Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Quitting A Job Within A Month: Share Your Experience by dammyllare(m): 3:21pm On Apr 21
So I joined a company recently based on referral…I negotiated 500k as a senior project engineer tasked with helping them solve some problems. First red flag, the engineers I met on site has the highest pay of 200k. The workers were poorly remunerated, carpenters and helpers that I usually pay 7k and 4k respectively were being paid 3.5k and 2.5k . The work time was 8am - 6pm daily with an hour break, then Saturdays 8am-4pm. These guys could not provide me with safety site wears in 10days. The project manager has no experience on road or structures and could not even organize site work using all known tools. No role delegation, no task check ,milestones or team meetings. It was unbearable with how unprofessional they were working . But they have the edge in Nigeria because they are Lebanese who has the means to get contracts. I forgot to say they could not even issue an employment letter before I resumed till I left. The last straw was these dudes forcing their workers to work through Easter break with no incentives…I told them clearly I won’t work during such holiday without a special agreement. Took my pay for the number of days and left….oh,I forget how embarrassing I look when these guys has meetings with the client/key stakeholders. Our representatives were like novice and there I will just sit feeling ashamed. Terrible experience.

Hi everyone, I will appreciate ur advice...

My son is 2yrs old , when he was born I and my wife named him Charles but my wife's mother and father can't stop calling him Daniel, when ever my son is at their place for holidays or visits, they call him Daniel and all their neighbors and friends now call my son Daniel.

I remembered I told my wife about it and her mother heard and felt bad, he is my son and not theirs, I understand grandparents give their grand children names too, I have a name from my grandparents but they call me by the one my parents gave me...

What do I do house?
You know what I think? I think you are just a frustrated dude who doesn't know where to channel his anger then decided to pick on his in laws. Like what is even your problem in all of this? I don't blame you, I blame the little change in your pocket that has made you to forget your pressing issues😂.
What if it is your own mother that has been calling him names different from yours?
An example, my mother has never called any of my kids the name I give them, she always call them by the name she gives at birth and my children are used to those names and recognize individuals with the name mentioned. Find another problem cause this isn't one

Comments here are very funny. Most people seem to be very political. Anyone on their good book can do no wrong.

Bashir made a good point that shouldn't have come from him. Its quite absurd when you see privileged kids raised by corrupt money make such comments. Its derogatory and stinking. When a clean oil enters an unclean vessel, it becomes unclean.

To Mr falz, when you come out as an activist, rightly criticising corrupt politicians, you will be held to a moral standard because you are a public figure and a role model.

In Lagos alone, there are more than 10 hospitals that will do this surgery. What's it about going to abroad for everything? Even govt hospitals can handle this surgery. To be fair to Lagos state govt, the state have fairly equipped general hospitals. The problem is the time wasting. However, more privileged people like Falz can use any of the well equipped specialist hospitals in Lagos. The govt cant provide all the health care needs and thats why we need the private sectors.
Aproko dr had a brain tumour surgery in a Nigerian hospital, operated by our doctors. He's another influencer and sharing the news alone would have made more people to believe in our drs.

If every privileged person is like falz, make money in Naija and go for simple treatments abroad, then health care business will break down. More doctors will run away.

If he knows being held to such standard is too much, he should stay off the spotlight. He even shared it on the SM. Just kneel surgery o.

And please guys, stop making this political. Our politicians are useless but lets address all these fake activists too just as would do politicians. They are both influential people in our polity that should be held to a standard of integrity.

I think we are getting it wrong. It is very absurd for someone like Bashir to even have the effrontery mock someone on going to get medical treatment outside the country. The rot in our healthcare system is much. He should rather be crying. A Fawehinmi may not have died if he quickly sort medical attention outside the country. We can't really hold falz responsible on how he spend his personal funds because his dad is not known to have held any political office. Just like saying he shouldn't travel abroad or own a house abroad because he is an activist. Until he holds an office, we can't fault him for using a designer instead of Aba made. I hope you get my point?

First, ask yourself who falz is and who is his father?
Are they politicians or part of the rots that destroyed our Healthcare system in Nigeria?
Falz still hold the right to spen his personal money on his choices unlike our thieves in politics who stole to stupor at the expense of the masses still rubbing on our faces traveling private jets to go use our common wealth to finance they and their family medical tourism.
You lot need to start using your brains

I'm aware of all that. But given that 3D sketch presented by the OP which shows a building on a budget, roofing sheets for that would certainly not amount to 5 million.
Very funny. Should I challenge you?

