Wema Bank Plc says it has launched a solar-powered mobile branch to make banking services available to everyone in all parts of the country.

Mr Damola Bolodeoku, the bank’s Head of eBusiness, in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos, said the mobile branch was fitted with two automated teller machines (ATM).

According to Bolodeoku, the mobile branch tagged: “Wema Bank on Wheels”, will bring convenient banking services to Nigerians at their door step in line with global best practices, using technology.

“We are taking banking services to Nigerians, no matter where they are.

“Being an environmentally-responsible company, our mobile branch is powered by solar energy – a first in the Nigeria’s banking industry.

“Banks around the world have often used mobile banking vehicles as a cost-effective service delivery channel as competition becomes stiffer.

“As such, every financial institution strives to provide their customers with the latest technology-driven services,” Bolodeoku said.

Kemi Aina, Head, Customer Service Management, said the recent closure of the bank’s branch in Abule Egba due to road construction fast-tracked the mobile services.

Aina stressed that “Wema Bank on Wheels’’ would help to reach Nigerians who missed out through “our internet banking and USSD banking services.”

The Nigeria Customs Service, Kano/Jigawa Area Command in the year 2016 collected and accounted for Eight Billion, Seven Hundred Million, Five Hundred and One Thousand, One Hundred and Sixteen Naira, Seventy Eight Kobo (₦ 8,700,501,116.78) as revenue into the coffers of the Federal Government of Nigeria in the face of economic recession.

In the same vein, the Command through its anti-smuggling unit intercepted 180 seizures of various contrabands with a duty paid value of Three Hundred and Fifty One Million, Six Hundred and Forty Thousand, One Hundred and Eighty Three Naira only (₦ 351,640, 183.00) making a cumulative of Nine Billion, Fifty Two Million, One Hundred and Forty One Thousand, Two Hundred and Ninety Nine Naira, Seventy Eight Kobo.

The seized goods included 1,944 jerry can of 25 litres vegetable oil, 6,958 bags of foreign parboiled rice, 1,619 bales of second hand clothing, among other items.

While commending the Officers and Men of the Command for living up to their statutory responsibilities in revenue collection, trade facilitation and suppression of smuggling towards sustaining international best practices, and standards, the Customs Area Controller, Kano/Jigawa Area Command, Comptroller Matthias Abutu attributed this feat to the Comptroller General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ibrahim Ali (Rtd) for his motivation and effort in providing the necessary logistics needed for successful implementation of Government policies within his areas of jurisdiction.

Comptroller Abutu added that despite the economic recession, his Command was able to generate this huge amount of money due to the commitment and diligence of his officers and men within the year under review. You will recall that import in 2016 was low because of the high exchange rate.

The Comptroller assured all legitimate traders within his areas of coverage not to exercise any fear as their legitimate trade will be facilitated in 2017 in order to have positive returns on their investment.

He added that the ban of importation of vehicles through the land borders is for the good of all Nigerians and as the Government has planned to rebuild and develop our automotive industry which will create huge employment opportunities for our unemployed graduates across the nation.

He however urged all traders to be more compliant in their declarations as the Command has devised other operation, strategies towards thwarting any antics of economic saboteurs.

The African Union Mission in Somalia Police Commissioner, Brig. Anand Pillay says the rebuilding of the Somali Police Force (SPF), remains a critical national security objective in its goal of institution building in the horn of Africa nation.

Speaking at the conclusion of an induction course for newly deployed Nigerian Police Officers on FrIday, Brig. Pillay asked them to support the rebuilding of Somalia’s police force.

“We all know that there is still a threat to security in this country and it’s our responsibility to support the Somali security institutions in building the security apparatus to take care of the country’s security,” Pillay said.

The police inductees will be the sixth contingent from Nigeria to serve the Mission. They replace a similar contingent, which left Somalia earlier this month, on completion a of year’s tour of duty.

The mandatory induction prepares police officers to better understand the Mission’s mandate and how it relates to their daily tasks in Somalia.

The unit will support Individual Police Officers (IPOs) in executing their duties, mentoring and carrying out joint policing with their counterparts of the Somali Police Force (SPF).

Assistant Commissioner of Police Francis Aryee, who is the AMISOM Police Training Coordinator, urged the newly deployed officers to execute their duties diligently.

“You are supposed to provide the necessary support to the Somali Police Force so that by the time we start drawing down, the Somali Police Force will be capable of taking over the internal security responsibilities of Somalia and deliver policing services that will meet internationally acceptable standards of democratic policing,” Aryee stated.

The sustained rally in the banking stocks yesterday lifted the stock market performance as the Nigerian Stock Exchange, NSE, market capitalisation increased by N16.5 billion to close at N9.1trillion.

