A BRIEF PROFILE OF DR. OGBONNAYA ONU
Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu was born on December 1, 1951, to the family of
His Royal Highness, Late Eze David Aba Onu, Eze Adu of Uburu in
Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State in Nigeria.
He obtained grade one with distinction in his West African School
Certificate examination at Izzi High School, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
Dr Onu also obtained distinctions in Physics and Chemistry at the
Higher School Certificate examination at the College of Immaculate
Conception, CIC, Enugu, graduating as the best overall student. By
1976, he graduated with a first class honours degree in Chemical
Engineering at the University of Lagos. He later obtained his Doctor
of Philosophy degree in Chemical Engineering (without passing
through a Masters degree) at the reputable University of California,
Berkeley, California, USA, in 1980, where he did extensive work on
coal liquefaction and production of synthetic fuels under mild
conditions. He showed that it was possible under relatively mild
conditions to produce synthetic fuels comparable with crude oil.
While in the University of California, Berkeley, Dr. Onu was the
President of the African Students Union; Member, Graduate
Assembly of the University of California at Berkeley and also
President of the Nigerian Association of Northern California, Inc. Back
home, he served as President General of his alma-mater, Izzi High
School, Abakaliki, Old Boys Association.
Coming out of higher school, Dr. Onu taught at St. Augustine’s
Seminary, Ezzamgbo, Ebonyi State. After completing his doctoral
studies in the USA, he returned to Nigeria at the time when many
others in his situation preferred to stay back. On coming back from
overseas, he taught at the University of Port Harcourt as the pioneer
Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering. On several

I noticed since last week that Channel O was off and till now its still off. Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State says Chief Anthony Anenih has a long history of frustrating the will of the people, but will fail with his latest project to secure another term for President Goodluck Jonathan, just as he failed in all the elections in the state since he (Governor) came to power.
Speaking at a rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at Ekpoma in Edo Central Senatorial district, Oshiomhole said the people of Esan land should ask Anenih the role he played in the humiliation, rigging and eventual incarceration of the late Governor of the defunct Bendel State, Professor Ambrose Alli.
According to the Oshiomhole, the time has come for the people Esanland to know who played what role in the development of Esanland.
He urged the people to be wary of the antics and lies of expired godfathers whose stock in trade is to mislead and deceive the people.
Oshiomhole said, “The people must know the truth. Once upon a time, Bendel people from Delta to Edo elected one of your sons, Prof Ambrose Alli of blessed memory. He was elected not only by Esan people but by the entire Bendel State. He established the Ambrose Alli University. You cannot forget the roads he built in Esan land and beyond Esan land. Who removed Ambrose Alli from power? The NPN and their Chieftains in Esanland.”
Oshiomhole continued: “Chief Anenih came here to say it was General Buhari who jailed Ambrose Alli. You voted for Alli but we all know who removed him. They declared somebody else a winner and declared Alli the loser in an election that he won, exactly what they did to me. Anenih must be told part of his sins against Esan people for which he will never be forgiven.
“He can never rewrite history. He cannot run away from his own shadow. The sins he committed against Ambrose Alli will never be forgiven. He must be punished with your votes. I was shocked they have gone to recruit one of Alli’s daughters to join them to campaign.
“The lady needs to think again. You cannot dine with the people who removed the crown from the head of your father. So when they say Buhari was the Head of State when Alli was jailed, do you know what they jailed Alli for? It was that Alli gave a contract to a leader who is a top notcher in PDP today. The man did not do the job. That was what led to the military investigation of Alli.
“Never again should they come to lie to you. I have given you several reasons why PDP must go and APC must come. I urge you to go home and spread the good news. We want General Buhari to come. They say he has no certificate but he became a General”, he said.
The Governor also accused the PDP Federal Government of further impoverishing the poor through its kerosene scam. Speaking at separate rallies at Ikpoba Okha and Oredo Local Government Areas in Edo South Senatorial district, Oshiomhole said, “From Otuoke to Benin City to Lagos to Ekpoma to Iyahmo to Sokoto, kerosene is now N150-N160 per litre. For every N150 you spend in buying kerosene, PDP steals N100 because in the books of NNPC, they have it on records that kerosene is N50 per litre”.
Oshiomhole continued, “When a government cheats the poor people to enrich few people who are buying private jets, will you vote for that kind of party again? When we say President Jonathan should go home, it is not out of hatred. After 16 years, PDP is like an impotent man, it cannot bring development to the nation. They cannot give light, they cannot provide jobs, they cannot repair refineries, they can only produce poverty.”

