an episode once and was shocked to see they actually left an attempted rape in, but they changed the dialogue so it sounded like the prince was going to kill the princess instead, lololol!

the right to criticize is not limited to the creator

otherwise you wouldnt be able to look at a knitted sweater and say 'what rubbish' if you cant spend several hours of your life doing something better.

The bottom line is, whether or no0t anyone else can do better, the Nollywood movies are of terrible quality, and unless we all reject them as crap they will continue making them.

In short, the people watching these rubbish movies are responsible for their poor quality. These guys have money. Stop buying the movies and theyll have an incentive to spend it.

We like to give excuses like not having enough time (a valid excuse, by the way) but when it comes down to it, the reflexes are just not there anymore!

Thank goodness then that this new SF game is designed to be less complicated to get into. Watching daigo, BAS and the rest of them in international streetfighter tournaments really puts things into perspective!
Gaming / Re: Street Fighter 4 Revealed! First Screenshot by dakmanzero(m): 5:57pm On Dec 26, 2007
How much of the difference you notice depends on how 'into' street fighter you are. Some people cant tell the difference between sf2 and super sf2 turbo, but others (like me) can write a book! cheesy

I think the biggest difference will be the graphics, which look purely amazing. I'm interested in seeing how they can implement the strict frame based gameplay of streetfighter with fluidly moving celshaded graphics, though. If they end up with EX's floaty timing, it will be rubbish, But SF3's 'burst' animation was a step in the right direction,

If this comes out on ps3 or xbox360 I'll surely get it even if its rubbish. SF is a cherished part of my youth
Romance / Re: Nigerian Ladies And Nigerian Movies by dakmanzero(m): 1:19pm On Nov 27, 2007
Its not a surprise that women enjoy home movies.

Men are visual creatures, we love to look upon things that are pleasing to the eye. Thats why we enjoy movies shot in hi-def digital IMAX, great special effects, beautiful camera angles.

Some may say men are football crazy but how many of us went mad over the african cup of nations. We enjoy the premiership because of the glitz and glamour, the presentation, the speed the action the amazing skills of the players shown in glorious widescreen high definition digital tv.

Women on the other hand are more emotional- they are more in tune with the human aspect of whatever story you tell or show them. They only need the barest representation of the idea- once you have their ear with a good story they will respond with rapt attention. The closer home the story hits, the better the resonance. Crappy acting, bad camera angles, disjointed plots and illogical story devices are just minor irritations to them- for us it turns the movie into some sort of sick joke.

Nigerian movies therefore have a big advantage- they are about local subject matters which are more 'real' to the audience, (even if they are about blatantly idiotic ideas like 'magun') and so the ladies are more forgiving about the substandard aspects.

I feel that for any emerging entertainment market, there will always be a major bias towards one market segment until the medium matures.

look at video games: for over 30 years, women, girls and the elderly have been completely excluded from the target market- the focus on video quality and cutthroat competition eventually spread the audience past young boys to young men but only recently has the elderly man, the family man and the female human being been included in the audience- and it took some major leaps in technology.

The same applies to nollywood. for now, the lack of acting talent, directing skill and technology means that they have to pander to the audience that demands the least (in terms of the above) which is young and middle-aged women, the soap opera demographic.

We can only hope that the money made from them allows them to improve on other aspects of the movies, and eventually attract those of us with REAL money to spend.