In a similar vein, another stock market performance indicator, NSE All Share Index rose by 0.2 per cent or 18 bases points to close at 26,373.83 points from 26,325.93 points it opened the market.

Market operators attributed the positive performance to further interest in banking stocks which has sustained uptrend for four consecutive sessions due to bargain hunting.

Analysts from, Afrinvest West Africa said “We do not expect the positive sentiment on banking stocks to be sustained for long as pressures in the macro-economic space remain unaddressed.”

Market performance

Specifically, the positive market performance was driven by further gains in Zenith Bank which rose by 2.1 per cent, followed by Ecobank Transnational Incorporated, ETI Plc which surged by 4.3v per cent and Access Bank appreciated by 2.9 per cent.

Market activity however remained mixed as volume traded improved by 17.1 per cent to settle at 174.0million units while value traded fell by 68.7 per cent to settle at N1.2 billion.

Market breadth improves

Investor sentiment improved as market breadth strengthened with 17 stocks advancing as against 15 decliners. The best performing stocks were Diamond Bank which gained 7.2 per cent to close at N 1.19 followed by NAHCO rising by 4.5 per cent to close at N 2.80 and ETI which went up 4.3 per cent to close at N10.14 while NCR declined by 4.9 per cent to close at N 8.11 followed by Total which dropped by 4.9 per cent to close at N 285.40 and CUTIX depreciated by 4.5 per cent to record as the worst performers.

Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma, yesterday, told an expanded joint committee of the House of Representatives that the 2017-2019 Medium Term Expenditure Framework, MTEF, had to be altered because key projections in the document have become unrealistic.

It will be recalled that the House of Representatives, through its spokesman, Abdulrazak Namdas, had last Thursday, explained that work on the 2017 budget was being slowed down by the non-passage of the MTEF, as required by the Fiscal Responsibility Act and a prerequisite for the budget passage, but that it was expected that the document would be approved this week, while work on the 2017 budget commences next week.

Udoma, who appeared before the committees alongside the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun; Accountant-General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris, as well as management teams of the Budget Office of the Federation; the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN; the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC; Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS; and others, met with the joint committee of Finance and Appropriations, explained that “all our macro economic projections have to be adjusted due to developments after the budget was finalized in August 2016.”

He explained that the economy was not as robust as expected, as “crude oil production was disrupted and production came down to about half of the expected projection,” pointing out, however, that the new document was prepared after “extensive consultations,” and that it perfectly conformed with the provisions and requirements of the Fiscal Responsibility Act.

Specifically affected in the new adjustments, according to him, include the projected inflation rate of 12.93 percent, which had to be put at 15 per cent, as efforts at bringing it down from the current 18 percent in which it stands “is not possible” while putting other factors into consideration, and the exchange rate of N290 to a dollar and now N305 to a dollar.

On effect of the Treasury Single Account ,TSA, Minister of Finance argued that though the effect in the short term was bad, “but in the long run, it is going to benefit the economy,” noting that it was also an opportunity for the commercial banks to do the real business of banking.

She informed the lawmakers that “the black market would soon collapse because it is not driven by any fundamentals and is a very misleading market. The craze for dollars is not driven by any rational consideration and it will soon collapse.”

According to her, the nation’s currency is valued at between N305 and N315 but the unnecessary demand for dollar was pushing people to buy it at higher rates.

She said: “We are dealing with a shortage of dollars but the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has put in place measures to stimulate more supply of dollars.”

Also speaking on the efforts being made to address dollar shortage, a representative of the deputy governor of CBN, Mr. Moses Tule, said the apex bank was increasing exports to earn more dollars, adding that they are equally trying to reduce demand for foreign exchange.

Budget deficit reduced by N2.438tn to N2.356trn —DMO]

Addressing the committee further on the adjustments in the MTEF, the Director General of Debt Management Office, DMO, Dr. Abraham Nwankwo, disclosed that in terms of oil revenue, out of the outstanding $4.298 million, the Federal Government has taken into account only $574 million while $926 million is provided for early licence renewal.

He explained that “there is a deficit reduction of N2.438 trillion to N2.356 trillion in the revised MTEF FSP despite increment in the 2017 budget from N6.3 trillion to N7.298 trillion.

According to Nwankwo, $1.5 million only was earmarked for stepping rights out of the over $3 billion earlier projected.

The Joint Committee Chairman, Babangida Ibrahim (APC, Katsina), however, assured of the committee’s readiness to properly scrutinise the MTEF and FSP documents before a report on the 2017 budget is presented to the House.

He said the House was yet to see the adjusted copy of the MTEF/FSP and advised the minister to furnish the House with its details.

The Federal government threatens prosecution of individuals found collecting fees from Npower applicants/beneficiaries.

