SaharaReporters has further confirmed that Festus Iyayi, a well-known Nigerian novelist and activist academic, was killed when a car in the convoy of the Kogi State Governor, Idris Wada, rammed into his vehicle near Lokoja in Kogi State.
A police source as well as an eyewitness told SaharaReporters that Mr. Iyayi died instantly at the scene of the ghastly accident. Mr. Iyayi was on his way to Kano to attend a meeting of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) whose members have been on strike since July. The union’s meeting in Kano was called to decide on a possible calling off of the strike and a return to teaching.
With today’s accident, Governor Idris has further consolidated his reputation as having one of the most reckless convoys in Nigeria where drivers attached to governors and other top officials are known for driving dangerously. In late December 2012, Governor Idris’s convoy was also involved in a deadly accident that claimed the life of his aide de camp. Mr. Idris was hospitalized at the National Hospital, Abuja where he was treated for serious injuries.
In a brief telephone conversation today, Kogi’s Deputy Governor, Yomi Awoniyi, confirmed that the governor’s convoy was involved in an accident earlier today. But Mr. Awoniyi said he had not obtained the details of how the accident happened, telling our correspondent that he was away in Uyo, capital of Akwa Ibom State, on official duty.
In the early and mid-1980s, Mr. Iyayi broke out of the confines of his academic discipline and emerged as one of Nigeria’s most radical writers with such novels as Heroes, Violence, and The Contract.
Mr. Iyayi studied economics and business management in the old Soviet Union as well as in the UK, and became a career-long professor of business at the University of Benin (UNIBEN).
A fearless, outspoken member of ASUU, he was at one time a leader of the union’s chapter at UNIBEN before becoming the group’s national leader in 1986 during the dictatorship of General Ibrahim Babangida. In the early 90s he was elected as the President of the Committee for the Defence of Human rights (CDHR).
His death will be seen as the biggest individual casualty of ASUU’s prolonged strike as well as the history of accidents caused by the deranged driving by convoys traveling with Nigerian state governors.
ASUU President Nasir Fagge confirmed his death to SaharaReporters. He said the sad news was broken to the union a few hours ago.
A lawyer in Abuja told SaharaReporters that he hoped Mr. Iyayi’s family would sue Governor Idris for failing to restrain the recklessness of drivers attached to his convoy. “This madness by the convoys of governors will not stop until citizens affected by it start rising to say a big no,” the lawyer said.

You know a university is shady when even a dog can get a Master’s degree. Yes, you heard right – in order to unmask the American University of London (AUOL), BBC Newsnight had Pete the dog apply for an MBA at the American University of London (AUOL). After paying £4,500, the furry “management consultant” actually received his degree.

AUOL is a bogus university which prays on the naivete of people who want to bulk up their resume in preparation for that executive dream-job interview. The so-called educational institution offers distance learning courses that, according to their website, “have been designed to the most exacting standards, in accordance with the most stringent criteria, in order to provide outstanding education at an affordable price.” AUOL then issues corresponding degrees and post-graduate qualifications in business, IT, law, education and liberal arts, humanities and English. Newsnight managed to uncover AUOL’s fraudulent money-making business by setting up a fake identity and CV for the lovely hound Pete. Thus, Peter Smith was born, a management consultant from South London with an undergraduate degree from a real UK University. After e-mailing them his CV and paying £50 – the mandatory application fee, Peter was asked to provide the institution photocopies of his previous qualifications and a photograph of himself. Of course, Pete did not oblige as his resume was made-up and his long dog face could not pass as a real man. Nonetheless, four days later, Pete received a message from AUOL stating that his application for a degree had been processed and that in two weeks he was going to be registered as an MBA graduate. All he had to do was to provide them with £4,500.