Governor Adams Oshiomhole said the state Government served authorities of the University of Benin a notice, three years ago, to vacate eighteen properties belonging to the Edo State Government, but rather than vacate, they took the government to court.



The Governor said to fulfil all righteousness, the government waited for the court to deliver judgment, which it did on December 16, last year, ordering the university authorities to vacate the said properties “forthwith” ruling that the 18 properties belonged to the state government.

According to him, having waited from December 16, 2014 for the illegal tenants to vacate the properties and they refused, the government took steps granted by the court to recover the properties in the interest of the people of the state.

Fielding questions from journalists on the issue, Tuesday, Oshiomhole said as the Governor, he has a duty and responsibility to hold in trust and protect all assets belonging to the People of Edo State that are entrusted to the government of the State.

He said, “As the Governor of this state, I have responsibility and duty to protect the interest and asset of Edo State and those properties are not in the names of any individual. They are in the names of Edo State Government and we cannot fold our hands and allow individuals to continue to occupy properties belonging to Edo State Government and paying rents to the wrong authority. I remain firm that if the interest of Edo State is involved, I must stand firm and execute it without fear or favor and that is exactly what we have done.”

Giving a background on how the properties got to the university authorities, he said: “As I am sure you will recall, when UNIBEN was set up, the then Military Governor, Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia, in his wisdom, decided as a young institution to assist some of the officers and staff with accommodation and so, some houses were made available to accommodate some of the staff of UNIBEN.

“However, they have occupied these properties without paying any rent to Edo State Government but a couple of years ago, just before I assumed office as governor, the Federal Government in line with the policy of monetization under which salaries of employees including other allowances were abolished so that rather than provide these for certain categories of public officers, they were to be paid in lieu of either official quarters or cars.

“Subsequently, the Federal Government announced the policy under which they had put on sale all apartments and quarters occupied by public officers having monetized the allowances of such officers and so, in Edo State, Federal Government and some of its agencies had published their intention to sell off the houses that were previously occupied by Public officers.

“As a result of the decision, my predecessor in office, Prof Oserheimen Osunbor, as the governor then, disputed the claim of the Federal Government and the University of Benin that these assets from our records were assets of Edo State Government”.

The Governor said shortly after assuming office, he was approached by counsel of the University of Benin asking him to sign some documents to transfer the landed properties to the university which he declined, saying, “I told him if UNIBEN needs any favour from Edo State Government, I expect the leadership or the VC to approach the government of Edo State for such a favour, not to approach us through their legal adviser.

“I also reminded him that I am aware and it is the truth that salaries of lecturers, academic and non- academic staff have been monetized and even the salary of the VC is now over N1.5 million monthly because the provision for official quarters, car, driver have been monetized and added to their pay. In any event, the official lodge of the Vice Chancellor of Benin is within the premises of the University of Benin at Ugbowo and so he is not entitled to hold several other government properties.  He is not even entitled under the Federal Government policy now to occupy even the official lodge of the VC except he pays rent for it.

“Thereafter I was informed by the Attorney-General that UNIBEN had decided to go to court. Meanwhile, I did not take any further steps. I had directed that a letter be written to the management of the University of Benin advising their officials to vacate those quarters because the University authority was now collecting rent on properties belonging to Edo State Government and this, in my view, was unacceptable and they were advised to vacate. Once we dropped the letter, we didn’t take any further steps.

“On their own, they chose to go to court to challenge our claims that these properties belonged to Edo State Government. Of course we were obliged to enter appearance and we contracted a SAN to represent us in the suit.

“In the end, the court ruled in our favour that these properties belonged to Edo State Government and the fact that you asked a tenant to stay in your quarters doesn’t confer ownership on him and the attempt to sell means that these persons no longer need the assistance. So the court ruled in our favour but the court also proceeded and ruled, based on our own prayers, that having served them notice over 3 years ago, that they should vacate and they failed to vacate, the court ordered that they should vacate the properties forthwith.

“To vacate forthwith means without any further notice because the court took judicial notice of the fact that they have been asked to vacate these properties for over a period of 3 years so they can’t claim that they have not been advised to leave but they stubbornly refused to vacate the properties. This judgment was delivered on the 16th of December, 2014.

“Now I would have thought that if the management of the university had any problem with this to approach us to either give them time or make proposals on how we can manage to accommodate them. However from all we have watched on TV, they were not ready, rather they were still threatening here and there.