The Presidency also warned politicians against racketeering in any of the social investment programmes(npower) of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. The npower nigeria scheme is currently ongoing.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, in a statement Sunday night was reacting to claims that some party agents were involved in illegal sales of forms to applicants of the N-Power programme.

The spokesman of the vice president described the act as illegal, warning that it could warrant criminal prosecution.

Akande warned: “the rule affects everyone. No one should sell forms for N-Power or any of the president’s Social Investment Programmes (SIP). That is exploitation and it is fraudulent.”

Noting that none of the social investment programmes attracts an application fee, he asked Nigerians to refuse paying anyone money.

Akande stated: “We’ve been receiving reports about instances where Nigerians are being asked to pay application fees for SIP forms. We want to make it clear that such action is illegal and could warrant criminal prosecution.

“Let us make this very clear. In order to benefit from N-Power, you don’t have to pay any application fees at all. The way to apply is to go online to the N-Power portal. But it is not open right now as we are still working on the 200,000 unemployed graduates already engaged.”

He said there were also no application forms or fees for the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) of the Social Investment Programmes, explaining that “We are using a community-based targeting template of the World Bank and as we’ve explained, this is the mode of identifying the poorest of the poor and the most vulnerable.”

Over 200,000 jobless Nigerians have started benefitting from the N-power program, which is in its first phase. Beneficiaries of the programme are to receive N30,000 monthly to work in the Agricultural sector or teach in schools.

The President of Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ayuba Wabba, has disclosed that political farmers are main beneficiaries of different Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) interventions to support rural farmers.

The labour president raised the allegation yesterday at a meeting organised by Action Aid Nigeria in Abuja as part of activities to mark 2017 Global Week of Action to Fight Inequality.
He said inequality has permeated through the entire system, especially between the rich and the poor in Nigeria.

Wabba identified extreme poverty in the country, lack of efficient pro-poor policies and weak social protection programmes as a result of inequality.

“I have seen of recent on this issue of diversification, I saw people with briefcase and ties calling themselves farmers. They have no connection with the real farmers in the village. They don’t have land. They are portfolio farmers, political farmers. If you go to the CBN, they collect those loans and divert it.

Actionaid Country Director, Ojobo Atuluku, in her remark identified women and youth as most hit by impacts of inequality.

She said the non governmental organisation discovered that poverty and inequality was the major bane to developing the people.

“For decades, we have focused our work on reducing inequalities which drive and deepen poverty and exclusion. We have moved our work to the whole community, targeting the conditions and situation of children, both boys and girls, and the empowerment of women as indicators of a community’s progress,” Atuluku said.

A former staff of Ecobank Plc, Lagos, Kayode Ayodele, 34, who has been on the run since last year over alleged N30m fraud has been arrested in Ogun State, Western Nigeria.

Police alleged that the suspect connived with two other former staff of the bank, Tiaminu Lukman, 48 and Shaga Olu Sheriff, 34 now facing trial for the same offence to hack into the account of their employer and withdrew N30m which they shared.

The incident, according to the police, occurred between August 2013 and June 2015 during working hours.

The bank management uncovered the fraud when they audited the account book and reported the matter to the DPO in charge of Ikoyi division, Lagos, SP Tijani Mustapha, who directed the team led by Sergeant Tope Ijatuyi to track and arrest the suspect.

While Tiaminu Lukman and Shaga Olu Sheriff were arrested last year and charged to court, Ayodele went into hiding.

Ayodele was however tracked and arrested in January, 2017 at Ijoko area of Ogun State and brought to Lagos.

After investigation, Ayodele was charged before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos on a two-count charge of stealing the sum of N30m, property of Ecobank Plc.

Police prosecutor, Insector Jimoh Joseph, informed the court in charge No. A/01/2017 that Kayode Ayodele, Tiaminu Lukman and Shaga Olu Sheriff were staff of Ecobank when they fraudulently withdrew the N30m from their employers account and shared it without authority.

He said the offences committed were punishable under sections 409 and 303 of the criminal laws of Lagos State, 2011.

Ayodele pleaded not guilty to the alleged crime in the open court and Chief Magistrate A. O. Awogboro admitted him on bail in the sum of N5m with two sureties in like sum.

Awogboro adjourned the case to 20 January, 2017 for mention while Ayodele was taken to Ikoyi prison pending when he will be able to perfect his bail conditions.

Trade between Nigeria and China stood at 9.5 billion dollars in 2016, according to the Economic and Commercial Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy, Mr Zhao Linxiang.

Linxiang gave the figure at a dinner to host participants of different training courses in China on Friday night in Abuja.

The envoy said though bilateral relations between both countries faced challenges, Nigeria remained China’s fourth largest trading partner in Africa.

