Politics / Re: Every State In Nigeria Should Be Thankful To The Oil Producing States/community by DaLover(m): 10:13pm On Jun 16, 2013
iwanchop: I think we should rather be thankful to God and not any state or community. The oil producing states/communities did nothing to put the oil in there.
That oil is the mainstay of the Nigerian economy is not because the oil producing states want it so,it is because of what the constitution says.says.If the constitution had given the sole ownership of crude oil to oil producing communities and they in turn ,out of goodwill give same to all other states, then I would have said they deserve all commendation. The only reason I empathise with those communities is the fact that our government has not done much for them,so many of them have ni means of livelihood because oil has done harm to their lands and waters.

Nigeria should be richer than how we are now if previous and present governments properly utilise the numerous mineral resources we are blessed with, the over dependence on crude oil is doing more harm to us than good.

Prior to 1957 when oil was first discovered in Oloibiri,Nigeria could not be said to be a poor nation,we were doing very well from proceeds gotten from agriculture.

Stop first! You should indeed be thankfull that the oil producing states peacefully allowed the rest of nigeria to exploit resources and share it based on population for all those years, just imagine if the oil was located in SW or NW, forget it!
This country would have split long ago

Politics / Re: Press Release: No Nigeria Governors' Forum (NGF) Meeting For Monday- Amaechi by DaLover(m): 9:48pm On Jun 16, 2013
Frank-C:
Amaechi and his followers are being funny. Since after the 'elections' why has he not convoked a meeting of his followers? Jang has done that a number of times. Even the NEC meeting he is clinging to on Monday was convoked by the Presidency. What is he afraid of? He should go ahead and convoke meetings as the 'authentic NGF governor' and not be worried by Jang.

One thing is clear here, NGF can never be the same again in this dispensation. Their unity is cracked and even that of the northern governors is destroyed, all because Amaechi want to lead his mates against the wishes of his party hierarchy and other power blocs. The worst case scenario is for Jang faction to rename their union and the split lingers, and that inherently destroyed NGF. And by the way, which serious group retains a rogue operative as a leader? A man suspended by his party leading the opposition governors is what it is- opposition governors forum.

And for the noisy lots up there letting out empty emotions, this case has been decided. Invest your emotions in more important things. Mbeki lost SA presidency when he lost the support of his party. Same thing happens everywhere. You can't stand against the sentiments of your political party and leaders and expect to have a smooth sail. Anyway, i don't expect you guys to relax. Noise is in your DNA. You shouted more during Silva's saga.

So we can't even trust a 'single' public official? Not even one? A corrupt deal that started during the Abacha regime is being taken to a crazy level by an administration that is supposed to bring 'fresh air'. Come on guys! How does one explain the AGF acting as negotiator/Mr. Etete's personal Lawyer in this deal. This is so so so so wrong.

Nigerian is just a mirage, there is no country; no structure, no accountability, no nothing... Nigeria as we know it, is just a system that allows those that find themselves in the corridors of power to loot as much as they can.

In fact, I give up on this country, I GIVE UP!
What were u expecting? GEJ solved a thorny issue, instead of praising him u r saying otherwise, why didn't obj arrest Etete?

Find Out!:

Dan Etete is the very greedy one , even Shell regarded him as "an impossible person to deal with". Its that greed that has exposed the kasala for all to see now.

But then, we now have our own Attorney general who ordinarily should order the investigation of Malabu oil/Etete, being a part of the negotiating team. That's nonsense. Of course he wasn't doing it for free, and thats why GEJ may likely also be involved. In sane countries, Etete would spend several years in jail. Can you imagine this comic excuse:

grin cry
This statement seams ok when looked at from a narrow perspective, but considered holistically, why should GEJ single out Dan Etete for prosecution, during the almost 40 years of military rule, govt officials allocated oil blocks to themselves, remember how Danjuma made is first billions,

Instead of singling out Dan Etete, it may be better to cancel all oil deals that were done by he military, but imagine the confusion and legal issues that would set in, plus the pressure from inside and outside the country by those who would loose.
The best option when looked at holistically is o ensure that the field is producing as embarking on any drive to correct long past cases will be expensive and painful.

