chief batiatus: useless article, why not go to SA and see for yourself if we can match what they have in 50yrs of hard labor? my brothers economy is more than the volume of sales o, its just like the way people ignorantly compare china to america because china is selling more second-hand goods, the value of an economy ultimately comes to the quality of life enjoyed by its citizens. The infrastructure in South Africa will take Nigeria nothing LESS THAN 50 SERIOUS YEARS WITH HARD LABOR AND NO SINGLE CORRUPTION TO BUILD. South Africa has more than 25 cities that can measure with any european city, Nigeria has only Abuja and it is even been hurriedly underdeveloped by all the ignorant FCT ministers that came after El Rufai (first position to Aliero and then Bala). Lagos is a dilapidated old city though fashola is trying, besides this, every other thing are shambles shambles shambles. Starting with Kano it is the biggest dust bin i have ever seen, Port Harcourt is nothing chaos, Ibadan old, dirty and unassuming. Batiatus, please take a look at the link I got from Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Government_budget_by_country Showing revenues by national governments for different countries in 2011 On line 33, South African govt earned $102bn to cater for about 40 million people On line 43, Israel earned $66bn to cater for about 6 million people On line 53, Angola earned $43bn to cater for about 22 million people On line 66, Nigerian government earned $23bn to cater for about 150million people |

mekaboy: Mekaboy, we shouldn't be emotional when arguing, always try to use facts, don't write things that can't be substantiated, someone suffered for the money that was used to educate you, the least you should do is constructivly critise the govt, The money available to the FG in the past two years is roughly $30bn for infrastructure development, it's easy to see how much may have been spent or how much has been stolen For roads, the ave is $3.5m per km of dual carriage for brand new construction I wold estimate about $1m per km of same road for removation. How many do u know have been done? How much do u think has been spent? The same for power plants, schools, airports, etc etc etc, The unit prices are available on the Internet, The achievements are available even on Naira land Multiply the unit cost by the avaiebvemets and see the value spent. Coming here to say they ate $8bn out of $15bn is illiterate beer palour talk. Until we start doing this we will to see when a government is performing or not, a lot of us will continue to have unrealistic expectations from the FG, a lot of us will not see why the FG needs to take certain steps to increase its revenue base. 1 Like |

Lordlexy: @DaLover. When has initiating policies demands expense of money? Nobody entirely fault the removal of subsidy, but the timing was anti ppl. Again, you will agree with me that even after it was partially removed, the funds have not been judiciosly used because, so far, there are little evidence to that effect. Lastly, a government that's unable to a considerable measure meet the social -basic needs of her citizens such as housing, portable water and security cannot be said to have performed. It is also understandable the junk of income this govt generated from oil is quite unprecedented when you compared it with the previou govt and for that singular reason, in general, most ppl share the sentiment that this govt should have done more. Today, without prejudice, you cannot turn to 3 sectors of the economy and claim they have reached their peak in terms of performances and service delivery. Granted that Mr. President inherited most of the decay, but then, that was the more reason why Nigerians overwhemely voted him to bring sanity. The wanton level of corruption cannot be described as sanity, the unabated insecurity and all of that are indices that could rub the President of what ever glory you claim he achieved. Also, this corruption is rift virtually in all sectors that it appears like it has been instituted. Two years fairly, is enough to restore the ppl's confidence. I wish him well and success. Lordlexy, I would like to start with your reference to timing, and I will state categorically that at no time will it ever be perfect to remove subsidy from fuel, be it now, present or past... How exactly did you confirm that the monies not channeled into subsidy are not being utilized? Do you have empirical evidence or you just felt like writing it? Let me give a quick example, assuming the FG has $15b to spend annually on infrastructure (capital expenditure), there is a conservative estimate out there that nigeria needs about $200b to bring our infrastructure up to par, I.e decent infrastructure, not European or American standard or anything of a sort, cos those guys spend trillions of dollars achieving that. Here your government has $15b annually, wouldn't it be sensible to scrap the $1b used to fund subsidy and increase this figure to $16b. The fact that he figure has increase from $15 to $16 doesn't mean that infrastructure will magically appear because the infrastructure the country country requires is in excess of $200b. The solution is to phase the projects and Cary them out small small. The best ways to reduce corruption is not by chasing around with poorly paid EFCC officials, it is to reduce the opportunities for corruption. These opportunities come when govt engages itself in running businesses it should stay away from. Running banks, running pension funds, running universities, hospitals, oil establishments, airports, telecoms, power etc.. If the govt should stop running all these things, corruption will reduce drastically. But unfortunately, instead of our people asking for these to happen, we are busy asking the govt that is poor to run these govt established business as though it had the money to so. Another way to increase the revenue accuruable to the FG is implementation of resource control Presently the total revenue in the coffers of the FG is about $80b, States and LGs get 55% or about $44b, balance is $38b Recurrent expenditures is about 60% of $38b or $23b $15b is left for capital expenditure. If resource control is implemented with 83% tax even Six ND states generate about $80b and pay 87% tax to FG or $70b Lets assume the other six zone generate revenues and pay tax to the FG, based on education level and resources available ND=$70b SW=$140b SE= $70b NW=$20b NC=$35b NE=$20b Total accuruable to FG annual should be $355b. But instead of fighting for resource control and how components of the contry can become productive contributors we are all fighting to control the presidency and by extension, the nigerdelta oil 3 Likes |