Surprised, Pete aka the Newsnight crew, inquired about what kind of work he would have to submit in order to earn that said degree. AUOL said that his 15 years of experience in the field were sufficient to qualify him for an MBA. “No, no, apparently the APEL [Accreditation of Previous Experiential Learning] board awarded him the full degree immediately based on his qualification and his professional experience, so he doesn’t have to do any courses,” AUOL answered. Hundreds of senior executives who had written AUOL qualifications in their resumes, were tracked down by the curious crew just to find out about the kind of painstaking work they had to provide in order to earn their phony credentials. It was no surprise that all of them stated they had worked very hard for their AUOL degrees. A psychologist from Birmingham and expert advisor in court cases, Dr Robert Oakes, submitted such good work that he got his AUOL PhD in just five months. Oaks said that his previous 18 months conducting research had been an asset to him in the process of earning his PhD. Apparently Oakes was very surprised to find out that AUOL wasn’t accredited and has since removed the university’s qualifications from his CV.



Another naive soul and senior nuclear industry executive in charge of selling a new generation of reactors in the UK, Dr Rita Bowser, also has a doctorate degree from AUOL but in business. She earned her degree by submitting “significant amounts of coursework.” We certainly believe Dr Bowser especially since her employer vouches that she is very qualified for her job and has 30 years experience in the field and a master’s from Georgia Tech. During their detective work, Newsnight found out not only that AUOL is not accredited but that it is not even present in London, with their real “headquarters” being St Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean, as clearly stated on their website. They also claim to be recognized by three also bogus American institutions. Moreover, their highly qualified lecturers haven’t even heard of AUOL. One of the unlucky academics who made it on their website as a supervisor, George Colin, states that “It doesn’t have authority to award degrees. They are not degrees. They are pieces of paper and I’m guessing they are not able to sell very many degrees into countries where English is the first language.”

In spite of the above, you can now breathe easy, because AUOL is a legitimate institution… according to AUOL.  “We are not a bogus university… and have always been upfront about our status. We have not applied for accreditation with any American, British or other official agency. Many graduates go on to higher education or hold important positions on the strength of our degrees.” Yes, that might be so, but just ‘cause it’s written on their CV doesn’t make it true.

The war songs preceding the national elections are here again. Just like in 2011,  some Nigerians have taken it upon themselves to decide a group of people that are eligible to run and individuals that should not run. Those said to be eligble to run are not being mentioned, but the incumbent as in the past has clearly been marked as the one that should resign his position and never to contest the presidential election. Like in the past, after Mr. President's interview with CNN's Christiana Amapour sometime in June 2010, Mr. President was not just quoted as he is not interested in the 2011 elections, but was interpreted as saying he would not run. Be it as it was, all those that made themselves the eligible ones have always been scared of going to test their popularity in the polls with Dr. Jonathan.

 

Reasons have always been bothered on his competency, his eligibilty and his ability to keep to a gentleman's agreement. All these reasons put forward is compeled by the singular fact that Dr. Jonathan and his region has never been eligible to contest and be a Nigerian President at least for the next number of unmentioned years. Accusations has been insinuated in every corner without prove that it has been seen to be a child's talk in recent times. What baffles most Nigerians is the aggressiveness at which these statements are made. Am not here to make its quote but to look at the justifications there presented. Take for instance, the said agreement signed by Mr. President to contest for a single term has never been put forward to the public even though we keep hearing of its threats. Mr. president in the media chat yesterday has even challenged those that were signatories to the agreement to come forward with it. Am not here to discuss the media chat.

 

 

Nigerians are quick to forget that one of the reasons that gave birth to the famous Northern Elders Forum in November 2010 was when Mr. President refused to sign this much talked about agreement that was to indicate that a northerner will be made President of Nigeria come 2015. That was when men like Ciroma, IBB, Atiku and co decided against supporting Mr. President's bid to contest the 2011 elections. It was even in one of my articles sometime in December 2010 where I mentioned Mr. President walking out of a meeting with 9 Northern Elders because he insisted that Nigerians will have to decide on their leader at all time as it was not his duty to impose leadership on Nigerians. So I wonder where this agreement was made. Would he sign and agreement to do a single term of four years and refuse to sign an agreement to make a northerner the next President? Was the intended single term agreement not all about power going back to the north? Why are we not logical here?