“We have also found out that even the former VC, Professor Oshodin is not directly occupying even the property that he is occupying. One of the properties, he allocated to himself, from what we now know, he actually allocated that property to his senior wife while Professor Oshodin lives outside in another property with his younger wife. You cannot give Edo State Government properties to individuals like that.

“There are many of the lecturers, who have retired, who are no longer in the employment of the University of Benin who are still occupying some of these properties. They have lived there for the past 30 years, have retired from UNIBEN several years ago and yet they occupy these properties. Is this in line with public service rule? Are these properties meant to be retirement benefits? He asked.

“So the steps we have taken are purely in the interest of the Edo Public whose taxes were used to procure those assets. I have a duty to secure those assets. I also want to use this opportunity to make the point that I am not like others. I am not selling any of these assets to myself, nor am I allocating any of them to myself or to any of my friends. It is a matter of principle. Everybody is under the law and nobody can resort to blackmail.

“I am aware that they have tried to mobilize all manners of people, people who have no interest whatsoever in the matter. These properties are not student hostels. If the properties are not student hostels, how is the interest of the student community affected? If the wife of Professor Oshodin lives in one of the properties, how does that affect the interest of the student community?

“Clearly, people are being mobilized believing that they can twist the facts and create all kinds of distractions but as far as I am concerned, I am clear, my duties here sometimes can be very pleasant, some other times, it requires a level of courage. The courage to protect the public interest and governance requires that sometimes, you step on toes of people you respect.”

On the issue of the case being in court of appeal, the governor said, “Now if they claim they have a court order to stay, it is not with their mouth, they have to show it to you exactly the same way we have shown you in black and white, the judgment of the court, let them show you the court order that granted them stay. If the court granted stay, we cannot proceed, but also it is an elementary principle in law that the fact that you verbalize your intentions to appeal doesn’t mean you have filed an appeal.”

This is the height of mischief. As early as 7am this morning the main gate of uniben has been blocked by ASUU uniben toyota sienna while the back gate that leads to ubth has also been blocked. Thee is a white toyota hiace bus that belongs to edo state city transport service there that has been vandalised. Cars are not allowed to leave the compound. A lot of us are stuck in the school premises against our wish. Does this make sense?

its very sad and disheartening that this is happening in my alma mater. After my own investigation into this issue, I would like to say its a shame to the uniben academic body for using the students as an alibi to perpetrate violence.
Yes, I agree that demolishing the staff buildings at GRA was a wrong move by the govt as an appeal has been granted in court. But resorting to violence by burning comrade bus is totally uncalled for.
And what pains me most is the idiotic uniben sug who have become tools in the hands of the school management.

For four years I was in school, there were many instances of where injustice, maltreatment, unfairness was. meted out to students, yet these fools never protested against management, yet they went to hire touts and claimed they were. students to perpetrate their evil act. they have forgotten that their primary objective is to fight for the student and not school minagement. anybody who hears this news will think Unben student are truly responsible for the violence.

The governor had a media chat this afternoon and what you guys will read in the papers tomorrow will wow a lot of people. I am still in shock cos it seems uniben authorities have made a wrong move in the game of chess that just started. Am sad that some security men at a particular bank in uniben campus were fired for allowing the students into the banking hall yesterday when the students leds by the SuG president went on rampage going into the nine banks in the school compound after closing hours(4pm). Now am wondering if Oshiomole own the banks( the students alleged that they wanted to remove the pictures of oshiomole in the banking halls.
Now the security men were sacked and the students got wind of it and came back to vandalise the bank. I just hope tomorrow won't be a continuation of this crisis

Man holy rosary is very motorable. Whenever there is hold up at uselu shell I drive through universal through technical college road via holy rosary to connect federal government college road. I relocated back to b enin 2 years ago and was surprised at the state of the road cos when I left 7 yrs before the road was terrible and all muddy. Infact it was an eye sore. Adolor college is a lil bit motorable in the rainy season compared to what it was years back. I stayed at eweka avenue off iyeye street then and gosh it was so terrible that the then inec chairman Abel Guobadia who was my neighbour then relocated to GRA. This dry season its very motorable. What I think that babe you have been arguing with is trying to point out is that compared to the pdpd years the road is a bit better as the potholes have been filled up with sand like was done on some spots along wire road. Uwasota from ojo junction to uwelu is a write off I won't dare drive on that road. Thetre is so much work to be done on the roads in benin. If the interlinking roads(which benin has a lot of ) are fixed nobody will bother passing through the major roads

Very funny post. Who suffers for this? Oshiomole doesn't ride those buses but the masses do? Uniben is supposed to resume fully on monday(officially). The 100 level students are doing their clearance now, so who is responsible for this act? The governor messed up big time byy not obeying the court order knowing that he came to power through a court's mandate. He should learn to obey as no one is above the law. Three questions come to mind.
1. Who did this as students are not fully in session?
2. There is a police station at main gate where were the policemen when this happened?

