Applications are currently ongoing for the 2016 University of Birmingham/UKEAS Nigeria Outstanding Achievement Scholarships for Nigerian students who wish to study in the UK. The University of Birmingham is pleased to announce the award of 4 scholarships of £5000 for Nigerian students applying for entry to an undergraduate programme at the University starting September 2016. These are joint awards with the University’s local representatives UKEAS, and will be awarded to high performing students starting their University of Birmingham programme this year. The student must be entering the first year of an undergraduate programme based at Birmingham. - Have met the academic conditions of their offer to the programme. - Be classed as Nigeria domiciled and a Nigerian national. - Be classed by the University as an overseas fee payer for tuition fee payment. Should be able to fund the remaining costs of their studies at Birmingham from other sources. - Start their studies at the University in September 2016, the scholarship award may not be deferred. Be registered with, and have their undergraduate study application attached to, one of our local representatives (as listed above). Reports has it that the cleric was alleged to have been sleeping with the wife of one Austin who is the President General of Idjerhe Clan Development Union, ICDU. It was alleged that he was doing this under the guise of rendering special prayers for her. A mentally unstable woman living inside the bush at Effiakuma in Takoradi area of Ghana gave birth to a baby girl. According to Peace fm online ,residents spotted the 42-year-old woman taking care of her newborn baby in the bush where she is said to have been living for over 4 years. According to residents , this is the second time the lady will give birth in the bush. Her relatives usually come for the baby. Onlookers took the baby from her to a nearby hospital for medical attention. An Osun State High Court sitting in Ilesa has sentenced a septuagenarian, Chief Moses Adeniyi, to seven years imprisonment for raping two teenage pupils.Adeniyi, who is the Loja, Araromi Otokobo was arraigned in court on Mach 28 2011 was charged with rape and indecent assault. The prosecution team from the Ministry of Justice: Tijani Adekilekun, who appeared along with Folasade Adekomi told the court that the convict offered a free ride to the girls, who were coming back from school and he drove them to his hotel where he raped the two teenagers one after the other. The statement explained further that Adeniyi, who was a former neighbour of the victims raped the two girls aged 13 and 14 who are pupils of St.Margaret Girls School Ilesa in May 2010. Instead of taking them to their destination, Adeniyi was said to have taken them to his hotel and took them inside one of the hotel rooms where he raped them and warned them not to shout or tell anybody about it. After defiling them, he was said to have wiped their private parts with a piece of white cloth and warned them against telling anyone what happened to them. He was said to have threatened them that anyone who disclosed his action would die. But one of the parents of the victims was sad to have been told that her daughter was given a free ride by a man and she went to inquire from the school who the man was. The girls were said to be afraid but refused to disclose what Adeniyi did to them for fear of death. A 26-year-old conductor, Chineyen Okoro, has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly abducting three factory workers in the Sango area of the state.The suspect was arrested along with his roommate, 16-year-old Kalu. PUNCH learnt that the workers were returning from their workplace around 9.30pm on Tuesday when Okoro, who had a gun, and his gang members, ambushed them in the Ntabo, Ogba Ayo area and led them to an uncompleted building. The Anambra-born suspect and his gang members, who were at large, were said to have dispossessed the workers of their valuables. A victim, 24-year-old Ibrahim Oladeji, said he took courage and challenged Okoro after the two victims (ladies) managed to escape from the scene. Oladeji said, “He (Okoro) and his gang members stopped us around Ogba Ayo while we were returning from Sango. He pointed a gun at us and we were forced into an uncompleted building. They ordered us to lie down and collected our phones and wallets. I had about N15,000 in my wallet. He gave the items to one of his gang members and told him to run away. “One of the two ladies among us managed to escape. I told the other lady, Moji, to also run. I summoned courage and challenged him. I punched him in the face and he hit me with the gun. He then fled.