 

 

Ever since then, Mr. President has been in one distraction after another. Boko Haram had been introduced as a short term distraction to make Nigeria ungovernable as promised, or will I put is as that which a violent take over of government was imminent if a peaceful one was neglected? but today, it has become a monster that even its masters are finding it difficult to control. Even if Mr. President was slow to take charge of it, it has now become clear that Mr. President's approach was the best as at the time. Next in line was the sponsored kick starting of  distabilization in the south east with the extension of kidnaping from the south south region, yet at the right time, it was condoned off. Who says Mr. President has ever been clueless? I will take it that Mr. President takes his time to study every challenge so as not to jump the gun. Lessons where learnt in the October 1, 2010 Independent Bomb Blast subtly known as the IBB. If Mr. President had reacted to boko haram at its inception, the religious sympathizers would not have been given the opportunity to see the reaction as a war against terrorist, but rather would have been seen as a war against religion. It would not go well on its intentions. Truth is that the Nigerian security agents are fighting a gorrila warfare. And anybody using that as a means to discredit President Jonathan should tell me if the war at Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia has been won.

 

Let us even for ones really look closely on issues that Mr. President has been criticized about. Then let us take a while to consider if President Goodluck Jonathan is worthy of our support and why? I would like us to ask ourselves why Mr. President has been undoubtedly been criticized on all occassions and by who? First, what is Mr. President criticized about. What was expected of him as a Nigerian leader that he has not done or attended to? What do the critiques really shout about? I can assure you that you will be told is that he is CLUELESS. If you ask what clue was expected of him, you will without doubt not have an answer, if you do, it will never be logical. So I will take out time to think out my understanding of their criticism.

 

INTEGRITY

SECURITY

CORRUPTION

INFRASTRUCTURE

ELECTRICITY

 

All these will be summed up as his electoral promises. They will tell you he has failed and they want him out because they wish to correct and implement it. Question is, has he failed? I don’t want to bother about the fact if they will fix the problems of Nigeria or not. Why should I bother about the capacity of a man that is not even known? Can that be justified?

 

INTEGRITY

Mr. President is said to lack integrity because of the alleged agreement he signed with the northern elders to rule for a single term. While Mr. President is accused of this integrity, has any of the accusers come out to present any document that was signed by Mr. President? Have they mentioned names of the parties that were involved in this agreement? They keep saying it was a gentle man agreement, but with who? Were there no other signatories? If Mr. President actually walked out of a meeting with some people because, he refused to sign to a conspiracy. Who is the one that lacks the integrity? The man that wanted the agreement signed or the man that refused to be part of a conspiracy?

To this end, I ask us to be the judge.

 

SECURITY

The insecurity in Nigeria is man made. This insecurity was promised before the commencement of Mr. President’s substantial tenure. It could be testified to with the post election killings in some sections of the country when Mr. President was declared winner of the election.

It is very clear that the kind of insecurity that was introduced to make the nation ungovernable was alien to the security apparatus and entire country. Caution was required as it came in the name of religion. Religion is an apparatus that is solely dependent on faith and defiles over 80% of logic and prove. It is a great tool that  is emboldened by a will-power. So sometimes, it requires a great mind to decipher truth and deceit in its practice. The introduction of Boko Haram was a well thought out strategy as even the tool to fight it was designed to have its sympathy. In cases as such, diligence was required. The sympathetic mind of a course would naturally require time to test either its truth or deceit. For now it is clear in the minds of all Muslims that Boko Haram is of wicked intentions and as such, some Muslim youths in Borno have join forces to fight the menace. It is also clear that those criticizing Mr. President of insecurity are the main instigators of the monster. So why should we listen to them? Should that be a reason for Mr. President to relinquish power to some elements? Even the said weakness of Dr. Jonathan has become strength in power management. To this end, a number of Nigerians can clearly see that the fight against insecurity is gradually being won by the security agencies commanded by Mr. President.