1. Yaradua signed this infrastructure agreement with GE and this project in calabar transpired became of that agreement and it has nothing to do with GEJ.

2. Good example, OBJ awarded many energy contracts with GE to build 18 turbines for different power stations in Nigeria, but sambo commissioned the one in sapele, so who gets the credit? Sambo or OBJ.

I know you people are grasping for anything to attache to this incompetent man called Gej whose best vision remains the cassava bread idea he stole from OBJ, but it won't work. The man is a born dullard. He's been in politics for a king time and he was once a governor , but even as a governor, he did not build one single hen gave, he left no ideas or vision for bayelsa and the cronies he left in charge are just incompetent clowns and.comedians and their best achievement to date is trying to catch rumor mongers.....

You are.free to tie yourself to his Halloween costume, but you can't and shouldn't expect others to do same.
There are two options to choose, eko lie and his Lappy crew or GE who is bringing their $250 m into the country run by GEJ, whose verdict should I choose from?
One of the complaints held against the Nigerian system by international investors was the lack of continuity by governance, here we have government who is see through plans initiated by his successors and you don't think it's commendable?

Lets assume that GEJ is running down this country as you have us believe, do you think that GE would still bring their $250m to nigeria because they signed an agreement with OBJ in 1900 ? For our information the environment GEJ has created is responsible for foreign investors coming into all or any parts of the country including Lagos.

Afam, Afam, Afam

Will you take the time to understand before rushing to comment. There is a difference between a guy who moves to Lagos to work in his brother's shop and a Chinese individual who works for a Chinese construction company that is constructing a bridge in Kano. If the Chinese company moves the worker from Kano to Luanda, the worker is called a migrant worker. If the worker leaves his employer and moves to Dangote, then he becomes an immigrant.

Ejike is currently in Lithuania, he has been in Spain, Ukraine, Iran, Poland, etc. He is not an immigrant. He is a migrant worker. Because Ejike has moved around so much, we can't tell when and where he will settle. Quite different from Hakeem who we know to be an immigrant. There is a difference between immigrant and migrant. You will soon start paying for the education I am dispensing to you and DaLover.

Politics / Re: Ojukwu Was Right Afterall by DaLover(m): 6:31pm On Jun 16, 2013

Do you guys know the meaning of the terms migration and globalization. Migration of individuals and groups is predicated by a desire for the groups or individuals survival. Globalization is simply a corporation expanding into other countries to buy and sell goods and services. Migration is absent of corporate directives. How many Chinese do you find in Nigeria that traveled of their own desires to find work? Most Chinese nationals in Nigeria are company sponsored even if their subsistence is wretched. Nigeria is better than Lebanon because there is positive migration from Lebanon to Nigeria.

Globalization is Citibank opening offices in Shanghai, London, Mumbai, Madrid, etc. and sending its employees to work in those offices. Migration is Afam leaving his village in Alaigbo to work in his brother's shop in Alaba. Migration is also Afam learning the American Anthem so that he can impress the consular officer who may give him a visitors Visa to the US but unbeknownst to the officer, Afam will stay put in the US for life. Chinese workers for chinese corporations are all over Africa and Latin America. Some of the Chinese corporations move their employees from country to country building infrastructure. That can never be termed as migration.

Your examples of NBA players and colleges have nothing to do with migration.

Ok, it's very clear now...I now understand why Dutch people migrated globalised from holland to South Africa in the 1900's even though SA was a barren and undeveloped land..one thing I don't understand though, which company globalised so many Dutch people?
Also in midevil Europe, during the period Columbus discovered America, so many Spanish people globalised to places Spain was far better than...
I like this new globalised word brought into the argument, it makes everything so easy to understand

^^ My exact question!