“I chased him into a corner where a man, who heard me shouting ‘thief, thief’ apprehended him. The police later came to arrest him.” Moji, 18, told PUNCH that her wallet contained a sum of N1,500 and a mobile phone. Our correspondent learnt that Okoro had claimed to be a visitor to the area and was getting fresh air when a mob descended on him. However, he later confessed to have used the gun in self-defence when he heard people shouting thief. He said, “I was sitting outside when I saw people rushing towards my direction and calling me a thief. I picked the gun and shot it to disperse the crowd. But I was eventually arrested and beaten up. I did not rob anybody. “I inherited the gun from a friend six years ago after he was killed. We were both Aiye Confraternity members. I denounced the group after his death.” The other suspect, Kalu, who hails from Imo State, denied involvement in the robbery. He said, “Chineye(Okoro), his brother and I live in a room. Chineye went outside with a bag after we had finished cooking that evening. I don’t know whether there was a gun inside the bag or not. “The following day after his brother had left for work, some policemen came and arrested me. Parents of the students of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD), standing trial over their alleged involvement in last Sunday night protest which led to the destruction of property worth millions of naira and looting in the university, have pleaded with the university to temper justice with mercy. The sober parents appealed to the ABUAD founder, Aare Afe Babalola, to assist them by withdrawing the matter involving their children and wards from court and treat it administratively in the university. A statement from ABUAD head of corporate communication, Tunde Olofintila, at the weekend said the parents who paid a visit to the institution to assess the level of physical damage, spoke at the Owolabi Hall, where they expressed readiness to render financial and other forms of assistance in respect of the damaged facilities in addition to collectively writing a letter of apology to the police and the state Ministry of Justice. An Ado Ekiti Chief Magistrate Court had last week remanded in prison custody 19 students of the university believed to have been actively involved in the violence and wanton destruction. Babalola, while responding to the plea of the parents, said upon receipt of the parents’ letter admitting the commission of the crime and apologising to the university, copies of which must be sent to the Ekiti State Ministry of Justice and the Inspector General of Police, the university would see what it could do to ensure that the children did not end up in jail. The ABUAD founder said: “Cases of brazen arson, burglary and stealing are entirely criminal. The Supreme Court had decided that the university has no power to entertain or try students who commit criminal offence such as burglary, arson, stealing, attempted murder, etc. “I set up this university to change the lives of your children and make them better than I am. We will try to see what we can do to make all parties happy,” he said, adding that the university would await the letter of apology from the parents and then decide on the next line of action. Vice president of the university’s Parents/ Teachers Consultative Forum, PTCF, Professor Olusegun Oladimeji and Mr. Niyi Ogungbuji, who spoke on behalf of the affected parents, said they were in the university to condemn what the students had done and plead with the founder and management to temper justice with mercy. There are also several powerful people who could spoil all Buhari’s efforts by their controversial activities in different parts of Nigeria. The Federal Republic of Nigeria, as it is known today, has never really been one homogeneous country, for its widely differing peoples and tribes. At independence Nigeria became a federation and remains the one country. Soon afterwards the battle to consolidate the legacy of political and military dominance of a section of Nigeria over the rest of the federation began with bigger passion. More than 45 years ago Nigeria was nearly divided by the bloody civil war that broke out on July 6, 1967, and led to the deaths of over a million people. Below are the five people who are fighting for the soul of Nigeria with the central government at the expense of millions of residents who just want an opportunity to live their lives quietly. 5. President Buhari Buhari makes the list only because he is the leader of the nation and his actions or inactions could push Nigeria over the edge or become the messiah, as many predicted, and save the country from the imminent disaster posed by the people mentioned below. The president’s manner of tackling the controversial prisoners of Nigeria could go a long way to define if the situation would be worsened or buried and forgotten. However, if Buhari wants to keep Nigeria united he should ensure that the rights of these men are protected while also figuring out the ways on how to stop the conflicts in the country. For example, Nnamdi Kanu is both Nigerian and British, and the UK has already rose questions over his continual detention. Sheikh El-Zakzaky has Iran’s support because he preaches their type of religion, the Shia Islam. 