 

CORRUPTION

Corruption itself has been an enigma that has plagued Nigeria for decades. It did not just start and neither will it end suddenly. It is an institution that has come to be openly rejected by all but secretly embraced by the same people. It’s an orientation that has been embedded in the minds of Nigerians though sometimes seen as a blessing. Nigerians will require purification and a re-orientation of their minds to solve the challenge that has eaten deep into our society.

To fight corruption squarely, heads will have to roll from the top to the bottom of the society. And this is solely dependent on how we all define corruption. Some people will give their actions an acceptable definition while some will only agree to it as one if they are not beneficiaries. All these will not help in the collective fight against it as favorism can also encourage corruption. Because of favorism, some Nigerians will cry foul if anyone perceived as being in the opposition is tried for corruption. Same critiques will alleged a friend of Mr. President has fallen out of favor if he is also publicly tried of corruption. There is always something to criticize the president of. Why it will continue like that is because Nigerians are basically used to giving their personal interpretations to every occurrence. Hence, the cry for corruption will continue for a while.

Mr. President in his understated but productive wisdom had in one of his earliest executive council meeting told his team that the best way of fighting corruption was to build institutions that will discourage corruption. And since corruption is greatly encourage in government agencies, hence the decision to focus more on privatization of most of these agencies. We are witnesses to the success in the Nigerian ports and other sectors that are currently undergoing the process of privatization. We are also witnesses to the Federal government concentration in following dues process for contract awards in recent days. Ministries go through extra scrutiny to have funds approved to them. Even the Minister has to show a report on his achievement to reconcile with funds received by such ministries. Where is the funds stolen from? Like Mr. President said, building institutions to discourage corruption is the best way of fighting corruption in Nigeria. When you hear people cry foul, they are either doing so because they feel shortchanged, or they are doing so just to discredit the system that is not allowing business as usual. Until a time when it is clear that corruption is not welcome, we will continue to have these criticisms. So will Mr. President relinquish power to the unknown because the business is not as usual?

So when these critics keep making their voices loud, they have failed in pointing out the areas of failures that has made it logical enough to ask that Mr. President is not eligible to stand in for the 2015 elections.

 

INFRASTRUCTURE

Even if we may not have seen the infrastructure as much as it would be expected, but it will only take ones inability to appreciate progress to say that the administration is lacking behind. First, to be able to do an assessment of progress, it is appropriate that you make a comparative analysis of the past, the present a considerable potentiality of the future. What is the state of any of the major federal roads in Nigeria? Is there work in progress? Are some of them over 80% completed? Are negotiations for award of expansion made on some of them? Has award or concessions been made in some cases? Truth is that as long as you are not static, you are making progress. At least am aware that there is massive improvement on our roads both state and federal. Is that not considered as progress? I will not start mentioning roads here, but if you are interested in having a list, you can have that from the mid term Ministerial report of Mr. President’s achievements. Another truth we have to know is that infrastructural developments are based on appropriations. Meaning that funds (cash or expectations) are appropriated to be used for certain purposes and payments are made and retired as these expected funds are made available. And it’s usually based on projections from the national revenue incomes (e.g sales of crude and tax). So the award of contract does not guarantee 100% instant payment for such projects. It is bound to be spaced through a period of time, which explains why it is a process and not a miracle. And in a country that some people had artificiated terrorism, funds for fighting of this insecurity will definitely eat up original funds appropriated for infrastructural developments thereby slowing the process.

It will only take a great mind to sustainably fight insecurity while infrastructural development is still in the increase. Is that the kind of mind that should be rejected for what and who we don’t know about or their antecedents??