““In the first 11 months of last year (2016), our bilateral trade reached 9.5 billion dollars. It is a great achievement under the current condition the Nigerian economy is.

““So far, China’s total investment in Nigeria reached 2.2 billion dollars and Nigeria is China’s important destination in Africa
“”Our investment cooperation is expanding.

“A large number of Chinese investors and enterprises are concentrated in Nigeria and cover various fields like oil and gas exploration, free trade zone project, steel processing, manufacturing, agriculture, broadcasting and pharmacy among others,’’ the counsellor said.

He added that implementation of the 10 major China-Africa cooperation projects, which began in 2016 was progressing.

The envoy said it was important for both countries to promote win-win cooperation, seek common development goals and maintain high-level exchanges.

Linxiang reiterated China’s commitment to work with Nigeria to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation and promote Nigeria’s industrialisation and agricultural modernisation.
“”We will provide more training and scholarship for Nigerians under the framework of `1000 People Plan’.

““The friendship between both countries needs more publicity,’’ he said.

The envoy said the Chinese Government offered training opportunities to 3,200 Nigerians in the last decade, adding that 260 officials participated in different training opportunities in China in 2016.

“”Last year, we held the 2016 China-Nigeria Agricultural Technical Training programme; 40 Nigerian officials and technicians got trained in Abuja.

““This is a historical beginning which means we can achieve better results through providing localised courses,’’ he said.

Also speaking, the Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, said the relationship between both countries was beneficial.

““China has been in several developmental places in Nigeria,’’ Ahmed added.

The minister further remarked that continued engagement with the right partners would bring Nigeria out of its current economic situation.

“”Our focus is to develop infrastructure required to ease the difficulties of doing business in our country and the Chinese companies working in Nigeria are set to help us in deploying those projects.

“”We will be reaching out to you to make sure that some of the projects that we have started discussing are crystallising within the shortest possible time,’’ she said.

Mr Stephen Anayo, who spoke on behalf of the trainees, said that Nigeria could learn from China’s development.

Anayo urged the Chinese Government to sustain the training opportunities, adding that it would promote capacity building and boost development in the country.

The Federal Ministry of Finance has applied to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), for the operational licence of the Development Bank of Nigeria (DBN).

A statement by the Director of Information in the ministry, Alh. Salisu Na’Inna, in Abuja, yesterday, confirmed that the recruitment exercise for the Executive Management team of the bank has been completed.

The DBN will have access to US$1.3bn (N396.5 billion) which has been jointly provided by the World Bank (WB), KfW (German Development Bank), the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Agence Française de Development (French Development Agency). The Bank is also finalising agreements with the European Investment Bank (EIB) for more funding.

The bank was conceived in 2014 however, its take-off had been fraught with delays. The President Muhammadu Buhari led administration inherited the project with a determination to resolve all outstanding issues and set a target of 2017 for its take-off.

According to the ministry, “the operations of the DBN will not in any way, result in the elimination of the Bank of Industry (BOI), Bank of Agriculture (BOA) or any other existing development bank.

The operations of the DBN is clearly distinct from other development banks as it is focused on supporting small businesses defined by size and not by sectors.

“The DBN, will provide loans to all sectors of the economy including, manufacturing, services and other industries not currently served by existing development banks thereby filling an important gap in the provision of finance to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

“As a wholesale bank, the DBN will lend wholesale to Microfinance Banks which will on-lend medium to long-term loans to MSMEs. The MSMEs contribute about 48.47 percent to the Gross Domestic Products (GDP) of Nigeria but have access to only about 5 percent of lending from Deposit Money Banks (DMBs).”

The ministry expressed optimism that “influx of additional capital from the DBN will lower borrowing rates and the longer tenure of the loans, will provide the required flexibility in the management of cash flows, giving businesses the opportunity to make capital improvements, and acquire equipment or supplies.

“As the economy diversifies, the growth of the MSME sector will have a positive impact on the economy through employment generation, wealth creation and economic growth.”

Fidelity Bank Plc on Thursday splashed six of its customers with a total of N9 million in the fourth draw of the bank’s ongoing ‘Get Alert in Million’ promo aimed at promoting financial inclusion.

Speaking at the bank’s draw held in Lagos, Mrs Chijioke Ugochukwu, the bank’s Executive Director, Shared Services, Fidelity Bank, said that the major aim of the promo was to promote financial inclusion.

Ugochukwu said that the promotion was part of the bank’s effort in encouraging savings culture among Nigerians and also to empower its customers.

“We want to make sure that more people who have interest in this promo are able to participate and get the benefit fully.

To demonstrate our commitment to reward our customers, we have started rewarding customers in the second week of the year, with the fourth monthly draw.

