Rev. Israel Akanji, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) FCT, has called for the retention of the posting policy of the NYSC.

Rev. Akanji told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday that the posting policy of the scheme had brought national cohesion and should not be stopped.

He, however, said that the scheme should maintain the status quo, stressing that the government should put measures in place that would prevent such a dastardly act in the future and not to cancel the scheme.

"I know that it is difficult, but I do pray that their parents will be encouraged to agree and we pray that it will never happen again. It’s hard for parents to say that their children should go there.

"But there are still some people in that same state now serving and we believe that God will protect them. The government should take a very strong and hard line and disallow this from happening again.’’ Rev. Akanji said

According to him, though there can be no monetary and material compensation that will assuage the feelings of the parents, government must be able to do something to help the families.

"You know that every parent trains a child with expectation that he will come back and be a blessing to the family and therefore we expect that the government will be able to do something tangible and concrete,’’ `Akanji said.


According to him, the idea behind the scheme is to bring people of diverse cultures, religious and ethnic backgrounds together.

"The posting policy of the NYSC is basically okay, this has brought a lot of national cohesion; we cannot thank God enough for the privileges of people serving in various places. We have had this bad experience; we pray it will never happen again.

"It is important for the government to talk to that state and for the people of the state to talk to themselves that they should not become hostile, but hospitable to people that are among them; youth corpers are representing the whole nation and this exercise should never stop.’’

Mr Michael Ejoh, Director Planning and Research, NYSC, also told NAN that the scheme had no power to single-handedly review the posting policy, but would consult with the relevant authority on what to do.

"You know there is a law establishing the scheme and it is part and parcel of our constitution. Nobody can talk of scraping the scheme without going through the normal process; so nobody can make any comment on that,’’ Ejoh said.

Ten NYSC members who served as ad-hoc staff in the just-concluded general elections lost their lives in Bauchi and Niger States following violence that broke out after the presidential election.

Some of the state governments, particularly in the southwest evacuated their states’ corps members from Bauchi State and other states in the northern part of the country.

Some stakeholders, parents, and even some of the corps members had been calling on the Federal Government to review the posting policy of the scheme so as to avoid a recurrence. Some others called for regional posting. (NAN)

A team of railway officials and policemen on Wednesday night in Lagos arrested 26 men, including a deaf and dumb, for allegedly sitting on the roof of a moving train and attempting to commit suicide.


The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the men were arrested at about 8 p.m. at Iju railway station on the roof of the Iddo-Ijoko mass transit train.


Mr Samuel Elumole, district superintendent of the railways, told NAN in Lagos on Thursday that the men would be charged to court on Friday for “attempting to commit suicide”.


According to Elumole, though the offence carries a fine of N50,000 or a 3-month imprisonment, the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) will plead that the men be sent to prison as the fine had proved to be no deterrent against this suicidal act.

Less than three weeks before he is to stand for re-election as Senate President, Senator David Mark yesterday began to push through an amendment to the Senate standing rules that will exclude all his potential challengers from standing against him for the nation’s Number Three office. The proposed rules seek to exclude first term lawmakers from contesting for positions of Principal Officer or other key posts in the chamber on the day of its inauguration early next month.

Under the new rules, only Senators Mark and Bello Hayatu Gwarzo will be eligible for Senate President and since Gwarzo has indicated no interest, Mark would stand unopposed.

The motion for the amendments, to be moved by Senate Leader Teslim Folarin, seeks to introduce a new section in the Senate Rules that gives preference for ranking senators based on number of years spent in the Senate in the contest for Presiding Officers, Principal Officer’s position and other key offices in the chamber.

The proposed amendment provides that “Nominations of senators to serve as Presiding Officers and appointments of Principal Officers and other officers of the Senate or any parliamentary delegations shall be in accordance with the ranking of senators.

“In determining ranking, the following order shall apply (i) Senators returning based on number of times re-elected (ii) Senators who had been members of the House of Representatives (iii) Senators who have been members of a state House of Assembly or any other legislative House (iv) Senators elected as senators for the first time.”

The Senate also proposed to delete Rule 97(1) (f) which provides that “nomination of senators to serve as Principal Officers and Chairmen of committees or on any parliamentary delegations shall be in accordance with the ranking of Senators in which member(s) previously elected intothe Senate are granted precedence.”

By the proposed provision, only Senators David Mark [PDP, Benue South] and Bello Hayatu Gwarzo (PDP, Kano) who have been reelected to a fourth consecutive Senate term will enjoy preference in any contest for the office of Senate President. It is only when none of them is aspiring that the next category in terms of ranking are to be considered.

The immediate implication of the new rule is to knock out incoming senators Muhammadu Danjuma Goje, Abubakar Bukola Saraki, Abdul Abdu Ningi and Muhamed Kumalia, all of whom are known to be interested in the Senate President’s office. Even though the coast was somewhat cleared for Mark when the PDP’s national caucus retained its old zoning formula which zoned the Senate Presidency to Mark’s native North Central zone, his camp still had fears that Saraki is also from the same zone. There are also fears in his camp that incoming senators, 40% of whom belong to political parties other than PDP, may shun the zoning formula in the choice of Senate President, hence the move to further checkmate Mark’s opponents.