 

 

 ELECTRICITY

I don’t intent to analyze the progress being made in electricity, but I would like to remind us that almost all the previous government had identified POWER as a set back to our economy, my question is, why did they end up without solutions? Is it not because their efforts were surface based? How long did the Obasanjo government try to solve this problem?  Did President Yaradua not try with no considerable result? Why did the Yaradua administration cancel all awards of contract awarded by the Obasanjo government? Why did Bola Ige fail in providing the same solution that subsequently led to his death? Was did Dr. Obiageli Ezekwezili not succeed in causing any change with all her extra abilities? Why did they all fail? Why are you asking for President Jonathan not to be president because you presume he has not solved a problem that no other person could solve? Is there honesty in the wants and expectations of these critiques?

 

 

I am not here to discuss or explain the technicalities being put in place, but I can assure us all that Mr. President has taken the electricity enigma from its roots. And what we have on ground is the best solution that no other administration could ever have thought of. In a couple of years to come, Nigeria will have the much expected uninterrupted power supply. So if the critiques expect a miracle of overnight solution on power, an want to used that to give me reasons to go back on my support for Mr. President, On what or who’s pedigree of success in administering Nigeria successfully will I use to rate who they prefer to President Jonathan? Is it not best for me to follow this steady transformation process of Mr. President?

 

To this end, except I am given a logical and sincere reason that says otherwise,  I believe I am fully convinced that in voting for President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011, I made a right decision, and I will be ready to do so again come 2015.

My fellow nairalanders I got a shocker yesterday 14th of october when I got my october salary alert. Infact it was a wonderful surprise. We got paid september salary on the 20th of september and now october on the 14th,I really commend the federal government under GEJ for this feat. The integrated salary payment system has its snag but I think its the best. I work in one of the tertiary teaching hospitals to be precise. Did any other nairalander receive their salary alert yesterday

It is just so sad,they have been on this for a while and now they want to resort to cheap black mail. Anyone that goes on strike now is tagged to the opposition just same way the resident doctors will soon be accused if their strike continues. Misplaced priority is just the bane of our democracy since its inception.

Haba,I work in a federal government teaching hospital and the miracle since the IPISS issue started was that we got paid september salary on the 20th of september(though normally we get salaries last week of the month). Infacty when I got the aler I had to call some of my colleagues that night. The only snag nw is that they have not paid us the arrrears of the previous months that was deducted as when they started some of us were underpaid