That aside, a lot of Nigerians in Nigeria are still illiterates even though they pretend to have attended university. How does GE hire the type of engineers that have kept them going for years? Local catchment area? Or is it the one thugs and criminals in different communities force foreign companies to hire their intellectually lazy citizens? Well they will for low level unskilled labour, however not for high paying skilled jobs. Most of their products, research and design engineers have and will be done outside Nigeria - no locals for that type of job. The skilled jobs which requires good education and experience if sourced from Nigeria will most likely come from Lagos, Ogun, Ibadan, states with manufacturing companies for years, PH for energy related experience requirements. For skilled positions where they'd still pay significantly, provide training and let recruits gain experience, but need raw intelligence, superior academic achievements, demonstrated leadership and communication capabilities, they will turn to recent and fresh engineering graduates with First Class and 2.1's (80%+ or 4.0+) from the best universities in Nigeria. Where are these universities? The Great Ife Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, ABU, Unizik, Covenant, Uniben in somewhat that order. When I was an undergraduate, most foreign companies came to my school (Great Ife) yearly to interview students.

So to mediocre-thinkers who are already thinking of catchment area for GE, be ready to work low-end, unskilled labour for they do not need the class of people I highlighted for such jobs. Plus it is good for their PR, social responsibility, and far cheaper too.

The summary of your story is that only Yoruba people can run a company like GE, so they should have located I in Lagos, but since they located it in Calabar, the Yorubas will be imported from lagos, Ibadan , Ogun to run it because the locals are not intelligent enough abi?
YOu even listed schools in order or best to worst with Yoruba schools being the best!

For a people so brilliant, I keep wondering why no major world breaking scientific achievement comes out from that area, well maybe it's because I don't read enough news after all I come from the area of unintelligent people.

After the civil war when, Lebanese and British interest we privatized, the Igbos and Nigerdeltans were recovering from the war, Awolowo and the SW snapped up shares in these companies, now many years later, these company heads, who probably attended schools in the SW now go back to recruit from their schools in the SW and you consider that a sign of greater intelligence.

I honestly thought his attitude of some Yoruba people that they are more intelligent Han orders had been eradicated on Nairaland, but it seems more work needs to be done!

Everything from yoruba newspapers to bloggers to politicians and speakers are vehemently against GEJ, why?

You can say 'incompetence' but Yar' Adua didn't get this level of venom from that region and he spent his entire presidency in a hospital bed. The North it's self isn't this vocally anti-GEJ. Anything GEJ says they're willing to accept the opposite without question, even amnesty for Boko Haram which Boko Haram specifically said they don't want.

Katsumoto:

There is a lot wrong with a unitary system of government. For one, Nigeria is too large a country both in size and in number of ethnic groups to have a centralized system of government. If one looks at progress since 1966, even an unintelligent observer would conclude that Nigeria has made no progress under a unitary system of government. Advocating that unitary system of government is ok because one particular group wants to exploit opportunities elsewhere is plain selfish.

It matters who wanted a unitary system of government because you can’t force something on others and then turn around and complain when someone else has the power to use that thing against you. Justice, fairness, and karma dictate that you swallow your pill like a man. Like I stated in my previous post it is moronic to suggest that people who are comfortable in their environment should move around just because you want to. That’s not how the world works. Many poles want to move to Germany, should Poles be telling Germans that there are opportunities in Poland? To the Igbo man who leaves Owerri to go and make his millions in Zamfara, yes Zamfara is better because he didn’t have the opportunity he found in Zamfara in Owerri.

You keep sounding like you have a problem with logic – what subsidies exist in the North and SW that don’t exist in the SE? How you chaps arrive at the SE being ahead of other regions amazes me. Net migration from the SE to other regions is positive. That means more people leave the SE than migrate to it. Why would a man risk his life crossing the Sahara desert to reach Europe or stay in Maiduguri, Kano where people are being killed regularly if not because of economic opportunities? Would it make sense for a German to cross Europe and the Mediterranean Sea to get to Syria? The reality on ground implies different to whatever is being manufactured by some incompetent civil servant in Abuja.
It is obvious some of you manufacture these feel good factors to compensate for other things.

As usual your argument keeps being narrow, you may or may not have been to eastern Nigeria to see things for yourself, but you theory of migration patterns is not at all comprehensive, I won't talk much on that issue again, but it it left for you to decide if the differences between north and SE or SW and SE are the same as Mexico and USA, or Germany and Poland..or if we just have a set of more adventurous people....
I know deep down you know the real truth, weather you admit it, is another thing entirely.

