Prof. (Mrs) Olagunju Funke Iyabo is a lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Economics, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, LAUTECH. She had her BSc, MSc and PhD in Agricultural Economics.

Beautiful Prof. Olagunju Iyabo, born in 1971, lectures and supervises research work of university students from B.Sc. to Ph.D. levels, with passion to address issues relating towards enhancement of the quality of life of the rural farmers through gender sensitive poverty alleviation strategies, improvement of post – harvest processing as well as conscious awareness of good record keeping, access to loan and exploration of factors affecting market access to improve economic status of the poor rural household, for self – sufficiency with consequence of reduction in poverty.

Her research largely focused on the area of Agricultural Finance using Agribusiness, Cooperatives and Marketing activities to address poverty problems of rural community through improved farm productivity for financial empowerment. This was accomplished through her research work in production economics, agribusiness and finance as well as environmental resource economics.

Prof. Olagunju is a post-Doctoral fellow of highly competitive and prestigious African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) in 2013 and had a fellow mentee in 2014.

The 45-year-old elegant lecturer is very passionate and concerned towards achieving self- sufficiency with consequence of reducing poverty among the smallholder farmers, especially women.

She had physically demonstrated and trained female farmers on adding value to harvested cassava which was turned to a sustainable improved income via good record keeping thereby combating poverty and food insecurity with potential enhancement in the livelihood of small holder farmers and their families at both rural and urban centers.

Prof Olagunju, has served as External Examiner for postgraduate studies at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, assessed senior lecturers for readership positions at Ekiti and Ebonyi states Universities.

Prof. Olagunju is a registered member of African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), Nairobi, Kenya, , Nigerian Association of Agricultural Economist (NAAE,) and so on. She won a research grant of African Economic research Consortium in 2011 and won LAUTECH Tetfund research grant in 2015. She has software skills in STATA, SPSS, R-STUDIO, EXCEL and a bonafide member of both international and national professional bodies.

Prof. (Mrs) Olagunju is a team worker, working in a viable group and has produced a good number of academic studies and has imparted the skill to a number of graduate students. The quality, quantity and breath of her publications exemplified the synergistic benefit of collaborative research in agricultural economics and such efforts were responsible for her multiple scientific papers. The wide scope of her publications is a convincing evidence of a fertile and imaginative mind. Most of her works have appeared in print in reputable local and international outlets. Consequently, her ideas have been disseminated to the scientific community, especially her peers in and outside the country.

In addition to her scholarly publications, she has supervised and taught many courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She is presently involved in supervision and teaching of both undergraduate and postgraduate students. She is very committed and responsible to carry out assignments given to her and have respect for time and dates in delivering them.

She won an international grant from African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), an NFP Short Course fellowship held at Wageningen University and competitively won a career-changing two-year African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) for her Post- doctoral Fellowship, as a result of her outstanding research for rural communities.

She belongs to several committees within and outside the university such as the Business Manager of International Journal of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development (IJAERD), member of Faculty of Farm Management and Internship committee, former chairperson of Internship committee and presently representing the dean of the faculty at the Board of Pre-Degree Science Program, LAUTECH.

The elegant female Lautech female Professor hails from Ijebu Isiwo, Ijebu Ode local government, Ogun State.

U lot might call me silly but as im writing these, have got nothing in my heart but pains. I thank God for never been there.

I'm tired of this life even though people around believe all is well with me.

I am a 21 year old undergraduate student. I should have graduated this year but have been facing a lot of challenges since my 100 Level days. I really tried my best but it's never enough, so that I can graduate. The trauma, depression, O God, after stressing myself reading day and night, preparing hard, just to discover that I had outstanding courses. I will now splash.

My parents are not happy with the look of things and not taking things easy and not in support of paying another Tuition. I don't have a choice than to just end since nothing can be done.

The pressure is just too much. I am the first male child of my parent. They are expecting good news not the splash news, not after supporting me for 5 years.

Woke up this morning and I ask myself, is life worth living.