Nigerian universities have been buffeted with agonising months of strikes for over a decade and until now, the story is pretty much the same. Government is still unwilling to give the education sector a shot in the arm.
Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has been on strike since June 30 and has dialogued with FG over 11 times, albeit, inconclusively.
This underscores the lukewarm posture of government towards the striking lecturers and from ASUU’s body language and utterances,  they have made it abundantly clear to anyone who cares to listen that they are ready to continue the strike even if it takes years, insisting that their decision was adequately taken in a bid to revitalise Nigerian universities.
The bone of contention is lucid in itself. An agreement was reached in 2009 that all federal universities would require a total sum of N1.5 trillion spread over three years (2009-2011) to address the rot and decay in the universities.
But, in the Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, signed between the union and the government in 2012, FG decided to extend the gesture to include both federal and state universities. After the 2012 review, it was agreed that instead of N1.5 trillion, FG would infuse a total of N1.3 trillion into the universities over four years.
Almost four years down the line, FG has refused to fulfill its end of the bargain. Rather than respond to the issues raised by the union that would ensure quick resolution to the imbroglio, government boycotted ASUU to summon a meeting with Pro-Chancellors and Vice-Chancellors of universities, offering them N130 billion with a matching order to lecturers to resume work immediately.
But the union is insisting that by throwing money at universities in that manner, government has repudiated the 2009 agreement it entered freely with the union and the 2012 MoU. ASUU is not making any fresh demand but has maintained that the 2009 agreement must be honoured.
It is ridiculous that government officials were quoted as saying ASUU’s N1.3 trillion demand is capable of shutting down the country. No. Their insatiable and rapacious greed will.
The private jets in the presidential fleet can fly, centenary celebrations is a priority to government, there’s enough money to pay humongous salaries and allowances to federal legislators and other political office holders, enough to forfeit to oil subsidy thieves, enough to pay militants bogus amnesty cheques and phantom contracts while they continue to bunker our crude oil like never before, there’s enough money to beg Boko Haram to accept amnesty but there is no money for law abiding Nigerian students who want to eke out a living using university education as a stepping stone. It is this kind of attitude from the government that provokes the use of brute force by some regional groups to attract government’s attention to their problems.
Government cannot claim it has no money to fulfill this agreement. A country with 109 senators earning about N19.6 billion a year, while N51.8 billion is spent on members of House of Representatives for the same period, totaling N71.4 billion.
This sum, N71.4 billion, represents 17.8 per cent of the N400bn yearly intervention fund recommended by the Committee on Needs Assessment of Nigerian Universities. Surely, our lecturers and universities where they were trained deserve more.
When we talk of heath care, government official and the ruling elite go abroad for medical attention; we talk of bad roads, they fly private jets; we talk of power, they run their homes on 24-7 alternative electricity source; now we’re talking Education, their wards are in some of the best universities abroad. There is no way the myriad of problems bedeviling the country can be tackled if the political elite don’t feel the pangs.
That Mr. President has taken out time from his ‘busy’ schedule to constantly parley with the warring factions of his party, PDP, but has never sat down with ASUU members to chart a course for Nigeria’s leaders of tomorrow clearly shows his priorities. Party affairs and chasing perceived enemies of his 2015 ambition around with apparatus of state are far more important things than bending over backwards to pander to the demands of the striking lecturers.
But then, government must take into cognisance the fact that, the longer the students remain at home, chances are that they will be lured into social vices. The aftermath can be disastrous for the state.
There are misplaced calls in some quarters for ASUU to be ‘reasonable’, accept FG’s offer and return to classrooms. Others lambast them for being self-centered and unpatriotic. It is unfortunate that Nigerians are always looking for quick fix solutions to monumental problems. Less endowed countries like Ghana, Botswana and Angola are making giant strides on all fronts because the citizenry have at one point or the other insisted that the needful be done. Here, anything thrown at us is accepted with glee.
We must get our priorities right as a country. Government must curb its own excesses. Education must be given the attention it deserves. Education of the citizenry should not be subjected to any form of Negotiation. Negotiating the education of our leaders of tomorrow is more or less negotiating the future of the country.
Government deliberately wants the strike to linger, first, to blackmail the opposition. There have been several unsavoury comments from the government’s divide of the negotiation table that ASUU has been infiltrated by moles from the opposition, alleging that the strike has lingered to gain political capital. That is how low this government can stoop. We have seen it before. It is an irresponsible and shameless government, one that lacks integrity and honesty that will blame the opposition for all its woes. It is unbecoming for the government of the day to continue to heap its failure on the doorstep of the opposition and ASUU strike is just another avenue to paint the opposition black before the public.
Second, is to send a strong signal to other unions who might be contemplating similar action to have a rethink. Perhaps, government thinks by acceding to ASUU’s demands, other Labour unions might toe the same path at the slightest excuse.
Third, the ultimate aim of government is to paint a bad image of the association to Nigerians, at least, for as long as the strike persists. The Governor Gabriel Suswan-led NEEDS Report Implementation Committee mediating on behalf of the government has unfortunately taken a position that is false, dishonest, and calculated to misinform the public and cause disaffection towards the union.
Rather than seek cheap popularity, Governor Suswan and the rest of the FG team should tow the part of honour by asking
President Goodluck Jonathan to honour the 2009 agreement. There’s no basis for turning the heat on ASUU and the campaign of calumny.
It calls for worry, that same government that has always maintained that ‘our graduates are unemployable’ and our universities churn out ‘half-baked graduates’ find it difficult to commit the much needed funds to revamp the universities.