Very funny individuals on this forum. Most doesn't even know the cost of materials to talk of building a house. OP, 11m will try and give you good work depending on your taste. With the stone coated roof I am seeing, a gable roof with an height not looking less than 1.2m,11 million won't do it. What kind of tiles do you want? Nigeria tiles, wooden tiles, what kind of painting? Satin, mat, Emulsion, what kind of doors, you want POP or Pvc or ceiling board? What kind of wood you want for your roof? What kind of blocks you want? Sancrete or dust block? you want a cabinet set up in your kitchen? What kind of bathroom do you want? A good WC, shower, water heater or Jacuzzi. Alot is involved in building a house. Try to give your architectural drawing to a good QS or engineer to have a slight idea on what the market says.

concho:
We started dating when she got admission in 2018. She was a novice and a church girl then .
There was nothing like intimacy till 2021 and that was when I deflowered her ,

Since I promised my self that I must marry who ever I deflowered , I started taking care of some parts of her needs hoping that I will get financially stable and settle down with her .

She was the type of girl that everyone assumed to be an angel . I trusted her more than anything on earth .

She is too jealous that she suspects that I’m cheating even when I was not . She misinterprets everything an opposite sex sends to me

Fast forward to 2022 . She visited one day and got upset that another girl referred to me as “babe” on chat instead of saying “hi” . I insisted that she brings her own phone so I check if a guy has never called her babe

On getting to her chat , I noticed this guy that she saved as “my favorite” . They had no chats (she deletes everything) . I decided to dig deeper only to find out that this guy has been going to her house (family house ) to sleep with her . It’s not once , it’s not twice . And it was frequent the period she even said I should give her space that they were doing family prayers

The worst is that I told the mum and elder siblings out of anger. They did absolutely nothing . The mum only denied knowing that the guy comes around when everyone is out

A month later, I saw a chat of the mum asking her why she doesn’t pick the guy’s call again . I almost ran mad

She has promised and vouched that she won’t try such again and doesn’t know what came over her her .

I have tried everything possible to forgive her since no one treats me the way she does , but I keep loosing weight and falling sick by day .

I’m currently depressed and don’t know what to do again
You might soon be dead if you continue with that girl. Don't let anyone guilt trip you

Good morning everyone, I need input on labor for the first floor of my build.

Block is estimated to be about 5000pcs and bricklayer has quoted 540,000 naira as labor for setting blocks on the first floor. This doesn't include the pillars or lintel concrete work. What will be a fair price to negotiate per block.

Also, do labor price increase per floor or it's same.
The Labour cost is on the high side. But Labour varies with construction environment.
Also, yes... Labour price increases per floor due to the following.
Moving of materials from the ground to each floor becomes stressful.
Labourers would be paid to move hollow blocks, sharp sand and cement to each floor for use.
What you are being charged at the moment is around ₦120 per block.
Most probably that includes block setting, moving of blocks to the first floor.

My suggestion is to negotiate around ₦80 with him (inclusive of block carrying)
That's a fair amount looking at the level of inflation in the market

To our building experts in the house, please what is the standard foundation depth, width and concrete blinding thickness for a storey building?
Thanks

I find this very funny.
It is not as simple as you just made it sound this and more reasons are responsible for you guys being duped.

No structure or building are exactly the same.
Let's start with your soil investigation.
Where are you intending to have this structure situated? What type of structure do you intend to have, those it have any sort of cantilever or extension? Do you have an architectural drawing for it? What about the structural design?
Does these drawings conform to known standards? Will they pass for approval?
Please, always consult a professional for your structures and avoid people stating a specific width, depth or blinding thickness for you

I think we are out rightly trying to take food out of our quantity surveyors with this mentality.
No one would perfectly give you 99% cost value on whatever you want to build without taking into consideration your taste (designs), the span of the structure, the aesthetics and finishing.. All these would guide anyone expected to give you a cost estimate

Nigeria isn't the problem but lagos state.
You didn't say anything about what the new claim owners are demanding from you?

Things like this hardly happen in my state, Edo state.
Honestly Edo stat3 was worse than lagos in terms of land grabbing, omonilez and Co
...not until the Oba of Benin intervened, since then lands in Edo is a safe haven investment.