The outgoing Senate is also proposing an amendment to Rule 111 of the Standing Order which seeks to ensure continuity of legislative activities from one session to another. Bills’ progression and other legislative work usually die with the termination of the life of the session.

But the Senate is proposing a new Section 111 that provides that “the legislative business of the Senate which remains undermined at the close of a session of the Senate shall be resumed and proceeded with in same manner as if no adjournment of the Senate had taken place; and all papers referred to committees and not reported upon at the close of session of the Senate shall be returned to the office of the Clerk of the Senate and retained until the next session of the Senate when they shall be returned to the several committees to which they had previously been referred.”

If passed, the first amendment will shut out all first time senators from contesting to occupy the position of Presiding Officers and other principal offices. The contest could also be based on number of times a senator has won re-election.

The motion listed on the Senate notice paper is scheduled for consideration Tuesday.

Of the four men known to be interested in Mark’s post, outgoing Kwara governor Bukola Saraki has no legislative experience, but both Ningi and Kumalia have been members of the House of Representatives.

As for outgoing Gombe State governor Goje, he was a member of the House of Representatives in the Second Republic.

Ten sets of human remains discovered near a remote stretch of Long Island beaches could be the work of more than one killer, according to county prosecutors. Officials identified a fifth prostitute believed to be a victim in the case as 20-year-old Jessica Taylor, reports Sky News. Her torso was discovered in 2003 in Manorville, New York state.

Her head, hands and forearm were found by police around 40 miles away in March this year as they searched the isolated park and beach area for more victims of a suspected serial killer. District Attorney Thomas Spota said: "It is clear that the area in and around Gilgo Beach has been used to discard human remains for some period of time.

"As distasteful and disturbing as that is, there is no evidence that all of these remains are the work of a single killer."Spota said that the manner of the disposal of Miss Taylor's remains, and those of another unidentified woman, currently being referred to as Jane Doe Number Six, led police to believe that it was not just one killer using the area as a dumping ground. He said: "The killer or killers of Jane Doe Number Six and Miss Taylor went through extraordinary lengths to prevent the victims from being identified.


"That is clearly not so with any of the other remains that we have found." Police uncovered the ten sets of remains over several months during their search for missing prostitute Shannan Gilbert, who still has not been found.


The first four bodies, found in December 2010, were wrapped in burlap sacks and identified quickly as missing prostitutes. As police continued searching the dense brush and sand dunes off the Ocean Parkway road they discovered six more sets of remains.

Spota also gave extra detail on two of the bodies, saying one was believed to be a young Asian man who appeared to have died a violent death. He said the other body was that of a toddler, probably a girl. Her body was found wrapped in a blanket.

President Goodluck Jonathan has described as “unfortunate, saddening and insensitive” the statement by National Legal Adviser to Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Abubakar Malami, justifying the post-election killings in the North.

Reacting to the position by Malami that the desire of Jonathan to win the Presidency by all means necessitated the killings, the Presidency said the implication of such assertion was that the killings were carried out by CPC supporters.Speaking through his Senior Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ima Niboro, the President said the allegation of rigging only started when the party noticed it was losing the election.

"This attempt by the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) to justify the unfortunate carnage and blood letting is vexatious in the extreme. It amounts to rubbing salt on the raw wounds of families who lost dear ones, and those who were maimed and lost valuable property to the carnage.

"It also amounts to an open admission that the party’s supporters were indeed behind the violence, and that the party may well have planned it all," he said.

He dismissed as “disingenuous” the comparison of what happened in South-west in 1965 with what happened in some Northern states as the killings took place where CPC won and Jonathan lost, pointing out that Malami deliberately ignored such facts

"It is on record that the election results were collated peacefully at polling unit, ward, local government and state levels without incident in those areas, and that it was at the level of national collation when it became obvious that the CPC had lost woefully that all hell broke loose.

"Obviously therefore, the riots couldn’t have been as a result of the conduct of the presidential elections in those areas where the bulk of the killings took place. It is thus extremely shocking that a political party, rather than condemn the killings, justifies them and worse still, with examples that just don’t fit. These blood cuddling murders, even of our innocent youth corpers that CPC today tried to justify, are even more disturbing because President Jonathan provided a level playing field for a free and fair democratic contest.

"This has been acknowledged by the world at large. This was acknowledged by the leadership of the CPC even in the run up to the elections. It is therefore hard to imagine what purpose these carefully choreographed riots were meant to achieve beyond an attack on those who were believed to have voted against the CPC candidate, and the Youth Corpers who were “guilty” of supervising the process.