nited Bank for Africa, UBA, no doubt, one of Africa’s leading financial institutions, is allegedly a home of thieves and fraudsters. The bank that once prided itself as wise men’s bank some years ago, has now become a bank where depositors cannot go to bed with their two eyes closed due to the alarming rate at which fraudulent activities take place in the bank. A lot of its customers are now very scared of being victims of this fraud that is rampant at the bank.
In this report, biznesswatch brings you shocking details of how staffers of  UBA have been defrauding depositors of their deposits. It is alarming to know that this fraud that runs through the bank is not only peculiar to branches of the bank in Nigeria, but also branches of the bank in other African countries.
Only recently, a 41-year-old manager of the bank, Victor Ogunyemi, who allegedly defrauded a bank customer of N3.3million, was charged before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
Ogunyemi, the former manager of the Orile Iganmu branch of UBA, resides at No. 22, Monilola Oyeyinka St., Ajao Estate, Lagos.
The accused is facing a three-count charge of fraud, stealing and issuing a dud cheque.
The prosecutor, Insp Emuerhi Benson told the court that the Ogunyemi fraudulently obtained the money from the complainant, Peter Ojimba.
He said that the offence was committed sometimes in October 2012 at Orile Iganmu, Lagos.
Benson said that the accused, under the representation that the money would be returned within six weeks, obtained the amount; knowing same to be false.
Benson also said that the accused issued a UBA cheque No. 1015584448 to the complainant on Nov. 30, 2012 as settlement for the loan but which this dis-honoured due to insufficient funds.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 278 and 312 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State 2011 and Section 1(2) of the Dis-honoured Cheque Offences Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 1990.
If convicted of fraud, Section 312 provides a maximum of 15 years imprisonment for the offence.
In same vein, two former managers of the bank, Aigbe Akhidnor and Enajite Enaworu were arraigned in Warri, Delta over a fraud of N500 million. As if that was not enough, there came another puzzling fraud of how the sum of N381 million paid into a bank account  that had been dormant for years was cleared within 12 hours.
This fraudulent act took detectives from the force headquarters a long time to unravel the mystery behind these criminal activities of the bank, which eventually led to the arrest of two senior managers, two company chief executives and five other suspects.
Informed police sources reveal that the suspects, sometime in March 2011, at Garki Abuja, conspired to commit felony, criminal misappropriation, criminal breach of trust and cheating. The sources further disclosed that the suspects fraudulently and dishonestly induced one Mustapha Yakubu Ibrahim to deliver the sum of N381 million for the supply of export proceeds value at $2.5million, which they claimed they had in their foreign bank account.
Police investigation reveals that the victim was tricked into paying the money into a United Bank for Africa account as an equivalent of $2.5 million to be paid to him.
As soon as the victim paid the money into the dormant UBA account which has been dormant for years, the bank managers, in connivance with the suspects, immediately cleared the money without paying the said sum of $2.5 million. 
In a criminal charge filed against the suspects and UBA at a Federal High Court in Abuja by the Inspector General of Police, who is the complainant, it is alleged that the suspects defrauded Ibrahim of $2.5 million. As if that was not also enough, there came another in-house fraud that rocked that bank.
Biznesswatch gathered that the mind-boggling sum of about N1.4 billion of customers had earned deposits was missing.
According to sources who would wish to remain anonymous, confirmed that the scam was ‘a long term ploy’. The perpetrators are alleged to have taken advantage of the porous internet banking facilities at the bank to achieve their insidious aim. The bank’s Information & Communication Technology department was fingered in this fraud some arrests made, while investigations are ongoing.
Also, in February 2013, another  employee of UBA, Olumide Fabunmi, was dragged before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly withdrawing N3.4 million from a customer’s account.
Fabunmi, 24, who lives at 55, Okpe Road, Sapele, Delta, is standing trial on a two-count charge of forgery and stealing.