Anyways that's the hazards that come with buying land in choice areas, " be prepared for the worst"

You have a high taste obviously, if and when you get out of this, reconsider your taste a little next time so you can have rest of mind!
I do not think his taste is the problem neither is it a crime to have a high taste.
The problem is actually the greedy Nigerians who have destroyed the real estate/ construction industry.
People who want to amass great profits doing nothing or cheating others.

What I do with most of the lands I help client procure is reconfirmation from the right sources in government offices to ascertain the genuine owners of properties.

I actually pity him sincerely because it is not easy to save funds and try to do something good at a time like this

A Builder is also an Engineer

That's why the course of study is named in some institutions as "BUILDING ENGINEERING"

A builder is also not an engineer, he is a technologist and his work is better suited to interpretation of drawing, executing construction projects but not designing, surveying or sealing/stamping of authorised structures.

A builder can do some of the functions of a structural engineer but not total functions or that of a civil engineer.

It is good to have some knowledge of individual's role

You get most of this artisans are highly skilled. They've been doing their jobs for years knows most things about completing a project. See USA for example most of those guys no go school and they earn very well and do the work effectively.
They are countless project that this ordinary bricklayers have engaged in. Most of Nigerian 98% homes na ordinary bricklayers they build from start to finish, most of those artisans didn't go to school some can't even speak English but they do their work just fine.
So don't use the mistake of a few to generalize the rest.

Smiles, you are not enlightened.
In the USA, you dare not engage on a project without being a member of a recognized body. You can't erect a structure that didn't pass through the necessary testing lab or being below standard.
We need to know where every individual belong. There are engineers, technicians, assistants, interns and unskilled craftsmen and you dare not go beyond your skilled level without necessary approval.

Artisans no matter how good are meant to be supervised by a registered professional.

I have been opportuned to meet many great skilled artisans but what has made them to stay up there is that they recognize the importance of having a professional handling some certain aspect of structures for them.

Listen, as a civil engineer... I was trained to do the work of a Land Surveyor, a Quantity Surveyor, an architect aside my own work as a civil engineer but I would be selfish and stupid thinking I don't need these guys on my projects.
Let ys discourage all this bad habits

In as much as most people are right based on what they have experienced with professionals. It still doesn't justify giving any structure beyond bungalow to an untrained professional.
Yes we have many quacks and untrained civil engineers which is due to the decadence in our educational system just as we have quacks in all profession.

Let me ask, how many of us would allow a quack inject him, represent him in court and so on?.
I met a pharmacist some years ago who was building a story building at shagamu, I gave him a cost but as an igbo man, he felt his kinsmen could handle it.
I did design for him which he didn't even bother to collect. Just after the roofing stage.. The slab at a section collapsed.he called me crying and I told him I won't show him any pity. He has to pay my funds. After helping him make corrections, I asked him how he would feel if I engage in self medication instead of consulting a doctor or a pharmacist like him.

I did a project at Ogudu and after analyzing the soil report... I gave him a good structure which many people has been referencing.
A man came there to meet me because he just wasted millions engaging a quack build twin structure with one already settling and deflecting at the back almost hitting the second structure. The structure is visible as soon as you are on the Ogudu bridge.

I had a big madam come to my site when I was building rehobot bakery at Ogba, she was building around 60 shops at computer village with no structural person on site. She made use of a bricklayer and upon my visitation to site, I noticed the errors in reinforcement details, no calculations as regard the imposed load, self load or dead load. Not even considering if a structure is meant for a commercial or residential purpose. I refused to put my stamp on it for some hundreds of thousands and loose my integrity or my name.

Also, we need to inform our architects who are forming an Engineer after designing a project.it is not in your place or duty to determine the structural element, yours is to serve as a project manager representing the interest of your client.. Anything after that is out of place.

Lastly, builders and civil engineers have been so undervalued in this country.
I did a design for a structure at Amity estate last week, this guy gave the drawings to his QS and that one was trying to question my reasons for some reinforcement members. I became so mad and told the guy an ordinary QS trying to question my designs without running any analyses or having any background on structural designs.
He claimed to have not seen 2 section of a single building having different thickness of slab or the use of 25mm bar in beams on a cantilever of 2m...

We need to watch it and I don't beg people for work, I give you a bill and if you feel the cost is high... I allow you buy all the required materials while paying my professional fee