A disgruntled prospective NYSC Batch B Stream 2 corps member has written an open letter to federal government and the National Youth Service Corps on the plights of the waiting members and the damage it is doing to the future of the youths.

The writer lamented on the silence of the NYSC on the date of the orientation date for 2016 Batch B stream 2. Recall that the service has been vocal in debunking fake news circulating about purported dates without giving a concrete timetable for the call-up letters.

The letter reads:

The wisest man that ever lived, Solomon, wrote, “train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he would not depart from it”. It has become a struggle for us as young school leavers and youths as we learn and try not to depart from the foundation and principles that makes and binds us as a nation. One of which is integration masterminded and its frontier is the National Youth Service Corps. Kudos to our leaders that brought this wonderful programme into this great nation.

I believe in Nigeria, our great country, we have been trained for the nation and we expect to reach out to lives through your platform ( Nysc).

Though it has delayed, we trust it should no longer delays as it affects us and the societal values.

Quite alright we were told we were to commence this January but it’s getting to mid January and we are yet to get feedbacks.

Many of us has to quit our jobs to ensure we get involved in this scheme while some had rejected job offers because they are expectant of the call this January. we trust you have us in mind; though delay is not denial, yet, delay defeats equity.

The FCT Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) says it secured 29 convictions out of 71 court cases instituted by it in 2016.

The Commandant, Mr Patrick Ukpan, made this known when he reviewed the activities of the command in 2016 on Thursday.

Ukpan said 354 cases were investigate by the Corps in the year under review, out of which 198 were resolved through alternative dispute resolution.

According to him, investigation into 85 cases which fall under the purview of the Corps is still ongoing in different parts of the FCT.

Ukpan said that the command recorded a lot of successes in 2016 as evident in the relative peace experienced by the nation’s seat of power.

This, according to him, is made possible by the dedication of personnel of the Corps, cooperation of sister agencies and support of members of the public.

He said, “The fact that the FCT Command, in the past year, has grown in leaps and bounds does not mean there were no challenges.

“There were logistics challenges like inadequate patrol vehicles as well as viable and credible information from the public”.

Ukpan lauded the police, army, Department of State Services and other sister agencies for their collaborative efforts, urging sustenance of the tempo in 2017.

He promised all residents of the FCT that the NSCDC would intensify efforts at protecting their lives and property, especially with the recent retraining of its personnel in counter-terrorism tactics, intelligence gathering and arms handling.

China is investing additional $40 billion in Nigerian economy, its Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr Wang Yi, said on Wednesday at a bilateral meeting with his Nigerian counterpart, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, in Abuja.

The Minister said China had already invested up to the tune of $45 billion in the Nigerian economy.
“ Nigeria and China are strategic partners; our relations have been developing well China has already invested or financed a total number of $22billion projects here in Nigeria, another $23billion projects are on-going.

“In addition, we are also following up another over $40billion of investments which is in the pipeline.
“Compare with the size, population and market of our two countries, our cooperation still have large potential to be deepened,” he said.

According to him, in order to achieve further development and prosperity of the two countries, we need to strengthen our political mutual trust, deep complementary between our developments.

He stressed on the need to further expand practical cooperation and deepen strategic partnership between the two countries.

He expressed confidence that his visit would be a successful one and play a dual role in further strengthening the strategic partnership between China and Nigeria.

Yi said the purpose of his visit to Nigeria was to implement the important agreements and cooperation reached between the Chinese and Nigerian presidents.

He said the visit was also to help work closely with Nigeria to ensure that the outcome of the Forum for China Africa Cooperation summit are well implemented here in Nigeria.

Onyeama had earlier commended the existing relationship between Nigeria and China noting that the relationship had been strong for many years..

“I think the level of cooperation with China is extremely high and Chinese government is investing amount of money in Nigeria and probably is going up to $60 to $80 billion and we are extremely happy for that.

He said that at the last meeting in South Africa and the government of China made available the total of $60 billon for Africa and a number of countries including Nigeria.

The Minister said that he would want to key in and see how much of that could be used to assist in the various projects that we have in this country.
He explained that President Muhammadu Buhari was in China in 2016 and had a discussion with Chinese Government on various cooperation..

“We know that in the area of infrastructure which is one of the priority areas and diversification the Programme of this government from oil .

“Chinese government has been showing a lot of cooperation with us in this area especially in the area of transportation,” he said

The Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayodele Fayose has directed that the NSCDC Ekiti State, should vacate her Command Headquarters situated along Afao Road with immediate effect, or pay N27.5million within 5days.