The prosecutor, Insp. Raji Akeem, told the court that the accused committed the offences sometime in April 2012. He said the accused, who was in charge of the account of the complainant, Eyeregba Emmanuel, Managing Director of See-D Good Business Enterprise, Sapele, allegedly forged his signature and withdrew N3.4 million from his account.
Akeem said the accused also presented a forged document with signatures of various customers, including Emmanuel requesting overdrafts from the bank.
“The accused was caught when Emmanuel wrote to the bank through his lawyer that he did not withdraw the money from the bank. After a thorough investigation, it was discovered that Fabunmi, who was the customer’s account officer, forged his signature to withdraw the money,’’ he said.
Akeem, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges. The magistrate, Mrs O.A. Ogunbowale, granted the accused bail in the sum of N250, 000 with two sureties in like sum and the case was adjourned for further hearing. The incessant rate at which these frauds occur has informed the myriads of court cases and litigation against the bank.
The activities of the bank have become synonymous with fraud to the point that fraud now runs in the system of the bank.
Not too long ago in Monrovia, several employees serving in various capacities at the UBA have been arraigned by the Criminal Court “C” at the Temple of Justice for allegedly stealing over US$1m belonging to the bank.
The employees charged with misapplication of entrusted property, criminal conspiracy and facilitation and theft of property pleaded not guilty when the indictment accusing them of the crimes was read to them in the court.
“We are not guilty,” five of the 13 defendants present in court said after the 25-count indictment accusing them of them of theft was read to them.
The plea of not guilty means that the defendants have now entered issue with the state to prove its case against the 13 defendants in the trial which currently going on.
Court record says between September to December 2010 the defendants as a team through employee relationship and in collaboration with co-defendants Ali, Enterprise, Mamawa & Sons, James Adam, Alieu &Sons and only God Blessing did criminally strategized to allegedly steal and misapplied principle and interest generated from loans of UBA in the amount of US$ 1, 257, 722.00.
The defendants have been named as Tunde C. Fon, Rashi R.Chandi, Remeo Clarke jr, James E Potter, Kerlie M. Miller Chikezie Ibem,Boakai Paegar, Patrick K. Manjoe others are Khrussheve Urey, Edward Constance, Johnson Diggs, Gerard Wright and Edwin Yeah including the Ali Enterprise, Mamawa &Sons, James Adam, Alieu &Sons, Augustine Gaye and Only God Blessing businesses.
According to court records, Defendant Tunde Fon working in the capacity of Freeport, Bushrod Island Branch Cash Officer of United Bank of Africa used his office to manipulate the system and incorporated the rest of the defendants working at various other branches of the bank both in Monrovia and that of Ganta, Nimba County.
The court record further that the defendants in view of the facts that all of the positions occupied by them were cash oriented, they begun to loan money out to institutions and individuals such as the Ali Enterprise, Mamawa &Sons, James Adam, Alieu & Sons and Only God Blessing that facilitated the commission of the crimes and thereafter allegedly converted the interests and principles of the money to their personal use.
Again,the indictment against the defendants stated that co-defendant Kerlie Miller allegedly admitted to have being in cohort with co-defendant since 2008 and in some instances, in the event a particular branch is short of cash as a the result of the alleged dubious transactions, money is transferred from another branch to stabilize the account in an effort to conceal the criminal acts.
According to the court record copy of which was obtained by biznesswatch, the acts on the part of the defendants is contrary to $ LCLR title 26 section 10.4 of the statutory laws of the country.
Also, the court record indicated that the person is guilty of theft of property a misdemeanor of the first degree if he or she disposes of, uses or transfer any interest, in property which has been entrusted to him as a fiduciary.
We reliably gathered that the bank’s management is said to have become concerned with the growing rate of fraud being perpetrated in the bank and the fear of the repercussion this would have in balance sheet of the bank.
Informants say the management of the bank is doing everything humanly possible to bring seemingly cankerworm of fraud under control as customers have started closing and relocating their accounts to other safer banks.
