Just because the US and UN would not support the north doesn't mean they wouldn't seek to control Delta and Rivers themselves. And if Biafra doesn't get Rivers at least, it doesn't really sound like a very interesting nation to live in. Landlocked, overpopulated, not enough farmland, no oil wealth. Not the brightest future, imo |
Math is off by a lot. Crude oil is @ roughly $82/barrel (http://www.oil-price.net/) octave:38> 82* (60*1e6)/1e9 ans = 4.9200 So 4.92 billion, not 70 billion. Of that, lets say the gov't sees 20%. Roughly 1 billion a month. Hard to say what the true population of Nigeria really is, but I imagine it has to be north of 120 million, at least. That is $8.20 per month, per person. So like 27 cents per day. EDIT: Lemme know if I made any mistakes in the above, it was a pretty quick calc. |
I really like GEJ personally. I hate the PDP, but like the man. It is a very weird feeling. . . |
;d |
excoba101:I agree. But point #2 should tell you that ethnicity alone is probably not going to determine borders. |
fstranger:Hrm. I've tried that, but somehow didn't find it as captivating. I can understand spoken Yoruba, but I think only a subset of what they say in movies, so I get lost very fast ![]() I think the Bible might work out better, since I already know (most) of the content. And I can quickly pause and go over phrases/expressions that I don't know just by comparing with text. Also, if I'm sitting watching something on youtube that I don't really understand, then it feels like homework or something. If I'm just listening while working out, then it doesn't feel like homework as much. |
bk.babe97y:Heh. This is why whenever I envision Yorubaland, I specifically don't try to include any parts of Delta. I'm not interested in biting off any more than I can chew. Even if all of Delta was Yoruba, only a fool wouldn't realize how much more difficult that would make an independence movement. You do not want to threaten the livelihood of the oil companies and the Western world; do that and you'll be invaded by US Marines. By and large, a hypothetical Yorubaland doesn't really pose a threat. But if I wanted to declare Yorubaland, carry Delta, carry parts of existing countries like Benin, Togo? That is seeking destruction for not only your movement, but for your people. |
^-- I've decided to download the audio version of the Bible in Yoruba (http://www.yorubabible.com/). Kill two birds with one stone, strengthen my belief and my language ![]() I'll put this in my iPod and listen to it when at the gym tomorrow. |
Igbobuigbo: Let me give you another example. In Iran today, there is this province called Khuzestan. It historically has been an Arab province, not Persian (i.e., the ethnicity there is Arab, not Persian.) This territory is one of the most productive territories oil-wise in all of Iran. The US as you know doesn't like Iran, and has sponsored in the past a bunch of "Khuzestan liberation fighter" types, dudes who either want Khuzestan to declare independence, or for it to leave and join Iraq. Yet, there is no chance of this ever happening, while Khuzestan has oil. The territory is just too valuable to the Iranian state. If it were some territory w/o oil and filled with independence-seeking Arabs, they might be more willing to let them go. But since the land has oil, there is no chance of them leaving, regardless of their desires. (This isn't a completely accurate description of what is happening in Khuzestan and Iran, it is quite a bit more nuanced than this short summary. Research and find out more if you want to learn further.) Anyway, you sort of see the issue here? Me pointing out obvious facts about how different territories are valued doesn't make me some sort of Igbo-hater, as you guys seem to think I am. These are just the realities on the ground. If somebody wants to declare Biafra and carry Rivers and Delta with them, even if Rivers and Delta sef want to go, there will be wahala. It is bad enough to lop off land from a country, even worse to take their most valuable possessions. Like I said earlier, in a perfect world, everyone would have the right to self-determination and free association. But this is a very imperfect world. People will hold you against your will in a country with force, if necessary. No amount of shouting down people on the internet is going to change that, really. And it isn't even just the Nigerian state those who want to carry Rivers and Delta would have to face. Don't you realize that the US and international world wants to maintain the status quo as much as possible? These foreign countries are not going to be friends of a Biafra that includes Rivers and/or Delta. So you have to think very well rather than just castigating, imo. |
My ability to read Yoruba is terrible ![]() I need to fix this situation someday soon |
Also one of the losingest coaches in the NBA ![]() And 2010-2011 season has started, 2009/2010 is over ![]() |
igbobuigbo:

Dunno his name specifically, but I know he is Igbo from Rivers.
They are still Yoruba, yes. But that doesn't necessarily mean they will be in a hypothetical state that included the SW; heck, I don't expect to incorporate territory in Sierra Leone, Benin Republic and Togo either. Yet all three of those states have varying amounts of Yoruba-speaking peoples in them.
Look, personally I want Kwara and Western Kogi to join. But it isn't something I can do unilaterally, is it? First of all, the people themselves have a significant say. If I want them to join but they don't want to, I cannot force them. Second, unfortunately, the region they are currently considered a part of also has a say. Realistically, Kwara has some of the best farmland in all of Nigeria. So it isn't a territory I'd want to give up as a Northerner with at least negotiating (or possibly fighting) for. Sorta see what I'm saying here? There are least three parties of interest here; I cannot completely ignore the interests of the two other stakeholders (namely, the citizens of those states and the region they are currently considered a part of) and act unilaterally. |
my bad. . . |
Congrats to him. |
Why no Ife I'm partial to that university ![]() |
Crazy ish. |
btw, shouldn't a new thread be made for the new season, lol |
Beaf:The word is too ambiguous, though. People should be more explicit and use "racism"/"bigotry" when necessary. "Tribalism" is also used to attack people who simply seek good for their people. That imo is wrong. |
jason12345:Are these guys insane? Seriously, wtf is this? |
Nah, Nelly did pretty well in 06-07 with BDiddy, remember? Remember the upset over Mavs? Nelly is a coaching genius, but also very lazy. Hard to keep him motivated. |
lol @ Pafuri. First Yoruba Awolowo hater I've seen or heard of before in my life. Ah well, its all good, people have different perspectives on things. |
Marion, Amare, D'Antoni should all give half of their paychecks to Nash, lol. He made them all. |
Amare looks like a bust. Wonder how long until D'Antoni is fired. |
angrynaija:Culture changes. I'm not into earrings or tattoos, but I know lots of nigerian dudes who are. It is what it is, the only cultures that stay the same are dead ones. |
Agreed. No more tribe, use ethnicity, ethnic group or the equivalents instead. |
This story is very confusing in a lot of ways. . . |