The Command Headquarters was allocated to the Corps in 2010 when Engr. Segun Oni was Governor and was sustained by the successive leadership of Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

Governor Ayodele Fayose was quoted that “the need became necessary because the State may find it difficult to pay salaries of civil servants in 2017” despite just received N8.5billion Paris Club Fund. He said the era of government providing accommodation for the Security outfits in the State is gone, emphasizing that he cannot be proving counterpart support for a Buhari-led Government agency as an opposition leader.

A source who pleaded anonymity spoke with our correspondent that “in a visit by the Commandant of the Corps with the Governor, the government had valued the facility at N27.5m and every effort to appeal to the Governor to buy little time to get the Corps organized was rebuffed by Governor Ayo Fayose.

“Tension rose at the Command Headquarters as the trigger-happy defenders were infuriated that despite the N250m monthly security vote of the Governor in the State and no logistic support whatsoever since 2014 when Mr. Fayose was sworn-in, it was a rude shock that he could shut down the Command Headquarters with such a very short notice”

Speaking further, the source said “As it stands, the officers of the Corps as law abiding and highly disciplined will not take laws into her hands as law enforcement officers, rather, we have commenced the process of contributing half of our salaries and will also solicit for funds to buy the place for our comfort.

It is highly unfortunate that despite the fact we pay tax running to hundreds of millions to the State Government and had some of our officers fallen in service to our fatherland, we got this poor welfare package in the new year, but we shall keep it dear in our heart for history sake”

The Federal government has made provision for N166.6 million in the 2017 budget for the establishment of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) University and N70 million to create a technology park in Abuja to deepen knowledge and application of ICT through the Ministry of Communications.

This year, the Ministry will be spending N7.5 billion on various ICT projects out of the N18.7 billion allocated to it. Aside the ICT University, the government said it will be spending N320 million on establishments of government’s ICT computer/devices repairs and assembly centre.

Other projects to be implemented by the ministry in 2017 include construction and equipping of ICT centres in Otukpo, Benue State and Yola in Adamawa state, each of which would gulp N70 million. Similarly, an ICT statistical office is to be established at the cost of N8.5 million.

The Minister of Communication, Barrister Adebayo Shittu gave assurance that the university would be up and running before the middle of this year. “By the grace of God, in the next three to six months, we should have established in Nigeria an ICT university which will be first of its kind in Africa.

“This is with the sole purpose of providing training environment and training facilities to make the industry have enough skilled manpower in various sub sectors of the ICT sector. I am happy to say that we already have what is called the Digital Bridge Institute which is for short term training programmes in six locations across the country and we hope to transform this institute into the ICT University of Nigeria.

“I am already talking to a lot of operators at the international level, Facebook, Motorola, Ericson, all of them. We are encouraging them to come and adopt the university campuses as their own. “They can bring in money and bring in faculties and a lot of logistics to assist in training Nigerians and we can now export these trained skilled facilitators to African countries to work’’, he added.

Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) executive secretary, Mr. Ajibola Olude, reacting to the budget allocation, said it signals the readiness of the government in establishing the university, describing it as a good move in the right direction. He said through this government has started giving the required attention to the ICT sector.

While urging governments at state level to also toe the line of giving recognition to ICT, he said with ICT University enhancing ICT knowledge, Nigeria in the next few years would be able to manufacture its own devices and this would reduce pressure on foreign exchange and boost the nation’s economy.

But Mr. Emmanuel Amos, managing director of Programmos Software, argued that many of the existing institutions offering ICT related courses have been running without the basic equipment and quality standards expected to run them, which eventually are reflecting the caliber of graduates they are churning out, whom he described as ‘unemployable.

He said without solving the problems facing the existing institutions, the idea of an ICT University can never be sustained, even when built.

“Agovernment t that has failed and have not identified a correction to the existing problems cannot build and sustain an ICT university in Nigeria. The hope is that they do not turn it into nursery school after,” he said.

In that moment, I looked back and thought of all the plans I had made about getting married and how they had ended up.

“I must be married by 25, so that I can be done with childbirth by 30.” I usually tell myself but looking at my present situation, I realized, sometimes, things don’t always go as planned.

I clocked 25 on the 2nd of January with no boyfriend, not even a toaster. In fact, I spent the day at home, and by night, I fell sick and couldn’t stand up the next morning but there was work to do.

I was on the bed trying to catch some sleep when Iya Micheal came in to remind me of that, which I had promised myself not to take thought of.

2016 was kinda rough as the relationships I found myself in either ended because the guy was not serious or because he was cheating and the other because he just didn’t want to break my heart, thereby breaking it.

In fact, the last one was so bad that I cried to my pastor in church, telling him how Bambo had broken up with me. How he deleted me on BBM 11 hours after he broke up with me.

“Hello, who is this?”

I didn’t believe I heard very well when Bambo answered the phone, just four days after he broke up with me!