"This can only be the reason why even All Nigeria People’s Party, ANPP, stalwarts like Alhaji Bashir Tofa were attacked and his home and cars razed. Even the Kano Local Government revenue office was torched, yet that is an ANPP administration. Neither did the rioters spare our revered traditional rulers, as they attempted to burn down the palaces of emirs they believed did not support their candidate openly enough.

"The CPC’s justification of murder and arson must be condemned by all. It is wicked, callous and insensitive. Nigeria is a democracy, and a country of laws. It is not a jungle ruled by whim and caprice. Nigeria is not CPC’s boot camp," he concluded

The Kaduna State government will still go ahead and set up its own judicial commission of enquiry in spite of the one that has been set up by the Federal Government, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Home Affairs, Alhaji Saidu Adamu has said.
Speaking to Daily Trust on phone, the commissioner said the state’s executive council had earlier resolved to set up its own commission to fish out those behind the post election crisis with a view to prosecuting them.

Alhaji Saidu who maintained that setting up its own commission would not amount to duplication of efforts, said even the Federal Government’s commission would have to rely on state governments in places where the crisis happened. The commissioner maintained that findings of the proposed commission would not be swept under the carpet. According to him, all necessary mechanisms have been put in place for the judicial commission of enquiry which will be headed by a judge. He said that the commission’s membership would soon be constituted.

The commissioner added that the commission is different from the committee on the management of internally displaced persons in the state, which he is heading.

Ongoing moves by President Goodluck Jonathan and other leaders of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] to zone top political offices to the six geopolitical zones ran into trouble yesterday when elected members of the House of Representatives revolted against zoning and demanded for the right of MPs to elect their own leaders in an unfettered manner. The House members, from four political parties and five geopolitical zones, said the Legislature must assert its independence so that it can grow and mature.

The revolting MPs’ position was made known by four re-elected House members led by the chairman of the House Committee of Electoral Matters Alhaji Musa Sarkin Adar, who paid a visit to Media Trust’s headquarters in Abuja yesterday. The other three members of the group’s publicity sub-committee were Mr. Godfrey Ali Gaiya, PDP member from Jaba/Zango Kataf in Kaduna State, Hajia Halima Hassan Tukur (PDP, Yauri Shanga/Ngaski, Kebbi State) and Alhaji Garba Datti [CPC, Zaria, Kaduna State].


They said their group would resist any attempt by either the PDP or the executive to impose any leadership on the House. Sarkin Adar said, “We heard that the PDP has zoned the leadership of the House to the South West but we are against any zoning because it is entirely the affair of the legislature to decide their leader. How could a zone that produced only three returning PDP members be allowed to produce the leadership of the House whereas you have other zones that have between 70 and above returning members?” he asked.

Describing the zoning arrangement as negating the principles of democracy, Sarkin Adar wondered why the leadership position should be zoned by PDP leaders to “a zone that has rejected the PDP and chosen a different party.”

“We are against zoning the office of the House Speaker to any zone in the country; the executive arm of government and the party (PDP) should hands off and allow us elect our leader(s) based on merit, competence and experience and not by imposition,” he said.

While vowing that the group would close ranks with their supporters from other geo-political zones across the country to resist the proposed zoning arrangement Adar said: “We must do away with the issue of zoning because we don’t want to sacrifice merit and competence.”

According to the publicity committee members, several House members from four geopolitical zones [South East, North Central, North West and North East] have indicated interest to contest for Speaker when the new House resumes, as have two members from the South West. Only MPs from the South South zone are yet to indicate interest in the post, the MPs said. PDP, they said, will have 202 members in the new House as against 158 opposition MPs and must therefore be careful in trying to impose the leadership, they said.

They regretted that the imposition of leaders has stunted the legislature’s growth, saying it was the arm of government that suffered the most from military incursions into politics. “During military rule, both the Executive and the Judiciary were still around. It was only the Legislature that was abolished. It should therefore be allowed to develop without imposition and zoning,” Sarkin Adar said.

He said the movement against zoning in the House has gathered a lot of momentum and will be opening its office in Abuja today.

Internet users seeking new information about the death of Osama bin Laden face being the victims of online phishing scams.
Cyber criminals have been exploiting bin Laden’s death by bombarding curious Internet users with rogue invitations to trap them into viewing ‘unseen’ pictures and videos of his dead body.

These vicious malware attacks are spreading fast around the Internet through attachments on e-mails and links on popular social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, according to Carl Leonard, the senior manager at Websense Security Labs.
FBI and global security experts are now warning online users to exercise caution while browsing for news about the death of Osama bin Laden.
Should web surfers click on these links and attachments, hackers can steal code and keyloggers installed on machines to get hold of personal information, like bank account details.
Websense warned that clicking on the fake links can also post malware onto a Facebook profile, ultimately spreading the scam across a user’s Facebook friends once the link is seen by them.
The Twitter account famously belonging to the Pakistan citizen ‘Athar’, who tweeted the raid live without realising Osama bin Laden was involved, has also been compromised by hackers, as they look for new ways to take advantage of busy websites in an attempt to infect massive numbers of computer users.
Speaking with Yahoo! News today, Mr Leonard said the online security firm has been tracking the scams since the news of bin Laden’s death.
He said: “Malware authors know that there is a huge interest in this kind of news and use it as a social engineering trick. Find your information on trusted news websites, don’t let curiosity get to you and use technology to protect you. There are Facebook applications which notify you when a scam is posted on a wall.”