This is the only thing I can do that will end my suffering and shame. BYE

Though they were young, they knew what it was like to be in love, felt it in their bones for each other. Their love was so simple because their feelings were so clear. I love you, you love me. That was all that mattered.

The whole community saw them as Josh and Viv, together. When she found out she was leaving not just the community but the country, she was heartbroken, her love would be faraway from her and they’ld pine for each other. She didn’t want that for either of them. To her, there was no other way. It had to be done, they had to say goodbye so he would be free to live his life and be happy. His happiness was all that mattered.

She had two weeks left with him and she was grateful. Anywhere he went, she was there. When he worked on site, she showed up on his break bearing food and laughter….and love. Those two weeks were the happiest days of her life. She quit her job at the bookshop and when he asked her why, with a smile she told him she wanted to focus more on her other goals, but he didn’t look convinced.

She was leaving and she didn’t want to spend another minute away from him.

On the last day, that night she came to him. They both knew things had been building up to that moment. They gave themselves to love, to each other. It was love like they’d never felt. A feverish affair, a mating of not just bodies but souls. They were made for each other but life had other plans only she knew about. When they were settled and snuggled as one, she told him just what life had in mind for them and like that, the fire died and everywhere became cold. He was angry, scared and a little betrayed. Was it all a joke?

Had she just been playing with him only to leave him shattered and in the dust? Had she come to him that night to offer herself to him as what? As sacrifice? He was angry and shouting, making the quiet night their witness to this heart wrenching moment. Then he told her to leave or they’ld both find out just how upset he was if she continued to stand there crying.

“Josh please, I’m sorry…I didn’t know what else to do. We’ve had two wonderful weeks, don’t let us end like this.” She pleaded, tears running down her face.

“You should have thought of that. Why didn’t you tell me? I would have….I would have done something….anything.” This helpless feeling was too much. In just a moment, his life had turned upside down.

What’ll happen to the house he’d started to build for her, the house that would be theirs when they got married. The house he’d planned to surprise her with. All their dreams gone. It was all just talk now.

“If I’d told you, what would you have done? I can’t leave my parents, I’m still seventeen. Their word is still the law.”

Just one more year, one frigging year and they were going to use it to take her away from him.

“Well now, we wouldn’t know what I’ld have done. You made that decision all by yourself!”

“I said I was sorry. I’m sorry.
Josh, I love you. Please don’t send me away. We still have until 2pm tomorrow, then I’ll leave by train. Please….I love you.”

Life was hard, heartbreak was harder. He looked away from her and watched the fire in the fireplace die slowly. He knew when she left, knew she’d dropped the golden locket her grandma had given her behind.

“Yea, I love you too” He said to the empty room.

It was a sunny day the next day and while the people moved about, living their lives, two hearts were broken, aching and weary. She cried as she completed her packing, he took out his helpless feeling on the job, pounding away at whatever needed pounding. When he couldn’t take it anymore, when he felt like he would break if he didn’t see her once more and make her going-away easier by being with her and showing her support, he left the site, ran as fast as his legs could go. He loved her, they loved each other. Things would work out. He was sorry for being a jerk, for not letting her know that no one would hold her place in his heart.

When he got to her house it was just 11am, he had time, thank God! But no one was there. He searched and asked the neighbours. He was given a letter and was directed to the train station.
No, no! It couldn’t be. She’d said 2pm. Wasn’t she even going to give him a chance to say goodbye?! Had she been hurting so bad?!

He raced there and saw only a speck of the train, it had left.

Oh no! No!

“I’m sorry!” He shouted,
“I love you!”

And he crumpled right there at the train station.

“I’m sorry.” His voice was a whisper. He opened the letter, read it and cried.

It read: I’ll always love you, be happy.

The Agbonjagwe Leemon lkpea Foundation (ALIF) annual scholarship for indigent students in Nigerian public secondary and tertiary institutions is now open for application. The award is in the following categories:

A.) Secondary School

B.) Polytechnics and/or Colleges of Education, and

C.) University undergraduates.

