The summary is that the actor's (Joaquin Phoenix) performance was great and the haunting score with the tragic themes made the movie interesting. However, a movie is rated on more than one actor's performance and the movie's themes.



Note that even critics who hated the film still praised Joaquin Phoenix's performance. That and the increasing levels of violence and madness made the movie interesting.

Joaquin Phoenix's acting was clearly special. It clearly showed a lot of dedication and hardwork towards the character. The tragedy was compelling and the message about mental illness is clear.