When Osama bin Laden was killed earlier this week, US officials said DNA testing and facial recognition software proved they had got their man.

However, the lack of actual documentation released to the public (so far), and the fact he was buried at sea so quickly, has predictably seen an explosion of conspiracy theories dreamt up by doubters, or ‘deathers’ – as they’ve have now been dubbed. Here are just a few of them.


1. He must be still alive because there’s no proof

The lack of photos, videos and other evidence, plus inconsistencies in accounts of the raid that killed him, apparently shows the US government made the whole thing up.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid is one doubter. He released a statement to journalists saying: “This news is only coming from one side, from Obama’s office, and America has not shown any evidence or proof to support this claim.” Iranian State television also declared: "the mystery [of his death] has increased”.

Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan, whose son was killed in the Iraq war, also disputed the news on Facebook. She said: "I am sorry, but if you believe the newest death of OBL, you're stupid. Just think to yourself - they paraded Saddam's dead sons around to prove they were dead - why do you suppose they hastily buried this version of OBL at sea? This lying, murderous Empire can only exist with your brainwashed consent - just put your flags away and THINK!"

Naturally, several other Facebook pages made by skeptics have been set up, while searches for "osama bin laden not dead," "osama bin laden still alive" and "bin laden not dead" on Yahoo! spiked off the charts on Monday.

Our figures show most of the searchers of "bin laden conspiracy" were from the US states of Oregon, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Indiana and New Jersey.

2. He’s already dead

Ever since the September 11 attacks there have been numerous reports of bin Laden’s death. Back in 2001 Fox News reported he’d died of lung complications in Tora Bora. In 2005 Senator Harry Reid suggested bin Laden was killed in the Pakistan earthquake, while in 2007 Benazir Bhutto said the al-Qaeda boss was murdered by Pakistani militant Omar Sheikh.

Conspiracy theorists reckon official news of his death was kept from the public to continue justifying the war on terror, with the US government periodically releasing fake videos of the terror leader to keep the world convinced. The theory is that because the powers that be didn’t need bin Laden as a terrorist ‘boogieman’ anymore, they finally announced his death.

3. He was taken alive

Controversial Fox News talk show host Glenn Beck is famous for his conspiracy theories and gave a couple of suggestions about bin Laden’s death on his radio show. Firstly, he speculated that Obama ‘ghosted out’ the al-Qaeda leader - which means the Navy SEALs made it look like he was killed when actually he was taken alive, presumably to be interrogated.

4. He knew about a nuclear bomb

Beck’s other theory was that bin Laden was captured to stop him revealing the location of al-Qaeda’s nuclear bomb. This is reference to WikiLeaks documents that show US security officials briefed other countries on the possibility the terror group had a dirty bomb. Beck didn’t explain why the US government would do this.

5. He’s been ‘on ice’ for years

Another controversial US radio host Alex Jones said the US concocted the story to justify a security crackdown. He reckons bin Laden was killed back in 2002 and his body has been “literally frozen” to be rolled out at a later date.

6. He was given up by Pakistan

Website Maggie’s Farm quotes ‘speculation’ (though they don’t name sources) that, contrary to the reports the US acted alone, Pakistan actually knew all all about Osama’s location and offered up the al-Qaeda leader as a “sweetener” to speed US withdrawal from Afghanistan.

7. He was killed as a pretext for war in Pakistan

David Icke doesn’t agree though. No round-up of conspiracy theories would be complete without a contribution from Icke, who has written extensively about the event on his website. One of his theories is that the killing was fabricated to give the US a reason to actually invade Pakistan because they were harbouring the terror chief. War with China, he suggests, then Russia, will follow. Let’s hope he’s wrong.

8. He was killed to revive Obama’s poll ratings

Barack Obama’s presidency has been a difficult one. Universal healthcare, the budget deficit, high unemployment and fuel costs have resulted in low poll ratings and defeat for the Democrats at last year’s mid-terms, when the Republicans took the House of Representatives.

What better way then, some bloggers have argued, to get those poll ratings up than by suddenly killing America’s most wanted man? Writing on a Tea Party website, one conspiracy theorist said: "Don't you think Obama needs something to assure his re-election?"

9. He was killed to trump Trump

There’s no love lost between Donald Trump and Obama, with the property tycoon reviving the issue of the president’s birth certificate last week. Obama responded by first mocking Trump at the White House correspondents’ annual dinner. Then, when the time came for the bin Laden announcement, ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ had to be interrupted on NBC. The host? Donald Trump.