There was tension in the GRA, Benin City Monday following the demolition of the residence of the immediate past Vice Chancellor of University of Benin along with his personal belongings.
Although the state government is yet to make a public comment on the development, occupants of the property accused the state government of being the brains behind the demolition in spite of the fact that a case on the property is before an appellate court.

The story is very true. I drove past the scene and had to stop over because of the commotion. I met the lady's sister been beaten by the mob, the police came and intervened. They took the woman's sister was taken away with a piece of the man's penis in a polythene bag. The man had been rushed to the hospital by then and the culprit I was told drove away in her jeep. The story is that the man hit her car and issues escalated, some slaps were releaswed and at the end of the day both women started fighting with the man and his penis got yanked off(part of the penis). This incident happened at isihor between Fmorris filling station and ine filling station

Why so much misinformation on nairaland?what has Oshiomole got to do with fuel distribution? FYI it was on the news by the depot manager in benin that the depot that supplies Benin and environs had shortage of fuel and that is why there was a bit of scarcity for about a week plus. Even in the height of it all there were long queues in filling stations. Worse was Osunpec( opposite S and T barracks isihor) and Ziuss filling station in Isihor, Anayo, Buvel and petom at Oluku had fuel this period and even as at that fue was sold in worse case scenarios at 100 naira per litre. Since thursday last week there has been fuel in filling stations in ugbowo,isihor, oluku up to ekiadolor and okada, I know this for a fact

Best Of Nollywood (BON)’s Head of Jury, Niran Adedokun, has reacted to the viral reports that Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, ‘insulted’ Nollywood practitioners and described them as ‘products of circumstances because they had failed in other fields.’
According to Adedokun, Amaechi was only trying to explain the current situation of the country viz massive job unemployment.

“Amaechi never said that. What he said was that a lot of people are into acting because of the situation of things in the country. He said many of them probably studied other courses and didn’t get jobs in those fields. He wasn’t talking about the movie industry alone; he actually mentioned the case of people who read Engineering but work in banks…that was exactly what he was talking about; that because there are no jobs in the country, a lot of people are working in fields they didn’t study for.” he said

Also, the organizers have sent in a statement which reads thus:

At no point did Governor Amaechi insult Nollywood practitioners. Instead, he commended them for growing the industry into a multi billion naira industry without any form of institutional or government support.

Nollywood, he says, now employs hundreds of thousands of Nigerian youths who, despite their qualifications, may have remained jobless because of the unemployment challenge in Nigeria which has led to a situation whereby graduates of medicine, law and other such disciplines end up in Nollywood.

At that point, popular entertainer, Okey Bakassi, interrupted the governor, saying he is an agricultural engineering graduate of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, which threw the whole hall into laughter.

The Governor then recalled that at the 40th birthday party of Kate Henshaw a while back, Basorge Tariah Jnr reminded her how they used to slap the streets in search of jobs and that it was Nollywood that rescued them.

Governor Amaechi also cited the example of the banking industry which has become a dumping ground of sort for graduates of different disciplines that are not even remotely related to the banking profession.

It does not beggar rational understanding, except that the blogger may not be so conditioned, therefore, that this allusion is a thumbs up for the pioneers of Nollywood, not an insult as she inanely interpreted it.

More so, at no point did the Governor say he gives Kate Henshaw money. He did, however, say that the state has contracted Mrs Joke Jacobs to turn Chinua Achebe’s political satire, A Man of the People, into a movie because of its inherent, timeless social message.

After his speech, an excited Patience Ozokwor re-invited the Governor to the stage to co-present the Movie of The Year award.

We wonder if the practitioners did indeed feel insulted, the Governor would still receive a standing ovation for stating that after his term in office expires, he would devote the next couple of years to reading and research and that one of the research topics he has chosen is the dynamism and evolution of Nollywood.

It is noteworthy to mention that despite starting behind schedule, Governor Amaechi sat through the awards which lasted over three hours.

We therefore want discerning Nigerians to discountenance this ill-intentioned report as it is not only the product of warped reasoning and deliberate misinterpretation, it is most uncharitable to Governor Amaechi and demeaning to the Nollywood stars and stakeholders that were at the event.