At that point, I gave up efforts on trying to make us work. I decided to let go but I just moved on last month.

I thought I was done with that when some issues from the past came up that made me realize that my ex-boyfriend, Dimeji had lied to me on the reason he gave for breaking up with me.

After the many promises we had made to ourselves. After the many plans we had made. O mase o.

In all of this, I realized I had abandoned myself to attend to my partners who ended up leaving me. I realized whatever I did was just for them.

Meanwhile, some people in the name of advising me would say, “Sola, this talktalk that you do, you should reduce it. Be submissive. Be this, be that.”

And when I practice all the advise given, the men still go. So whose problem is it?

So, this year, I re-prioritised; I’m just going to focus on my spiritual life and my career.

However, if a good guy comes along, I’ll give it a try and if not, I won’t worry because everything happens at the right time.

Interestingly, these experiences made me realise that there is this expectation from single women that make them want to get married even when they know they are not with the right person.

Also, the society, in a way, attributes the reason for the failure of a relationship to the woman, as such, she does everything to make the man see that she is a wife material and this includes a girlfriend doing wife duties.

Until the “too much” importance placed on marriage is taken away, many young women will rush into unhappy marriages just because they want to please the society.

I am not saying marriage is bad, but if it is not coming at the time you envisaged, don’t kill yourself over it. Focus on other things and at the time you are not even expecting it, it may happen.

Dear single woman, don’t be carried away by your many friends who are married or engaged to be married. Sincerely, it is not the easiest thing to do but it’s worth it.

From all the heartaches, I have encountered, I don’t believe there’s something wrong with me and it will not make me close my heart to love, however, it’s time to work on other areas of my life.

The struggle is real, the pressure is intense, yet, I will not give in.

As part of efforts to ensure the complete annihilation of the Boko Haram insurgency from the Northeast as well as boost human capacity of the Nigeria Air Force (NAF), the Service would take in 5,000 new entrants in its 2017 recruitment exercise.

The Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar said several strategies needs to be put in place to ensure the complete restoration of peace and security in the Northeast in particular but Nigeria at large.

Abubakar said the expansion of the NAF and the compelling need to ensure that adequate human capacity to serve is the reason the Service has decided that 5,000 Nigerians would be recruited during the 2017 recruitment exercise, to fill in the spaces that would be created by the establishment of the fifth Command.

The CAS explained that the all the bases of the NAF all over the country are now adequately equipped to withstand any aggression, he also hinted that the limited number of attack helicopters required for the effective persecution of the operations in the Northeast is prioritized as two (2) Mi-35M Gunship Hel from Russia were recently acquired. The aircraft have already been delivered awaiting official induction after which they will be launched for operations.

While showing footages of the Air component operations and attacks on selected locations, where the insurgents had hibernated, he said 62 per cent of Intelligence missions were conducted not only to determine the location of abducted Nigerians but to also provide battle field situational awareness for the land forces, as well as lifting of supplies and logistics, including ammunitions, water amongst others.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) recruitment application is scheduled to begin January 14.

Ekiti youths have expressed their desire to pioneer what they described as ‘bloodless revolution’ as the State prepares for 2018 governorship poll, saying time has come for the youths to produce the next governor to prevent further neglect in governance.

The youth group said it would field a candidate against candidates to be presented by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the coming governorship election, lamenting how they are being ostracised in both elected and appointed positions.

The founder of the Movement for the Development of Youths and Children, Mr Tosin Ajibare, made the statement in Ado Ekiti on Monday during the 1st Annual Ekiti Youths Conference and EXPO 2016.

Ajibare, who may likely be the governorship candidate for the coalition of various youth groups, said the coalition may look beyond the APC and PDP platforms to realise the dream.

“We can’t allow this sidelining to continue and we have to take our destiny in our own hands. How can the old people be recycling themselves in government as if the youths are not growing or relevant? This is unacceptable.

“That is why we are going to pioneer this bloodless revolution in Ekiti next year.

“The economy is not working and youths are not getting employed. With this conference, the revolution has begun and time has come for us to forget the old ways of doing things. We will take over Ekiti government by 2018,” he said.

He, however, did not give a hint on the name of the political party they would contest on its platform.

Delivering his lecture entitled: ‘Youths: Leaders of Today’, a Lawyer, Mr Tobi Adelusi, regretted that Nigeria’s politics had been monetised, making it an affair of only the rich. “This may dim the chances of the youths from taking over the government,” he said.

Adelusi urged Nigerian youths to be focused, dogged and resolute in their quests to reclaim what belongs to them.

Mr Adelusi added that time had come for youths to reject bad governance by first rejecting money during elections and vote according to the dictate of their conscience.