10. His killing was delayed for the Royal Wedding

The close proximity of the Royal Wedding and the death of bin Laden inevitably means some conspiracy theorists have linked the two events.

Firstly, a security expert told The Daily Express that the reason Wills and Kate postponed their honeymoon - possibly to Jordan – was because they had a tip-off on Friday about the upcoming events in Pakistan.

There’s also been speculation that the White House, who could have killed bin Laden on Friday, delayed pulling the trigger for two days in order for the two events not to clash.

11. His date of death is spooky

Osama bin Laden’s death was announced exactly eight years after George W Bush made his now infamous ‘Mission Accomplished’ announcement. Even spookier, it happened 66 years and 6 hours after the world learned about the death of Hitler. That’s 666.

FOLLOWING the defeat of Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN) in the just-concluded general election in Kwara State by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the founder of the political party, Dr Abubakar Olusola Saraki, has said that he has no intention of any reconciliation with his son and outgoing governor of the state, Dr Bukola Saraki.

His words: “I wish to enjoin our party members to disregard rumour of reconciliation between myself and Governor Bukola Saraki.”

The Kwara State political icon, who disclosed this, on Thursday, in Ilorin, the state capital, through a press statement issued on his behalf by the state Publicity Secretary of the party, Alhaji Abdullahi Oganija, noted that the April elections were fraught with irregularities through rigging.

“My dear ACPN supporters, our party totally reject all forms of entreaties by PDP and charge our members to be faithful, loyal and honest to the vision of building the Kwara of our dream. I will soon join you in the present effort at rebuilding our great party and assured that our party will be vigilant, alert and ensure that Kwara resources are not mismanagedt in the next four years,” he added.

He noted that the party had decided to remain as one indivisible entity, which would stay united and strongly committed to rebuilding its structures with a view to taking over power in the state in 2015 and urged all his supporters to discountenance the rumour as it had no element of truth in it.

With explosives rocking some parts of the country including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, the FCT Administration has proposed a N2, 558, 833, 910 support for security services in the area, as part of measures targeted at making the nation’s capital safe and secure.

The fund is expected to assist the security agencies offset their running cost and procure crime fighting equipment, including the Closed Circuit Television, vehicles and communication gadgets.

Disclosing this while defending the FCT 2011 statutory budget before the House of Representatives Committee on FCT in Abuja on Thursday, FCT Minister, Senator Bala Mohammed, noted that the fund was contained in the proposed budget and targeted at augmenting the equipment and personnel requirement of the police and other security agents.

He observed that the move would contribute in making Abuja a pride of the nation while adequate security would be put in place to safeguard life and property in the area.

The minister admitted that the Joint Security Management Committee comprising the FCT and its neighbouring states had not been able to meet for some months now owing to what he described as conflict in the timetable and programme of the stakeholders.

He, however, assured that the FCT administration had been able to establish a sound relationship with security agencies while the capacity development of their officers had been intensified in order to detect crimes before they are committed in the area.

Two weeks after the presidential elections, controversy over the victory of President Goodluck Jonathan in the south West is yet to abate. It was taken for granted that Jonathan who was the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) candidate in the April 16 poll would not garner much support from the South west geo-political zone.

This sentiment was understandable. The zone is the stronghold of the rival Action Congress of Nigeria(ACN). But the President won five out of the six states in the zone leaving only one to the presidential candidate of the ACN, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.

Since results of the elections were declared political stakeholders in the South West, particularly in Ondo and Lagos States have been bickering over who was responsible for Jonathan’s victory in the two states. Ondo is governed by Governor Segun Mimiko of the Labour Party( LP) while Lagos is controlled by the ACN.

In the forefront of these claims and counter claims in Ondo State are Labour Party Chairman Olaiya Oni, Minister of Defence Adetokunbo Kayode and of course the PDP leadership in the state. Shortly after the election results were made public, the LP chairman, in Ondo state, told news men that his party mobilized the state for the President. Therefore, the credit for the PDP presidential candidate in the state should be given to his party and not the President’s party men in Ondo. The LP which did not field any candidate for the presidential poll had adopted Jonathan as its presidential candidate.

Dr Oni said “ PDP lost woefully to LP in the April 9, National Assembly elections. During the build up to the presidential election, PDP members neither mobilized their members nor came out on the election day with their agents. It was as if they abandoned President Jonathan to us. If they have come out and mobilized the people like we did, Jonathan would have scored more votes.” But the PDP top hierarchy in the state said nothing could be farther than the truth. A party chieftain in the state, Mr Sunday Oyepetan said it is mischievous for the LP to be claiming credit for Jonathan’s victory in the state. He said it was equally wrong for the Minister of Defence, Mr Adetokumbo Kayode to be laying claim to solely mobilizing the state for the president.