Eligibility Criteria

- Applicant must be indigent and exhibits brilliance in his or her academic pursuit.
- Applicant in category "A" must produce a letter of attestation from school principal alongside a copy of last term result.
- Applicant in categories "B" and "C" must be a registered students in any public tertiary institution in Nigeria i.e. Universities, Polytechnics or Colleges of Education.
- Applicants must have exemplary character and good academic performances.

Application Requirements

Each applicant shall submit an application letter, not more than two (foolscap) pages. The letter must include the name of the candidate, GSM contact, and name of school, state of origin and in the case of tertiary institutions; course of study, year of study, and why the candidate believes that he or she should be given the scholarship award.

- A photocopy of the candidate's current identity card.

Let me start by saying that there are terrible lies about starting a business. One of the dumbest lies is that business is for people who are illiterate. Jeeez! That’s pathetic. Another fat lie is that you need really huge amount of capitals. Another lie from the pit of……….ignorance!

Now, i want to debunk those lies by sharing this short stories of 5 Entrepreneurs in Africa Who Started a Successful Business with $100 or Less in hand. Guess what? They are smiling to the banks after just having started a few years ago.

Now let’s meet them…

1. Heshan de Silva (Kenya):

In 2007, Heshan de Silva dropped out of school and as things got worse for him in the US, he joined his parents back in Kenya to get his life back together.

Aged only 18 at the time, his parents gave him 10,000 Kenyan Shillings (US$116), which he used to start a new business. He targeted the bus travel sector in the country by selling insurance bundled with the bus ticket purchase. And it is widely reported in the media that by the end of the year, the business had made 90m Kenyan Shillings (US$1.05m). Isn’t that amazing!? Heshan has since invested that money in his new business, De Silva Group, a venture capital firm.

With an incomplete education, no capital, not even a great deal of life experience and yet Heshan made it in a short period of time. He was featured in CNN and Forbes Magazine as one of Africa’s most successful young.

2. Abasiama Idaresit (Nigeria):

Abasiama Idaresit graduated with an MBA at Manchester Business School and moved back to Nigeria in 2010 to start his own business. Today, he is the Founder and CEO of Wild Fusion, a digital marketing company.

Guess what? He started his company in 2010 with a gift of $250 from his mother and it took him 8 months to make the first deal. Just three years later, Visa, Vodafone, Samsung and Unilever as well as several large Pan-African corporations are his clients and his company is valued at over $6 million in revenue. Yes, you heard that indeed right; $6 million! And yes, he started in 2010. Wild Fusion has now become Google’s certified partner in Africa!

3. Axel Fourie (South Africa):

Take Axel Fourie from South Africa. By the time he was 27, he had tried unsuccessfully to set up several businesses. When his iPod was faulty and he was told by specialists that nothing could be done about it, he searched for a YouTube video online and learned how to fix the iPod himself!

He then put an advert into a local newspaper and offered to fix faulty iPhones and iPads. The response he got exceeded his expectations as he was flooded with calls and requests from potential customers. He knew he was onto something!

Axel opened his company iFix and started fixing iPods and iPhones from his university dorm. This was in 2007. Today, Alex runs a chain of 8 stores and employs 85 people. He has since expanded his business into manufacturing mobile phone accessories which he exports into 12 countries across Africa. Oh, we forgot to mention the amount of his starting capital. Here it is: Zero! (unless he paid a little for that newspaper ad).

4. Anna Phosa (South Africa):

Anna Phosa started her pig farm venture in 2004 in Soweto with about $100 in hand. She bought four pigs with that money after she was introduced to pig farming by a close friend.

A little less than four years later, in 2008, Anna was contracted by Pick ‘n Pay, the South African supermarket and retail giant to supply its stores with 10 pigs per week. This was a first breakthrough and the request by the retailer grew quickly to 20 pigs per week.

But the really amazing bit happened in 2010 when Anna signed a breathtaking contract with Pick ‘n Pay to supply 100 pigs over the next five years under a 25 million Rand deal – that’s nearly 2.5 million US Dollars!

She did not even have so much land or enough pigs! With a contract in hand, Anna received funding from ABSA Bank and USAID to buy a 350-hectare farm property.