Again, I have not said that unitary system of government is the best for nigeria, read my post again, I said its ok where people are not limited by tribal sensibilities, and nigeria isn't sure a place...hence the original desire which was based on their competitive and adventurous nature was wrong and that is why Ojukwu reverted to a demand for confederation....

You have to be more analytical in your view of issues using facts, I have presented facts to show that 1966 was not the first time Nigerians started becoming suspicious and fearful of igbo domination and how everything lead to Ojukwu asking for a confederation.

Do u agree with me that the unitary system of government in place since 1966 has been used to hold down the SE?

There are clear differences between what the Igbos wanted before the civil war and how the SW and core north have run this country post civil war. So your statement that the Igbos were the first to ask for unitary govt and hence should not complain is at best delusional.
Prior to independence and the civil war, the Igbos advocated for a more united nigeria where everyone can move freely and benefit maximally in the country, one country, not Mexico vs USA or Poland vs Germany,
Since 1966, the core north and SW have nationalized assets, stifled individual competitiveness, encourages parasitic dependence on federal government, made laws against private participation in business core to the economy, created in economic non viable states, instituted a culture of revenue sharing as against revenue generation etc...

I naturally expect you to agree with me that the situation since 1966 has actually not set the nation in the right path, but the key thing is do you understand why the principal actors have configured the country as such?

Katsumoto:

You are the one that doesn’t understand his own point. You argued that the Igbos pushed for regionalism because ‘tribal sensibilities of the country didn’t permit their travels’. And I countered that you ignored certain facts. First, it was the Igbos who gave Nigeria a central government. Second, the desire for regionalismwas born out of the loss of political power to the Northerners and not out of some wretched foresightedness by Ojukwu or anyone else. By some cruel irony, Ojukwu himself proclaimed his love for unitary government.

You guys use your half-baked and incomplete education to pursue your debates rather assiduously. Who told you that the people who created the opportunities didn’t make use of them? Yes Ojukwu senior was a wealthy man but before him were Akinola Dawodu, JH Doherty, 2 generations of Vaughns, 2 generations of Georges, the Odutola Brothers, Salami Agbaje, Adebisi Giwa, Mohammed Shitta-Bey, Da Rocha, J Cole, etc. Or were all these folks from Alaigbo? As for your point about military men, see military high command as at January 1966 – Ironsi, Ademulegun, Adewale Wey, Maimalari, Ogundipe, Kur Mohammed, Shodeinde, Adebayo, Gowon, Fajuyi, Njoku, Korubu, Largema, Ojukwu, Pam, Unegbe, Imo.

Like I said, people move for economic and social reasons. There are opportunities in Mexico, why aren’t Americans moving to Mexico? Because the economic and social conditions present in the US are sufficient for them. You don’t need to tell people to them, the laws of social sciences and economics provide for that. Doesn’t it sound moronic when an immigrant moves to a place to take advantage of opportunities there and then tells those he meets there that there are opportunities in the place he has migrated from and that if they are competitive, they should move there and try their luck? People who are satisfied do not move, simple.

I will repeat again in a different format, hopefully u will understand me this time....nothing is wrong with a unitary system of government if people can move freely amongst each other, settle and take advantages of the opportunities in those areas....if this is not the situation, like people moving at totally different paces, Igbos vs rest of Nigeria, then it is best to move for a confederation or loose federation...what is so complicated here...

In order words it doesn't matter who wanted unitary system first, what matters is what system works for the current situation on ground....
Let me give an example... Igbos wanted unitary system for free enterprise, industry, business competition etc....but this is not stop the Yoruba man from competitions in Kano or Enugu for instance...an Igbo man leaves Owerri, migrates to Zamfara and makes his millions...is Zamfara better in any way than Owerri or IMO?
Compare his with what the Core north and the SW have done with the same unitary government since 1966, Nationalized all key sectors of the economy, stifled growth and competition, now SW and core north are hooked on free stuff as in the case of subsidy, the SE with the least government presence is ahead of many other regions.

On merit, hardwork and temerity, the Igbos produce fine officers for the British military, many northerners started to emerge when the British tried to please the north...read your history very well

It is something you would vehemently want to deny but when you strip the meat from the bones, the real reason why nigeria is where we are today is because we have configured our structure to promote laziness, and this is because the fear of the Igbo