Oyepitian said “it is worthy of note that out of the 385,376 votes scored by President Jonathan in Ondo State, 197,291 votes (51%) came from the southern senatorial district, where Dr Olusegun Agagu hails from; 99,726 votes (25.7%) came from the central senatorial district, where Governor Olusegun Mimiko hails from and 90,359 (23%) came from the northern senatorial district, where the Minister of Defense Adetokunbo Kayode hails from.” Contary to Oni position, that there no PDP agents to man the polling units for the President during the election, Oyepitan said it was the LP agents that were absent during the election. He challenged any one in doubt to cross check from the electorate if LP agents were at the polling units or collation centre to sign the result sheets.

He added that “in Ondo West Local Government Area home of the self-acclaimed ‘election mobilizer’ Governor Mimiko could only bring out 25,463 out of the 125,467 registered voters during the Presidential elections as against the 36,742 he scored for his LP during the National Assembly elections. From the foregoing we can all imagine the extent of “massive mobilization” that the Labour Party did for Mr President to win,” the party chieftain stated.

He said if anything, LP members worked for other parties in the presidential election. “The votes that the ACN, CPC and other parties scored during the National Assembly elections increased during the Presidential elections. For emphasis, the ACN scored 64,000 votes during the National Assembly elections while it witnessed a growth in the Presidential elections where it scored 74,253 votes, the CPC, a party which has only a marginal presence in Ondo State scored 3,795 votes during the National Assembly elections but scored 11,830 votes during the Presidential elections. Other parties of little consequence that did not score any votes at all during the National Assembly elections now scored 18,187 votes during the presidential elections”.

Also, the party stalwart said contrary to the impression being created by the Minister of Defence, that he single handedly delivered the votes of the state to the president, the Minister only attended one rally in Akure and another in Ikare throughout the campaign and election period. “It is on record that he did not visit any of the 18 Local Government Areas of the state during the campaigns except his own local government, Akoko North West. He did not consult with any traditional ruler, religious leaders, youth or women group”, the party stalwart added.

Similarly, the Ondo State PDP Youth Leadership Forum said the president’s victory in the state was the outcome of collective efforts of party leaders in the state who worked tirelessly to mobilize the state for the president. In a statement made available to Daily Sun and jointly signed by Messrs Elegbeleye Rasheed and Kolawole Femi, said the president’s victory has nothing to do “with the alliance between Kayode and Governor Mimiko.”

Also, in Lagos State , the chairman of the PDP , Mr Setonji Koshedo said it is wrong for the ACN in the state to claim credit for the success the party recorded in Lagos during the presidential election. Koshedo told journalists in Lagos that the ACN state publicity secretary, Mr Joe Igbokwe had at a television programme claimed that his party mobilized the state for Jonathan. In his view, the ACN couldn’t have mobilized the state for the PDP, especially as it has its candidate in the election.

As the controversy over who delivered the Ondo and Lagos states votes to Jonathan continues, one thing is clear, the president is happy that he proved bookmakers wrong by winning the South west votes.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has filed 29 charges against former Managing Director of Intercontinental Bank, Erastus Akingbola, his wife, Mrs. Anthonia Akingbola and an associate, Bayo Dada over alleged theft of about N49 billion. The charges dated May 4 filed at the Lagos High Court alleged that Akingbola at various times was involved in the theft of monies belonging to Intercontinental Bank Plc and converting such into personal use or funding private companies in which he has interests.


It alleged that Akingbola convered the funds either for personal use or to fund his private companies including, Tropics Finance Limited, Bankinson Nigeria Limited and Tropics Properties Limited.

In one of the charges, the EFCC said, “Dr. Erastus Akingbola whilst being the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Intercontinental Bank Plc sometime in March, 2009, in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of the Honourable Court stole the sum of £8,540,134.58 property of the Intercontinental Bank Plc by fraudulently converting same to your own use.”

The commission said Akingbola’s action amounts to “stealing contrary to Section 390(7) of the Criminal Code law, cap 17 Laws of Lagos State.”

EFCC also charged Mrs. Anthonia Akingbola and Bayo Dada with obtaining and receiving of stolen properties, through false pretence, while both were shareholders and directors of Tropics Securities Limited and Tropics Properties Limited.

The commission said Akingbola in collaboration with his wife and Dada defrauded the bank of billions of naira while channeling the funds through their private companies.

Former Military President General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida yesterday said the North must be allowed to produce the president in 2015 in the interest of justice and in line with the zoning policy of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) which began about 12 years ago. In an interview with the BBC Hausa service monitored in Abuja, the former president also said that the Northern Political Leaders Forum did not enter into any agreement with President Goodluck Jonathan before the just concluded general elections.


“There was no any pact. We that insisted on the retention of the zoning policy did not shift our ground because it is a written agreement and the PDP’s constitution has not been amended. And I believe, for our harmonious coexistence, the rotation of power is in the best interest of this country.

“Even the PDP, because it wants the support of the people, adopted the zoning policy in its constitution in line with the federal character principles in the Nigerian constitution,” Babangida said.

He said if there is fairness, by 2015, power should come back to the north as long as the zoning policy remains in the PDP constitution. He also expressed hope the zoning clause will remain and that northerners would have room to aspire for the presidency in 2015.