iamdsam: Looking at the way our politicians are gearing up for the 2015 elections even though we still got two years to go has forced me to raise this topic. Though president Goodluck Jonathan hasn't publicly stated that he's going to contest come 2015 election, we've noticed and seen some backstage attempts been made by President Goodluck Jonathan which portrays his interest in contesting for the election. Nairaland as a forum which is made up of viable youths of our dear country are surely gonna participate in the election come 2015. I like us to do a little review of what Goodluck Jonathan has done in Nigeria since he assumed office after Yaradua's death. Would you vote for Goodluck Jonathan come 2015 if he contests? If you would, give reasons why and if you would not, also give your reasons. As for me though, I won't vote for him. He hasn't been able to rule up to expectations. Let's get this going Could you list your expectations? I wold like to know, because some people have unrealistic expectations, some due to genuine ignorance others really know what is achievable within a 2 year period, but out of sheer evil decide to deceive the rest because they cannot understand how a south south minority man would be ruling over them. There are also others who have been groomed to believe that someone else should be responsible for providing a subsidized existence for them, someone should pay for their fuel, food, transport, health, education, housing etc, because the govt pot of money is a bottomless pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. There is not easy way to solve Nigeria's problems apart from facing them head on, I remember through out the 8 years of obj, it was continuous fuel scarcity, it took the strong will of GEj, to burst through the subsidy budget limitations to ensure there was constant flow at he pumps, and then he told everyone the truth that the subsidy had to go, because it is nobodies right to be subsidized. gEJ is a many that is thoughtful, thinks long term and does not rush into decisions. There is a world of difference between carrying out populist actions and slowly finding out actions that would provide a sustenance basis for the Nigerian entrepreneur to build the middle class. In this regards GEJ has initiated 2 out of the four things required to build he middle class. 1- full speed deregulation of the power sector, I don't need to throw so much light on this. 2- full deregulation of the downstream petroleum sector, this should enable a proliferation of refineries and petrol chemical plants across the length and breath of the country. The other two might not be easily achievable due to the laziness and dependence of the SW and North of crude oil of the 9ja delta. The fear that these two will be initiated is the real reason for the opposition to the GEJ administration by the the SW and the core north, NE & NW. 3- implementation of true federalism where each component of the country wold contribute a portion of their internally generated wealth to he running of the FG, business and individuals pay taxes to lgas, LGA pay taxes to states, states pay taxes to FG. This should kill the current unproductivity in this country. 4- remove government from the business of going into businesses at all levels, sports, education, oil industry, steel plants, health etc. concentrate governments on creating conducive environment for business to run profitably and safely through policy making and regulation. 9 Likes |

bloggernaija: Tens of million in the Niger delta? After all I have said on this forum, people like you still carry on as though the purpose of being educated is to show off to your neighbors. Again, for the umpteen time, the purpose of education is to help you develop yourself and environment, After all the oil money spent on educating folks from the SW, how has the acquired education rubbed off on the rest of nigeria, or even the SW. Especially when one can't tell the difference between a town in Ogun state and one from Jigawa? Especially when no manufacturing, industrial initiatives are coming of from the SW Especially when all SW state are still heavily dependent of oil resources of the illiterate 9ja delta Especially when all you can show as a mark of advancement is a city(lagos) which benefited immensely from being a federal capital. With all your education, you have stooped low to collect from the uneducated, instead of leading a technological, industrial revolution that would start from the SW and gradually spread to the rest of the country, you sit down lazily, collect the headquarters of the oil companies, collect the jobs in the oil companies, collect monthly allocation for your states from the uneducated mans oil, collect the contracts in the oil companies, collect funding for the free education from his oil and then turn around to laf at him and call him an illiterate. @OP, It's clear u never understood the struggle, if you did, you wouldn't stop to allow the distractions coming from the SW media to interfere with your original desires. To be clear on what we are fighting for, we are demanding resource control and not increased revenue to state governors. these are two totally different things. What has happened is increased revenue to state governors, settling of some boys and mis-direction/mis-information and propaganda by the SW media. They are two distinct ways of life, that do not meet each other, when someone uses is hands to earn a living from the resources at his disposal and when we expect a govt, lga chairman to redistribute wealth that was given to from Abuja. You had better know what you are fighting for else you will would continue to be easily deceived by those only interest is your God given resources but pretend to love you. |