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria , Aare Afe Babalola, on Thursday bemoaned what he called the poor state of development in Ekiti State, where he hails from, and concluded that politics has eroded the values of the state.

But apart from politics, Babalola also blamed the misfortune of his state on the discovery of oil in 1956 at Olobiri, Bayelsa State, which he said, diverted his people's attention from agriculture, which, according to him was their economic forte.

He said this on Thursday at maiden edition of Ekitipanupo Colloquium on Development , which held at Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos.

The theme of the colloquium was, “Restoring Ekiti Enterprise Values and Defining the Pathway to Lasting Socio- Economic Development.”

Babalola said, “It is on record that apart from Gombe State, Ekiti State receives the least allocation from the monthly Federal Government allocation to states. It will interest you that Ekiti land was contributing 44 per cent of the total revenue of the old Western Region through the instrumentality of agricultural produce.

But all that would appear to have disappeared, no thanks to the advent of oil which drew people away from their otherwise lucrative pastime of farming, which used to fetch them handsome income in the days of yore. ”

Babalola said though politics, in itself is a good thing, it had not been played properly in Nigeria.

He said it was regrettable that in the name of politics successive leadership of Ekiti State always jettisoned uncompleted projects by their predecessors, while they embarked on their own, which they also did not usually complete before leaving office.

He attributed the trend to what he called the falling moral values of respect for the elders in Ekiti State.

He said , “ Unfortunately, this is a country where newly elected political office - holders don ’ t see the need to build on the foundation laid by their predecessors because they find it difficult to distinguish between politics and governance.

This in many cases, has led people taking over the reins of government from their predecessors to always abandon the projects of their predecessors and start their own particularly when such predecessors are not from the same party with the new helmsman and almost in all of such cases to the disadvantage of the generality of the people .

IDO Ekiti, headquarters of Ido/Osi Local Government Area of Ekiti State, was thrown into mourning yesterday after a trailer crushed three residents to death.

The trailer apparently lost control at a major junction in the town at about 10.30 am killing two commercial motorcycle riders and a pedestrian.

The truck, said to be coming from Lagos, crashed into two moving motorcycles in front of Ekiti Parapo College, mowing down three residents.
Two others who sustained serious injuries were rushed to the hospital.

Ido/Osi Local Government Chairman, Ayodele Arogbodo, told reporters that the Divisional Police Officer of the Ido Ekiti Division and the Ekiti Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) promptly visited the scene to ensure free flow of traffic along that route.

Arogbodo said: “One of the ‘Okadas’ carried two passengers and another one carried three people. Three of these five persons died on the spot while the two other persons were critically wounded.

“I visited the scene this morning and those wounded are now at the Intensive Care Unit of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido Ekiti and the mangled bodies of those who lost their lives have been deposited in the morgue in the same hospital”.

Arogbodo, who expressed sadness on the loss of the three persons called on motorists to always exercise patience while driving on the road to prevent loss of innocent lives.

A resident of the town, who preferred anonymity, attributed the accident to brake failure that occurred after the trailer driver realised that he was too close to the bikes of the victims.

He said: “the truck was moving down the hill when he drove very close to that junction. The driver wanted to apply brake but the brake failed and the two bikes were already at the centre of the junction when the truck climbed the median and ran over them.

“The accident would have been worse than that but there were few vehicles on the road at that time. Even those who were coming from Ido Ekiti and were quick to recognise that the truck had lost control had immediately stopped their vehicles to prevent being crushed.”

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, an ex-boxer of repute, who retired from boxing after his enthronement in 1970, has dusted his boxing gloves and will, today, mount the ring to take on his opponent at Oyo Township Stadium.

The fight is the peak of a nine-day event lined up to mark the 78th birthday of Oba Adeyemi. When Saturday Vanguard contacted one of the participants, who is the Vice President of Nigerian Boxing Managers Association, Isiaka Olatunji, he said a boxing belt will be presented to the winner of the bout between Alaafin and his opponent.

A United States based ex-boxer, Mojeed Okedara was said to have presented the belt to the monarch as a gift for his birthday.

But the reputable king, who still has boxing blood flowing in his veins, reportedly said he would prefer fighting for the belt. His response yielded fruits and the bout is slated for today.

Right from that day, Alaafin has reportedly been training hard to overcome his opponent on the ring.

According to Olatunji, “His imperial majesty, Alaafin has been training hard everyday for the bout. I’m sure with level of his training, he is ready for the title fight.

At the preliminary stages of the events, many boxers from Oyo, Edo. Delta, Osun . Kwara, Ogun, Lagos, Ekiti and Ondo states had featured and engaged one another in competitive and energy-sapping bouts.

Before pugilist Alaafin mounts the ring today, a final match will come up between two other contenders. The fight holds at 11am today.