On the fears in some quarters that the zoning agreement may be breached in 2015 as President Jonathan did in 2011 and went ahead to win the election, Babangida said: “You will have to wait until the time comes and see what will happen. I believe there will be fairness and I know the people of Nigeria want the truth to be followed. A northerner has every right to come out in 2015 and say he is the one to be voted and he would hinge his decision on the provisions of the party.”

The former military ruler also ruled out running for president in 2015 but said he can play advisory role when the time comes.

On the just concluded elections, Babangida said: “The 2011 elections were better than the ones of 2003 and 2007. So we are improving.”

President Jonathan who was sworn in May 5, last year, thanked Nigerians for their immense contributions to the stability and progress of the nation in the past one year.

Looking ahead to his inauguration for a fresh term of office on May, 29, 2011, President Jonathan said that a new chapter of renewal and transformation has been opened in Nigeria’s national life with the peaceful, free and fair conduct of the 2011 general elections.

A statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Ima Niboro, quoted President Jonathan as urging “all Nigerians to join hands with his administration and dedicate themselves to ensuring the country’s continued march into a new season of peace, harmony and socio_economic development.”

President Jonathan also reaffirmed that “only the interests of Nigeria and the Nigerian people will inform decisions and plans for the future.”

The President said that he was determined to ensure that Nigeria successfully overcomes the challenges of inadequate power supply, national security and employment opportunities for the country’s youthful population.

He paid tribute to his predecessor, late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, whom he described as one of the nation’s greatest leaders and a visionary statesman, adding that he was committed to the enthronement of the ideals of patriotism and good governance, as well as the sustenance of growth and progress remain indelible.

Conakry – Col. Moussa Tiegboro, Guinea’s Secretary of State for Special Services and the Fight against Drug Trafficking and Organized Crime, said on Wednesday that some Guineans sold their kidneys for 10,000 dollars.

Camara, who was speaking on National Radio also said the phenomenon was more prevalent
in rural areas.

“People of bad faith, driven by easy gains, drive uneducated people to sell their kidneys, and these organs are exported for a fortune. The organ removal surgeries take place in huts, even outdoors, with people who have no qualifications whatsoever,” Camara lamented.

Having recently visited some clinics in Conakry, particularly in neighbourhoods where Chinese doctors offer their services to patients considered poor, Camara said he had all structures that do not meet required standards closed with the support of the Ministry of Health.

According to him, following his visit to the clinics, patients who were operated on in makeshift clinics were transfered to specialist centres.

“The makeshift clinics kill as much as drugs, and these are at the heart of my struggle,” said Camara.(PANA/NAN)

AKURE-EIGHT Senior Secondary School SSS 3 students of Saint Peter’s Unity Secondary School, Akure, Ondo State have been stopped from writing the on-going WAEC Examinations and expelled by the Ondo State government for fraudulent activities.

The state government subsequently ordered their arrest and they may be charged to court for fraud.

The State Education Commissioner, Dr Pius Osunyikanmi, said the present administration in the state would not allow miscreants to turn schools in the state to where criminals were bred.

Dr Osunyikanmi noted that the affected students defrauded the state government by paying their school fees into the account of one of them after which they present fake duplicate tellers to the School for clearance.

He advised the parents to instill discipline into their children, warning that the state government had zero tolerance for such criminal activities .

Dr Osunyikanmi said government took the drastic action to serve as a deterrent to others.

Names of the students arrested include Adenuga Abiodun, Ewegbemi Tope, Imafidon Tope, Akinnawonu Nelson, Olorunusi Ayodeji, Ayinnuola Damola, Umeric Michael and Akindowa O.

Vanguard finding revealed that one of the students mooted the ideal to others and after they were successful in the first attempt they invited more students to join in the fraudulent activities.

It was gathered that the initial number that started the fraudulent practice were three and it later increased to five and again rose to eight.

The out-going Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Princess Sarah Sosan, has said she had no regret for not returning as the number two citizen of the state when Governor Babatunde Fashola will start another four year term at the end of this month just as she said she would go back to classroom as a teacher. Princess Sosan who said she had come, seen and conquered as the deputy governor and manager of the state Ministry of Education since 2007 gave thanks to God for the opportunity given her to serve the people by Action Congress of Nigeria(ACN) promising to give her support to the ministry and the party whenever she is called upon.
She advised state governments across the country to take the issue of education seriously, saying quality education is the answer to the development of the country.

Addressing journalists yesterday at the Bagauda-Kalto press centre, Ikeja, Princess Sosan said,

“Despite the transformation at the state’s education sector, Lagos is yet to arrive at a desired height. Our dream is very big. We have not arrived at our desired height. We want our SSS students to compete with their colleagues from any part of the world. We abhor half-baked students and we are working towards our aim.”

Disgust and fear are two of the most common responses one gets from most Nigerians when responding to any query about the Nigerian police.