U r the one missing the point, while I am aware that few militants have made money from the 9ja delta struggle, my point is, the struggle must still continue. My aim here is to point out the real intentions of those who keep bringing the rich militants to our attention, For ignorant ones, it may seam they are trying to help the 9ja deltans, but in truth, their aim is to damping the moral of those who insist on fighting on. Day in Day out we are subjected to a media blitz on how Tompolo had made money by these people, if these people claim to love the9ja deltans so much, then they can channel one tenth on their energies to a media blitz on resource control, stoping the laziness inducing payments called resource sharing. You forget that it is the prevailed structure that allows few people to illegally enrich themselves at the expense of the majority, lets turn the structure around and put a structure in place to ensure that hardwork and ingenuity create wealth for people. |

Where is the airport in Niger delta that he can lands or take off with it? And some of u are applauding him on it. Common sense isn't actually common. if only u can appreciate the issue facing the country...there seams to be a deluded thinking that GOVT of this country has a bottomless pit of unending money..and the problem with spending it is corruption... i take a very different view, i.e the govt has very limited resources and has to seriously priotise activities it can carry out. The limited resources contraint is further amplified by d fact that d country is running a systm that encourages laziness and corruption. Very little will be achieved is such a system depending on central sharing instead of component productivity. in a.different time or environment, i woildnt have minded the critisizm of tompolos jet, but when it is driven by selfish motive to have their hands on oil belonging to others. then we have to agree that there is more to such topics than meet the eye 4 Likes |

The truth is, Tompolo may or may not have made his money in the best way possible, like Jesus once said, let him without sin cast he first stone. Looking across the terrain of the country, I can beat my chest to say that 98% of billionaires in this country can attribute their wealth to oil from the 9ja delta...and majority of them are because they were close affiliates to the military boys who controlled power through the gun... So to a newbie to this topic or someone ignorant of the real issues, why is there so much emphasis on the ND militants who have made money? The fear of the 9ja deltan insisting on the resource control fight and the over dependence on oil by the SW and the Core north, The SW press have realized that by constantly focusing attention on the rich militants, the propaganda will be strong enuf to destroy the desire of the average 9ja deltan to fight for true resource control, the strategy is simple, play up the negative aspects of the struggle in the media and play down any positives... I saw somewhere that if you keep telling a big lie long enuf, it seams to become true, even to the person or people being lied against. Like I have always said, and keep saying, education is a means to an end, the end being a developed society, it isn't Enuf to laf at the 9ja deltans that they are not educated, it would also be nice for this country to begin to benefit from the much touted well educated resources of the SW. If put to proper use, can generate much more money that oil, which is presently driving the media in the SW crazy with tompolos money. fact: Israel with no oil or natural resource and a population of 6mllion people, generates about $100b in revenues, same as nigeria with a population of 150 million. The population of the SW maybe at least 35million can definitely do better than over reliance on 9ja delta oil, and who and who in the 9ja delta is buing planes or not. 3 Likes |

jp philips: Ol boy, wetin be ur own self? I am honestly not understanding ur very smart logic..let break it down mathematically Lets use assumed figures 1-cost of producing a barrel of crude=$25 2-international cost of a barrel of crude=$100 3-cost of transporting a barrel of crude to Europe for instance=$2 4-cost of transporting a barrel of crude locally=$1 5-cost of refining a barrel of crude=$5 For the importer without subsidy payment, plus import duties, plus punitive protection tax, we have $100+(2x$2)+$1+$5 or $110 Hence the landing cost for an importer on a barrel of oil equivalent would be $110, this could go up much further if he government decides to apply protection tax for local refineries and import duties For the local refiner/producer, his cost should be $100+$1+$5 or $106, Hence the local producers output of crude should be cheaper, Please kindly add other factors that I missed, so I can understand you properly. |

My guess is that Dangote is already positioning himself for the full deregulation of the petroleum downstream sector, which must happen any way, when that happens, Petroleum product importers will not be entitled to any payments from government, they will have to compete against the likes of Dangote and orient refineries, and probably the existing refineries which would have been privatized. On the long run, it should be better to refine locally, ultimately the main goal should be movement away from exporting raw crude...just imagin 10 such refineries operating in the country, the possibilities, fresh air man, fresh air....