Anna started with 4 pigs in 2004, today her farm employs about 20 staff rearing 4,000 pigs at a time. Her perseverance has made her a millionaire!

5. Jacky Goliath and Elton Jefthas (South Africa):

The venture ( De Fynne Nursery) started in 2001 by South African entrepreneurs, Jacky Goliath and Elton Jefthas, in Jeftah’s home backyard. Market demand grew fast and steadily which meant that they moved the nursery to a 0.5 hectare land in 2005, and in 2008 had to move again to a 1.5 hectare area outside Cape Town where they hosted 600,000 plants!

Today, the De Fynne nursery supplies its products to retailers such as Woolworths, Massmart and Spar in South Africa and it was reported that they since moved to a whopping 22-hectare commercial property. This is a simple start up idea on a shoe string budget anywhere in Africa where you have a booming housing & hotel sector and expanding city areas!

What are you waiting for? Will you allow your mum, dad, sister, brother, friend, enemy, the government, college degree or whatever to stop you? After reading this, do you still think that you need a million dollar to start that business? I don’t think so. While you’re not guaranteed success but you’ll never know if a business will succeed or fail when you start. Just start anyway.

State congresses of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun, Ekiti and Anambra states ended in confusion on Tuesday.

In Ogun State, three state party chairmen and other officers emerged after parallel congresses were held by factional groups at different venues in Abeokuta, the state capital.

One of our correspondents observed that three separate state congresses were conducted at different venues by the loyalists of the senator representing Ogun-East senatorial district, Buruji Kashamu; the member representing Remo constituency in the House of Representatives, Ladi Adebutu; and those of a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole.

The Kashamu-led group held its congress at the party secretariat, the Adebutu group held theirs inside the amphitheatre of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library while the Bankole group made use of the Ake Palace ground.

Chief Bayo Dayo emerged as the state chairman of the Kashamu group, the Adebutu faction elected a two-term member of the Ogun State House of Assembly and former chairman of Ifo Local Government Area, Sikirulahi Ogundele, as the party’s chairman in the state.

The Bankole faction, however, elected a former commissioner under the Governor Gbenga Daniel administration, Chief Wale Egunleti, as its own state chairman of the Ogun PDP.

The story was the same in Ekiti State where two parallel congresses of the party were held in Ado Ekiti, the state capital.

One of our correspondents observed that a faction opposed to Governor Ayodele Fayose held its state congress at the Omo-Ilu Foundation building in the Ajilosun area of Ado Ekiti.

The faction elected Chief Williams Ajayi as its chairman.

But as of the time of filing this report, a faction loyal to the governor was holding its own congresses at the Adetiloye Hall of the state-owned Fountain Hotel in Ado Ekiti.

The outgoing state Publicity Secretary, Jackson Adebayo, in an interview with our correspondent said the factional congress was illegal.

“We are still conducting our congress, so, I’m not aware of any other congress,” he said.

In Anambra State, the state congress of the Peoples Democratic Party on Tuesday ended in confusion.

The party held two parallel congresses. One was held at Emmaus House and another at Marble Arch Hotel, in Awka, the state capital.

Members of EMPD Drug Enforcement Unit on Tuesday, April 26, arrested a 30-year-old Nigerian national for possession of drugs at a block of flats at the intersection of Rietfontein Road and Second Street, in Boksburg North, South Africa.

According to EMPD spokesperson Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago: “On Tuesday, April 26, a block of flats in Boksburg North was staked out for a couple of hours by EMPD Drug Enforcement Unit members following receipt of information about a suspected drug-dealer,”

Kgasago said a man fitting the description appeared at around 11am, after the block of flats had been observed for about three hours.

“He was found in possession of drugs and was arrested.” Kgasago added that the drugs were confiscated. “A total of 38 ziplock bags of cat, worth R3000 on the streets, were found on the said person,”

The man was taken to the Boksburg North Police Station and charged with possession and suspected dealing in illicit substances. He is expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrates Court soon.