The feeling of disdain towards the police in Nigeria has led to the new cliché “my police story”. Everybody is expected to have an uncanny police story, mostly negative because it is now rare to hear good tales of Nigeria’s finest officers in black.

Apart from the usual sleight of hand trick often witnessed between motorists and Police men at check points all over country - an aberration that is now an acceptable norm - on high ways in most part of Nigeria, the Nigerian Police are challenged in meeting the international standard of one police man to four citizen ratio.

Most often, the disaffection most Nigerians harbour towards the Police is reflective of a lack of confidence in the force to 'Protect and Serve with Integrity.'

This Daily Trust reporter hit the streets of Abuja to investigate the reasons behind the often heard ill-feelings towards the police, asking citizens to share their “Police Story”.

Mohammed Ali. a civil servant in Abuja, in a jolly mood narrated the story of his police arrest for being in a 'Black spot'. He said; “I had never heard of the term 'black spot' before. I only stopped to pick up a female friend at a junction close to her house when the police forced us to follow them to the station. This was only about 7 pm in the evening”.

AlKasim Abdulkadir described his Police story with some amusement, looking back at the unfortunate event when he was arrested for "BGT".

He recalled that he had astonishingly asked the police men who accosted him that how can he be said to “belong to a gang of thieves” when he was alone on a busy road in Minna, looking to get a taxi home, when the police arrested him.

Madam Janet a trader in Utako, Abuja, said she was arrested for vouching for the innocence of a neighbor who a Police man came to her compound to arrest. In the fracas that ensued, she admitted to hitting the officer with a stick which resulted in an injury. In her words “the police man tried to push me down the stairs so I grabbed his shirt and in the process tore his shirt and hit him with my walking stick”.

Janet claimed the Police detained her at their post from around 11 am in the morning until 8 pm demanding she pay 15, 000 naira as 'settlement'. (video below)



Mike Ehuma a resident of Karmo, a suburb of Abuja, complained that the Police arrested about seven of his friends at a society club meeting in Karmo. According to Mike, “they said we were planning a coup, that our gathering was illegal. In the end they demanded two thousand naira from us”. (video below)



Simon, a business man and taxi driver in Utako, said the fear of police is the beginning of wisdom in Nigeria, he narrated his tale of woes when the Police arrested him at Jabi junction for allegedly flouting traffic rules. (video below)



However, it was not all stories of woes against the police, Mr. Christian an Abuja based civil servant, believes that the police if properly funded can do better; he blamed the ineffectiveness of the Nigerian Police on a corrupt system, urging the appropriate authorities to rebrand the police force. WHatever the case may be, the security situation in the country in recent times have raised serious questions about the effectiveness of the Police to curb crime and dispense justice effectively. And with the common practise of serving as Judge, Jury and Executioner in many cases, it is no wonder that some Nigerians find it hard to understand how they can be called their 'friends'.

Determined to smuggle drugs through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos, a suspected drug syndicate has concealed 3.200kg of high grade cocaine with an estimated street value of 30 million naira inside candles.

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) made the discovery last Sunday during the inward screening of passengers on Emirate flight from Brazil.

The drug was industrially packed inside six big candles, four of which are black while the other two are green. While answering questions from narcotic officers, the prime suspect,Aina Fausat Olanrewaju, said that the candles were meant for spiritual use. Not satisfied with the explanation, the candles were broken and found to contain cocaine. She was arrested at the arrival wing of the airport following the discovery of the cocaine- laden candles in her luggage containing clothes, shoes and bags.

The 45-year-old single mother of two children is believed to be working for an international drug cartel with stronghold in Brazil.

She had been taken on follow-up operations within the country to arrest other people linked with the crime. Two other persons had already been arrested in connection with the crime while the agency has commenced investigation to determine their degree of involvement.

THE Federal Government has pegged the carrying capacity of the nine newly established federal universities at 500 students per session.

The new federal universities created by President Goodluck Jonathan across the six geopolitical zones are in Kogi, Taraba, Ebonyi, Jigawa, Bayelsa, Gombe, Ekiti, Nasarawa and Katsina states.

Minister of Education, Professor Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufa’i, speaking with newsmen after declaring open a two-day retreat for vice chancellors and registrars of the newly approved fourth generation federal universities, expressed the need to have a trim number of students in the universities in order to regulate the product of the institutions.

She urged the vice- chancellors to ensure strict compliance with the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) guidelines on the carrying capacity of the universities set up as specialised institutions, saying, “we really want to have control so that we can have more effective teaching and quality graduates in these institutions.

“The issue of carrying capacity is a directive because we do not intend to have more than we can carry. Actually, we want to start with 100 or 200 per session so that by the time the universities are on full stream, we do not intend to have more than 500 students per session,”the minister declared.

President Jonathan had approved the appointments of vice-chancellors and registrars for the newly established universities while a committee headed by the executive secretary of the NUC, Professor Julius Okojie, was inaugurated to develop the Academic Brief and Physical Master Plan of the universities.