4. Tompolo (Government Ekpemupolo) Tompolo was a prominent figurehead in the Niger Delta militancy that besieged the oil-producing country in the mid-2000s. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is currently accusing Tompolo of corruption. The arrest warrant for the former Niger Delta warlord coincided with the resumption of attacks in the region. Armed with more money than ever to purchase even more weapons than before, Tompolo could pose a real danger to Nigeria quickly should the situation deteriorate any further in the South South. Before the Niger Delta Amnesty Programme, his name drove fear into the hearts of many as he and his cohorts terrorized the creeks of the South South region. 3. Goodluck Jonathan Ex-president Goodluck Jonathan has left the power as the national hero. He is currently getting many awards from the global community, recall his recognition in the USA and in Switzerland last month. Jonathan has been visiting many strategic pro-democracy institutions where he had been invited to share his experience in office as the promoter of democracy and the advocate of good governance in Africa. However, his government left many questions unanswered. For instance, the biggest scandal that currently rocks the country is fake purchase of the armsto fight the deadly Boko Haram sect. The further anti-graft agency digs into the scam, the more Jonathan’s men are implicated and indicted. These fake deals reportedly caused thousands of deaths in the country in the hands of terrorists. What Jonathan decides to do next – to stay the hero or to reclaim the power by all means – will determine his role in the unity of Nigeria. 2. Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, is another powerful man with his finger practically on the activation button. Shiites’ leader was the one who introduced the Shia Muslim practice into Nigeria from Iran over 30 years ago. Before then, Nigeria had only Sunni Muslims. He controls a part of the Muslim population in the north and is so powerful that his religious procession or convoy has right of way above anyone. He could not even be controlled by law enforcement agencies. Residents of Kaduna state, where El-Zakzaky used to be based, has many times lamented about the disturbances the sheikh and the members of his sect cause. While at the moment, his location remains unknown after a bloody clash with the military in Zaria on December 12-13, which left hundreds dead his followers wait for his return patiently. 1. Nnamdi Kanu Of all the people on this list, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) group and the director of the Radio Biafra pirate radio station, Nnamdi Kanu, is, perhaps, the most influential at the moment. Nigeria’s secret police arrested Kanu, on October 17. He lives in London but often travels to Nigeria and was reportedly apprehended in Lagos. Kanu leads the IPOB, a secessionist group supporting the revival of the Biafran state and independence from Nigeria. Since his arrest, pro-Biafran protesters have organised marches in southeastern Nigeria, demanding Kanu’s release and calling for the independence of the Biafran territories. Kanu is calling for the people of the South East to mobilize and fight for the creation of the state of Biafra. He argues that the Igbos are not properly catered for by the federal government. Mrs. Agbedeyi claimed she had been deprived of the NYSC certificate for wearing a skirt to sign her monthly clearance. The hearing of the case is scheduled for February 22, 2016. A devoted Christian says she does not feel comfortable wearing the NYSC uniform trousers. She said: “Some Christians women strongly believe in Deut 22:5 saying: “The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the Lord thy God.” It is, therefore, our prayer for such women to be allowed to wear skirts.” However, the NYSC officials insisted on Rita Agbedeyi to stick to the uniform; her refusal resulted in the subsequent ceasing of her NYSC certificate. Mrs Agbedeyi believed it was an infringement of the fundamental human rights of all Christian women. The similar story happened almost three years ago in Ogun state. Reportedly, Tolulope Damilola Ekundayo, a female corps member, left the NYSC camp after she was forbidden to wear skirts by the camp officials. In the words of T.I Anosike, the Ogun state NYSC coordinator, the girl decided to leave the camp herself; the officials only tried to make her keep to the guidelines, and there was no intention to expel her on their part. The story sparked different reactions among Nigerians.
